Red Sox, Orioles meet in Baltimore
By: StatFox.com

The Orioles will be hoping to earn a big home victory over the Red Sox on Thursday night.

The Red Sox took two of their three games against the White Sox last series, and they have now won each of their past three series. Boston needed to get hot, and that is exactly what the team did. The Sox have won eight of their past 10 and now find themselves in second in the AL East. The Orioles, meanwhile, took two of their three against the first place Yankees. Baltimore had lost seven straight heading into that series with New York, so the team really needed to find a way to win. The starters in this Thursday night game are LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (4-1, 2.77 ERA, 59 K) for the Red Sox and RHP Wade Miley (1-3, 3.02 ERA, 51 K) for the Orioles. Baltimore is 5-4 against Boston on the season thus far, and the Orioles also happen to be 14-3 against the money line when playing at home in June over the past two seasons. They are, however, hurt by the fact that Wade Miley’s teams are 1-11 against the money line in home games against division opponents over the past three seasons.

The Red Sox have found their groove recently and they’ll be hoping that Eduardo Rodriguez can keep them hot on Thursday. The lefty has been incredibly consistent this season, as he has allowed three or fewer earned runs in all but one of his appearances this season. He most recently shutout the Mariners in six innings of work on May 26, and the Sox will be hoping that he can turn in a similar result on Thursday. Offensively, two guys that might be able to really spark Boston in this game are 1B Mitch Moreland (.276 BA, 6 HR, 28 RBI) and OF Mookie Betts (.271 BA, 9 HR, 32 RBI). Moreland is 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI against Miley in his career, and Betts is 1-for-1 with a double and two RBI. Those are obviously small sample sizes, but Boston will need both guys to come through. Betts is definitely going to need to turn it on soon, as he has really been having a disappointing season. He is, however, far too good of a hitter for that to continue for long.

The Orioles can really use a series victory over the Red Sox and that starts with Thursday’s game. Wade Miley is going to need to turn in a solid start, which is not what he did in his most recent outing. That came against the Astros on May 27, and Miley allowed four earned runs in only five innings. It’s important that he finds a way to work into the sixth at least in this one. With Zach Britton out, this Orioles bullpen is not as good as it usually is. On offense, the Orioles are still waiting for 3B Manny Machado (.205 BA, 10 HR, 25 RBI) to wake up. Machado is 0-for-18 over the past four games, and that is really out of character for him. Machado is a superstar and has never hit lower than .262 in a single season. That means he should be due for a hot streak very shortly.
