Sunday's Diamond Notes
By Joe Williams
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Rays (4-0 past four games, 8-3 past 11 overall)

The Dodgers aren't the only team playing well right now. The Rays have ripped off four straight victories, including each of their first two games against the Angels in Anaheim, winning by a combined score of 8-3. Pitching has been the key for Tampa Bay's turnaround, as they have allowed just seven total runs during their four-game winning streak. The Rays have also ripped off five victories over their past six against American League West foes while winning five of their past seven against right-handed starters. They turn to Chris Archer for the sweep, and they have been hot with the Raleigh-born pitcher on the hill. Tampa Bay is 5-1 over Archer's past six outings, including 4-1 over his past five road assignments.

Coldest team: Royals (0-5 past five games overall)

The Royals have climbed back into contention in the wide-open American League Central Division, but if they want to keep their postseason aspirations alive they will need to snap their losing skid. They're one game under .500 as a result of their slide, but they're still just three games back of the first-place Indians, a team experiencing some issues of their own. Danny Duffy pitched into the ninth inning and was on the short end of a 1-0 loss to the Rangers. Pitching hasn't been the problem during their losing streak, but a power outage on offense has been the issue. The Royals are averaging just 2.0 runs per game during their 0-5 run.

Hottest pitcher: Carlos Martinez, Cardinals (6-8, 3.40 ERA)

Martinez is two games under .500, so how can he be the 'hottest pitcher' on the board? Well, of all the starters in the majors on Sunday, C-Mart has the lowest ERA at 3.40. The All-Star also has a stellar .213 opponent batting average and microscopic 1.16 WHIP over 116 1/3 innings across 18 starts. Unfortunately for Martinez, he ranks 16th in the majors with the lowest run support at 3.94 runs per game. The Cardinals are 26-11 over Martinez's past 37 starts against teams with a losing record, and 10-3 in his past 13 assignments on the road against teams with an overall losing mark.

Coldest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (7-8, 5.47 ERA)

Tanaka will take the ball in Game 2 of Sunday's day-night doubleheader, and he will at least have the luxury of facing some bats slower than normal. That's because the rivals just played into the 16th inning on Saturday, and they'll have another full game under their belts by the time Tanaka toes the slab Sunday night at Fenway Park. Tanaka had things going in the right direction with three consecutive quality starts from June 23-July 3, but he was smacked around for five earnedruns, six hits and two homers in just 4 1/3 innings in a loss against the Brewers on July 9 before the break. The good news is Tanaka will be working under the lights, and there is a reason he isn't working Game 1 during the daytime. He is 0-5 with a 14.81 ERA over six daytime starts and 7-3 with a 3.10 ERA across 12 outings at night.

Biggest UNDER run: Cardinals (0-4 past four overall)

The 'under' has been a frequent occurrence for the Redbirds lately, going 0-4 over the past four outings and 4-1 intheir past five vs. RHP. In addition, the under is an impressive 11-3-3 in Martinez's past 17 outing against divisional foes. That includes a 4-0 under mark in his past four showings against the Pirates. The under has cashed in nine of the past 12 meetings in this series, including the first two in this series where an average of just 5.5 combined runs per game have been scored. The under is also 9-1-1 over Pittsburgh's past 11 outings.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (5-1-1 past seven overall)

Toronto's pitching has struggled mightily in recent games, allowing double-digit run totals in three of the past five outings. That including an 11-run outburst by the Tigers at Comerica Park on Saturday. The Blue Jays are yielding 7.8 runs per game over the past 10 outings. For what it's worth, the 'over' has also cashed in four straight games for Toronto on a Sunday while going 5-1-1 in the past seven during a Game 3 of a series. The under is 11-1 in Marco Estrada's past 12 tries against American League Central foes, however, while the under is 21-9 in the team's past 30 against the Central overall.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Yankees

The Yankees are Red Sox went 16 innings in Saturday's game, now they turn around and will have a 1:05pm ET start with Bryan Mitchell facing Rick Porcello. In the nightcap, Masahiro Tanaka and David Price will lock horns.

Betcha didn’t know: As always, remember that only a quarter of all doubleheaders end up in a sweep. Looking back at this season's doubleheaders, the past two have been split, each taking place on July 1. In the previous 14 doubleheaders this season, 10 have resulted in splits, three have been a sweep and one saw Game 1 rained out. Two of the teams doing the sweeping were road teams. The Red Sox haven't been involved in a doubleheader this season, but the Yankees split a twin bill with the Astros at The Stadium back on May 14. The Red Sox had one doubleheader last season, splitting a pair in Kansas City on May 18. In 2015, the Yankees were on the short end of two doubleheader sweeps, each against divisional foes. The last time Boston swept a doubleheader was June 18, 2013 against the Rays. The last time the Yankees swept a DH was Aug. 20, 2013 at home against the Blue Jays.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-190) vs. Twins

Biggest public underdog: White Sox (+115) vs.Mariners

Biggest line move: Athletics (+110 to -105) vs. Indians

Yankees, Red Sox meet in Boston
By: StatFox.com

The Yankees will be hoping to pick up a much-needed victory when they take on the Red Sox on Sunday.

The Yankees are currently chasing the Red Sox in the AL East, and these games are all extremely important moving forward. This was already one of the most heated rivalries in all of sports, but the fact that these teams are both relevant makes it a whole lot better. Every win for either of these teams will seriously impact the standings, so there will be plenty of intensity in this Sunday night matchup. The starters in this game are set to be RHP Masahiro Tanaka (7-8, 5.47 ERA, 103 K) for New York and LHP David Price (4-2, 3.91 ERA, 50 K) for Boston. Both guys have been aces in the past, but they are far from the pitchers they once were. Tanaka has really struggled this season, and it’s actually been a serious grind for him all year. Price, meanwhile, started slow, but he has gotten himself going a bit as of late. Heading into the break, the lefty was in a serious groove. There are, however, some injuries worth pointing out for New York. One of those is that 1B Greg Bird (Foot) is still not back with the team. That forced New York to acquire 1B Garrett Cooper from the Brewers over the break. OF Aaron Hicks (Oblique), meanwhile, is also out for the time being for New York.

In his last start before the All-Star break, Masahiro Tanaka allowed five earned runs in only 4.1 innings of work in a home start against the Brewers. The righty allowed two homers in that game, and he has allowed none in his previous three starts. All of those outings were excellent, and Tanaka’s inconsistency was a huge problem in the first half of the year. Heading into this season, Tanaka was as reliable as they come for New York. The team will be hoping that he can find a way to correct his mechanical issues for the second half of the year. Offensively, keep an eye on both OF Jacoby Ellsbury and SS Didi Gregorius in this game. Ellsbury is 27-for-77 with six doubles, two triples, one homer, and seven RBI against Price in his career. He has had no trouble getting to the lefty. Gregorius, meanwhile, is 12-for-24 with a homer and five RBI against Price. He was also hot heading into the break.

The Red Sox have got to be pleased with the way David Price was pitching heading into the All-Star break, and Price will definitely be hoping that he can keep it up starting Sunday. The lefty had allowed three or fewer earned runs in six straight starts before the break, and he even struck out 21 batters over his three most recent outings. His stuff isn’t quite the same as it once was, but he still knows how to get the job done. On offense, OF Hanley Ramirez could do some damage here. Hanley has homered twice off of Tanaka in his career, and a long-ball could be exactly what he needs in order to get himself going. He had a rough first half of the season, but all will be forgotten if he helps the Sox win the division.
