Wednesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (10-4, 2.85 ERA)

Bumgarner was almost perfect in his last outing, allowing just one hit and two walks in a complete-game 5-0 shutout of Cincinnati. He needed just 107 pitches to get the 27 outs and has now won five of his last six starts. He has thrown at least six innings in each of his last 15 trips to the mound.

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (11-4, 2.92 ERA)

Price has won three consecutive starts, firing seven solid innings in each. He was cruising along in his last start against Detroit, having allowed just two runs on five hits over seven innings, but was forced to hit the showers with tightness in his lower back. The Rays expect him to be fine to climb the hill Wednesday against the Yanks.

Slumping

Hector Noesi, Seattle Mariners (2-10, 5.96 ERA)

Just when you thought Noesi might be ready to turn it around, he goes out and allows a season-high four home runs. He held San Diego to two runs over six innings in a tough 2-0 loss on June 24, but then was hammered for five runs over five innings while the Boston Red Sox repeatedly took him deep. The Mariners have lost each of his last four outings.

Jeremy Guthrie, Colorado Rockies (3-7, 6.56 ERA)

Guthrie comes out of the bullpen to make his first start since June 17. He allowed at least five runs in four of his first six starts before being bumped from the rotation and wasn’t all that dependable coming on in relief either. He was spanked for three earned runs and two homers in just two innings of work in giving up a lead against San Diego last week.

Minnesota at Detroit

When Detroit and Minnesota play the third of this four game set at Comerica Park the Tigers will hand the ball to Justin Verlander (8-5, 2.69 ERA) while Twins counter with Brian Duensing (1-4, 4.10 ERA). Tigers suffering back-2-back losses to open the set with Twinkies have got to like their chances with Verlander heading to the hill. The hurler taken deep three times in a loss in Tampa will be in one ugly mood, primed to bear down in front of the home crowd. Detroit on a 9-0 streak at home off a loss handing the ball to their ace and Minnesota on a 1-9 skid with Duensing as a starter Tigers get pay-back tonight. Keep in mind Verlander has a 5-0 streak going vs Minnesota over seven starts (6-0 TSR) and a 7-1 team start stretch at home in July. That said, were recommending Detroit on the 1.5 run-line (-$1.20) rather than the whopping -$2.50 to -$2.70 set by betting markets.

Philadelphia - NY Mets Preview
By Bovada.lv

In one of the most hard-to-fathom statistics of the 2012 Major League Baseball season, Philadelphia Phillies lefty Cliff Lee, a former Cy Young winner and considered one of a handful of the best pitchers in baseball, is still winless on the season. He tries yet again for win No. 1 in Wednesday afternoon’s matinee at the New York Mets. Philadelphia is a slight -120 favorite on BOVADA's MLB baseball odds.

The Phillies are simply a mess, having lost five straight entering Tuesday’s game and last in the NL East, a whopping 11 games behind Washington. They are nine games under .500 for the first time since July 25, 2006, when they were 44-53. There’s talk that Philadelphia might start a fire sale by trading pitcher Cole Hamels and outfielder Shane Victorino, among possibly others. Jim Thome and Chad Qualls already have been dealt.

Lee (0-5, 4.13) allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Marlins last time out. He has allowed five or more earned runs in three consecutive starts, carrying an 8.64 ERA in that span. He has a 5.68 ERA in his last eight starts. The Phillies are 3-10 when he starts. Lee, who got a five-year, $120 million deal from the Phils in December 2010, says he is healthy. And he has had bad starts before. He had three consecutive starts of five or more earned runs (9.33 ERA) with the Rangers in August 2010. He had a career-high four consecutive starts with five or more earned runs (11.70 ERA) with the Indians in July 2007. Lee hasn't earned a victory since Sept. 26, 2011, in a 4-2 win over the Braves.

Lee is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his career vs. the Mets. He has faced them three times this season, going 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 19 innings. New York counters with right-hander Chris Young (2-1, 3.30). He has allowed three runs or less in all five starts this year but hasn’t faced Philadelphia. Young is 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA in his career vs. Philly. Phillies second baseman Chase Utley loves facing Young, hitting .364 with two homers and five RBIs in the past five years against him.

The Phillies are 1-6 in their past seven road games vs. a right-handed starter. They are 12-2 in Lee’s past 14 road starts vs. teams with a winning record. The Mets are 10-2 in their past 12 home games vs. teams with a losing road record.
