New York at Toronto

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees get ready to duel again after the Blue Jays held on for a 4-2 victory last night. According to opening odds at Bovada.lv the Blue Jays are -$1.55 home favorites with the total set at 9.0 runs.

Blue Jays in the midst of an 8-3 run look to keep the monmentum going handing the ball to southpaw J.A. Happ carrying a 6-2 record, 3.20 ERA. In his last effort, he tossed 7 inning of 3 hit 1 run ball picking up a win against these same Yankees in the Bronx marking a second consecutive win vs New York this season.

Yankees ridding a 3-4 stretch counter with lefty C.C. Sabathia, who has a 3-3 record, 2.83 ERA entering tonight’s contest and was the losing pitcher hooked up against Happ when the clubs met on May 26th.

The fact, Happ is a portsider is bad news for New York, since Yankees are just 6-12 this season against lefthanders and have just two wins in the last eleven road attempts vs a southpaw. In addition, Joe Girardi's troops have been on the wrong end of the scoreboard in seven consecutive as underdogs facing a lefty on the road.

Another positive for Toronto backers, the East has been a Beast for the Yankees of late when on the road. The last thirteen in an A.L. East oppenent's back-yard the result has been 3 wins, 10 losses. Blue Jays 3-1 at the Rogers Center with Happ the numbers clearly point to Toronto being the right choice.

Los Angeles at Chicago

Cubbies Jake Arrieta is undefeated on the campaign at 9-0 with a sparkling 1.72 ERA and has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of ten starts. As a team, the Cubs have won twenty-five of Arrieta's last twenty-six starts. This will be Arrieta's first game vs the Dodgers since his no-hitter against them last August. A very telling baseball betting stat leap out in this one. The last five pitchers to no-hit a team are 0-5 the next time they faced the same team.

MLB Weekly Dose 5/31-6/03
By Brandon Shively
Covers.com

5/31--Chi White Sox (Latos) @ N.Y. Mets (Matz)----Latos has regressed during the month of May which was fully expected to the tune of a 6.48 FIP. Opposing batters are hitting .326 vs him and he is giving up 2 home runs per nine innings. The Mets will call on Steven Matz who has 28 strikeouts to only 2 walks this month and a 1.26 ERA. The Mets have won his last seven starts. Matz throws a 93-94 MPH sinker that has stifled hitters and has added a slider this year to go along with his curve and changeup that gives him one of the best four pitch arsenals in the game. Before Monday’s game, the White Sox had lost six straight games and the bullpen had blown the lead in their previous two games. The Mets maintain a Top 10 bullpen and I think this is a game where laying the -1.5 runs is warranted. The White Sox offense is at a disadvantage not being able to use their DH , Avisail Garcia, who is hitting .292 for the month of May. Let’s take a closer look at the Mets (-1.5 runs) Tuesday night.

6/01--Washington (Scherzer) @ Philadelphia (Morgan)----I recommended fading Morgan in my ‘Weekly Dose’ on the road against the Cubs, and that turned out to be an easy winner. Wednesday, I think he is worth another strong fade, as the Nationals offense has fared very well vs. left handed pitchers this season. The Nationals are ranked 3rd in the Majors in weighted On Base Average this season and they will have Maz Scherzer on the mound who has held current members of the Phillies lineup to a .191 career batting average. Scherzer ran into trouble in one inning his last start, but was dominant the other 6 innings. Scherzer racked up 60 strikeouts last month and the Nationals are 3-0 in his three career road starts vs. the Phillies. Again, I think this is a good spot to lay the -1.5 runs as I can count on the Nationals to score runs off of Morgan and also count on the Nationals bullpen that is ranked #5 in the Majors to seal the deal.

6/02--Boston (Porcello) @ Baltimore (Jimenez)----We have two good offensive teams in a hitters ballpark, coupled with a struggling Jimenez along with Rick Porcello who appears to be due for a regression. Current members of the Orioles are hitting .299 vs Porcello and he has a lifetime 5.45 ERA vs. the Orioles in 71 IP. Jimenez appears on the verge on getting demoted and it’s best to make money fading him while we still can. He finished the month of May with only 19 strikeouts to go with 19 walks. The OVER is 4-0 in his last four starts. With the Red Sox leading the Majors in runs scored a game and the oddsmaker still showing a bit too much respect for Porcello, I think we see a final score in the 6-5 range and the OVER is worth a second look.

6/03--Atlanta (Teheran) @ L.A. Dodgers (Kershaw)----This is going to be one of those ‘Low Risk-High Reward’ type of plays. Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers has been on fire and I fully understand it’s tough to fade him, especially against the Atlanta Braves. But we will be looking at the Braves as an underdog of +250 or more with Julio Teheran who has been very good himself lately. Teheran finished the month of May with a 1.38 ERA. The Braves won at the Cubs and at Pittsburgh also when he was on the mound. Teheran only scattered 6 hits and 2 runs vs. the Dodgers earlier this season. Other than Kershaw, the Dodgers are not a good team in general. The offense is inconsistent and the bullpen is also inconsistent. Another situational factor is that the Dodgers are coming off a big series vs. the NL leading Chicago Cubs and a slight letdown might be in store. Kershaw gave up 10 hits vs the Braves earlier this season and current members of the Braves are hitting .280 against him. If we can get the upset here, the payout will be huge and well worth it.

Some of these pitching matchups might change, so it’s always good to check daily for changes and injuries, etc.

Dodgers, Cubs square off
By Sportsbook.ag

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (27-25) at CHICAGO CUBS (35-14)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles +200, Chicago -220, Total: 7.5

The Cubs will be going for their seventh straight victory when they host the Dodgers on Tuesday.

The Dodgers have been playing well lately, winning six of their past eight games coming into this one. They did, however, lose 2-0 against this Cubs team on Monday and now have to face RHP Jake Arrieta (9-0, 1.72 ERA, 67 K) on Tuesday.

That means that runs might be even harder to score this time out. For the Dodgers, LHP Scott Kazmir (4-3, 4.84 ERA, 60 K) will be taking the mound in this one.

One trend worth pointing out is that the Dodgers are 27-8 against the money line after a game where they had four or less hits over the past three seasons.

The Cubs, however, are 20-2 against the money line with Arrieta on the mound as a favorite of -150 or more over the past two seasons.

Chicago has also won in each of Arrieta’s past 23 starts, which is tied for the longest streak in MLB history. OF Trayce Thompson (Back) is probable for the Dodgers in this one and he is really the only starter who was at risk of missing this game for either team.

Scott Kazmir will be the guy tasked with pitching against Jake Arrieta on Tuesday and he should be feeling pretty confident coming into this one. Kazmir is coming off of one of his best starts of the season, allowing just one earned run and striking out 12 batters in six innings against the Reds on May 25.

He hasn’t, however, faced this Cubs team and the team’s lineup is a lot better than Cincinnati’s. Kazmir will need to make sure he keeps his walks down and he also can’t afford to let any of his pitches hang too high in the strike zone.

Offensively, the only guys that have had any success against Arrieta are 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.296, 5 HR, 26 RBI), OF Carl Crawford (.200, 0 HR, 6 RBI) and OF Yasiel Puig (.239, 5 HR, 20 RBI).

Gonzalez is 5-for-18 with a homer and two RBI against Arrieta and also happens to be hot coming into this one. He has eight hits over the past four games and will need to come through in this one.

Crawford, meanwhile, is no guarantee to be in the lineup, but he is 5-for-14 with a homer and three RBI against Arrieta in his career. Against such a dominant pitcher, it’d be wise for Los Angeles to give him a shot on Tuesday.

Puig, however, will be in the lineup and he is 2-for-3 with a double against Arrieta. That is a small sample size, but perhaps he sees something that his teammates do not. It’d be big if Puig can break through and have a good game in this one.

The Cubs have been on fire recently and now Jake Arrieta will be on the mound to try to earn yet another victory for his team.

Arrieta has been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball recently, but he is coming off of his worst start of the season on May 25. Arrieta allowed four earned runs on seven hits in just 5.0 innings of work against the Cardinals that game. Chicago did, however, win 9-8 and will be hoping that Arrieta got that type of performance out of his system.

As for the lineup in this game, the Cubs will be hoping for some big performances from guys like 2B Ben Zobrist (.351, 7 HR, 35 RBI) and 1B Anthony Rizzo (.239, 11 HR, 37 RBI). Zobrist has been one of the best hitters in the league all season and he now has five multi-hit games in his past 10 outings.

It’d be big if he can get on base a couple of times in this one. Rizzo, meanwhile, had been slumping badly before going 2-for-3 with an RBI two games ago and 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI against the Dodgers on Monday.

The Cubs are counting on him to produce some runs and he’ll likely need to record an RBI or two on Tuesday.

Tuesday's Game of the Day: Dodgers at Cubs
By Covers.com

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs (A: +185, H: -225, Total: 7.5)

The last time Jake Arrieta faced the Los Angeles Dodgers, he threw his first career no-hitter. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner would have to duplicate that feat Tuesday to top what the Chicago Cubs’ pitchers did to the visiting Dodgers in the opener of the three-game series.

The Cubs need a deep outing from Arrieta after burning through the bullpen Monday. Starter Jason Hammel left after two innings with cramping in his right hamstring before four relievers combined for seven perfect innings to complete a one-hitter in Chicago’s 2-0 victory. The Cubs have won six straight since a season-high three-game losing streak and they’ve allowed a total of five runs over the past four games. Monday’s loss was just the second in eight games for the Dodgers, who have allowed two or fewer runs in six of their last seven contests.

INJURY REPORT:

Dodgers - CF T. Thompson (Questionable Tuesday, back).

Cubs - CF D. Fowler (Questionable Tuesday, heel).

WEATHER REPORT: There will be the possibility of thunderstorms in the Chicago area Tuesday evening which will also bring with it a 25 percent change of rain throughout the game. As usual at Wrigley Field you have to keep your eyes on the wind forecast - 10 mph wind is expected to be blowing from right field to left field. Temperature at gametime will be in the mid-70's and there will be significant humidity in the air (65 percent).

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Scott Kazmir (4-3, 4.84 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (9-0, 1.72)

Kazmir has been wildly inconsistent with his command, as he struck out 12 in his last start after walking seven in his previous outing. The 32-year-old was excellent Wednesday against Cincinnati, allowing one run and four hits over six innings in addition to the 12 strikeouts to win his second straight decision. Kazmir is 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in two starts against the Cubs, but he hasn’t faced them since 2010 with the Angels.

The Cubs have won Arrieta’s last 23 starts, tying the major-league record set by Atlanta’s Kris Medlen from 2010-12. Arrieta has won 20 straight decisions, including one Wednesday at St. Louis when he didn’t have his best stuff and allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings. Before his no-hitter at Los Angeles last season, Arrieta had struggled in two previous starts against the Dodgers, losing both in 2013.

TRENDS:

* Dodgers are 1-4 in Kazmir's last 5 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
* Cubs are 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a left-handed starter.
* Cubs are 23-5 in Arrieta's last 28 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
* Over is 5-0 in Dodgers last 5 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
* Over is 9-1 in Arrieta's last 10 starts overall.
* Under is 8-0 in the last 8 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The Consensus data is leaning heavily in favor of Jake Arrieta and the Cubs with 75 percent of the wagers. There is, at the time of publication of this preview, no data on the total due to the standard late release of Wrigley Field totals
