Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (8-5, 2.82 ERA)

King Felix has returned to the Felix of old. The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner threw eight innings of one-run ball, scattering eight hits to pick up his eighth win of the season against the Royals on Thursday. Even more impressive was his complete-game shutout over the high-powered Texas Rangers in his previous start on July 14. The 26-year-old should be up to an even tougher test Tuesday against the visiting Bronx Bombers.

Edinson Volquez, San Diego Padres (6-7, 3.34 ERA)

The Padres are finally starting to reap the benefits of the offseason trade that saw former staff ace Mat Latos back his bags for Cincinnati. Volquez, who was the key piece coming back to San Diego in the deal, has been rock solid in his last five starts.

Volquez threw a one-hit shutout against the lowly Astros on Thursday to notch his sixth win of the season and lower his ERA to 1.71 in July. There may be some value for his next road start in San Francisco on Tuesday.

SLUMPING

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (12-5, 3.32 ERA)

Gonzalez hasn’t looked anything like an All-Star over his last five starts. The southpaw surrendered six earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched Thursday against the Mets, ballooning his ERA to 5.75 in July.

To make matters worse, the struggling lefty may not get much run support Tuesday in New York. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is a perfect 6-0 at home and is seeking his league-leading 14th win of the campaign.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians (8-9, 5.24 ERA)

The Indians believed they hit the jackpot last July when they acquired Jimenez from the Colorado Rockies. The 28-year-old is rarely clocked at over 95 mph on the radar gun these days, a major decline from the fireballer who regularly registered triple digits earlier in his career.

Jimenez not only leads the AL in walks, but boasts an ugly 7.48 ERA in July. The righty has surrendered 18 earned runs in just four starts this month. Batters are taking advantage of his control issues, swatting five homers during that span. Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera will be licking their lips when the Tigers roll into town Tuesday.

Oakland Athletics vs Toronto Blue Jays

Sweeping a four game series vs. A.L. East leading Yankees the Oakland Athletics put they're sparkling 14-2 July record (+$1448) on the line when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game set. Oakland plating 4.06 runs/game during the streak including a whopping 6.75 when on the road pin their hope on Travis Blackey (2-2, 3.36 ERA) in the opener, A.J. Griffin (2-0, 2.70 ERA) in the second and Tommy Milone (9-6, 3.34 ERA) in the finale. Jays off a three game sweep in Beantown scoring 9.3 runs/game counter with lefty Brett Cecil (2-2, 6.34 ERA) on Tuesday followed by southpaw Ricky Romero (8-6, 5.22 ERA) and port-side hurler Aaron Laffey (2-1, 2.77 ERA) to close the series. This looks like a great spot for the Toronto to ambush Oakland in a least two of the three games as Jays send three lefties to the mound. Although Oakland has won their last three vs a southpaw starter A's remain on a 6-13 skid vs a left-handed starter including 3-7 on the road crossing 4.5 runs/game. Keep in mind Jays have had their way with A's north of the border winning 12-of-17 encounters and have a solid 28-15 stretch at home vs the A.L. West opponents.

Rays - Orioles Series Preview
Sportspic.com

Tuesday, 7:05 PM ET – Jeremy Hellickson (4-6, 3.55) vs. Wei-Yin Chen (8-5, 3.80)

Hellickson hasn’t won in nine starts and it has been a combination of poor fortune in terms of getting run support from his teammates, and command issues as he has had problems with walks lately. In 2012, Hellickson is 0-1 in two starts against the Orioles despite an ERA of 2.70, and his no-decision came in Baltimore, although he did give up two homers. Chen won for the first time in six starts in his last outing and inconsistency is to be expected of him in his first year in the majors. He lost his first start against the Rays, allowing five runs in 5.2 innings, but that was in Tampa Bay.

Chen has a solid 3.32 ERA at home as opposed to 4.27 on the road, while Hellickson’s ERA is 4.08 ERA and 3.25 at home. That means in Baltimore, the edge has to go to the home team unless Tampa Bay’s offense gives Hellickson some help. Pick: Baltimore Orioles

Wednesday, 7:05 PM ET – David Price (13-4, 2.64) vs. Miguel Gonzalez (1-1, 2.59)

Price is now 5-0 in his last six starts, giving up nine earned runs over that time and he has to be in the running for the Cy Young award, along with Los Angeles’ Jered Weaver and that is bad news for the Orioles. The 26-year-old lefty tossed 7.1 scoreless innings against the Orioles in his first start against them, taking his record to 5-2 in 10 starts with a 2.58 ERA and Price is 2-0 in five trips to Baltimore with a 2.81 ERA. Gonzalez is making his sixth career appearance and only third start after taking a loss in Detroit, so this is definitely the first time that he has seen the Rays and it could be a little overwhelming to go up against one of the premier pitchers in the game.

Price knows that he has to be on top of his stuff if the Rays are going to stay in the running for a postseason spot and he has been pitching like the ace everyone thought he would be four or five years ago. It’s a big ask of an inexperienced player to keep his team in the game when you’re up against a pitcher like Price on the other side. Take the Rays in the second game of the series. Pick: Tampa Bay Rays

Thursday, 12:35 PM ET – James Shields (8-6, 4.44) vs. Chris Tillman (1-1, 1.00)

It’s hard to know whether or not Shields is being affected by trade rumors as the Rays have to decide soon if they’re going to keep him. However, he isn’t making it easy with a string of subpar efforts and now Shields has given up four runs or more in five straight starts (in addition to four consecutive starts of allowing double-digit hits), which could scare off some suitors. Despite not pitching that well against the Orioles earlier this season, Shields took a win and is now 9-5 in 22 starts against them with a 3.54 ERA and in Baltimore, he is 6-1 in 11 starts with a 3.63 ERA. Tillman is back in the majors and he was rocked for seven innings in less than an inning in Minnesota, and he is 0-2 in his five career starts against the Rays with an ERA of 5.06.

The Rays need to figure out what they’re doing with Shields before the trade deadline on July 31st because it can’t be helping him to hear that he is on the block and when Shields is on, he forms with Price to make a dangerous one-two punch at the top of the rotation. Tillman struggled with back spasms and even though he says that he is ready to go, it can’t be encouraging if you want to back the Orioles because he isn’t a great pitcher when he is 100% healthy. Take the visitors in this online betting matchup. Pick: Tampa Bay Rays
