Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Mat Latos, Cincinnati Reds (10-3, 3.81 ERA)

Latos had another solid start against the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon, but was dealt a no decision after the bullpen blew a 2-1 lead. The righty went seven strong innings, allowing one earned run while striking out eight. He’s now 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA in his last four outings. His next start is at home versus the Mets.

Doug Fister, Detroit Tigers (6-7, 3.48 ERA)

Fister had another quality start Thursday, holding the Yankees to two runs through 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander has been incredible since the All-Star break, going 4-1 with a 1.79 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 41:6 K:BB ratio in six starts. He takes the mound on the road against the Twins next time out.

SLUMPING

Zack Greinke, Los Angeles Angels (0-1, 5.68 ERA)

Greinke has struggled in his three starts since joining the Angels, surrendering 12 earned runs over 19 innings. The former Brewer has most recently suffered defeats on the road in Oakland and Chicago. The righty goes for his first win since June 27 against the Indians in his next start.

Josh Beckett, Boston Red Sox (5-9, 4.97 ERA)

Beckett was pounded by Texas for eight runs in his last start Wednesday, but Red Sox management has decided to keep him in the rotation to start against Baltimore. The right-hander was pulled in his previous start against Detroit because of back spasms.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates eleven game home stand vs the N.L. West has not gone as planned. Defeated 5-4 in Game-One of this four game series with Dodgers the Bucs are now 3-5 costing backers -$434 at the betting window. Bucs find themselves dogs in game-two hooking Kevin Correia (9-6, 4.49 ERA) against Chad Billingsley (8-9, 3.84 ERA). Both hurlers are on solid runs. Correia is on a 6-0 stretch surrendering 25 runs, 37 hits, striking out 23, walking 11 over 34 innings which translates to a 2.09 SWR, 1.41 WHIP, 6.62 AvgRunsAllw/9 and 12.83 Batter-Out-Rating/9. Billingsley is on a 4-0 spurt giving up 22 hits, 6 runs over 26.2 innings with 19 K 5 BB for a 4.40 SWR, 1.03 WHIP, 2.06 ARA, 18.40 BOR. Consider laying the small number on Dodgers (-$1.15) knowing road favorites with a pitcher like Billingsley who gets guys out (BOR/9 > 15) win at a 66.8% clip (207-103) while home dogs with a pitcher like Correia who has trouble getting guys out (BOR/9 <15) are at the losing end 70.5% of the time (82-196). Keep in mind, Dodgers are on a 4-1 stretch vs Pirates w/Billingsley, Correia's teams (Pit/SD) are on a 1-4 slide vs Dodgers.

What Bettors Need to Know: Nationals at Giants
By Covers.com

Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants (-119, 6.5)

After Monday’s expected pitchers' duel failed to materialize, the Washington Nationals and San Francisco Giants will try again Tuesday at AT&T Park. Washington routed the Giants 14-2 in the series opener, with Ryan Vogelsong’s National League-best 2.27 ERA climbing to 2.72 after he allowed eight runs in 2 2/3 innings. Jordan Zimmermann faces Madison Bumgarner on Tuesday as the Giants look to snap a four-game losing streak to the Nationals, who have outscored San Francisco 38-14 in that stretch. Washington has won 11 of its last 13 games and leads Atlanta by 5 1/2 games in the National League East.

San Francisco, which sits tied for first place in the NL West with the Dodgers, expects to have third baseman Pablo Sandoval (hamstring) in the starting lineup for the first time since July 24. First baseman Brett Pill was optioned to Triple-A Fresno to make room for Sandoval, who fouled out as a pinch hitter on Monday. Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth was scratched from Monday’s starting lineup with right ankle soreness and he’ll undergo a precautionary MRI exam on Tuesday morning. The Nationals are 9-0 in games Werth has started since coming back from the disabled list on Aug. 2.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (9-6, 2.35 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (12-7, 3.08)

Zimmermann matched a career high with 11 strikeouts and limited the Astros to three hits over six innings last Thursday. In six starts since the All-Star break, he is 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 35 innings. Zimmermann gave up two runs (one earned) over six innings when he faced the Giants on July 3, and he’s allowed one or zero earned runs in 14 of his 23 starts.

Bumgarner allowed three runs with seven strikeouts over six innings last Thursday against St. Louis, and he’s 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA in three career starts against Washington. He took the loss in his start against the Nationals on July 4, giving up seven runs in five innings. Bumgarner has tossed six straight quality starts while posting a 45-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

TRENDS

*Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the clubs.
*Nationals are 6-0 in Zimmermann’s last six starts.
*Giants are 0-4 in Bumgarner’s last four starts vs. National League East.
*Washington is 9-2 in its last 11 games as an underdog.

UMPIRE TRENDS- Jerry Lane

*Giants are 6-0 in their last six games with Layne behind home plate.
*Under is 7-0-1 in Laynes last eight games behind home plate vs. San Francisco.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals SS Ian Desmond completed a full workout at AT&T Park on Monday and could be nearing a rehab assignment. Desmond has been on the disabled list since July 22 with a left oblique strain.

2. The Giants are 12-16 against NL East teams this season, including 3-8 at AT&T Park.

3. The Nationals have won 12 of their last 13 road games, and they own the best road winning percentage in the majors at .656 (40-21).
