Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Scott Diamond (5-1, 1.61 ERA)

There isn’t a lot to like about this year’s Twins if you’re a Minnesota baseball fan. But the Twinkies might have stumbled into a gem in Scott Diamond. The former Rule 5 pick is a soft-tosser who keeps the ball low in the zone and induces a lot of ground balls.

Minnesota, which is 10 games under .500, is 6-1 in Diamond’s seven starts this season. And because the Twins are so bad, you’re going to get a good price with the young lefty on the mound.

Shaun Marcum (5-3, 3.50 ERA)

Marcum isn’t making any Brewers fans forget about that kid Brett Lawrie in Toronto. That said, the former Blue Jay pitcher is on a nice little streak right now. Marcum is 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA over his last three starts and 23 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

Slumping

Joe Blanton (5-6, 5.40 ERA)

Remember when Blanton was no ordinary Joe for the Phillies at the beginning of the season? He carried a 2.81 ERA over his seven starts. That seems like a loooong time ago.

Blanton has given up five or more earned runs in each of his last five trips to the bump.

Gavin Floyd (4-6, 5.38 ERA)

You’ve got to think Floyd would have lost his spot in the rotation by now if the White Sox had an arm ready to step up. He hasn’t had a good outing since the second week of May and owes a 10.52 ERA over his last five starts.

So there’s that.

NY Yankees at Washington Nations

N.L. East Leading Washington Nationals tearing through the American League sweeping both Boston Red Sox at Fenway and Blue Jays up in Toronto outscoring the pair 31-16 return to the comfort of Nationals Park Friday for a three-game interleague series against A.L. East leading New York Yankees. The Nationals (38-23) will face a stiff test in this series as Yankees (36-25) have suddenly caught fire winning 15-of-19 going into Wednesday action including 5 straight over Mets, Braves defeating the two Senior Circuit clubs 27-11.

If probable pitching holds Washington has one of their best opening the series in Gio Gonzalez (8-2, 2.35 ERA). The lefty off a solid 6.1 innings of 3 hit, 2 run ball in a win over Red Sox is a smart 3-1 with a miniscule 1.93 ERA at home. A knock if there is one, Gonzalez as a member of A's did not have success vs Yankees going 1-4 in five starts giving up 25 hits, 21 runs over 24.6 innings of work. Yankees are scheduled to counter with Phil Hughes (6-5, 4.76 ERA) who stymied Mets last time out notching his second straight victory. Hughes has never faced Washington but does head to the hill 3-1 in 4 starts vs N.L. teams split between 3-0 at Yankee Stadium, 0-1 on the road.

Saturday, Jordan Zimmermann (3-5, 2.91 ERA) gets the call for Washington and possibly opposed by Andy Pettite (3-2, 2.81 ERA). Zimmermann has never had to contend with Yankee bats in his career but the Nationals are 3-1 at home with the hurler when facing A.L. teams. Pettitte tagged with a no-decision in his last start vs Mets heads to the mound with a 13-5 team start record vs N.L. clubs since returning to Yankees back in '07.

The finale could feature Edwin Jackson (3-3, 3.02 ERA) and Ivan Nova (8-2, 4.64 ERA) on respective mounds. However, keep a close eye out for Washington switching starters as Jackson a former White Sox, Tiger, Ray is on an 0-6 team slide vs Yankees. Nova blanking Braves over 7 innings last outting now sports an impressive 5-1 team start record vs N.L. clubs. Yankees 6-0 away with Nova this season are on a 12-2 stretch away from Yankee Stadium with the hurler.
