Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (16-4, 2.39)

Price has put together 11 consecutive quality starts, pitching at least seven innings in each of those outings. His last loss was June 13 versus the Mets and he’s only surrendered two earned runs in three August starts. The lefty takes the bump at home against the Royals on Tuesday.

Paul Maholm, Atlanta Braves (11-7, 3.39 ERA)

Maholm continued his recent success since joining the Braves, picking up the win against the Padres in his last outing. The right-hander has only allowed one earned run in his last 16 innings pitched but faces a tough test against Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals in Washington next time out.

SLUMPING

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (10-8, 4.16 ERA)

Bailey had another tough outing Thursday, allowing six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to the Mets. The righty has struggled in his last four starts, posting a 9.15 ERA in 19 1/3 innings with just one win. He starts on the road in Philadelphia next.

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (15-4, 3.54 ERA)

Burnett picked up the win against the Dodgers on Thursday despite allowing six runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander has been solid for the Bucs this season but he's been a little shaky recently, giving up 11 runs and 16 hits in his last 12 1/3 innings. He toes the rubber in San Diego at Petco Park in his next outing.

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals

Two N.L. East rivals continue their battle Tuesday night as Washington and Atlanta play the second of this three-game set at Nationals Park. Braves toppled 5-4 in the opener falling 6-games behind in the division try to gain ground handing the ball to Paul Maholm (11-7, 3.39 ERA). The lefty has made three starts since Braves acquired him from the Cubs and he's allowed just 4 runs striking out 19 batters over the span to post a 2-1 record with a miniscule 1.57 ERA. Maholm sporting a 1-5 mark vs Washington over 9 life-time starts (2-7 TSR) faces a tough test in this one. The Nationals are countering with Stephen Strasburg (14-5, 2.91 ERA). The hurler showing no signs of slowing down is on a three-game win streak putting up a 1.50 ERA, 0.94 WHIP fanning 16 over 18 innings of work. Strasburg has faced Braves four times this season posting a 2-1 mark (2-2 TSR) and heads to the mound 2-3 in his career vs Atlanta (2-4 TSR). Washington with the upper hand in the series winning 9-of-13 encounters including 4-of-7 hosting Atlanta have been pegged $1.60 to $1.70 favorite depending on locale.

What Bettors Need to Know: Yankees at White Sox
By Covers.com

New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox (-107, 9)

Not that they have much reason to panic, but the New York Yankees’ lead in the American League East has shrunk to four games - its lowest point since June 29. The Chicago White Sox, who handed the Yankees a loss on Monday, have only a two-game lead in the AL Central and have been playing pressure-packed baseball since the All-Star break while the Yankees have been in cruise control.

New York has won nine of its last 13 games but is trying to fight off a charge from the Tampa Bay Rays while giving their stars enough time to get healthy. Mark Teixeira returned from a three-game absence Monday and CC Sabathia could make his return to the rotation this weekend. The one consistent performer for the Yankees all season has been Derek Jeter, who is 7-for-9 in the last two games. The White Sox can slug it almost as well as New York and benefited from four home runs on Monday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Ivan Nova (11-6, 4.76 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Francisco Liriano (4-10, 5.22)

Nova has been off his game of late, posting a 1-2 record with an 8.49 ERA in his last four starts. The 25-year old right-hander issued four walks and was pounded for four runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a no decision against Texas last week. Nova was sharp against Chicago on June 28, surrendering one run in 7 1/3 innings, and owns a 2-0 record with a 1.33 ERA in four career starts vs. the White Sox. Adam Dunn, the major league home run leader with 36, is 0-for-7 in his career against Nova.

Liriano earned his first win since joining Chicago at Toronto last week when he held the Blue Jays to two runs on three hits while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings. The veteran left-hander has allowed two runs or less in three of his four turns for the White Sox.
