Tuesday's Diamond Notes
By Joe Williams
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Cubs (7-0 past seven, 10-1 past 11)

The Cubs were slicing through the competition like a knife through hot butter early in the season, then they went in the tank in mid-June until the All-Star break and everyone in Wrigleyville started wringing their hands. However, the Cubs have re-gained their form and are unbeaten in the month of August. The Cubbies face Angels RHP Jered Weaver looking to improve on their 6-0 mark in the past six against an RHP starter. The Angels are just 2-7 in their past nine road games against a right-handed starter, and 3-7 in Weaver's past 10 road starts against a team with a winning record. The Cubs look like they'll keep sailing along.

Coldest team: Astros (1-6 past seven, 3-11 past 14)

The Astros have a bevy of young talent, but they have certainly hit the skids lately. After a 2-5 homestand, they were tripped up 3-1 at Target Field in the series opener Monday with Tyler Duffey spinning a gem. Now, they'll face Hector Santiago, a guy they certainly know from his time with the L.A. Angels. Santiago faced the Astros June 21, allowing just one earned run and three hits with four strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decsion at Minute Maid Park earlier this season. The Astros are 15-20 against left-handed pitching this season, and just 12-14 against the American League Central.

Hottest pitcher: Max Scherzer, Nationals (12-6, 2.87 ERA)

Scherzer started the season slow by his standards, but he has picked up the pace. Over the past 30 days Scherzer has posted a 2-0 record with a 2.17 ERA in four starts while posting a sparkling 0.79 WHIP, just four walks and 34 strikeouts over 29 innings. Scherzer hasn't faced the Indians this season, but he is 4-0 with a 3.46 ERA in eight starts against the Tribe since the start of the 2013 season. He saw the Cleveland Indians plenty in his days with the Detroit Tigers, and he'll look to keep it going Tuesday.

Coldest pitcher: Steven Matz, Mets (8-8, 3.63 ERA)

Overall, Matz's results do not appear to terrible. However, it has been a tale of two seasons for the youngster. At one point he had a 7-1 record and 2.36 ERA, but since the calendar turned over from May to June he has went into the tank. He is just 1-7 with a 4.81 ERA over his past 11 starts. Part of his issue lately has been a lack of run support, too. The Mets have scored three or fewer runs in eight of those 11 outings since June 7. Matz is also 4-6 with a 4.77 ERA in 14 starts at night with the opposition hitting .305 against him under the lights.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (8-1 past nine)

The Blue Jays held off the Rays 7-5 in Monday's series opener to snap an eight-game 'under' streak. In fact, all four home meetings against Tampa Bay have resulted in an 'over', with an average of 14.5 runs per game between the two sides. The 'under' is still 8-3 in Tampa Bay's past 11 against a team with a winning record, and 4-1 in their past five road games against a right-handed starter. For the Blue Jays, the 'under' is a perfect 7-0 in their past seven home games against a left-handed starter. The 'under' is also 9-2 in Marco Estrada's past 11 home starts, and 18-7-1 in his past 26 overall.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (6-1 past seven, 9-2-1 past 12)

The Diamondbacks hit the road where the 'over' is 5-2-1 in their past eight games. They get Zack Greinke back from injury, and it remains to be seen how deep he'll be able to go into the game coming off an injury. The 'under' is actually 5-1 in Greinke's past six starts, but this club was much different offensively and defensively since he last pitched. The 'over' is 6-1 in Arizona's past seven overall, and 4-1-1 in their past six road games againts a team with a winning home record. The 'over' is also 4-0 in New York's past four at Citi Field.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Tigers

It's a battle of southpaws in SoDo as the Mariners and Tigers do battle. Both teams have been red hot of late, too. The Tigers have rattled off wins in 10 of the past 13 to chip away at Cleveland's lead in the American League Central. They're also 9-2 in their past 11 against teams with a winning overall mark, 8-1 in their past nine against American League West opponents and 5-2 in their past seven road games against teams with a winning home record. The M's have won four straight, each of their past four home games and four of the past five starts by Wade LeBlanc. If you're looking for a difference between the sides, the M's are just 8-18 in their past 26 against left-handed starting pitchers.

Betcha didn’t know: Through 111 games, the Chicago White Sox and defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals have the exact same record at 53-58. Both teams have been ice cold, with the ChiSox going 3-8 in their past 11 overall and 10-25 in their past 35 road games. They have also managed to win just six of their past 28 road games against a right-handed starter. The Royals have won five of their past 16 games, and they're 0-8 in their past eight against southpaws. However, Edinson Volquez is on the bump and Kansas City has won 21 of his past 28 home outings. The White Sox are just 3-10 in their past 13 in Kansas City, and 16-35 in their past 51 meetings with the Royals.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-210) vs. Angels

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+115) at Rockies

Biggest line move: Astros (+105 to -105) at Twins

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago Cubs

The opener of a mini two game Interleague set between Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field should grab the attention of 'Over' Gamblers. Halos have been one of the better Interleague 'Over' plays from the Junior Circuit recording 11 'Over', 3 'Under' and 1 'Push'. Additionally, Halos have played 'Over' in 4 of its last 5 overall and in 5 of its last 7 on the road. Matching that, Halos have cashed 5 straight 'Over' opening a road series handing the ball to Jered Weaver. Finally, Sunday's 3-1 loss for LAA bodes well for 'Over' since, courtesy of Weaver Halos have a 7-1-1 'Over' stretch in his last 9 starts following a team loss the previous effort.

Note fo those keeping track of IL: Heading into Monday action 'Over' Gamblers are cashing at a 53.7% clip when American League clubs take on National League teams. The 'Over' has been the correct choice in 122 games vs 93 'Under', 12 'Push'.

In the Junior Circuit, the Detroit Tigers (13-4 O/U), Minnesota (12-2-1), Los Angeles Angels (11-3-1) lead the way. In the Senior Circuit it's Pittsburgh (13-4 O/U), Philadelphia (10-5-1), San Diego (11-3) cashing consistently for 'Over' gamblers.
