New York at Washington

The Washington Nationals and New York Mets get ready to duel again after the Mets cruised to a 7-1 victory Monday in the first of a three game set. Washington still leads the National League East with a 27-18 record, providing a slim ½-game cushion over New York.

Mets' send Matt Harvey to the bump trying to halt a two game skid including a 2 2/3 inning home loss to Washington last outing in which he was tagged for 9 runs (6 earned) bringing his record to 3-6 on the year with a 5.77 ERA.

Stephen Strasburg will start for Washington. Strasburg improved to 7-0 after allowing one run on six hits, one walk while striking out 10 over six innings in defeating Mets with Harvey last effort.

Having Stephen Strasburg do their bidding bodes well for Washington. Nationals have won Strasburg's last 13 starts overall, a franchise record and have won twenty of his last twenty-two trips to the mound. Additionally, Washington is 11-1 last twelve when Strasburg has pitched at home, 13-3 with Strasburg vs a division opponent. Finally, Nationals are 7-3 vs Mets handing the ball to their righthander.

Arizona at Pittsburgh

Things havent started well for Shelby Miller with his new club. The right-hander is 1-5 with a 6.64 ERA in nine trips to the mound for Diamondbacks. Looking back to his days with Atlanta, the hurler has managed just two wins in 34 starts for Arizona/Atlanta with the teams 7-27 over the span. Tonight, Miller tries to best Pirates who have won three straight in the series with lefty Francisco Liriano.

Tuesday's Diamond Notes
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Yankees (7-2 last nine)

New York started its West Coast trip with consecutive losses at Arizona. The Yankees avoided the sweep in Phoenix with a win in the finale, then followed that up with a four-game sweep at Oakland. In the final three victories over the A’s, the Yankees scored 18 runs as they pulled within one win of the .500 mark on the season. The Bronx Bombers have played well at Yankee Stadium recently by winning nine of their 13 home contests as the Blue Jays head to the Big Apple tonight.

Coldest team: Reds (0-8 last eight)

It’s been a tough stretch for Cincinnati of late as the Reds were swept by the Indians and Mariners in interleague action. The Reds hung with the Dodgers on Monday night, but were shut out by Clayton Kershaw, 1-0 as +325 underdogs to fall to 3-15 on the road this season. Since last August, the Reds have dropped seven straight meetings with the Dodgers, including four consecutive defeats at Chavez Ravine. Cincinnati has lost 13 of its past 15 games overall, while posting a 1-5 record in Game 2’s of a road series.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Tillman, Orioles (6-1, 2.61 ERA)

Both Stephen Strasburg and Chris Sale enter Tuesday’s action undefeated, but Tillman is riding a five-game winning streak. The Baltimore right-hander has compiled six consecutive quality starts, even though five of those outings came at Camden Yards. Tillman has struck out 38 batters in his past five trips to the mound, while scattering four hits in 6.1 innings of a 5-2 victory over the Mariners his last time out. The Orioles travel to Houston tonight as Tillman won at Minute Maid Park in his last appearance there in May 2014.

Coldest pitcher: Shelby Miller, Diamondbacks (1-5, 6.64 ERA)

No other pitcher in baseball has struggled from a win-loss standpoint over the last year more than Miller as his teams (Atlanta and Arizona) own a 6-27 record in his past 33 starts. The D-backs are 1-4 in Miller’s past five starts, as the right-hander has allowed 17 hits and six earned runs in his last two starts against the Yankees and Giants. Miller has put together only one quality start in nine trips to the mound this season, but Arizona has played well on the road recently by winning seven of the last nine games away from Chase Field.

Biggest UNDER run: Mariners (3-0 last three)

The current three-game ‘under’ streak for Seattle isn’t overwhelming, but the Mariners continue to struggle to score runs at home against the Athletics this season. Oakland swept Seattle at Safeco Field in early April as the Mariners were held to four runs in three losses. The A’s blanked the Mariners in Monday’s series opener in Seattle, 5-0, marking the fourth ‘under’ between these teams in four games at Safeco. Oakland’s Kendall Graveman takes the mound tonight as the A’s are 3-1 to the ‘under’ in his past four starts, including an ‘under’ at home against the Mariners earlier this month.

Biggest OVER run: Tigers (7-2-2 last 11)

Detroit’s offense has woken up of late by scoring 47 runs in the first seven games of its homestand. The Tigers plated five runs in Monday’s victory over the Phillies, as Detroit improved to 6-1-2 to the ‘over’ in the last nine contests at Comerica Park. Justin Verlander makes the start for the Tigers against the Phillies, as Detroit has eclipsed the ‘over’ in three of his five home outings that includes one push, while four of those games have seen a combined nine runs or more scored.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Cardinals

Chicago has suddenly lost three straight games after dropping back-to-back contests by one run apiece. The Cubs finished off its series at San Francisco with a 1-0 defeat to Madison Bumgarner and the Giants on Sunday, then squandered a 3-1 lead in a 4-3 walk-off loss to the rival Cardinals on Monday. St. Louis pulled even at home with a 13-13 record at Busch Stadium following Monday’s win, as Michael Wacha looks to get on track tonight. Wacha is winless in his last five starts, while allowing 16 runs in his past three trips to the mound in only 14 innings of work. Chicago looks to halt its longest losing streak of the season behind Jason Hammel, who yielded a season-high four earned runs in a 5-3 loss at Milwaukee in his last start.

Betcha didn’t know: The Royals have won each of Edinson Volquez’s last four starts against the Twins since April 2015, including a 4-3 home victory last month. Volquez has allowed two earned runs or less in each of those outings, as Kansas City has won seven straight meetings with Minnesota, including a 4-0 mark this season.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-250) vs. Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Cubs (+100) at Cardinals

Biggest line move: Angels (+115 to +105) at Rangers

Padres, Giants battle
By Sportsbook.ag

SAN DIEGO PADRES (19-27) at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (28-19)

Sportsbook.ag Line: San Diego +180, San Francisco -110, Total: 7.0

The Giants will be looking to win their fourth straight game and 12th in their past 13 when they host the Padres on Tuesday.

San Diego has been playing extremely poorly recently, losing seven of its past 10 and scoring three or less runs in six of its past 10 as well. San Francisco, meanwhile, has been as hot as could be and is coming off of a walk off victory over this Padres team on Monday night. The Giants are now 4-0 against the Padres in San Francisco this season and 17-6 over the past three seasons. They’re also 7-0 versus San Diego overall on the year.

One thing that does trend in the Padres’ favor is that they are 11-5 against the money line after three consecutive games versus a division rival this season. The Giants, meanwhile, are 37-15 against the money line in May games over the past two seasons.

The starters in this matchup are set to be RHP Andrew Cashner (2-3, 4.93 ERA, 28 K) for the Padres and RHP Jeff Samardzija (6-2, 2.66 ERA, 55 K) for the Giants.

The Padres are not playing well at the moment and they’ll be hoping that Andrew Cashner can help to end their struggles. The Padres’ starter has been solid lately, allowing just six earned runs over his past 11.0 innings on the mound. He will, however, need to start working a bit deeper into games. He’ll also need to find a way to figure out the Giants, as he allowed six hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings of work the last time he faced them (Apr. 27). If Cashner can throw a quality start then the Padres will be in solid shape in this one.

One guy that is really going to be looking forward to this matchup is OF Jon Jay (.269 BA, 1 HR, 14 RBI). Jay has really hit well against Samardzija in his career, going 10-for-14 with two RBI in the matchup. Since he’ll likely be hitting in the leadoff spot, it’ll be huge if he can get on base a few times in this one. It’ll be up to the rest of the Padres’ hitters to drive in some runs, though.

The Giants are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now and they’ll be looking to keep up their excellent play with Jeff Samardzija on the bump on Tuesday. He has been in the zone for San Francisco recently, allowing just five earned runs in his last 31.2 innings of work. His last start also happened to be against this Padres team on May 19 and he allowed only one earned run in eight innings of work. If he can replicate that performance then it’s likely that the Giants will keep their winning streak alive.

A few of San Francisco’s bats should be able to get it going in this one as well. C Buster Posey (.263 BA, 5 HR, 17 RBI) is one guy that has really given Cashner trouble in the past. He is 11-for-25 with two homers and five RBI against the San Diego pitcher in his career. OF Brandon Crawford (.248 BA, 6 HR, 22 RBI) is another guy that will be looking forward to this matchup, as Crawford is 6-for-15 with a homer and five RBI against Cashner.
