Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Philip Humber, Chicago White Sox 1-0, 0.63 ERA

The 29-year-old right-hander just tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history. Opponents are batting .122 against Humber, who has fanned 16 and walked three batters this season. Humber left his team’s West Coast trip early to return to Chicago to be with his wife as she gives birth. He gets the Red Sox at home Thursday.

Jonathon Niese, New York Mets 2-0, 2.89 ERA

The 25-year-old lefty has gone at least six innings in each of his three starts. He has a WHIP of 1.13, and the league is hitting .200 against him. Niese, who faces Miami at home Thursday, has limited current Marlins batters to a .208 average (16 for 77) in his career.

SLUMPING

Luis Mendoza, Kansas City Royals 0-2, 6.92 ERA

The league is batting .414 against Mendoza, who has an ugly strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3:9. He gets the Indians on Thursday. When he faced them April 15, he was lit up for nine hits, four walks and nine runs (five earned) over four innings. The 28-year-old right-hander likely will get booted from the rotation as soon as Felipe Paulino returns.

Brian Matusz, Baltimore Orioles 0-3, 7.98 ERA

If Matusz doesn’t pitch well against the Blue Jays on Thursday, he could get sent down. The 25-year-old lefty has won one of his last 13 decisions. When he faced Toronto on April 15, Matusz gave up two homers and five earned runs in five innings. Opponents are batting .349 against him.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Washington Nationals at San Diego Padres

Washington off to a great start at 14-4 (+$928) including 6-2 (+$382) away from Nationals Park could hit a rough patch when they close the three-game set in San Diego. As good as Nats starters have been (2.20 ERA) today's hurler Edwin Jackson (1-1, 4.26 ERA) rates at the bottom of the staff and heads to the bump 0-3 vs Padres in his five life-time starts chucking for D-Backs/Rays/Dodgers (1-4 TSR). Then again, Padres are countering with Edison Volquez (0-2, 4.30 ERA) who is winless as a Padre in four attempts and owns a dreadful 1-12 team start record last thirteen on the hill with Padres/Reds.

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore (11-7, +$645) taking the first two of this set against Toronto (10-8, +$14) at Camden Yards are now 4-1 against the Blue Jays this season after going 6-12 against them in 2011. Orioles currently tied atop the A.L. East with Tampa look to build on their early-season success with a series sweep over rival Blue Jays behind left-hander Brian Matusz. Good luck with that, Matusz is off to an 0-3 start with 7.98 ERA but more importantly the hurler has yet to make it into the sixth inning surrendering 22 hits, 2 jacks, 11 walks in 14 2/3 innings of work. If that were not enough to consider fading Orioles, Matusz is on an 0-12 slide his last thirteen on the mound (0-13 TSR) and enters with a 1-3 TSR vs Toronto including a 9-2 loss earlier this season. Stick with the visitor, Jays are on a 7-3 streak swinging at a left-handed starter, 10-5 stretch following back-2-back losses and a smart a 4-1 stretch after being shutout the previous night.

MLB: Perfect Games - No-Hitters
Sportspic.com

Phil Humber threw baseball's 21st perfect game Saturday April 21st 2012 and first since Philadelphia's Roy Halladay threw one against the Florida Marlins on May 29, 2010.

Unbelievable mastery on the mound to say the least, but do we back these hurlers after making history. A quick cruise through our trusted database tells us it's a toss up as the last five hurlers recording a perfect game had a 2-3 TSR the following trip to the mound while the last thirteen pitchers recording no-hitters have a 7-6 TSR the next start.

One interesting note: When one of these amazing hurlers faces a division foe the next game the TSR W/L tumbles to to 4-7. Little wonder, division foes face each other many times each season therefore are well aware of strengths, weaknesses of each player and team.
