Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (9-2, 3.31 ERA)

Burnett picked up his eighth straight victory last week by throwing 6 2/3 innings of three-run ball in a 5-4 win over Philadelphia. He struck out seven and also allowed only his third homer in the last seven games. The Pirates are averaging six runs in his last three trips to the hill.

Jon Niese, New York Mets (6-3, 3.55 ERA)

Niese is on a roll, having allowed only seven runs in his last five starts. He threw seven innings of one-run ball last week against the Cubs and went 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA in June. The lefty has struck out at least five batters in each of his last eight starts.

Slumping

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (7-5, 4.04 ERA)

Shields allowed a career-high 14 hits in his last outing, a 5-2 loss to Detroit. He managed to go 7 2/3 innings and ended up throwing 123 pitches, but clearly didn’t have his best stuff. Shields has just one win in his last eight starts, allowing at least four runs in five of those.

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (6-7, 4.53 ERA)

Haren may have won three of his last four, but he’s getting a lot of help from his bats. He has allowed 20 earned runs and six homers during that stretch. The righty gave up six earned runs in six innings last week at Toronto, but L.A. came away with a 9-7 victory.

Houston at Pittsburgh

Bucs ridding a 5-1 stretch have condition on their side to extend the run. Hot-Arm Burnett (9-2, 3.31 ERA) having a career year with Pittsburgh is heading to the mound. Recording his eight straight win last time out in Philadelphia, A.J. with a sparkling 12-5 team start record in July (NYY/TOR) is a good investment in this spot. The right-hander is a perfect 5-0 with a miniscule 1.11 ERA at PNC Park with Pirates a perfect 7-0 in his seven home town starts. On the other bump, Stros Harrell (7-6, 4.33 ERA) has been a much better investment at Minute Maid Park (5-1, 1.99 ERA, 5-2 TSR) than on the road (2-5, 6.36 ERA, 2-7 TSR). Stay home with Bucs.

San Francisco at Washington

N.L. West leading San Francisco at 45-35 (+$867) take on N.L. East leading Washington (45-32, +$1068) at Nationals Park. Giants a break-even 19-19 (+$132) on the road platting 4.6 runs/game pin their hopes on Tim Lincecum (3-8, 5.60 ERA). Lincecum tossing seven shutout innings last time out won for the first time in eleven attempts (1-6, 2-9 TSR). San Francisco 4-12 in Lincecum's 16 starts hope the right-hander builds off his best start of the season as Giants are on a 1-3 skid vs Washington with the hurler. Meanwhile, Nationals 20-14 (+$316) at home scoring 3.6 runs/game counter with Jordan Zimmermann (4-6, 2.77 ERA). The right-hander picked up his first win in a over a month last start going another strong 7 innings of 8 hit 1 run ball. What is even more promising for Washington, Zimmerman posting five quality starts in June surrendering 3 or less runs in each has now given up 3 or less in all but three of his fifteen starts (8-7 TSR). Play Nats w/Zimmermann as they move to 8-2 vs the N.L. West, 3-0 vs Giants with the hurler and San Francisco falls to 2-7 on the road with Lincecum.
