Thursday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Jeremy Guthrie, Kansas City Royals (4-3, 3.13)

Guthrie has turned his season around. He is 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his past eight outings - all Royals' victories. Guthrie was traded after going 3-9 with the Colorado Rockies to Kansas City on July 20 and promptly lost his first three starts. He has not lost since, and is especially tough at home where he owns a 1.22 ERA in his past five outings. Guthrie toes the rubber at Kauffman Stadium against the White Sox next.

Wandy Rodriguez, Pittsburgh Pirates (11-13, 3.65)

Rodriguez collected his third win in a row after recording a quality start against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The 33-year-old Dominican yielded three runs on nine hits in six innings in the 7-6 triumph. Rodriguez fell to 8-9 in his career versus the Brewers, his next opponent, after walking four in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-5 loss on Aug. 24.

SLUMPING

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds (17-9, 2.92)

Cueto remained stuck on 17 wins as he was tagged for six runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of a loss at Miami on Saturday. It was the third straight setback for the 26-year-old Dominican, who has surrendered 14 runs and 26 hits in 15 1/3 frames during that span. He looks to get back on track against the Cubs on Thursday.

Esmerling Vasquez, Minnesota Twins (0-2, 7.53)

Vasquez allowed three runs, three hits, walked four and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-0 loss to Chicago on Friday. His previous 141 major league appearances were all in relief with Arizona from 2009-11, when he was 5-10. Vasquez takes the bump against the Indians next.

Thursday’s Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Hot

Clayton Richard (+115), San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks: San Diego has won Richard’s past five starts and seven of his last eight. Over those seven wins, Richard has got the decision in six of them, bumping his season record to 13-12. He’s given up three runs or less in all seven of those Padres wins. The Padres have also won all four of his career starts against Arizona, including all three this season.

Barry Zito (-150), San Francisco Giants vs. Colorado Rockies: The Giants keep mowing opponents down when Zito is on the mound, winning his past eight starts. Zito’s picked up the decision in his last two, pitching brilliantly, allowing only one run in 13 innings of work. The Giants are 2-0 in Zito’s 2012 starts against Colorado.

Wandy Rodriguez (+105), Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers: It may be a little too late, but at least Rodriguez can say the Pirates’ collapse wasn’t his fault. The Bucs have won his past four starts, and he’s allowed only four runs combined over that span. However, his last loss was at home to the Brewers, against Mike Fiers (Aug. 24), today’s opposing pitcher.

Jeremy Guthrie (-110), Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago White Sox: The Royals have won Guthrie’s past eight starts, and he hasn’t allowed an earned run in four of them. Over that eight game stretch, two of the wins have come against the White Sox, and he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in one of them.

Yu Darvish (+115), Texas Rangers at L.A. Angels: The Rangers have won his past four starts, with Darvish picking up the decision in three of them. It’s fair to say that he’s pitching his best baseball of the season right now. In three of the starts, Darvish hasn’t allowed more than one earned run. The Rangers are 3-1 behind Darvish against the Angels this season.

Zack Greinke (-125), Angels vs. Rangers: Even though the Angels lost his last outing, he still gets credit for being hot because he left that game in the ninth, with one out, up 2-0 at Kansas City. The ’closer’ came in and gave up two straight home runs to lose the game. Greinke had won his previous four starts and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his past five starts.

Cold

Bud Norris (+210), Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals: Houston has lost Norris’ past five starts and 16 of his last 17, including 12 in a row on the road. His road ERA in 16 starts this season is 7.34, compared to 1.90 at home. It’s been a Jekyll and Hyde season for Norris; he won his five games this season before June, when the Astros were 8-1 over his first nine starts.

Jamie Garcia (-230), Cardinals vs. Astros: The Cardinals have lost Garcia’s past two starts, but the real streak here is that they have lost his past five starts against the Astros, and he’s taken the loss in four of them. In two starts against the Astros this season, he’s given up six runs in each.

Johnny Cueto (-190), Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs: The Reds have to be concerned that their ace is heading towards the playoffs in a major slump. Before September, he was a Cy Young candidate. Now, he can’t seem to get anyone out. He’s lost his past three starts, and his last outing was the worst of all, as he allowed six runs over just 4 ½ innings. He’s given up 14 runs over his past three starts.

Tyler Skaggs (-125), Diamondbacks vs. Padres: Skaggs started his major league career strong, picking up a late August win in his first outing, but it’s been tough ever since. Arizona has lost his past four starts, and he’s given up five runs in each of his last two, one of them a 6-5 loss at San Diego.
