Wednesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (20-4, 2.73 ERA)

Weaver has won four consecutive starts since falling to the Mariners on Sept. 2. He also lost to Seattle on Aug. 12 when Montero hit two homers. Weaver is 12-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 24 career starts against the Mariners. He needs nine strikeouts for his fifth consecutive season of 150 or more strikeouts.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (14-9, 3.46 ERA)

Vogelsong is 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 16 career games against the Dodgers, including 2-1 with an 0.89 ERA in three starts this season. After struggling for much of August and September, he has allowed just two runs (one earned) in 12 innings over his last two starts. Kemp is 5-for-15 (.333) with a home run against Vogelsong.

Slumping

Daisuke Matsuzaka, Boston Red Sox (1-6, 7.68 ERA)

Matsuzaka will be making what is likely his final appearance in a Boston uniform. The hugely hyped right-hander ended up having two solid seasons and four injury-marred campaigns with the Red Sox after a posting fee and six-year contract that came out to more than $100 million. Matsuzaka has made four starts in September, going 0-3 with a 13.50 ERA. He last pitched at Tampa Bay on Sept. 19 and lasted only three innings, allowing five runs. He is 3-3 with a 5.52 ERA in 10 career starts against New York.

Edwin Jackson, Washington Nationals (9-11, 4.13 ERA)

Jackson slipped to 0-4 in his career against the Phillies when he lost on Aug. 24, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings. He was roughed up in his last start when he gave up nine runs (eight earned) in just 1 1/3 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Jackson had a 7.92 ERA in five September starts. He is 0-3 with a 4.34 ERA in three starts against the Phillies this season.

Wednesday’s Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Here’s a look at MLB odds for hot and cold pitchers that may offer some value on Wednesday.

Hot

Cliff Lee (+125), Phillies at Nationals: Lee has lost his past two starts by scores of 2-1, which is not necessarily hot from the standards we’ve set this season. However, he’s hot in the sense that he hasn’t given up more than one earned run over his past four starts. He also gained two of his six wins on the season in his only two starts against the Nationals. Lee is the dog today because the Nationals are playing for home field throughout the playoffs. If this game was in August, Lee, in his current form, would be the favorite.

Ian Kennedy (-190), Diamondbacks vs. Rockies: Arizona has won his past six starts, with his last two getting an explosion of offensive support from the D’Backs bats. Arizona has also won five straight against the Rockies behind Kennedy dating back to 2011.

Jered Weaver (-180), Angels at Mariners: It’s a little bit anticlimactic since the Angels have the reality of not making the playoffs violently shoved in their faces, but now it’s all about getting Weaver his personal awards and accomplishing it as a team. He’s won his past four starts and has allowed a combined six earned runs over that span. Should he get his 21st win of the season today, he’d be hard to vote against for the Cy Young award. The one knock on him may be that two of his four losses have come against the Mariners. They were his only two starts against them this season.

Chris Tillman (-130), Orioles at Rays: The O’s have won five of his past six starts, and he’s been sensational in all of them, even the 2-1 loss against Boston two weeks ago. Over his last five starts, he’s given up four earned runs. He’s facing a Rays squad against whom he’s won his last two outings, only giving up two runs between them. Baltimore will definitely be scoreboard watching, hoping that a Red Sox win over the Yankees forces a one-game playoff for the AL East title.

Cold

Ben Sheets (-135), Braves at Pirates: Sheets has said today’s start will be the last of his career. He won’t be on the Braves’ post-season roster, and he’s taking over the start that would have been Tim Hudson’s. But it’s hard to dismiss what he did prior to taking a stint on the DL. After the Braves won the first four of his five starts, with Sheets pitching in magnificent fashion coming off of Tommy John surgery, he proceeded to lose his next three starts. He hasn’t started since Aug. 24, but in those last three starts, he was roughed up for 14 runs combined. He’ll be facing A.J. Burnett, who is trying to get his 17th win of the season and has allowed two runs or less in his past four starts.

Travis Wood (-120), Cubs vs. Astros: The Cubs have lost his past three starts, after a mini-two game run where he won two straight on the road. At home, the Cubs have lost his last eight home starts. In his last start, he gave up five runs in five innings of work. However, he’s beaten the Astros in his past two starts against them.

Jeff Francis (+180), Rockies at Diamondbacks: The Rockies have lost their past five games that Francis has started. He hasn't gone further than the fifth inning in any of them, as expected with the Rockies short rotation and pitch count. He lost his last start at Los Angeles, 8-0, giving up five earned runs in four innings. The Rockies are 1-1 when he faces Arizona this season.
