Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (5-1, 2.35 ERA)

The big lefty fanned a season-high 12 batters in his last outing, allowing just a single run in a 7-2 win over Oakland. In his last three starts, he has allowed three earned runs, walked just three, and has a complete game under his belt. He’s 5-2 in 14 starts against the Yanks.

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees (4-0, 4.15 ERA)

Sabathia shares the mound with Price Wednesday and is also riding a hot streak. He has thrown eight innings in each of his last three outings and has struck out 21 batters over that span. You’d like to see the ERA a little lower right now, but it’s hard to argue with 43 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings.

Slumping

Kevin Correia, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-2, 3.38 ERA)

The Reds touched Correia for five runs and nine hits in a 6-1 win the last time he toed the rubber. The 31-year-old also served up back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning and has just 12 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings so far this year. The Pirates are averaging 2.8 runs in his starts.

Jason Marquis, Minnesota Twins (2-1, 5.40 ERA)

With only six games on tap Thursday, we struggled to find slumping starters. Even though Marquis walked six batters during a 7-0 loss to Seattle last week, he only gave up two earned runs on four hits over six innings. Still, the veteran seems to be holding on by a thread right now. He has only eight strikeouts this season and has a 1.54 WHIP.

Detroit at Oakland Series Preview / Picks
Sportspic.com

The Detroit Tigers were supposed to have one of the more imposing batting orders in Major League Baseball. Instead, their offense has underperformed in the early part of the season.

Game 1: Thursday, May 10

If you are interested in Betting on baseball this season, the upcoming four-game weekend series between Detroit and Oakland offers a tension point: The Detroit Tigers were supposed to be the best team in the American League Central Division, but so far, they have fallen behind the Cleveland Indians because of an inability to score runs… this, despite the addition of huge-hitting first baseman Prince Fielder. The Tigers are hoping to rejuvenate themselves as they play the downmarket Oakland Athletics.

In game one, the Tigers have an edge. Detroit starting pitcher Max Scherzer has not been particularly good this season, sporting a grubby 6.32 earned-run average as he takes the hill for manager Jim Leyland. However, Scherzer pitched under postseason pressure last year and did well against the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium. He knows how to perform when the bright lights come on. Oakland starter Tyson Ross is a different story altogether. With a lousy 8.55 ERA, Ross hasn't shown any real ability to get out Major League hitters on a consistent basis. It's quite true that Detroit's hitters have struggled up and down the line this season, but against Ross, they just might get healthy, at least for one night. This is quite clearly the Tigers' game to lose. Detroit should be able to find a way to score runs against Ross, with Scherzer being solid enough to consolidate the Tigers' advantage.

Pick: Detroit

Game 2: Friday, May 11

The when you do your homework and assess your Bet on sports on this second game of the four-game series, you have to think that Oakland – if it wins this weekend – is most likely to pull through in this situation. Detroit starter Rick Porcello carries a very mediocre 4.91 earned-run average into this game, the product of an inability to string together three good starts in a row. There has been an up-and-down quality to Porcello's body of work this season, so Detroit doesn't know what it will get in this contest. Oakland starter Bartolo Colon has been much more consistent than Porcello. With a 2.83 ERA, Colon has given ballast to the A's pitching rotation, and he figures to be able to outduel Porcello on Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

Pick: Oakland

Game 3: Saturday, May 12

Game three of this series feels like a Tiger triumph. Detroit starter Doug Fister hasn't allowed a run in 10 2/3 innings this season. He got injured in his first start of the year on April 7 against Boston. He returned to action this past Monday night against Seattle and threw seven shutout innings against the Mariners. Fister is a very effective pitcher who clearly showed few ill effects after a month away from the big leagues. He should be able to hold down Oakland's bats in this game. The A's will counter with Tommy Milone, who sports a 4.42 earned-run average. That's okay and tolerable, but it's not exactly top-tier quality, either. Detroit should be able to get its nose in front and hold on for a win as long as its bullpen doesn't crumble in this MLB Best online sportsbook game.

Pick:Detroit

Game 4: Sunday, May 13

The final game of the weekend will show the baseball community if a young and rising prospect can keep up with an elite starting pitcher who is performing at the top of his game. Justin Verlander, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, carries a 2.38 ERA into this game, while Oakland counters with Brandon McCarthy, who has overachieved with a 2.96 earned-run average. McCarthy figures to be really good, and his future is very bright, but Verlander is the best starting pitcher in the American League. Detroit will win this game and take three out of four over the weekend on the road.

Pick: Detroit

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Washington at Pittsburgh

You will find it hard to go against the Nationals when they play the third of this three game set against Pirates at PNC Park Thursday night. The Nationals despite it's current mini three game slump still lead National League East by percentage points with an 18-12 (+$450) mark. Nationals are for real, going back to mid-September last year Washington has posted a smart 32-19 mark stuffing +$1832 into betting accounts. Nationals closing this set hooking Strasburg (2-0, 1.66 ERA, 5-1 TSR) against Correia (1-2, 3.38 ERA, 2-3 TSR) has all the markings of a pitching mismatch. Strasburg 1-0 with a miniscule 0.90 ERA on the road this season giving up two runs over 20.0 innings of work should have little trouble out duelling Correia who is 0-1 spanked for 3 jacks, 7 runs in 13.0 innings at home this season. PNC has not been kind to Correia since his arrival in 2011, the Pirates are just 4-10 in the hurlers fourteen starts at the ball park. Stick with visiting Nationals as they're on 10-3 stretch handing the ball to Strasburg off a team loss the previous day, Nats are on a 7-2 road stretch with Strasburg touching toe to rubber.
