Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics (6-0, 1.94)

Griffin improved to 6-0 on the season after tossing eight shutout innings against the Angels on Wednesday. The rookie has only allowed five homers over 65 innings of work and has picked up wins in each of his last three starts. He toes the rubber against the Tigers next.

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (15-8, 3.72)

Gallardo only surrendered two runs over seven innings to pick up the win over the Braves in his last start. The righty has won seven consecutive decisions and eight of his last past nine outings have been quality starts. He looks to keep it going against the struggling Pirates next time out.

SLUMPING

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-14, 5.87)

Romero allowed eight hits and three runs in four-plus innings before getting the hook against the Mariners last time out. The lefty dropped his 13th straight decision, tying him with Tom Underwood for the franchise record. Things won’t get easier for Romero as he draws the Yankees on Tuesday.

A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (15-7, 3.66)

Burnett gave up two runs over six innings in a loss to the Reds last week. The right-hander hasn’t won since Aug. 16, a span of five starts. He takes the bump against the red-hot Brewers in his next outing.

LA Dodgers at Washington Nationals

Nationals hitting a rough spot over the weekend getting swept in Atlanta try to right the ship when they host Dodgers in a three game set at Nationals Park. Despite Nationals being a Major League best 89-57 (+$2289) overall and a strong 44-27 (+$768) at home the club will be feeling a bit anxious. Dodgers have been a pain in Nats' side this season winning all three meetings and enter the contest having won seven of the past eight encounters. But, Nationals have caught a break. Dodgers are opening the set pitting struggling Aaron Harang (9-9, 3.79 ERA) against Jordan Zimmermann (10-8, 30.01 ERA). Harang hasn't made it through six innings since the middle of August posting an 0-2 record with Dodgers 0-4 over the four game span. With L.A. on a 2-7 skid last nine w/Harang look for Nationals to move to 4-1 opening a series w/Zimmermann, 7-1 at home off a loss handing the ball to the hurler. If that were not enough, Harang heads to the hill on a 0-6 September road team start skid.

Oakland A's at Detroit Tigers

Those amazing Oakland Athletics currently holding one of the two wildcard spots in the AL and 3.0 games in back of Texas in the AL West Division race hit the road for a 10-game swing starting with three in Detroit. Surging A's ridding an 8-2 stretch having swept Mariners, taken 3-of-4 vs Halos and most recently taking 2-of-3 vs O's have got to like their chances opening the series with A.J. Griffin (6-0, 1.94 ERA) taking the ball. The hurler blanking Angels over 8 innings in his previous start is on a 3-0 streak with a miniscule 0.89 ERA to remain undefeated in eleven starts with A's 9-2 over the span. But, Detroit won't be easy pickens'. Tigers in a battle for AL Central bragging rights three games back of White Sox are on a solid 9-3 stretch at Comerica Park and scheduled to send Max Scherzer (16-6, 3.77 ERA) to the mound. The right-hander is arguably the hottest pitcher in the AL these days with a 10-1 record, 2.53 ERA over 14 starts (11-3 TSR). Stick with Detroit to draw first blood in this series as Tigers are on a smart 9-3 stretch at home w/Scherzer and already 1-0 this season vs A's with the hurler.

Hot and cold pitchers for Tuesday
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Hot

Yovani Gallardo (-125), Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates: Part of the reason the Brewers are on a 20-6 tear over the last month is because of Gallardo’s excellence. But his streak started much earlier. Milwaukee has won his past nine starts, and he faces a Bucs squad the Brewers have beaten three times in a row with him on the mound.

Homer Bailey (-150), Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs: Bailey has just one win in his last six starts, a 2-1 victory over the Pirates when he went seven strong innings. But dating back to last season, the Reds have won Bailey’s past five starts against the Cubs. Three of those wins came this season.

Eric Stults (+140), San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks: The Padres have won Stults’ past four starts and six of his last seven. Over the four-game stretch, he’s allowed only four total earned runs, and the Padres bats have come to life. The combined score during his last four starts is Padres 30, opponents 8. He beat the D’Backs, 5-0, on Aug. 24, going seven shutout innings.

Ian Kennedy (-150), Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Padres: Arizona has won its last three games behind Kennedy, including 2-0 and 1-0 victories over the L.A. Dodgers. However, he’s struggled vs. the Padres this season, losing his last two starts against them. They’ve beaten him up pretty good, too, getting 10 runs off him between the two starts.

A.J. Griffin (+135), Oakland A’s at Detroit Tigers: Griffin has been sizzling hot during his past three starts, allowing only two runs combined and getting the decision in each. He’s had pinpoint control, with only one walk over his last four starts. The A’s have won eight of his last nine starts.

Ryan Dempster (+130), Texas Rangers at L.A. Angels: He has been everything the Rangers had hoped when trading for him – and more. He’s won his past five starts and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of the games. His only outing against the Angels was his first game after being traded, and they rocked him for eight runs, but the Rangers eventually won the game, 15-9.

Cold

A.J. Burnett (+115), Pirates vs. Brewers: When it rains it pours, and the losses have been pouring in on Burnett. The Bucs have lost five-straight behind Burnett. Prior to that losing streak, they won 17 of his previous 19 starts. The losing streak sounds worse than it is, however, as it’s more about the Pirates not hitting the ball. In three of the four losses, they lost by one run, and Burnett allowed three runs or less.

Aaron Harang (+130), Dodgers at Washington Nationals: The Dodgers have lost his past four starts and seven of his last nine. However, he’s only allowed 11 runs combined over the four games, and three of the losses were one-run games.

Nathan Eovaldi (+125), Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves: Eovaldi has taken the loss in his past four starts and has been roughed up right out of the gate in all of them. He’s gone five innings or less in three of the starts. In his one start against the Braves this season (Aug. 2), he lasted only two innings and gave up six runs in a 6-1 loss.

Justin Germano (+140), Cubs vs. Reds: He’s taken the loss in his past five starts. In the first four games of that streak, he was awful, allowing five runs or more. But in his last start, at Houston, he pitched his best game of the year, giving up one unearned run but taking the 1-0 loss.

Fernando Abad (+260), Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals: He’s lost his first four starts in the majors and hasn’t made it out of the fifth inning in any of them.

Ricky Romero (+210), Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees: He’s taken the loss in his past six starts. He’s been hit hard and has given up 20 walks over that span, but surprisingly, has served up only three home runs.

P.J. Walters (+130), Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians: He’s lost his past three starts, one of those coming before he went on the 60-day disabled list, and the other two coming in the past 13 days. In his last two starts, he’s given up six runs in each and hasn’t made it past the fifth.
