Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (15-4, 2.50 ERA)

The Rays southpaw is one of the major motors behind the team’s August push. Price hasn’t tasted defeat since June 16 and is 7-0 in the 10 starts since, never allowing more than three earned runs in any of those appearances. He gave up only two runs on seven hits in a 4-2 win over the Twins Saturday.

Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals (12-2, 2.72 ERA)

Lohse is another starter that has gone sometime without an “L” on his resume. The Cardinals righty hasn't dropped a start since June 15 and is 6-0 in the last 10 outings. Lohse went toe-to-toe with Phillies ace Roy Halladay in his last start, taking a no-decision after allowing just one run on four hits through seven innings.

Slumping

Matt Harvey, New York Mets (1-3, 3.63 ERA)

After winning his first big-league start, Harvey has been up and down over his last three. He’s dropped three in a row and posted an ERA of 4.76 in that span. The young right-hander allowed just two runs – off a two-run home run in the first inning – over six innings in his last start but still got a loss versus Atlanta.

Marco Estrada, Milwaukee Brewers (0-5, 4.36 ERA)

Estrada hasn’t won a single game in 20 starts this season. In his last start, the Brewers righty blew what should have been a sure thing against the Astros. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits and only lasted four innings.

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates

It looks like the Pirates may be heading for another August swoon. They've gone 5-9 this month and have lost six of their last seven on the diamond falling seven games back of Reds in the division. Brings back memories of last August when Bucs tanked to the tune of 8-22 split between 5-12 at PNC Park, 3-10 on the highway. Meanwhile, Dodgers on a 9-3 spurt including the first three of this four game set with Pittsburgh have taken over top spot in the N.L. West. Bucs try to reverse the current August slide handing the ball to A.J. Burnett (14-4, 3.32 ERA) in the finale. The right-hander off his first home defeat of the season a sub-par performance vs D-Backs allowing five runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings has yet to face LA as a member of Pirates. Burnett will certanly hope things work out better than his last start vs Dodgers in which he gave up 6 runs over 3.0 innings as a Yankee back in 2010. Dodgers counter with Joe Blanton (8-10, 4.61 ERA) who has allowed six runs in 11 innings of work over two starts since being trade to Los Angeles. Blanton is 1-1 vs Pirates this season over one start and one relief appearance allowing three earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of work. Pirates 10-1 in Burnett's home starts, 7-1 off a loss the previous night handing the ball to Burnett have been pegged -$1.30 favorite

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres complete their four-game set at Turner Field with Kris Medlen (3-1, 2.28 ERA) and Jason Marquis (8-10, 5.05 ERA) on respective mounds. Braves in a three-way tie for the Wild Card spot will be feeling pretty good about their chances. The Braves have won each of Medlen's three starts this season and his last 14 as a starter dating back to 2010. Medlen will need to be at his best, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 8.10 ERA in three relief appearances vs Friars. On the flip side, Marquis blanking Pirates over 9 innings last outing is on a smart 5-1 stretch and brings to the mound a solid 3-1 team start record last four vs Atlanta. Despite all the flaws, Padres springing to life winning 7 of 10 and on a 8-3 stretch in game-four of a series, 4-1 last five on the road with Marquis are worth a second look (+$1.80)
