Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com
Streaking
Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (4-5, 4.16 ERA)
Moore looks to be turning it around after a slow start. He has won his last three starts, throwing at least six innings in each, and is coming off what was likely his best outing of the year. He allowed just one hit over seven innings while striking out eight in an 11-0 victory over Tampa Bay. The lefty owns a 2.57 ERA in his last three.
Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals (6-2, 2.98 ERA)
Lohse didn’t have his best stuff in his last outing, giving up three runs on 10 hits over seven innings, but he kept the Cards in the game again. Before that, he fired 7 2/3 shutout innings in a 2-0 win over Cleveland. In his last three trips to the bump, he owns a 1.74 ERA.
Slumping
Carlos Zambrano, Miami Marlins (4-5, 3.92 ERA)
Chicago Cubs fans knew this was coming. Zambrano cruised through most of his starts in his first couple of months with the Marlins, but has hit a rough patch recently. He hasn’t gotten through the third inning in either of his last two starts allowing 11 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Big Z walked six batters before getting the hook in his last outing, in the loss to Matt Moore’s Rays.
Jeff Francis, Colorado Rockies (0-1, 12.46 ERA)
Francis improved from his first start back with the Rockies, but that isn’t saying much. He still gave up four runs on eight hits while walking three over 5 1/3 innings of a no decision. The Canadian lefty was drilled for eight runs over 3 1/3 innings in his first start since rejoining the team. If we had more to choose from, he would have escaped the Slumping section.

Rays at Nationals
Tampa Bay (38-29, +511) captured a 5-4 win as a minus-144 road favorite in Tuesday night’s series opener. David Price gave up three earned runs over seven innings en route to collecting his ninth win of the season. Fernando Rodney retired the side in order in the ninth for his 20th save. Carlos Pena led the Rays’ offense with a pair of hits, including his ninth homer of the year.
Washington (38-27, +1005) took an 18-14 home record into Wednesday’s middle game of this three-game set. The Nationals were leading the National League East by three games.
Nats manager Davey Johnson created controversy and drew the ire of Tampa Bay skipper Joe Maddon by appealing to the umpires in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s loss to the Rays. Johnson asked the umps to check the glove of Tampa Bay reliever Joel Peralta, who formerly played for the Nats. The umps indeed found the presence of a foreign substance in Peralta’s glove and he was immediately ejected. After the game, Maddon told the press, “It's kind of a common practice that people have done this for years. To point one guy out because he had pitched here a couple of years, it's probably common knowledge based on that. So I thought it was a real cowardly -- and I've used that word twice this year -- it was kind of a [wimpy] move to go out there and do that under those circumstances. I like the word [wimpy] right there." Instead of wimpy, Maddon chose a word that can also mean cat.
Tampa Bay went into Wednesday night’s action in third place in the AL East, 2 ½ games back of the loop-leading Yankees.
Johnson will give the starting nod to Gio Gonzalez, who is 8-3 with a 2.52 ERA. The Nats are 10-3 in his 13 outings and the ‘under’ is 7-6. Gonzalez is 3-2 with a 2.33 ERA in six home starts.
The Rays will send LHP Matt Moore (4-5, 4.16 ERA) to the bump. Moore is 1-2 with a 5.01 ERA in four road assignments.
Tampa Bay has a 17-14 road record but has struggled against lefties with a 9-13 ledger.
Washington owns a 9-7 record in 16 games against left-handed pitchers.
The ‘over’ is 31-30 overall for the Nats, 3-1 in their last four games.
The ‘under’ is 35-28 overall for the Rays, but they have seen the ‘over’ go 5-2 in their last seven contests.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, most books were listing the Nats as minus-135 favorites with a total of seven ‘over’ (minus-115). Gamblers can take Washington on the run line (minus 1½ runs) for a plus-160 payout (risk $100 to win $160).
The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Eastern.
Marlins at Red Sox
Most books opened Boston (34-33, -572) as a minus-135 ‘chalk’ with a total of 10 ‘over’ (minus-120). The Red Sox are plus-150 on the run line (risk $100 to win $150).
Miami (33-34, -718) lost a 7-5 decision in Tuesday’s series opener at Fenway Park. Mark Buehrle gave up six earned runs in five innings of work as his record fell to 5-8. Logan Morrison supplied all of the Marlins’ offense by driving in five runs with a pair of doubles and a homer.
Boston took a three-game winning streak into Wednesday night’s tilt. The Red Sox had won five of their last six.
Ozzie Guillen’s squad has lost 11 of its last 13 games since June. Guillen will send Carlos Zambrano (4-5, 3.92) to the hill in this spot. The veteran righty is 3-2 with a 2.36 ERA in seven road assignments.
Bobby Valentine will counter Zambrano with RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA. Matsuzaka is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in one home start t his year.
Miami has played .500 baseball on the road with a 16-16 record. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are just 15-19 at home.
The ‘over’ is 37-28 overall for Boston, 20-13 in its home games.
The ‘over’ is 34-31 overall for the Marlins, but they have seen the ‘under’ cash at a lucrative 20-12 clip in their road games.
Dice-K will throw the first pitch at 7:10 p.m. Eastern.
B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets
After getting swept by the Yankees at Turner Field last week, Atlanta took two of three in the Bronx thanks to a 10-5 win in Wednesday’s rubber game in the Bronx. The Braves hooked up their backers as plus-145 underdogs. Jason Heyward cracked a pair of homers, while Martin Prado went 3-for-5 with a double and a dinger. Tommy Hanson worked only five innings but picked up his eighth win nonetheless.
Veteran RHP Roy Oswalt will make his debut for the Texas Rangers on Friday when they host the Rockies. Oswalt pitched four minor-league games to prepare, posting a 1-1 record and 5.87 ERA.
After missing four consecutive games with a virus, Texas slugger Josh Hamilton returned to the lineup in his team’s 7-3 win Tuesday at San Diego. Hamilton went 2-for-5 with a triple and a pair of RBIs to improve his MLB-best total to 66.
The Rangers took a five-game winning streak and a five-game lead over the Angels in the AL West into Wednesday’s game against the Padres.
The ‘over’ is an MLB-best 43-25 overall for the Phillies.
The ‘under’ is an MLB-best 43-25 for the Angels.
Brewers - White Sox Series Preview
Sportspic.com
The Milwaukee Brewers knew that the loss of Prince Fielder would have an adverse affect on their lineup. However, the Brewers still rank 10th in the majors in runs scored, even despite sitting six games below .500 and fourth in the National League Central division. Milwaukee has not been able to overcome inconsistencies with its pitching staff, and that could lead to more sports betting troubles when they play a Chicago White Sox offense that ranks seventh in runs scored.
Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago White Sox Friday, 8:10 PM ET
One bright spot so far for the Brewers has been the play of Michael Fiers, who has actually been better on the road than at home so far this season. The 27-year old Fiers has allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings on the road, compared to eight runs over 11 innings at home, and Milwaukee has to be hoping he can remain solid in the opener at Chicago. The White Sox will counter with 23-year old left-hander Chris Sale, who is 8-2 with a 2.46 ERA, but is coming off of his worst start of the season. Sale had won five-straight while holding opponents to two runs or less in each of them, before giving up five in just 5.2 innings of work against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even if Fiers pitches well, the Brewers could be in trouble with Sale on the mound for the White Sox.
Pick: Chicago White Sox
Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago White Sox Saturday, 7:15 PM ET
The brightest spot for Milwaukee in terms of pitching this season has been Zack Greinke, who leads the team in ERA with a 3.10 mark, and that includes the relief staff as well. Greinke is 7-2 and has looked good in his last two starts despite losing both of them, but should be fine to bounce back with a win if he can get a little run support. That shouldn’t be a problem with Phillip Humber on the mound for Chicago. The White Sox pitcher has an ERA of 6.01 on the season, and has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last three sportsbook starts.
Pick: Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago White Sox Sunday, 2:10 PM ET
Veteran Randy Wolf will get the call to close out the series for the Brewers, but with a 5.11 ERA on the season, it’s not looking too pretty. The 35-year old has really struggled this season, with two wins in 14 MLB betting starts, and faces another unfavorable matchup to close out this one. The White Sox will send Jose Quintana to the mound, and while he has taken time adjusting to his role as a starter, his 1.53 ERA isn’t bad at all. Quintana hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in any appearance this season, and if he hits that mark again in the series finale, he will help Chicago close out the series with a win as pitching struggles continue to hurt the Brewers.
Pick: Chicago White Sox

AL teams were 8-6 Tuesday, they're 117-88 against NL teams in interleague play this season, with four days to go. Remember there are DHs in games in American League parks, no DHs in National League parks. It doesn't seem to affect totals either way.
