Wednesday's Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (15-6, 3.06 ERA)

Hamels has not lost since Aug. 2 and has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last nine starts. The left-hander earned the team’s lone win in Houston over the weekend, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out eight in seven innings. Hamels has allowed four earned runs in each of his last two outings against New York but avoided the loss in each. He is just 5-10 with a 4.39 ERA in 20 career starts against the division rivals.

C.J. Wilson, Texas Rangers (12-9, 3.73 ERA)

Wilson has worked his way back from a swoon that saw him go winless in 11 starts for July and most of August. He had won three consecutive starts before taking a no-decision last time out, when he allowed four runs - three earned - on four hits at Kansas City. He's had mixed results against his former team, getting shelled for eight runs in 5 1/3 innings at Texas on Aug. 2 and pitching six scoreless innings at home on June 2.

Slumping

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-14, 5.87 ERA)

Romero started 8-1 before losing 13 of his last 14 starts with one tough-luck no-decision mixed in. He lasted just four innings last time out, walking four and allowing three runs on eight hits in a loss to Seattle. The Yankees have beaten Romero twice during the streak. He is 3-7 with a 5.00 ERA in 13 starts against them.

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (13-8, 2.92 ERA)

Hernandez had a 2.43 ERA before being touched up for 30 hits over his last three outings. He allowed seven runs and 10 hits in four innings while losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in his last start. Hernandez received a no-decision in his lone start against the Orioles this season when he allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He is 5-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 14 career starts against Baltimore.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals hitting a rough spot over the weekend getting swept in Atlanta try to right the ship when they host Los Angeles Dodgers in a three game set at Nationals Park. Despite Nationals being a Major League best 89-57 (+$2289) overall and a strong 44-27 (+$768) at home the club will be feeling a bit anxious. Dodgers have been a pain in Nats side this season winning all three meetings and enter the contest having won seven of the past eight encounters. But, Nationals have caught a break. The Dodgers are opening the set pitting struggling Aaron Harang (9-9, 3.79 ERA) against Jordan Zimmermann (10-8, 30.01 ERA). Harang hasn't made it through six innings since the middle of August posting an 0-2 record with Dodgers 0-4 over the four game span. L.A. on a 2-7 skid last nine w/Harang look for Nationals to move to 4-1 opening a series w/Zimmermann, 7-1 at home off a loss handing the ball to the hurler and Harang's September road team start record slipping to 0-7.

Wednesday’s Hot and Cold Pitchers
By: The Linemakers
Sportingnews.com

Hot

John Lannan (-115), Washington Nationals vs. L.A. Dodgers: He may not exactly be Stephen Strasburg, but in his first start filling in for him, Lannan had Strasburg-type results. He beat the New York Mets seven days ago, going 5 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Lannan has won all three of his starts this season, including two spot starts in late July and early August. If we go back to his starts last season, Lannan beat the Dodgers twice by identical 7-2 scores.

Kris Medlen (-135), Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins: The Braves have won all nine of Medlin’s starts this season, and he has gotten the decisions in seven of them. In his past two starts, he’s shown he is actually human by allowing three runs combined over 13 innings. In his four starts prior, he hadn’t allowed a singled earned run. Over the nine-game stretch, he’s allowed only eight walks and three home runs.

Lucas Harrell (+220), Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals: There was a period over July and August— right after the All-Star break — during which the only time the Astros had a chance to win was when Harrell was pitching. They went 7-39 over that stretch, but something changed for the better when the calendar changed. They started winning, and not just behind Harrell. They’ve gone 9-8 in the month, not great but surely an improvement from 7-39. Of the nine wins, three of them have come when Harrell was on the mound. He hasn’t got the decision in any of them, but it’s been Harrell’s consistency that has laid the foundation for the wins.

Trevor Cahill (-135), Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres: Arizona has won its past three games when Cahill’s been on the mound. Cahill got the decision in his past two starts, allowing only two runs in each while beating division leaders, San Francisco and Los Angeles. With 15 games to go, Arizona is currently 4 ½ games out of the last wild card spot, making each remaining regular-season game essentially a playoff game

C.J. Wilson (-120), L.A. Angels vs. Texas Rangers: Wilson has come up big in each of his past four starts, all Angels wins, in the most critical time of the season. The Angels still find themselves 3 games out for the final A.L. wild card berth with 14 games to go. They are 2-2 against the Rangers with Wilson on the mound this season but won his only start against them in Anaheim, 3-2, as he went six strong shutout innings.

Cold

Aaron Harang (+130), Dodgers at Nationals: The Dodgers have lost his past four starts and seven of his last nine. However, he’s allowed only 11 runs combined over the four games and three of the losses were one-run games.

Ricky Romero (+200), Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees: He’s taken the loss in his past six starts. And he’s been hit hard and has given up 20 walks over that span. Surprisingly, however, he’s served up only three home runs.

Bruce Chen (+170), Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago White Sox: The Royals have lost Chen’s past three starts, and he’s fortunate to have been tagged for only two of the losses — he’s given up five runs or more in all three starts. One of those losses came at Chicago (Sept. 8), where he allowed three home runs in six innings in the 5-4 defeat.

Felix Hernandez (-145), Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Orioles: After going through a dominant stretch where the Mariners won six of his seven starts, it’s almost as if the switch was turned off when September came around. He’s lost his past three starts and hasn’t made it out of the fifth inning in his last two. In these three September starts, he’s given up 16 runs. The notion that fatigue has set in has been squashed by manager Eric Wedge, noting that his velocity is still there. But something is obviously wrong.
