Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (3-1, 2.73 ERA)

Hamels allowed a leadoff double in his last start, then settled down to retire the next 18 Diamondbacks he faced, cruising to a 7-2 victory. He ended up going eight innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Hamels now has 30 strikeouts compared to just three walks.

Jon Niese, New York Mets (2-0, 2.81 ERA)

It looks like the lefty is really hitting his stride this season. After going 11-11 with a 4.40 ERA last season, Niese has 23 strikeouts and seven walks in 25 2/3 innings this year. He has been stuck with two consecutive no-decisions, but hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his four starts.

Slumping

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (0-3, 7.32 ERA)

Wainwright was having major problems coming back from Tommy John surgery, but may have made a breakthrough in his last outing. He had allowed 15 runs combined in his first three starts before holding the Cubs to a single earned run in a six-inning no-decision. Still, he’s already allowed five homers this year and has trouble cracking 90 mph right now.

Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins (0-3, 11.02 ERA)

The Twins skipped Liriano’s last turn in the rotation to see if he could get it together. He’s allowed five runs in each of his first four starts and has 12 strikeouts compared to 13 walks. Liriano threw 70 pitches in Saturday’s bullpen session and says he feels better now, focusing on keeping the ball down in the zone.

Philadelphia at Atlanta

It's very early, but the Phillies who have won five consecutive N.L. East titles have stumbled out of the gate without All-Stars Chase Utley and Ryan Howard in the lineup. In the early going Phillies batting .247 as a team, producing 3.3 runs/game sit in fourth place in the NL East with a 11-12 record including 6-7 on the road. Meanwhile, Braves off to a quick start are fighting it out with Washington for top spot in the division at 14-9 overall, 7-3 playing at Turner Field.

Phillies have a great shot at winning the the series as they'll start the three game set with Cole Hamels (3-1, 2.73 ERA) on the mound while Braves counter with Brandon Beachy (2-1 1.05 ERA). Hamels in great form allowing just 5 runs the past three recording a 3-0 mark with a 2.14 ERA has the edge. The southpaw posted a 3-1 TSR vs Braves last season and has a sparkling 13-3 TSR in May and we find Beachy ridding an 0-6 TSR in his career vs Philadelphia.

Wednesday, it's ace Roy Halladay (3-2, 1.95 ERA) hooked up against Tommy Hanson (3-2, 3.00 ERA). DOC the workhorse who has gone at least seven innings allowing three or fewer runs each time out heads to the mound with a smart 4-1 TSR record vs Atlanta wearing a Phillie uniform. Hanson has a 1-3 TSR at home vs Phillies.

Thursday, Joe Blanton (2-3, 3.81 ERA) gets the call and will share the mound with Randall Delgado (2-2, 6.30 ERA). Could go either way, although Blanton had one of his best starts in years Saturday allowing just 2 hits over 7.1 innings the hurler has not handled Braves well in his career going 1-4 in ten attempts (5-5 TSR). Randall faced Phillies just once last year tagged with a ND allowing 2 runs over 5 frames in a 4-2 loss hooked against Cliff Lee.

Tuesday's MLB Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards
VegasInsider.com

Orioles at Yankees

As of late Monday night, most betting shops had New York (13-9, +143) installed as a minus-200 favorite in the second game of this series. The total is 10 ½ ‘under’ (minus-120) and the Yankees are available for even-money for run-line wagers (minus 1 ½ runs).

Baltimore (14-9, +735) had won six of its last seven games going into Monday’s series lid-lifter in the Bronx. The Orioles took two of three from Oakland at Camden Yards over the weekend, including a 5-2 win Sunday at even-money odds. Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, the O’s erupted for five runs and won on Wilson Betemit’s three-run, walk-off blast with one out in the final frame.

The Yankees won a three-game series at home over the Tigers thanks to Sunday’s 6-2 win as minus-190 favorites. Derek Jeter went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks to improve his batting average to .396. Curtis Granderson popped his eighth homer of the season and Andruw Jones went deep for a third time.

New York swept a three-game series at Baltimore from April 9-11. The ‘under’ went 2-1 in the three meetings. In Monday’s series opener, the Yankees won by a 2-1 count as minus-165 ‘chalk.’ Eric Chavez cracked a two-run dinger and Mariano Rivera picked up his fifth save.

Phil Hughes (1-2, 9.53 ERA) will take the hill for the Yankees on Tuesday night. They are 1-2 in his three outings and totals have been a wash (1-1-1).

Baltimore will give the starting nod to Brian Matusz, who is 0-3 with a 5.66 ERA. The ‘under’ is 3-1 in his four starts. The left-hander took a no-decision in his last outing when he went six innings in a 5-2 win over the A’s.

Joe Girardi’s club is 5-3 in eight previous games against left-handed pitching. The Yankees are 7-4 at home. Meanwhile, the O’s are 12-8 vs. righties, 6-5 on the road.

The ‘under’ is 13-9 overall for the O’s, but the ‘over’ is 6-4-1 in their road games.

The ‘over’ is 11-10 overall for the Yankees, 6-5 in their home outings.

Baltimore has the best bullpen in baseball to date with a 1.83 ERA.

Tampa Bay beat Seattle 3-2 in 12 innings last night. The Rays own the lead in the AL East, one game in front of the O’s and 1 ½ games ahead of the third-place Yankees.

The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Eastern on the YES Network.

Marlins at Giants

Most spots are listing San Francisco (12-10, +189) as a minus-160 favorite with a total of six ‘under’ (minus-120). The Giants are plus-150 on the run line (risk $100 to win $150).

Miami (8-14, -880) suffered a 9-5 loss Monday afternoon to Arizona as a minus-175 home favorite. The loss dropped the Marlins to 1-8 in their last nine games, as they fell six games back of the National League East lead from the division cellar.

Ozzie Guillen’s club is an abysmal 2-9 on the road. The Fish will try to right their road woes with Ricky Nolasco (2-0, 3.20) on the hill. The Marlins are 3-1 in his four previous outings.

San Francisco is 6-3 at home. The Giants are in second place in the NL West, four games back of the loop-leading Dodgers (pending L.A.’s late-night Monday result).

San Francisco RHP Matt Cain (1-1, 2.37) will toe the rubber in this spot. He threw back-to-back gems spanning 18 innings and including just three hits, one walk and 15 strikeouts. But Cain took his first loss of the season at Cincinnati on April 24, throwing a season-high 116 pitches.

The ‘under’ is 12-10 overall for the Giants, 7-2 in their home games.

The ‘over’ is 11-10 overall for the Marlins, but the ‘under’ is 7-2 in their last nine games. The ‘under’ is 7-4 in Miami’s 11 road games.

B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets

Oakland RHP Bartolo Colon has been one of baseball’s biggest surprises this year. The veteran hurler has allowed two runs or less in five of his six assignments. Colon took a shutout into the ninth of Sunday’s game at Baltimore but allowed a pair of infield hits before his bullpen faltered in a 5-2 loss. He has a 2.53 ERA.

Pittsburgh spanked Atlanta 9-3 Monday as a plus-155 underdog to split a four-game series at Turner Field. The Pirates are in a third-place tie with Milwaukee, four games back of the Cardinals in the NL Central going into Tuesday’s series opener at St. Louis.

Detroit has lost eight of its last 10 games since it swept a three-game series at Kansas City. The Tigers will try to get back on track Tuesday night at home when they host the Royals, who have dropped four straight head-to-head’s against the Tigers.

Going into Monday’s games, Oakland’s .209 team batting average was MLB’s lowest. San Diego had the NL’s worst batting average (.212).

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Miami at San Francisco

The Marlins, touted as contenders in the NL East have not lived up to expectations. After yesterday's loss to D-Backs the Marlins fell deeper into last place with it's 8-14 start to the campaign depleting betting accounts to the tune of -$882. Miami now on a 3-17 (-$1759) skid against NL West opponents including 1-6 (-$455) on the road backing light hitting Miami would seem a stretch. However, any team can win on any given day, even Miami. If there was ever a reasonable shot for Marlins the opener with Ricky Nolasco toeing the rubber may be it. Nolasco fresh a strong seven-inning outing allowing one run, five hits while striking out five was in line for the 'W' but got tagged with a ND as Heath Bell failed to preserve a one-run lead and Fish sank 3-2 against Mets. The righty deserved better and should get his team-leading third victory in San Francisco. Nolasco is 4-2 life-time vs Giants including a sparkling 3-0 with a 0.76 ERA at AT&T Park. The betting market has Miami anywhere from +$1.37 to +$1.48 underdog depending on locale.
