Tuesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

STREAKING

Medlen is 8-0 with a 0.76 ERA in his 10 starts this season. He was named NL Pitcher of the Month in August and is 4-0 with a 0.90 ERA in four September starts. He takes the mound against the Marlins next.

Zack Greinke, Los Angeles Angels (14-5, 3.47)

Greinke held the Rangers to one run over eight innings Thursday, but didn't factor into the decision. The righty has a 1.48 ERA in four September starts and hasn’t been tabbed with a loss since August 19. He toes the rubber against the Mariners in his next start.

SLUMPING

Tyler Skaggs, Arizona Diamondbacks (1-3, 5.83)

Skaggs was touched up for four runs over five innings against the Padres in his last start. The 21-year-old hurler has surrendered nine runs over his last nine innings and looks to bounce back against the Giants Tuesday.

Aaron Laffey, Toronto Blue Jays (3-6, 4.80)

Laffey allowed four runs over three innings to the Yankees in his previous start. The lefty hasn’t won since August 5 - a span of eight starts. He looks to play spoiler against the Orioles next.

Miami Marlins at Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves winners 7 of 9 and 14 of their past 20 on the diamond can clinch a postseason spot during a six-game home-stand that opens Tuesday with three game sets against Marlins and Mets. Atlanta's magic number being two, they should feel pretty good about chances as Braves are a combined 9-3 at home this season vs Marlins/Mets. Expect Braves to inch closer to securing an NL wild-card spot when they open the first set with Kris Medlen on the mound. The Braves have won each of his ten starts since being inserted into the rotation and 23 of the hurlers 24 starts dating back to the 2010 campaign including a perfect 4-0 tossing against Marlins.

Tuesday’s Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Kris Medlin (-270), Atlanta Braves vs. Miami Marlins: Since Medlin was added to the starting rotation on July 31, the Braves have gone 10-0 behind him, with Medlin picking up the win in eight of the starts. He’s only allowed six runs combined over that stretch. No one in baseball is hotter or more effective than Medlin is right now. Over that stretch, he’s beaten the Marlins twice, allowing one run over 13 innings. With the way he’s pitching, it would be hard to understand how anyone else would start the one-game Wild Card playoff for the Braves next week.

Cole Hamels (-140), Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals: The Phils have won three straight behind Hamels and seven of his last eight starts. Hamels hasn’t given up more than three runs in any of his past 10 starts. He‘s 2-1 against the Nationals this season, but got the loss in his most recent start against them (3-0 on Aug. 2) to today’s pitcher, Ross Detwiler.

Tim Lincecum (-155), San Francisco Giants vs. Arizona Diamondbacks: The Giants have won his past four starts and five of last six. His last start, eight days ago, may have been his best, as he went 6 ½ shutout innings in a 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. He’s in his best form of the season — and at the perfect time with the postseason approaching. However, the D’Backs do have his number; he’s lost his past five starts against them dating back to 2011.

David Price (-165), Tampa Rays at Boston Red Sox: He’s got two starts left in the season, which could get him to 20 wins, and if that happens, a compelling argument can be made for Price as this year’s Cy Young Award winner. The Rays have won his past three starts and have beaten the Red Sox the last two times behind Price.

Tom Milone (+180), Oakland A’s at Texas Rangers: The A’s are reeling right now, having lost six of their past eight games, and still have six more games against the Rangers this season. They need Milone to pitch better than ever tonight and fend off the Wild Card chase the Angels are making. The A’s have won Milone’s past three starts and six of his last seven. The bad news is that Milone has lost both his starts at Texas this season.

Yu Darvish (-200), Rangers vs. A’s: After being highly-publicized in all his April starts, and then fading through the summer, Darvish’s recent hot stretch has kind of been under the radar. The Rangers have won his past five starts, with Darvish getting four of the wins. He’s been dominant in all five, allowing one run or less and eight strikeouts or more in four of them. He’s lost his past two starts against the A’s, but that was during his sluggish summer run.

Philip Hughes (-200), New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins: He’s won his past three starts and four of his last five. He’s beaten the Twins in his past two starts against them, the last being April 19.

Cold

Collin McHugh (+105), New York Mets vs. Pittsburgh Pirates: He will be making his fourth Major League start. His first three have resulted in Mets losses. The positive is that he has allowed only two earned runs in his two home starts for a 1.64 ERA.

Jorge De La Rosa (-130), Colorado Rockies vs. Chicago Cubs: After 16 months out of the game due to elbow surgery, and three rehab starts at Class-A Modesto, De La Rosa made his season debut Sept. 20 against the Giants and was pounded for six runs in 3 2/3 innings. There is not a lot of data to go off of, and it’s not quite a streak, but it is possible he was rushed back to the majors a little too quickly.

Tyler Skaggs (+145), Diamondbacks at Giants: The D’Backs have lost his past five starts, with Skaggs getting tagged for the loss in three of them. He’s given up 14 runs combined over his last three starts, including allowing five runs in a 6-2 loss to the Giants Sept. 14.
