Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Jake Westbrook, St. Louis Cardinals (3-1, 1.30 ERA)

Westbrook has thrown at least 6 2/3 innings in each of his four starts and has his sinker in top form. The 6-foot-3 righty has just 15 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings of work, but is pounding the bottom half of the strike zone. ''He's on a roll,'' Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said of Westbrook after he paced St. Louis to a 13-1 victory in his last outing. ''He's throwing the ball down in the zone real well. He gets ground balls when he needs to.''

Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks (3-0, 3.38 ERA)

Kennedy has struck out at least five batters in his last four starts and has worked at least six innings in each of his five starts this season. However, he isn’t happy with his stuff at all. After picking up a no-decision in a loss to Miami he said it “was a battle trying to throw strikes. I don't know. I wasn't very efficient pitches-wise.” He has walked eight batters in 32 innings this year.

Slumping

Randall Delgado, Atlanta Braves (2-2, 6.30 ERA)

The 22-year-old showed glimpses of promise in winning his first two starts of the year, but has struggled since. Randall has allowed nine earned runs in 9 2/3 innings over his latest two outings and walked seven batters during that span. He averaged 22.6 pitches per inning in last week’s loss to Pittsburgh.

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (2-3, 6.23 ERA)

Danks is coming off a terrible effort against the BoSox, allowing seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, walking four and giving up a homer. Control is the major issue as he’s walked 15 in 30.1 innings pitched this year. The White Sox have his record, averaging 4.8 runs in his starts.

Marlins at Giants

When Miami completes the three-game series with Giants in San Francisco Thursday afternoon hooking Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 2.73 ERA) against Ryan Vogelsong (0-1, 4.19 ERA) the Marlins will have conditions on their side. Sanchez in solid form setting a personal high with 14 strikeouts in his last start is 2-0 with a miniscue 0.75 ERA in three life-time starts vs Giants. If that were not enough reason to back Marlins, consider that Sanchez blanking Giants over 18 innings in his two starts in San Francisco heads to the mound with a sparkling 9-1 team start record in May.

Blue Jays at Angels

The Blue Jays (14-11, +39) thumping Texas 11-5 in Toronto Wednesday afternoon handing Rangers consecutive losses for the first time this season take the show on the road for a grueling 10-game swing starting in Anaheim. The Jays will be looking for Brandon Morrow (2-1, 3.03 ERA, 3-2 TSR) to build off his two most recent starts. The righty has been impressive last two allowing just a single run over 6.2 in a win against Royals and most recently blanking Seattle over six posting his second victory of the season. Meanwhile, Halos behind Jered Weaver's no-hitter last night swept Minnesota outscoring Twinkies 17-3 over the three-game set. Halos (10-15, -$1106) open the set with Dan Haren (1-1, 3.34 ERA, 1-4 TSR) who recorded his first win of the season last time out tossing 8.0 innings of 4 hit 1 run ball against the Indians. Halos with a ton of optimism and in their own back yard are worth a second look. Keep in mind, Angels are on a 5-1 stretch in home games, Haren heads to the bump 7-2 with a 4.76 ERA over ten starts vs Jays' (7-3 TSR), Morrow has never beaten Halos in three career starts posting an 0-3 mark with a 5.03 ERA and Jays are on a 1-6 slide opening a series with the hurler.
