Wednesday's Diamond Notes
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Tigers (8-1 last nine)

Detroit began this month with a dreadful 2-11 mark and questions regarding Brad Ausmus’ status as manager. The Tigers have turned things around by winning all three series on their current homestand against the Twins, Rays, and Phillies, while going for the sweep of Philadelphia. Detroit received a dominating pitching performance from Justin Verlander in last night’s 3-1 victory, as Anibal Sanchez looks to turn things around this afternoon. Sanchez has allowed 17 earned runs in his last four outings, all Tigers’ losses, but all three of his victories this season have come during the day.

Coldest team: Twins (1-8 last nine)

If there is one team that can hit the reset button on this season, it’s the Twins. Minnesota owns the worst record in baseball at 11-34, which includes five losses to the defending champion Royals. Kansas City goes for the sweep of Minnesota this afternoon at Target Field, as the Twins have allowed 17 runs in the first two defeats. The Twins have dropped 11 of their last 12 games at home, while trying to avoid their fourth home sweep of the season. Tyler Duffey takes the mound for Minnesota in today’s matinee, as the Twins are winless in his two home starts this season after posting a perfect 4-0 record in his four outings at Target Field in 2015.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Arrieta, Cubs (8-0, 1.29 ERA)

Chris Sale suffered his first loss of the season in 10 starts last night as another Chicago ace tries to avoid a slip-up today. Arrieta continues to dominate following his Cy Young run last season as the Cubs’ right-hander has given up two earned runs or less in eight of nine starts. In five road starts, Arrieta has compiled a 5-0 record with an ERA of 0.97, but he lost twice in two starts at Busch Stadium last season.

Coldest pitcher: Scott Kazmir, Dodgers (3-3, 5.23 ERA)

Los Angeles looks to pull off the sweep against Cincinnati, as the Reds have lost 16 of 19 road games this season. Kazmir tries to get on track after dropping three of his four starts at Chavez Ravine this season, while allowing at least four runs in six of his past eight trips to the mound. The veteran southpaw has been taken deep seven times in his past four starts, while his teams (Astros and Dodgers) are 2-6 since last August when he is listed as a favorite of at least -140 (opened as -160 favorite tonight).

Biggest UNDER run: Rangers (4-1 last five)

Texas has stepped up its pitching recently by allowing seven runs in its previous five contests, while giving up three runs in the first two games of its series against the Angels. Colby Lewis continues to be a work-horse on the mound for Texas by tossing seven innings in five consecutive starts, as the right-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his past six trips to the mound. After going 1-4 against the Angels last season, Lewis yielded two earned runs in seven innings of a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles in late April as the game easily finished ‘under’ the total of 9 (tonight’s total is 9 ½).

Biggest OVER run: Pirates (9-3 last 12 at home)

Pittsburgh’s offense has torn up Arizona pitching this season by scoring 33 runs in four games (that includes one game scoring only one run). The Pirates lit up Shelby Miller in last night’s 12-1 drubbing in the series opener at PNC Park to cash the fifth ‘over’ in eight games on their current homestand. In four of their six victories on this homestand, the Bucs have plated at least eight runs, while rebounding in a big way after getting swept at home by the Cubs earlier this month. Jeff Locke takes the mound for Pittsburgh tonight, as the southpaw has eclipsed the ‘over’ in six of his last seven starts, including a 3-0 mark to the ‘over’ at home this season.

Matchup to watch: Orioles vs. Astros

Houston snapped a four-game losing streak in Tuesday’s 13-inning walk-off win over Baltimore thanks to a Carlos Correa RBI single. The Astros are mired in a hole inside the AL West following a playoff appearance last season, but Houston has won four of the last five home matchups with Baltimore. The Orioles have scored three runs or less in seven of their past 10 road contests, while posting a 5-5 record in this span. Tyler Wilson has pitched well for Baltimore away from Camden Yards as the O’s are 4-1 in his past five road starts since last season, including a 2-0 mark in 2016.

Betcha didn’t know: Indians’ right-hander Corey Kluber is facing the White Sox for the first time this season today. The former Cy Young winner was winless in three starts against Chicago in 2015, while allowing six earned runs each in two of those defeats. Following Cleveland’s victory at Boston in Kluber’s last outing, the Indians improved to 5-16 in the right-hander’s previous 21 road starts since the start of the 2015 season.

Biggest public favorite: Mariners (-180) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Orioles (+125) at Astros

Biggest line move: Diamondbacks (+115 to +105) at Pirates

Jays, Yankees meet in N.Y.
By Sportsbook.ag

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (22-25) at NEW YORK YANKEES (22-22)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Toronto -107, New York -103, Total: 8.5

The Yankees will be going for their seventh straight victory when they host the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Toronto has not started the season the way the team would have liked, but the Blue Jays can’t get too caught up on things like that. They need to start winning games and this series against the Yankees is big. New York won the opening game of this set 6-0 and that victory gave the team six in a row. The Yankees have scored five or more runs in four straight games and the offense is really clicking right now.

The starters in this game are set to be RHP Marco Estrada (1-2, 2.61 ERA, 50 K) for the Jays and RHP Ivan Nova (2-0, 1.65 ERA, 8 K) for the Yankees. One trend favoring Toronto is that New York is just 2-10 against the money line off a win of six or more runs over a division rival over the past three seasons. The Yankees are, however, 42-22 against the money line with a hot bullpen whose ERA is under 3.00 in its past 10 games over the past two seasons.

Marco Estrada is coming off of one of his best starts of the season, pitching 8.0 innings and allowing just one earned run against the Twins on May 19. Estrada struck out nine batters in that game and only walked one. He should be feeling confident coming into this matchup with the Yankees, but he has been a little shaky on the road this season. Estrada has a 1.69 ERA at home this season, but that number gets bumped up to 3.60 when pitching outside of Canada. He’ll be hoping to find some comfort at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, but it’s not necessarily an easy place to pitch.

The bats that the Jays will be leaning on in this game are the usual suspects. OF Jose Bautista (.232 BA, 10 HR, 34 RBI), DH Edwin Encarnacion (.235, 9 HR, 32 RBI) and 3B Josh Donaldson (.246 BA, 11 HR, 24 RBI) will all need to step it up in this game and they should be able to do it.

Bautista is hitting .348 with a homer and seven RBI against Nova in his career and the other two guys haven’t been much worse. Encarnacion is 10-for-30 with a homer and seven RBI against him and Donaldson is 7-for-16 versus Nova. If they can channel that success on Wednesday then they’ll make things a bit easier on Estrada.

The Yankees will be sending Ivan Nova to the hill on Wednesday and he has been pitching very well for the team lately. Nova has allowed just three earned runs in his past 16.1 innings of work and all three of those runs came on solo homers. If he can find a way to avoid letting his pitches hang then he should be even better moving forward.

It also will help Nova that the Yankees’ offense has been hot lately. Two guys that must be watched coming into this one are OF Carlos Beltran (.275 BA, 10 HR, 29 RBI) and 2B Starlin Castro (.269 BA, 5 HR, 18 RBI). Beltran has seen his batting average rise from .244 to .275 since May 14 and also happens to be 7-for-24 with three homers and five RBI against Marco Estrada in his career. Castro, meanwhile, is an absurd 12-for-27 with two RBI and four doubles against Estrada. It’d be big if both of them can get it going on Wednesday.
