Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (5-1, 3.65 ERA)

Dickey didn’t have his best knuckler going in his last start, but still held the Marlins to two runs over six innings to pick up his third win in four outings. He was hit by a pitch on the wrist of his pitching hand, which cut his outing short. He is expected to be fine for Thursday. Dickey said he had a tough time keeping his knuckleball from over-rotating.

Brandon Beachy, Atlanta Braves (4-1, 1.60 ERA)

You’d never know Brandon Beachy was an undrafted free agent by looking at him on the mound now. He allowed just one run on two hits over six innings in a win over St. Louis in his last outing, and has allowed two or fewer runs in all seven of his starts. However, he has walked seven combined batters in his last two outings – half of his season total.

Slumping

Chris Volstad, Chicago Cubs (0-5, 6.92 ERA)

One bad inning spoiled another Volstad outing last week when he coughed up five runs in the sixth inning against the Brewers, adding yet another loss to his resume. Volstad’s slider has given him the most trouble, but without a win since July 17 of last year, the slump seems to be getting to his head. He might be pitching to save his spot in the rotation here and will be up against Roy Halladay.

J.A. Happ, Houston Astros (2-3, 5.72 ERA)

Happ has surrendered six home runs in his last four starts and owns a fat 7.16 ERA over his last three starts. Manager Brad Mills says Happ’s major problem right now is that he’s leaving some pitches up in the strike zone. He has just one win in his last six starts.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Baltimore Orioles at Kansas City Royals

The Baltimore Orioles will be a little anxious when they close this mini set in Kansas City handing the ball to Brian Matusz (2-4, 5.50 ERA). Although his recent outing was one of his best this season the left-hander has but three personal wins his last seventeen on the mound and carries to the bump a horrendous 3-14 team start record over the span. If that were not enough to worry Orioles consider that despite the win last night Orioles remain a dreary 3-7 L10 in Kansas City and that Matusz was chased in the forth last time he appeared at Kauffman Stadium having faced just sixteen batters giving up 5 runs. Look for Birds to fall to 1-9 on the road with their lefty and drop to 2-7 in May starts with the southpaw.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays

The Boston Red Sox seem to have finally figured things out. Although still holding down basement dwelling status in the A.L. East the Bean-Town-Boys have won five of their last six games and look to even their mini two game series at Tropicana Field. The pitching matchup features Boston left-hander Felix Doubront (3-1, 4.46 ERA) against Rays lefty Matt Moore (1-3, 5.31 ERA). Doubront is coming off a good outing having allowed 3 hit, 1 run in 6.0 innings to beat Cleveland posting a second straight victory and third in four attempts. Meanwhile, Rays southpaw is off his shortest start of the season giving up 4 runs over 4.1 innings of work in a loss at Baltimore marking a second consecutive defeat for the hurler. Moore has now surrendered 12 runs the past two starts which spans over 9 innings. Struggling Moore won't silence Boston's bats. Red Sox improve to 4-0 on the road with Doubront and notch their second win vs Rays with the lefty touching toe to rubber.
