Washington Nationals at Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox and Washington Nationals go at it in the second of a three game interleague series at U.S. Cellular Field. According to current odds at Bovada.lv the Nationals are -$1.55 road favorites.

Nationals have Max Scherzer taking the ball in game-two. Scherzer tossing eight innings, allowing two runs, five hits and two walks while striking out 11 in his last outing carries a 6-4 record, 3.87 ERA to the mound. Scherzer also has an abundant amount of experience vs White Sox acquired pitching for Detroit. In twenty-three starts against the South Siders the right-hander went 12-6-5 with a 2.54 ERA.

White Sox count on newly acquired James Shields in this one. The right-hander carries into Chicago a 2-7 record, 4.28 ERA, 57-27 SWR over 67.1 innings through 11 starts. Shields will certainly be looking for a better performance that his last one with Padres in which he lasted just 2 2/3 innings allowing 2 long-ball, a whopping 10 runs recording his seventh loss of the season. Shields lost his only start vs Washington wearing a Padres uniform.

Nationals ridding a 6-2 overall stretch after spanking Pale Hose 10-5 in the opener, 8-2 vs the Junior Circuit this season, White Sox hitting a rough patch losing four consecutive, 11 of their last 13 and 17 of their last 22 games ride Washington again tonight.

Wednesday's Diamond Notes
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Rangers (9-1 last 10)

Texas improved to 8-0 against Houston with another comeback victory against their state rivals last night, 4-3. The Rangers maintained their four-game lead in the AL West over the Mariners after winning their ninth game in 10 tries, while winning for the seventh straight time at Globe Life Park. Texas picked up its third consecutive one-run victory, while rallying in each of those wins. Yu Darvish takes the mound for the Rangers tonight against the Astros, looking to improve to 3-0 after beating the Pirates and Mariners in his first two starts since missing over a year following Tommy John surgery.

Coldest team: Royals (0-6 last six)

Kansas City closed out its last homestand with a perfect 6-0 record, but the Royals are current on a road trip straight out of the Twilight Zone. The Royals were swept in a four-game series by the Indians, while scoring two runs in the first two losses at Baltimore. In Tuesday’s 9-1 blowout loss to the Orioles, the Royals endured a benches-clearing brawl after Kansas City right-hander Yordano Ventura drilled Manny Machado as the Orioles’ third baseman charged the mound. The Royals have several regulars out due to injury and are playing plenty of young guys, but the offense has dried up by scoring four runs in the last five games.

Hottest pitcher: Madison Bumgarner, Giants (7-2, 1.91 ERA)

One of the best pitching matchups of the season takes place at AT&T Park in San Francisco tonight as Bumgarner opposes Boston’s David Price. The Red Sox got past the Giants last night in 10 innings, 5-3, but runs should be at a premium tonight. San Francisco owns a 6-0 record in Bumgarner’s last six starts, while the southpaw hasn’t lost a home decision since April 20 against Arizona. Bumgarner has allowed only one earned run in his past two home starts against the Cubs and Blue Jays, as the Giants’ ace is making his second career start against Boston after losing to the Red Sox back in 2010 at home.

Coldest pitcher: Taijuan Walker, Mariners (2-6, 3.94 ERA)

Things have gone backwards for Walker following a promising start as the right-hander has allowed 24 earned runs in his last five outings. Walker is winless in his last seven starts, while Seattle has won only once in this span, coming in a 6-5 victory over Tampa Bay last month. Walker has allowed five home runs in his last two starts, but the Indians have scored only four runs in the past two games of this series.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (4-1 last five)

Colorado fell short in Tuesday’s 4-3 setback at Los Angeles, but the Rockies cashed another ‘under’ against the Dodgers. Through the first five games of their current road trip against NL West foes, the ‘under’ has hit four times, as Colorado has allowed four runs or fewer in all five contests. Southpaw Chris Rusin takes the mound for the Rockies tonight against the Dodgers as the ‘under’ has cashed in three of his four starts away from Coors Field this season.

Biggest OVER run: Nationals (7-2-1 last 10)

Washington erased a 5-2 deficit at Chicago last night by scoring eight unanswered runs to beat the White Sox, 10-5 to cash the ‘over’ of 8½. The Nationals have scored 10 runs in back-to-back games, as they face newly-acquired James Shields tonight on the South Side of Chicago. Shields struggled with the Padres this season by going 2-7, while allowing 10 earned runs in 2.2 innings at Seattle in his final start before getting traded to Chicago. Max Scherzer counters for Washington, as the former Cy Young winner has eclipsed the ‘over’ in six of nine starts this season, including three of the last four road outings.

Matchup to watch: Mets vs. Pirates

Pittsburgh captured Tuesday’s double-header at PNC Park by beating New York by exact 3-1 scores. Noah Syndergaard looks to get the Mets back on track as the blonde right-hander goes for his seventh victory of the season. Four of Syndergaard’s six wins this season have come away from PNC Park, including a 6-2 triumph at Miami in his last outing. Rookie Jameson Taillon makes his Major League debut for the Pirates on the mound, as the second pick of the 2010 draft compiled a 4-2 record with an ERA of 2.04 at Triple-A Indianapolis. Since the start of last season, the Pirates have won all eight meetings with the Mets, as New York has scored two runs or less in all five losses at PNC Park.

Betcha didn’t know: The Yankees have won each of the last five home matchups with the Angels dating back to the start of 2015. New York has outscored Los Angeles in its current series, 11-5, as Nathan Eovaldi takes the ball tonight for the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers own a 4-1 record in Eovaldi’s five home starts this season, and 11-3 in his past 14 starts at Yankee Stadium since April 2015.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-200) vs. Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Athletics (+110) at Brewers

Biggest line move: Padres (-140 to -155) vs. Braves

Wednesday's MLB Game of the Day: Red Sox at Giants
By Covers.com

Boston Red Sox at San Francisco Giants (A: +100, H: -120, Total: 6.5)

The Boston Red Sox own the most prolific offense in baseball but will be put to a stern test Wednesday when they visit the first-place San Francisco Giants with red-hot Madison Bumgarner on the mound. Bumgarner is 6-0 with a 1.11 ERA in his last eight starts and opposes David Price, who makes his first appearance at AT&T Park in a battle of ace left-handers after Boston prevailed in the opener of the two-game series 5-3 in 10 innings Tuesday.

San Francisco catcher Buster Posey revealed he has been dealing with nerve irritation in his right thumb before missing his second straight game Tuesday and manager Bruce Bochy said his All-Star catcher might not play Wednesday. The Giants have lost three straight after seeing their five-game home winning streak halted, but still enjoy a three-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. Boston, which trails Baltimore by one-half game in the American League East, averages 5.9 runs per game. David Ortiz drove in a run as a pinch hitter Tuesday and manager John Ferrell is expected to keep his 40-year-old slugger in that role Wednesday as he seizes an opportunity to rest Ortiz without the benefit of a designated hitter in the NL park.

INJURY REPORT:

Red Sox - DH D. Ortiz (Doubtful Wednesday, rest), C B. Swihart (15-Day DL, ankle), LF B. Holt (15-Day DL, concussion).

Giants - C B. Posey (Doubtful Wednesday, thumb), RF H. Pence (15-Day DL, hamstring), RP S. Romo (15-Day DL, elbow), LF A. Pagan (15-Day DL, hamstring).

WEATHER REPORT: It's going to be a typical San Francisco night for baseball tonight for the game between the Giants and Red Sox. Partly cloudy, cool temperatures (60's), high humidity (85 percent), and a 25 mph wind blowing straight out toward McCovey Cove in right field.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (7-2, 4.88 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (7-2, 1.91)

Price is also on a bit of roll as he is 3-1 in his last five turns — all quality starts — while lowering his ERA 1.87 during that span. The 30-year-old Tennessee native suffered his first loss in nearly a month with a 5-2 setback to Toronto on Friday when he allowed three runs (two earned) and a season-high four walks in seven innings. Price is 0-1 with a 3.06 ERA in two starts versus San Francisco, including a 5-4 loss facing Bumgarner and the Giants while with Detroit on Sept. 6, 2014.

Bumgarner, who has 13 career home runs including two this season and five in 2015, expressed his desire to participate in the Home Run Derby prior to the All-Star Game, but manager Bruce Bochy told Bumgarner he'll be sticking exclusively with his day job. The 26-year-old North Carolina native is doing that well as he matched a season high with 11 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of a 6-0 victory in Atlanta on Thursday. Bumgarner is 7-7 with a 3.76 ERA in 17 interleague starts, including a loss in his only outing against Boston during his rookie season of 2010, and has fared well against Hanley Ramirez (5-for-28, six strikeouts).

TRENDS:

* Red Sox are 9-2 in their last 11 interleague games.
* Giants are 5-0 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter.
* Giants are 9-2 in Bumgarners last 11 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
* Over is 7-0 in Red Sox last 7 vs. National League West.
* Red Sox are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in San Francisco.
* Over is 4-0 in Timmons' last 4 games behind home plate.

CONSENSUS: 71 percent of the Covers public are backing Bumgarner and the Giants in tonight's battle with Price and the Red Sox. Over 6.5 is picking up 57 percent of the totals wagers with the public not trusting the low 6.5 number with the wind blowing out.

Yankees, Angels hook up
By Sportsbook.ag

LOS ANGELES ANGELS (26-32) at NEW YORK YANKEES (28-30)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles +165, New York -190, Total: 9.5

Nathan Eovaldi squares off against Jered Weaver as the Yankees go for their third straight win against the Angels in The Bronx.

The Yankees (28-30) took the opener of the series, 5-2, on Monday, and then beat the Angels (26-32), 6-3, on Tuesday. New York will look to take the four-game series on Wednesday when Yankees RHP Nathan Eovaldi (6-2, 4.09 ERA, 62 SO, 16 BB, 8 HR in 66 IP) takes on Angels RHP Jered Weaver (5-4, 5.18 ERA, 40 SO, 16 BB, 14 HR in 64 1/3 IP) at Yankee Stadium.

After pitching well for the majority of May, Eovaldi allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Orioles in his first June start. Weaver was solid in his last start, allowing two earned runs in six innings to beat the Pirates and push his record above .500.

The Yankees have beat up the Angels since 2014, going 10-4 against them over that span (and 7-1 at Yankee Stadium). Since 2014, nine of 13 games between these two clubs have gone UNDER the total. The Angels are 14-15 on the road this season. The Yankees have posted a 15-12 record in The Bronx.

The Angels’ best player is CF Mike Trout (.302, 12 HR, 41 RBI, .409 OBP), but Yankees pitching has kept him in check (0-for-6 with 2 BB and 2 SO) through the first two games of the series.

3B Yunel Escobar (.306, 3 HR, 17 RBI, .356 OBP) has given manager Mike Scioscia production out of the leadoff spot, and RF Kole Calhoun (.300, 7 HR, 32 RBI, .377 OBP) has done a solid job hitting in front of Trout.

DH Albert Pujols (.240, 12 HR, 40 RBI, .321 OBP) isn’t nearly the player that he once was, but he’s still a threat to go deep every time he comes to the plate. Trout (4-for-10 with 1 2B, 1 RBI and 2 BB) and Pujols (4-for-10 with 3 BB) have seen the ball well against Eovaldi, as have Escobar (3-for-7 with 1 RBI) and Calhoun (3-for-8 with 1 RBI and 1 BB). 2B Johnny Giavotella (.263, 2 HR, 18 RBI, .287 OBP) is 2-for-5 lifetime against Eovaldi.

In 16 career starts against the Yankees, Weaver is 7-5 with a 5.81 ERA and 1.409 OBP.

2B Starlin Castro (.259, 9 HR, 25 RBI, .295 OBP) and RF Carlos Beltran (.272, 15 HR, 38 RBI, .301 OBP) each homered in the first two games of this series, and C Brian McCann (.222, 8 HR, 22 RBI, .320 OBP) went deep in the opener.

CF Jacoby Ellsbury (.296, 2 HR, 18 RBI, .345 OBP) has been the most consistent Yankees hitter, though LF Brett Gardner (.240, 5 HR, 12 RBI, .362 OBP), 3B Chase Headley (.235, 3 HR, 12 RBI, .309 OBP) and DH Alex Rodriguez (.214, 7 HR, 18 RBI, .264 OBP) have really struggled for manager Joe Girardi.

The Bombers have seen a ton of Weaver over the years. Rodriguez has hit him very well in his career, going 11-for-29 with five homers, two doubles, eight RBIs and six walks. Beltran is 2-for-6 against the right-hander, but both of those hits were home runs. Ellsbury (7-for-27 with 1 HR, 1 2B and 1 RBI) and Gardner (4-for-22 with 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB and 11 SO) haven’t had much success against the three-time All-Star.

In four career starts against the Angels, Eovaldi is 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 1.801 WHIP.
