Wednesday's Diamond Notes
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Rangers (8-2 last 10)

Texas is catching fire at the right time, taking the final two games against Pittsburgh this past weekend before knocking off Cleveland twice as a road underdog. The Rangers pounded the Indians, 9-2 on Monday as +150 ‘dogs, followed by 7-3 triumph last night as +185 ‘dogs against Corey Kluber. Texas goes for the sweep tonight with ace Cole Hamels taking the mound, as the southpaw tries to bounce back from a 9-1 defeat to Pittsburgh his last time out. Since last July, Hamels’ squads are 5-1 when he starts following a loss in his previous outing.

Coldest team: Padres (2-8 last 10)

San Diego had a rough 48-hour stretch in Seattle, getting outscored by the Mariners, 25-7 in a pair of losses to finish its road trip at 1-7. Four defeats came by three runs or more, while allowing 39 runs in the last four setbacks to the Mariners and Diamondbacks. The task doesn’t get easier tonight for the Padres, who continue their interleague series with Seattle at Petco Park against Mariners’ ace Felix Hernandez. Seattle owns a fantastic 18-7 road record this season, while blanking the Padres in two matchups in San Diego last season.

Hottest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (3-0, 2.89 ERA)

Tanaka has yet to lose a decision in 10 starts this season, as New York owns a 7-3 record in his 10 trips to the mound. The New York right-hander has dominated in his past two starts on the road, beating the Athletics and Rays by allowing a total of seven hits and one earned run in 14 innings of work. Tanaka picked up a no-decision in a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays earlier this season, 3-2, as New York looks to avoid the sweep at Toronto.

Coldest pitcher: John Lamb, Reds (0-3, 6.85 ERA)

It’s been a season to forget for Cincinnati, who has amassed five road victories in 25 tries. Lamb is winless in five starts for the Reds, while allowing 17 earned runs in his past three outings. The Cincinnati southpaw has been racked on the road by giving up 17 hits and 13 earned runs in losses at Cleveland and Milwaukee. Pitching at Coors Field won’t help Lamb’s cause, as the Rockies have scored 25 runs in the first two games against the Reds, including a 17-spot in Tuesday’s rout.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (5-0 last five)

Philadelphia’s offense has dried up of late, scoring a total of eight runs during its current five-game losing streak. The Phillies aren’t exactly losing low-scoring affairs, as Philadelphia has allowed nine runs in two losses to Washington, which is in stark contrast to the three runs given up to the Nationals in a three-game sweep in late April. Max Scherzer takes the mound for the Nats tonight as he has cashed the ‘over’ in consecutive starts, while beating the Phillies in each of his last three outings at Citizens Bank Park.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (11-0 last 11)

Arizona has slumped to a 2-6 record in the last eight games, as most of those woes are directed towards the pitching staff. The D-backs have allowed at least seven runs in six of those contests, while giving up 25 runs in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Pirates in late May. Robbie Ray takes the mound in Houston tonight for the D-backs, as the southpaw has eclipsed the ‘over’ in six of his past seven starts. In Ray’s last three road outings, he hasn’t compiled a quality start, resulting in three ‘overs.’ However, in his first two away starts this season, he put together a quality outing and Arizona cashed the ‘under’ each time.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Cubs

Each of the first two matchups between these squads resulted in a shutout. The Cubs topped the Dodgers in the opener on Monday, 2-0, but Los Angeles responded with a 5-0 triumph last night as Jake Arrieta was denied his 10th victory of the season. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Chicago, who has lost consecutive games at Wrigley Field only once this season. Jon Lester ended a two-game skid with a 6-2 victory over the Phillies in his last start, scattering six hits and allowing two runs in 6.1 innings as a -285 favorite. The Dodgers solved Lester twice last season, beating the southpaw twice while touching him up for nine runs in 10 innings.

Betcha didn’t know: The Astros have caught fire of late by winning seven of their last eight games, including a pair of victories at Arizona the past two days. Houston improved to 6-2 in the previous eight matchups with Arizona since the start of 2015, while scoring at least five runs in five of those games. The one coincidence with this recent hot streak for Houston was right fielder George Springer getting moved to the lead-off spot, resulting in a 7-1 record and getting within five games of the .500 mark.

Biggest public favorite: Mariners (-170) at Padres

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (-105) at Marlins

Biggest line move: Athletics (-115 to -135) vs. Twins

Dodgers, Cubs conclude series
By Sportsbook.ag

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (28-25) at CHICAGO CUBS (35-15)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles +170, Chicago -200, Total: 8.5

The Dodgers will be looking to win their second straight game when they face the Cubs on Wednesday.

Los Angeles will be coming into this game with a ton of confidence, as the team just defeated Chicago with Jake Arrieta on the mound. The Cubs had won 23 straight starts with Arrieta pitching, so it was not easy to pull off what the Dodgers did in that game. They won 5-0 and helped snap the Cubs’ six-game winning streak. A win on Wednesday would help Los Angeles improve to 6-4 at home against Chicago over the past three seasons.

The starters for this contest are set to be RHP Mike Bolsinger (1-1, 4.50 ERA 8 K) for the Dodgers and LHP Jon Lester (5-3, 2.48 ERA 59 K) for the Cubs. One trend that is really worth pointing out is that the Dodgers are a miserable 1-8 against the money line in road games after three straight games where their bullpen gave up no runs over the past two seasons. The Cubs also happen to be an impressive 80-47 against the money line in night games over the past two seasons.

OF Yasiel Puig (Hamstring) missed Tuesday’s game for the Dodgers and is listed as questionable for the team in this one. He’s the only player listed on the injury report that is worth mentioning for either team in this game.

Mike Bolsinger will be making his third start of the season on Wednesday and he was solid the last time he was on the mound for Los Angeles. He started a game against the Reds on May 24 and allowed just two earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. His stuff was on point in that game, as he struck out six batters and walked just one in the game. If he can come through with a similar performance then the Dodgers would be extremely satisfied.

Some guys to keep an eye on offensively in this one are 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.299, 5 HR, 27 RBI), OF Howie Kendrick (.231, 2 HR, 10 RBI) and OF Carl Crawford (.205, 0 HR, 6 RBI). Gonzalez has been on a tear for Los Angeles recently, racking up 10 hits in the past 10 games. He is, however, 0-for-6 against Lester in his career and will need to figure out a way to get on base in this one. Kendrick and Crawford, meanwhile, are a combined 17-for-61 with seven RBI and five doubles against Lester in their careers. It’s not a definite that either will be in the lineup in this game, but perhaps they could provide a spark at the plate for the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Jon Lester will be on the mound for the Cubs on Wednesday and he has been having a great season for Chicago. Yet, Lester has allowed 12 hits over his past 9.0 innings of work and will need to be a bit better in this one. If the Dodgers are constantly getting guys on base then they will make Lester pay eventually.

Offensively, the Cubs will need some production out of guys like 1B Anthony Rizzo (.236, 11 HR, 37 RBI), OF Jason Heyward (.220, 1 HR, 18 RBI) and 2B Ben Zobrist (.345, 7 HR, 35 RBI). Rizzo is one of Chicago’s most dangerous hitters but he is just 3-for-15 over the past five games and he has not homered in any of those contests. The Cubs need him to start displaying his power and it’d be big if he can do so on Wednesday.

Heyward, meanwhile, has been a massive disappointment for Chicago. He has, however, gotten hits in four of the past five games and perhaps he is turning the corner. Zobrist is the only guy that has consistently hit for Chicago this year. He has 16 hits in the past 10 games and should be able to continue to get on base at a high rate this season.
