Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (8-2, 3.24 ERA)

Burnett keeps forcing us to include him in this section every time he takes the ball. In his last trip to the hill he fired six shutout innings, allowing only two hits while striking out four. It was his seventh straight win and he has allowed more than two runs just once in the last nine starts. He ranks third in the MLB starter money standings, having earned 9.66 units for his supporters.

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds (9-3, 2.21 ERA)

Cueto looks to cap off a terrific month Thursday against the San Francisco Giants. He improved to 4-0 in June by blanking the Twins over seven innings while striking out a season-high nine batters. Cueto now has 25 strikeouts over his last three starts and has thrown at least 105 pitches in each of his last five outings.

Slumping

Josh Outman, Colorado Rockies (0-3, 8.64 ERA)

There isn't much in the way of true Slumping pitchers set to go Thursday, but Outman is one to tread carefully with after his start was pushed back a day. He has allowed at least four runs in four of his five starts and gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Texas. He fired 92 pitches in that one, the most he has thrown in a start all year. Outman owns a 9.00 ERA and has allowed four homers in his last three.

White Sox - Yankees Series Preview
Sportspic.com

The Chicago White Sox are just behind the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central Division. The New York Yankees are just ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the A.L. East.

Game 1: Thursday, June 28

When you do your homework before making a sports bet in a Major League Baseball game, you simply have to pry beneath the surface to make sure you're sizing up a matchup with accuracy and awareness. Chicago's scheduled starter, Dylan Axelrod, carries a 3.52 earned-run average, which is terrific for any American League starter. However, one then has to poke beneath the surface and realize that Axelrod – scheduled to pitch on Saturday, June 23 – had gone a month and a half without performing for the White Sox; he hadn't pitched since May 6. Moreover, Axelrod had only one start to his credit this season before his June 23 outing. He's making a spot start because the White Sox rotation has been disrupted by an injury to starting pitcher John Danks.

New York starter Ivan Nova's earned-run average is 4.32, but Nova has thrown a lot more innings than Axelrod, and more importantly, he has been extremely effective in the month of June, going longer into games while establishing more command of his pitches. Picking Chicago here would be an example of reaching for fool's gold. The Yankees merit more trust from a Betting perspective on Thursday night.

Pick: New York Yankees

Game 2: Friday, June 29

This is yet another example of how the surface earned-run averages attached to pitchers doesn't begin to tell the full story. The White Sox will put Jose Quintana on the hill in the second instalment of this series. Quintana has a gleaming 1.53 earned-run average, making him a very bright spot in a starting rotation that has clearly overachieved this season. Quintana will go up against New York starter C.C. Sabathia, who has a 3.55 ERA in his two starts and has been a typically reliable workhorse for the Yankees. A purely numerical analysis would tell you to pick Quintana and the White Sox, but this is a big summer series in which the Yankees – playing at home – figure to have more confidence. Moreover, Quintana could very easily be intimidated by seeing Sabathia in the opposing dugout. The realization that he'll have a small margin for error could unnerve Quintana in this game. Picking Chicago here feels like more of a risk than the numbers would initially indicate; picking the Yankees is the percentage play.

Pick: New York Yankees

Game 3: Saturday, June 30

Looking at this game, sportsbooks should be more likely to favor the White Sox. In the first two games of this series, Chicago is sending youthful pitchers to the bump, but in game three, the boys from the Windy City will have a veteran in their corner. Jake Peavy is a proven big-league pitcher, and more specifically, he's someone used to shouldering a big workload for a starting rotation. Peavy owns a 2.74 earned-run average, which is exceptionally good for the American League. His opponent, Hiroki Kuroda, claims a solid 3.57 ERA, but Peavy is the alpha male in this matchup, and he'll shut down the Yankees in a convincing display. Picking Chicago in this game makes a lot of sense.

Pick: Chicago White Sox

Game 4: Sunday, July 1

In the finale of this series, you should exercise plenty of caution… and get ready to expect a noisy 8-6 type of ballgame in which the bullpens will get a lot of work. The White Sox will send Gavin Floyd to the bump with a 5.20 earned-run average. The Yankees will put the ball in the hands of Phil Hughes, who has a 4.94 ERA. This is not an easy game to call, but Hughes has not been able to establish consistency for any prolonged period of time. Since Yankee Stadium features such a short porch in right field, Hughes is always at risk of giving up home runs. This is not going to help his confidence when pitching at home, and that's what tips the scales in favor of the White Sox. Give Chicago the edge on Sunday.

Pick: Chicago White Sox

LA Angels at Toronto Blue Jays

Fresh off a 10-4 thumping in Boston Wednesday afternoon and having lost two in-a-row, the Toronto Blue Jays look to reverse fortunes when they return home to host the Los Angeles Angels in a four-game weekend set. A rash of injuries to their starting rotation Toronto opens the set with Brett Cecil (1-0, 2.45 ERA). The southpaw off a 4-11 (6-14 TSR) season last year has shown promise since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas allowing just one run on five hits in six innings against the Marlins in his last start and has surrendered just three runs in eleven frames with Jays this season. Cecil is 1-2 in five career starts vs LAA with a 2-3 team start record over the span. Meanwhile, streaking Halos heading north of the border on a smart 6-1 stretch platting a whopping 7.4 runs/game counter with Dan Haren (5-7, 4.24 ERA). The righty is 2-1 his last three starts but has given up 6 yard-ball, 14 runs over 16 2/3 innings. Haren at the wrong end of a 5-0 decision vs Jays earlier this season is 7-3 life-time vs Toronto with Halos 7-4 over the eleven starts. LAA swinging hot sticks are worth a second look. Keep in mind, Angels are ridding a sparkling 13-1 streak in road games, 6-1 stretch vs a left-handed starter.
