Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Mike Leake, Cincinnati Reds (3-6, 3.96 ERA)

A couple days ago, we got Travis Wood confused with Leake in Streaking and Slumping. Thankfully, one of our loyal readers out there reminded us it was Leake, not Wood, who got caught stealing designer t-shirts.

Leake is pitching fantastic these days but the Reds aren’t taking advantage. The club is 2-3 in his last five starts even though Leake carries a 1.95 ERA over the same stretch. The under is also 5-0 in his last five trips to the hill.

Mark Buehrle, Miami Marlins (9-8, 3.13 ERA)

Offseason pickups Heath Bell and Carlos Zambrano haven’t worked out but Buehrle is living up to his big contract. The Marlins are 4-0 in the soft-tossing lefty’s last four starts and the under is 3-0-1 in those same four games.

Buerhle struck out seven in his last start against the Nationals, making it four straight outings with at least seven punch-outs.

“I’m still scratching my own head to try to figure out what I’m doing striking all these guys out because it’s a lot of guys,” Buerhle told reporters after the game.

SLUMPING

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (12-1, 2.66 ERA)

It’s only a two-start slump, but it’s noteworthy this early because of who we’re talking about. Dickey is still the runaway favorite to win the National League Cy Young award but he’s been tagged for five earned runs in each of the last two appearances.

Are we beginning to see 37-year-old knuckleballer come back down to Earth? Is the law of averages in play here, or will Dickey’s magical campaign continue?

Jerome Williams, Los Angeles Angels (6-6, 4.67)

It’s been four consecutive forgettable outings for the Angels' fifth starter. Williams has surrendered four or more runs in each of those starts. That’s not terrible for a fifth starter but it still stings because the Angels were favored in three of the four contests.

This last appearance on July 14 was his first since coming off the DL. Reports are he suffered an asthma attack in the dugout after getting the hook against the Yankees.

“Although he gave up a couple of home runs, pitched better than his line score shows,” Halos manager Mike Scioscia told Associated Press.

New York at Washington

The Nationals and Metropolitans complete their three-game series in Washington Thursday afternoon with Nats sending lefty Gio Gonalez (12-4, 2.93 ERA) to the mound while Mets counter with knuckle-ball hurler R.A. Dickey (12-1, 2.66 ERA.). Tough going against Nats with Gonzalez however, Mets are on an 8-4 stretch avoiding a three-game sweep on the road, 4-1 off back-2-back losses with Dickey and 6-1 last seven as an underdog of +$1.10 to +$1.50 with Dickey. Besides, Mets are on a 4-1 streak in Washington with Dickey touching toe to rubber.

New York at Oakland

Two hot clubs collide in Oakland this weekend when the Athletics' host Yankees in a four-game set. A's have been pretty hot in July posting a sparkling 10-2 after splitting a two-game mini series vs. A.L. West leading Rangers. A's climbing back into Wild Card contention open the set with A.J. Griffin (1-0, 2.62 ERA) who earned his first Major League win last time out after recording no-decisions in his first three starts with the club (3-1 TSR). Yankees off a series sweep of Jays have won 9-of-11 outscoring opponents by a combined 69-46 score and are on a smoking 16-6 surge the past twenty-two on the diamond plating 5.5 per contest. Bombers counter with Freddy Garcia (4-2, 5.25 ERA). The hurler is 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA since returning to the rotation replacing injured Andy Pettitte. Yankees should be feeling pretty confident heading into Oakland. Yankees swept A's earlier this season marking 9 straight victories as visitor in the series and have notched a 13-1 record last 14 meetings in Oakland. The betting market has Yankees -$1.15 favorites with the total hovering around 7.5 runs.

White Sox at Red Sox: What Bettors Need to Know
By Covers.com

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox (-125, 10.5)

One player lands on the disabled list, and another comes off. A day after placing David Ortiz on the DL with a heel injury, the Boston Red Sox are expected to activate second baseman Dustin Pedroia (thumb) from the 15-day DL for Thursday’s finale of a four-game series against the visiting Chicago White Sox. The Red Sox have not had a lot of trouble scoring runs against the White Sox and will try to make it three of four in the finale.

Pedroia’s customary No. 2 spot in the batting order has been taken over by Carl Crawford, who has combined with Jacoby Ellsbury to go 10-for-23 with nine runs scored out of the top two spots during the series. Pedroia will likely hit third, in front of red-hot Adrian Gonzalez. The White Sox have dropped three of five to allow the Detroit Tigers to creep back into the picture in the American League Central. The pitching has been the big problem, with the staff serving up an average of 5.8 runs in six games since the All-Star break.

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Jose Quintana (4-1, 2.60 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (8-3, 5.54)

Quintana has not lost since June 6 but has been knocked around in two of his last three turns. The 23-year old Colombia native was reached for five runs and eight hits in five innings at Kansas City last weekend but was bailed out by the offense in a no-decision. He beat the Texas Rangers with eight strong innings before the All-Star break but had allowed six runs in six innings to the New York Yankees on June 29.

Buchholz came off the disabled list before his last start and looked great through the first six innings before running out of gas in the seventh. The 27-year old was charged with four runs on just three hits while walking one and striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings. Buchholz has not had much success against Chicago in the past, going 1-2 with a 6.53 ERA in four career starts. Paul Konerko is 4-for-8 with a homer against the right-hander.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings in Boston.
* White Sox are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Boston.
* Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.
* White Sox are 2-7 in the last nine meetings.

UMP TRENDS - Paul Schrieber:

* Over is 18-7-1 in Schriebers last 26 games behind home plate.
* Home team is 16-5 in Schriebers last 21 games behind home plate vs. Boston.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Gonzalez has multiple hits in each of the last four games to lift his average to .296 - its highest point since Apr. 28.

2. The White Sox have not lost a series since dropping two of three to the crosstown-rival Cubs last month.

3. Red Sox OF Cody Ross became the third player in the majors this season to hit three-run homers in consecutive at-bats when he went deep in the third and fourth innings on Wednesday.
