Wednesday's Diamond Notes
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Rangers (5-0 last five) at Astros

Texas has certainly seen its ups and downs this season, but the Rangers are currently on the upswing. Following a three-game sweep of the Nationals this past weekend, the Rangers captured the first two games against the AL West-leading Astros at Minute Maid Park to extend their winning streak to five. This is the longest hot streak for Texas since stringing together 10 straight victories last month, but none of those wins came against a team with a winning record.

After getting swept by Houston earlier this month at home, Texas looks to return the favor this evening with Andrew Cashner taking the mound. The Rangers lost Cashner’s first four road starts this season, but the right-hander has rebounded in a big way by beating the Blue Jays and Nationals as an underdog of +155 or higher in his last two away appearances.

Coldest team: Orioles (0-6 last six) at White Sox

As the Yankees and Red Sox are ascending in the AL East, the Orioles are quickly going in the wrong direction. Baltimore looks to snap a six-game losing streak after dropping the first two games in Chicago, while coming off a 6-1 defeat to the White Sox on Tuesday. The Orioles’ pitching staff has been racked not only during this skid, but has allowed at least five runs in 12 of 13 games this month.

Right-hander Dylan Bundy tries to stop the bleeding for Baltimore, as the O’s are 1-5 in his previous six appearances. To make matters worse, Baltimore is winless in Bundy’s last three road starts, but he did beat the White Sox at home, 6-5 in early May as a -210 favorite.

Hottest pitcher: Michael Pineda, Yankees (7-3, 3.39 ERA)

New York continues to roll behind solid pitching as the Yankees have won four of Pineda’s last five starts. The right-hander shut down the Red Sox in his last start by tossing seven innings and allowing one run in a 9-1 victory. New York improved to 6-1 in his seven home outings, but the Yankees are 3-2 in his five road starts as he takes the mound against the Angels in Anaheim. Pineda beat the Angels in his lone start against Los Angeles last season, 6-3 as a -150 home favorite.

Coldest pitcher: Miguel Gonzalez, White Sox (4-7, 4.89 ERA)

Gonzalez faces the team that he spent the first four years of his career with, the Orioles. The right-hander owns a 9-15 record since joining Chicago prior to the 2016 season, as seven of those defeats have come since late April. In his last two starts against the Tigers and Indians on the road, Gonzalez allowed 16 hits and 10 earned runs in 10.2 innings of work, both defeats. However, the Sox are 2-0 in his two outings in the home underdog role, while Chicago has compiled a terrific 7-1 record in his past eight as a home ‘dog since July 2016.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (8-0 last eight)

You don’t normally associate long OVER streaks with the Padres, but San Diego has been scoring runs by the handfuls at home. In four of the first five contests on this homestand, the Padres have put across six runs or more, including a total of 15 runs in the first two wins against the Reds.

San Diego goes for the sweep of Cincinnati this afternoon with Jhoulys Chacin taking the mound. Chacin is riding a 7-1-1 stretch to the OVER in his last nine starts, while posting a miniscule 1.58 ERA at Petco Park in six home appearances.

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (6-0 last six)

Not only Texas is the hottest team right now, but its pitching has helped carried them to a nice UNDER run. Through its five-game winning streak, the Rangers have allowed a total of nine runs against two of the top three offenses in baseball (Washington and Houston). We’ll see how Texas’ offense responds against right-hander Francis Martes, who is making his first Major League start after allowing four earned runs in 3.2 innings of relief against the Angels this past weekend.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Indians

Los Angeles broke a 2-2 tie by scoring five late runs to beat Cleveland, 7-5 in the series opener on Tuesday. The Dodgers have won eight straight starts by Clayton Kershaw after the ace posted seven innings of six-hit ball, while Los Angeles became the second National League team to reach the 40-win mark.

Another former Cy Young winner takes the mound at Progressive Field on Wednesday as Corey Kluber looks to stay hot for Cleveland. Kluber is fresh off a pair of quality outings in victories over the Athletics and White Sox, while the Tribe owns a perfect 4-0 record in his four home starts this season. Dating back to last June, the Indians have put together a sizzling 17-2 record in Kluber’s past 19 home outings, but has not faced a National League team at home in the regular season since losing to the Mets last April.

Brandon McCarthy counters for Los Angeles, as the righty has yielded five earned runs in his last four starts. However, the Dodgers are 0-2 in his past two trips to the mound as L.A. has plated only one run in those two defeats as they lost to Washington’s Max Scherzer and St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright. The Dodgers are riding a five-game winning streak, while L.A. has won five of its past six Game 2’s of a road series.

Betcha didn’t know: The Twins and Mariners did their best impression of putting together football scores that resembled the Vikings and Seahawks. In the opener of their series at Target Field, Seattle blasted Minnesota, 14-3, while the Twins returned the favor with a 20-7 demolition of the Mariners last night. It’s another high total between these two teams tonight (10½), as Twins’ ace Ervin Santana looks to restore some normalcy to the scoreboard after coming off a shutout of the Giants in his last appearance.

Biggest public favorite: Giants (-180) vs. Royals

Biggest public underdog: Dodgers (+130) at Indians

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (-130 to -140) vs. Rays

Dodgers, Indians meet in Cleveland
By: StatFox.com

The Dodgers will be going for their sixth straight win when they face the Indians on Wednesday.

Los Angeles is rolling right now, as the Dodgers have won five straight games heading into this one. Their offense is really clicking at the moment, as they have now put up at an average of 7.0 runs per game over their past four. They’ll look to keep it up, but it won’t necessarily be easy against RHP Corey Kluber (5-2, 4.38 ERA, 59 K). Kluber has struggled a bit this season, but he is still one of the best pitchers in the game. The Dodgers don’t have a slouch on the mound either, though. They’ll be sending RHP Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 3.28 ERA, 51 K) out there in this one, and the righty has been as solid as could be this season. One trend that favors Los Angeles in this game is the fact that Cleveland is a lousy 1-8 against the money line in inter-league games this season. The Indians are, however, an impressive 33-10 against the money line after having lost four or five of their past six games over the past two seasons. One injury that needs to be mentioned is that 1B Adrian Gonzalez (Back) is on the 10-day DL. That is a big loss for the Dodgers, but they have been fine without him thus far.

The Dodgers are playing very well right now, and they’ll hope to keep it going with McCarthy on the hill on Wednesday. The righty has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four straight starts, and he has walked a total of five batters in those games. If he can continue to throw with pinpoint accuracy then things aren’t likely to change. McCarthy will continue to give Los Angeles solid innings, but that obviously is not as easy going against an offense that led Cleveland to the World Series last year. Offensively, the Dodgers will be hoping that both OF Yasiel Puig (.239 BA, 10 HR, 33 RBI) and OF Cody Bellinger (.261 BA, 17 HR, 39 RBI) can stay hot after Tuesday night’s game. Puig was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in that game, and Bellinger was 3-for-4 with a double, two homers, and four RBI. Los Angeles can’t expect the two of them to do that every game, but the two should be feeling confident on Wednesday.

The Indians need a victory on Wednesday, but that means that Kluber is going to need to keep up the good work. Kluber has been better than he was early on in the year over his past two starts, allowing just three earned runs in his last 12 innings of work. He struck out 18 batters over those two games, but he has still allowed seven or more hits in three of his past four outings. Kluber is much better than that, and the Indians are waiting for him to start having some of his signature dominant performances. If Cleveland is going to start winning games then the team will, however, need both SS Francisco Lindor (.254 BA, 12 HR, 27 RBI) and DH Edwin Encarnacion (.243 BA, 12 HR, 26 RBI) to start playing to their potential. Both guys have had underwhelming seasons, but it’s not too late for them to turn it around. It’d be huge if they can both play well on Wednesday.

Double-Play Picks

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (-160, 9.5)

The Nationals will look to continue to pad their standing in the National League East as they close out their three-game home set in a rubber match against the division rival Braves on Wednesday afternoon.

It has been high-scoring series thus far, which shouldn’t be a surprise the way Washington hammers the ball all over the field, but it was the Braves taking the opener 11-10, before the Nats responded with a 10-5 win on Tuesday night.

Those were the 10th and 11th times the Nationals have scored 10 runs or more in a game this season and the bats could stay hot in Wednesday’s series finale as Atlanta sends right-hander Julio Teheran to the mound.

Teheran has been dominated by the Nationals over the years, with the Braves going 0-8 in his last eight starts against Washington. The 26-year-old is 0-3 in those eight starts with a 6.11 ERA and a 1.692 WHIP. That includes an outing back on April 19th, where Teheran surrendered seven runs on seven hits in just four innings of work.

Teheran will once again have his hands full with a Nats’ lineup that ranks first in average, second in runs and OPS and fourth in home runs.

Washington counters by sending Tanner Roark to the hill. Roark has been solid for Washington this year going 6-3 with a 3.87 ERA and 1.304 WHIP. The right-hander also has a 4.11 strikeout to walk rate at home.

Pick: Nationals -160

Texas Rangers at Houston Astros (-160, 9.5)

The Rangers and Astros collide in the final game of their three-game series in Houston. The first two games of this series have gone Under the total, today is the day the bats come to play.

Andrew Cashner gets the ball for the Rangers this evening. To say we don't trust Cashner's 2017 pitching numbers is a bit of an understatement. His 3.17 ERA looks good on the surface, but this is a very hittable pitcher starting against a very good offensive lineup. The Astros rank No. 1 in the American League in batting average and rank second (behind the mighty Yankees) in slugging percentage and OPS. Cashner doesn't miss many bats with only 29 strikeouts in 65.1 innings this season. He actually has more walks (30) than strikeouts and the Astros should be able to expose him today.

The Astros will counter with their No. 1 prospect Francis Martes who gets the ball for his second major league appearance and his first major league start. The kid has a live arm, to be sure, but his 2017 numbers have been far less than impressive. His big league debut came against the Angels out of the bullpen last week and he surrendered four hits, four earned runs, two walks and a homerun - tossing 78 pitches in just 3.2 innings of work. And his numbers in AAA this season aren't any better with a 5.29 ERA and 2.103 WHIP in eight starts for Fresno of the Pacific Coast League. Walks are his biggest issue, surrendering 28 bases on balls in only 32.1 innings pitched.

If questionable starting pitching doesn't sway your opinion towards the Over, perhaps the fact that Manny Gonzalez will be calling balls and strikes tonight might do the trick. The Over is 7-0-2 in his last nine games behind the plate.

Pick: Over 9.5

Yesterday's Picks: 1-0-1
Season To Date: 60-52-7

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Edinson Volquez, Miami Marlins (3-7, 3.41 ERA, $-375)

Following up a no-hitter, with seven shutout innings definitely qualifies you as streaking. And that is exactly what Edinson Volquez is doing right now for the Marlins.

Volquez has pitch 16 straight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, while racking up 18 strikeouts to just four walks. Over his last four starts he has a 1.29 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP. Volquez and the Marlins are -165 home favorites this afternoon versus the A's.

Slumping: Jeremy Hellickson, Philadelphia Phillies (5-4, 4.50 ERA, $689)

On the surface, Hellickson's numbers don't look too terrible, but if you dive a bit deeper the Phillies' right-hander has struggled mightily in his last four outings, with Philadelphia losing three of those four games.

Hellickson has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last four starts and has pitched to a 6.85 ERA in those contests, with a WHIP of 1.747. Hellickson and the Phillies are +118 home dogs against the visiting Red Sox.

Wednesday's Top Trends

* Under is 5-0 in Edinson Volquez's last five home starts. A's @ Marlins O/U: 9.
* Rockies are 2-11 in the last 13 meetings in Pittsburgh. Rockies -114.
* Over is 6-0 in Rays last six overall. Rays @ Blue Jays O/U: 9.
* Under is 14-3 in Mike Leake's last 17 starts overall. Brewers at Cardinals O/U: 9

Weather To Keep An Eye On

Wednesday's forecast is calling for a beautiful day for baseball at most ball parks, but there are a few spots with slight chances of inclement weather and rain on tap.

In New York, where the Mets are slated to host the Cubs, there will be a moderate 11 mile per hour hitter's wind gusting out to left field (O/U: 9). In Detroit, there is an 11 mile per hour pitcher's wind gusting in from left field for today's Tigers-D-backs game (O/U: 9.5) and there's an 11 mile per hour wind blowing out to left-center field at Target Field in Minnesota when the Twins host the Mariners (O/U: 10.5). There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms in Washington, Chicago and Pittsburgh.

Ump Of The Day

Tom Woodring: Woodring will be behind the plate for today's interleague showdown in Detroit between the Diamondbacks and Tigers and while he was calling his first balls and strikes just back in 2014, since then he has tended to side with the Over. The Over is 31-20 (62 percent) over the course of his career, but more importantly for this game the Over is 7-0 in the last seven interleague matchups he has officiated. The Over is also 4-1 in his games this season when the total is above 8.5. The total for today's game is currently 9.5.
