Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (5-0, 3.05 ERA)

Shields became the AL’s first five-game winner by throwing six solid innings in a 5-4 win over the Mariners in his last start. He struck out a season-high 11 batters in that outing. However, he also yielded a pair of homers for the second straight start and also walked four batters. Shields has thrown at least 112 pitches in each of his last four trips to the hill.

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (4-0, 3.64 ERA)

Romero didn’t have his best stuff in his last outing, allowing five runs over eight innings, but it was enough to help the Jays to an 11-5 win over Texas. Romero walked three straight batters in the fifth before allowing a two-run double. He has chucked at least eight innings three times already this season.

Slumping

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (2-4, 6.51 ERA)

Danks was drilled for seven runs (six earned) and a pair of home runs in a loss to the Indians last week. It was the second straight start in which he allowed seven runs and he also committed two errors. "I know I will get this ship righted," he told reporters, "but it sure as hell would be nice if we got it righted pretty soon, 'cause it's getting pretty damn frustrating."

Kevin Millwood, Seattle Mariners (0-3, 5.34 ERA)

Millwood dropped his third straight start last week, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Texas Rangers. The veteran is still looking for his first win with the Mariners, but has worked into the seventh inning in his last two trips to the hill. The M’s are averaging only 2.3 runs over his last three starts.

O's and Nats continue to surprise

There are all kinds of happenings currently going on in baseball to give everyone a thrill such as Bryce Harper stealing home, Albert Pujols finally hitting his first home run of the season and the Dodgers playing with passion, but the top story through the first month of baseball has to be the party going on in our nation’s capital of Washington D.C.

Both the Nationals and Orioles are in first place!

D.C. hasn’t had a lot to be excited about from their sports team over the last decade other than their hockey team. It’s a great sports town, but they haven’t had much to cheer about. The Redskins have been mediocre, the basketball team has been at the bottom of the standings forever and their baseball parks have only been filled when the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies come to town.

But following Sunday’s action, Baltimore and Washington are both in first place and it has the area focusing once again on baseball. The Orioles (19-9) last won the American League East in 1997 and have only finished better than fourth once, a third-place finish in 2004. They’ve finished dead last in their division for the last four seasons.

For the Nationals (18-10), they had their best season last year finishing third, one game under .500, but had finished last in five of the six seasons prior since the franchise moved from Montreal. If we throw in the Senators record before they became the Twins, the last time DC finished first was in 1933, and the only time they ever won a World Series was in 1924.

Now granted, it’s still early and the combination of the Orioles starting pitching and the Nationals 24th ranked hitting (.238) could do them in rather quickly, but this is exactly what is so great about baseball. It’s about the possibilities and hopes of all the fans and players believing that something good could happen from a place filled with long lost memories.

The Orioles silenced many of their critics by winning five of their last six games, and doing so in New York and Boston, the so-called “Deans of the AL East.” The theme coming into last week was ’we’ll see what the O’s are made of this week’ and they then proceeded to play inspired ball in the most intimidating parks of baseball. The Boston series was perfect microcosm of the shifting of powers within the division with the Red Sox failing in two extra inning games at home and the upstart O‘s taking it to them with inspired play.

The Nationals made a statement in a similar way slaying their nemesis, the Phillies, from their short existence and doing so using the Phillies model of success. The Nationals aren’t going to score very many runs. They currently have only posted 96 runs on the season, the fourth least in baseball, but it’s the pitching that carries them daily. The Nats pitching staff has the best ERA (2.59) in baseball, almost a half a run better than the NL’s second best in St. Louis. Their current dominance nightly on the mound almost has the feel of the Phillies squad from the last few seasons.

The Orioles currently lead the AL in ERA (2.78) which comes as a major surprise and is the reason where they’re at right now. Their starters could use a boost from Zach Britton when he comes back, but it’s been the bullpen that has been igniting wins and shutting down their opponents. Baltimore’s bullpen has the lowest ERA (1.41) in all of baseball with an 8-2 mark and has allowed only four home runs, which is the best in the AL.

Again, it’s only May and it might be too premature to talk about a DC area World Series, but the thought of it alone is exciting. Nothing against the Yankees, Rangers, Red Sox and Phillies, but a DC World Series would be huge for the game and also give hope to all of the teams around the league that can’t seem to penetrate the evil empire’s death star.

Harper Legend Grows

As if being on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a high school player, being the number one overall draft pick and having one of the quickest bats speeds ever wasn’t enough to fuel the legendary status of rookie Bryce Harper, the kid pulls out his best Ty Cobb-Jackie Robinson impression and steals home. It didn’t matter that the Nationals eventually lost Sunday night to the Phillies because the entire baseball world got to see what a gamer Harper is. His baseball instincts and knowledge of the game seem to be just a little bit higher than most veterans. He plays the game with a cocky confidence and arrogance in a good way that reminds some of the way Pete Rose played.

The play came after getting hit by a pitch from Cole Hamels, who was sending the kid a message about respect or ‘know your place rookie’ or something like that, it was pretty obvious. After going first to third on a Jayson Werth single, Harper was watching the motion of Hamels throwing to first in an attempt to keep Werth closer with two outs. On Hamel’s next deliberate toss to first, Harper was gone and beat the throw home. It was a heads-up play contrived on his own and a play we rarely see in baseball. It’s definitely the stuff legends are made of.

The Best Prices to Bet

The most profitable line this season out of all baseball games played has been playing any game at plus-115 no matter who or where it is. Sides at +115 have gone 22-16 for a return of +930, including 12-4 at home at +980.

The minus-120 favorite has gone 27-14 this season with a profit of +1020 by simply being laying the number whether it’s a home or away team, although the home side is a little better alone at +560.

If you took all road teams at +145 and +160, you’d be up +1580 at a 15-6 record.

The point of all this is to take a shot with a few underdogs in the higher price range while also valuing the small favorites a bit more. Of course, this stuff all cycles around and we’ll likely be looking at an entirely new landscape next month. However, taking plus-money and laying low prices at the best numbers is how the professional bettors stay in business during the summer. .

MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes
Sportspic.com

Miami at Houston

The Miami Marlins turning things around put a seven game win streak on the line when they take on Stros at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday. Marlins pinning their hopes on Anibal Sanchez (2-0, 2.43 ERA, 4-1 TSR) have got the right arm on the mound to maintain the streak. The righty impressive in all of his starts allowing 2 or less runs in 4-of-5 of his trips to the mound is 3-1 in six life-time vs Stros (4-2 TSR). Stick with Marlins as they're on a 4-0 road streak as a favorite of -$1.10 to -$1.50 with Sanchez, 7-1 last eight meetings with Houston.

Toronto Blue Jays at Oakland A's

Jays off back-2-back losses have conditions on their side to right the ship when they send Ricky Romero (4-0, 3.64 ERA, 5-1 TSR) to the mound. The left-hander off a shaky start allowing five runs but a win none the less can't be discounted in this spot. The hurler has lead Jays to a smart 5-1 stretch following a sub-par performance (=>4 runs) the previous start. Romero is 4-0 with a miniscule 1.49 ERA vs A's in five life-time starts (4-1 TSR) and Jays are on a sparkling 6-1 stretch off a loss handing the ball to Romero the next game.

Rays aim to halt skid
Sportspic.com

The Tampa Bay Rays head to New York this Tuesday night for the first of a three-game set with the Yankees in this American League East clash. Rays looking to end a two game slide should feel pretty good about their chances. Despite the recent losses the Rays remain a healthy 12-3 last fifteen on the diamond. Rays also swept the earlier series this year and have now won seven consecutive vs Yankees. Finally, Rays pin their hopes on James Shields (5-0, 3.05 ERA, 6-0 TSR) who is undefeated on the season. That said, Rays might also be a little anxious. Earlier this year the right-hander didn't fare too well against the Yankees as he gave up six earned runs over five innings of work getting tagged with a ND in a game Rays eventually won 7-6. Shields heads to the hill 5-11 with a 4.39 ERA vs New York over 21 career starts with Rays 7-14 over the span. If that were not enough to make a team a little jittery consider that all but one of Rays' mentioned victories were all at Tropicana Field and that Rays are 2-8 last ten trips into New York, on a 0-4 slide at Yankee Stadium with Shields. The Yankees plan on countering with Ivan Nova (3-1, 5.58 ERA, 4-1 TSR). The hurler's undefeated string came to an end in his last start as the O's got him for five runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. Still, the righty should boost Yankee confidence as he enters a perfect 2-0 vs Tampa with New York a perfect 4-0 over his four life-time starts. Betting market has Yankees -$1.20 favorite with the total set at 9.

Tuesday's MLB Tip Sheet
By Brian Edwards
VegasInsider.com

Braves at Cubs

Jeff Samardzija pitched seven strong innings and improved to 4-1 for the season in the Cubs’ 5-1 win Monday vs. Atlanta. Bryan LaHair, who is now batting .388, cracked his eighth homer of the year off of Tommy Hanson to tie the game in the fourth. Two pitches later, Ian Stewart cranked his third homer of the season. Geovany Soto added some insurance in the eighth with a two-run blast. Chipper Jones went 2-for-4 in the losing effort.

Atlanta (18-12, +386) swept a weekend series at Colorado before arriving in the Windy City for Monday’s series opener against the Cubs. The Braves broke out the brooms and won a 7-2 decision Sunday afternoon as a minus-114 favorite. Brandon Beachy worked six-plus innings to earn his third win. Freddie Freeman hit a triple and a homer for three RBIs, while Dan Uggla popped his fourth dinger of the season.

Chicago (12-17, -180) took a 7-9 home record into Monday’s series opener at Wrigley Field. The Cubs took two of three from the Dodgers at home over the weekend, including Sunday’s 4-3 win as an even-money underdog. Chicago’s bullpen worked five scoreless innings and David DeJesus walked with the bases loaded in the 11th to plate the winning run.

Chicago will turn to Ryan Dempster (0-1, 0.95 ERA) in this spot. The veteran right-hander has been extremely sharp all year long, yet the Cubs are winless in his four assignments. Dempster, who has the best ERA in the majors, has received merely seven combined runs of support. The ‘under’ is 3-0-1 in his four outings.

Dempster hasn’t won since Aug. 11 of last year, covering a span of 13 starts. He threw eight scoreless innings his last time out but took a no-decision nonetheless.

Randall Delgado (2-3, 5.14) is coming off his best and longest outing of the season, albeit in a losing effort. Delgado worked eight innings and gave up just two runs in a 4-0 loss vs. the Phillies. The righty didn’t issue any free passes and struck out five. The ‘over’ is 3-2 in his five starts.

Atlanta is in second place in the National League East, one game back of the loop-leading Nationals. Meanwhile, the Cubs and Brewers are sharing the cellar of the NL Central, facing a six-game deficit to division-leading St. Louis.

The ‘over’ is 16-12-2 overall for the Braves, 10-6-1 in their road games.

The Cubs have watched the ‘under’ go 16-12 overall, 10-7 in their home outings.

Most betting shops have installed Chicago as a minus-115 ‘chalk.’ There was not an overnight total due to uncertain wind conditions.

WGN will have the telecast at 8:05 p.m. Eastern.

Blue Jays at A’s

Most books are listing Toronto (16-13, +81) as a minus-125 favorite with a total of 6 ½ ‘over’ (minus-120). Gamblers can take the Blue Jays on the run line for a plus-135 payout (risk $100 to win $135).

Oakland (15-14, +475) returns home from a nine-game road trip to host the Blue Jays in the opener of this brief, two-game set. The A’s went 5-4 on the trek thanks to taking two of three from the Rays in St. Pete. They won by a 9-5 count Sunday as generous plus-155 underdogs. Brandon Inge smacked a three-run homer, hit a sac-fly and scored a pair of runs in the victory.

Toronto is in third place in the AL East, three games back of the division’s co-leaders, Baltimore and Tampa Bay. The Jays had won six of their last seven games until losing back-to-back contests at Los Angeles against the Angels on Saturday and Sunday.

Oakland’s Brandon McCarthy (2-3, 2.96) has made seven starts with his team going 3-4. The ‘under’ is 5-2 in those seven contests.

Toronto’s Ricky Romero (4-0, 3.64) will toe the rubber in this spot. He’s reached the eighth inning in three of his five starts. The southpaw has seen the ‘over’ go 4-1 in his five assignments.

Oakland is 6-4 against lefties. The A’s own a 6-7 record at home this year. They have seen the ‘under’ go 18-10 overall.

Toronto is 8-6 on the road, 10-9 against right-handers. The Blue Jays have seen the ‘over’ go 15-13 overall.

The first pitch is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. Eastern.

B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets

Baltimore has the best money total in MLB (+1,342), earning its backers 13.42 units of profit.

Worst money team in baseball? That’s the 7-21 Twins (-1,078).

The ‘over’ is an MLB-best 21-8 overall for Houston.

The ‘under’ is an AL-best 20-10 overall for the Angels.

Pittsburgh has seen the ‘under’ go 19-7 overall, tops in the NL.

The biggest underdog on Tuesday’s card is Seattle, which is plus-185 at home vs. Detroit and RHP Justin Verlander. The M’s will give the starting nod to veteran RHP Kevin Millwood.

San Francisco is 5-2 against left-hander. The Giants will face the Dodgers’ southpaw Clayton Kershaw tonight.
