Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Samuel Deduno, Minnesota Twins (3-0, 2.48 ERA)

Deduno threw six scoreless innings at Boston on Thursday to record his third win of the campaign. The righty has had stellar results in each of his last three starts, going 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA. The only alarming stat is his 19:20 K:BB ratio in 29 innings this season. He takes the hill in Cleveland in his next start.

Mike Fiers, Milwaukee Brewers (5-4, 1.88 ERA)

Fiers struck out six and gave up two runs on eight hits over six innings to earn his fifth win of the season in Wednesday's win over Houston. Fiers has now gone eight consecutive starts while allowing two or fewer runs. He’s also averaging just over a strikeout per inning in 72 frames this campaign. He toes the rubber at home against the Reds in his next outing.

SLUMPING

Barry Zito, San Francisco Giants (8-8, 4.27 ERA)

Zito was torched by the Mets during Thursday afternoon's 9-1 blowout loss. He tossed just 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits. The veteran lefty has seen his ERA balloon to 4.27 from 3.75 in his last three starts. He hurls on the road at Busch Stadium against the streaking Cardinals next time out.

Zach Britton, Baltimore Orioles (1-1, 8.35 ERA)

Britton was lit up for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Yankees. The lefty has had one good start in four turns since being activated from the disabled list shortly after the All-Star break. Brian Matusz and Jake Arrieta are lurking in Triple-A, and could be recalled to take Britton's spot if he falters in his next start against the Mariners.

Minnesota at Cleveland

Cleveland Indians taken behind the woodshed spanked 14-3 by Twinkies last night have lost ten straight including four consecutive against Minnesota. Indians struggling vs division rivals (19-26) have a tough one on Tuesday. Twins are schedule to send Samuel Deduno to the mound. The right-hander off six scoreless innings at Boston is 3-0 with a miniscule 0.94 ERA last three starts. He'll be opposed by Corey Kluber who gave up six runs over 4 1/3 innings in the first Major League start this past Thursday in Kansas City.

Toronto at Tampa Bay

Rays reeling from back-2-back losses to the Orioles should feel pretty good about their chances when they open the series vs Toronto handing the ball to James Shields (9-7, 4.24 ERA). The right-hander just tossed his 17th career complete game last Tuesday at Oakland. If that were not enough to boost Tampa's confidence, Rays have won five consecutive games vs Jays with Shields and seven of his last eight vs Blue Birds. Rays 9-2 vs Toronto w/Shields at Tropicana Field, 8-1 at home with the hurler vs a team with a losing record stay home with Tampa,

San Francisco at St Louis

The St Louis Cardinals and Jake Westbrook manhandling Giants and Matt Cain last night won its seventh straight at home and 13 of it's of it's last 17 overall to quietly move up in the Wild Card standings. Cardinals platting 6.2 runs/game over the 13-4 stretch look to have a massive advantage when they play the second of this four game set hooking right-hander Lance Lynn (13-4, 3.40 ERA) against southpaw Bary Zito (8-8, 4.27 ERA). Lynn is undefeated in five allowing 2 runs or less in four of those starts is 6-2 with a smart 2.79 ERA at Busch Stadium this season. On the flip side, Zito torched last two on the mound giving up 11 runs over 9.2 innings of work heads into St Louis 1-6 with a 5.23 ERA life-time vs Cardinals. Cardinals on a sparkling 12-3 stretch vs a left-handed starter, a 6-1 streak vs the N.L. West have been pegged -$1.80 favorite with the total set a 8.5 runs.

What Bettors Need to Know: Giants at Cardinals
By Covers.com

San Francisco Giants at St. Louis Cardinals (-185, 8.5)

If the St. Louis Cardinals expect to keep pressure on the three teams in front of them in the National League Central and wild card standings, they must continue to win at home. The Cardinals will try to improve to 5-0 in a stretch of 16 of 19 games at Busch Stadium when they host the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday in the second of a four-game series. St. Louis, which has won seven straight and 16 of its last 19 games at home - including Monday's 8-2 victory - is 2 1/2 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates for the final NL wild card spot, three behind the Atlanta Braves for the top wild card and six back of the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central. The Cardinals have the highest batting average in baseball at home (.292).

The Giants maintained their one-half game lead in the National League West over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost to the Colorado Rockies 2-0 on Monday. Tuesday's game features two of the hottest hitters in baseball. San Francisco catcher Buster Posey is hitting .458 with seven homers and 27 RBIs since the All-Star break while St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday is batting .368 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in his last 20 games. St. Louis' Lance Lynn continues to impress in his first season as a full-time starter and will try for his 14th victory. He will oppose San Francisco's Barry Zito, who is 1-6 lifetime against the Cardinals.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Barry Zito (8-8, 4.27 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (13-4, 3.40)

Zito is 0-2 in his last three starts and has allowed 14 runs and 18 hits in 16 2/3 innings during that span. He has yielded 18 earned runs in 21 first innings this season (7.71 ERA), including four in his last outing, a 9-1 loss to the New York Mets. Zito's last victory came July 17, when he pitched seven shutout innings in a 9-0 win at Atlanta. The Cardinals' roster is hitting .311 against him, although Carlos Beltran and Holliday are a combined 15-for-69 (.217) with two homers and 11 RBIs.

Lynn has won his last three decisions covering five starts. He received a no-decision in his last outing, an 8-2 loss at Colorado on Thursday when he allowed two runs, seven hits, walked four and struck out four in six innings. Lynn yielded six runs and earned a 9-6 victory at Chicago on July 27, but in his previous three starts, he allowed one run in 19 innings. Lynn yielded five runs and lost to the Giants 12-7 in his major league debut June 2, 2011. Hunter Pence is 2-for-3 against Lynn.

*Giants are 0-5 in their last five games vs. a team with a winning record.
*Over is 4-0-1 in San Francisco's last five games.
*Over is 6-1 in St. Louis' last seven games vs. a left-handed starter.

UMPIRE TRENDS: Jordan Baker

Under is 6-0-1 in Bakers last seven games behind home plate.
Home team is 5-2 in Bakers last seven games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS

1. Beltran leads the NL with 78 RBIs while San Francisco's Melky Cabrera paces the NL in runs scored with 77.

2. Posey and the Cardinals' Yadier Molina both extended their hitting streaks to 10 games Monday.

3. The Giants have scored 56 runs in their last 12 games, 21 while going 1-8 and 35 in their three-game sweep over the weekend at Colorado.
