MLB: Streaks, Tips, Notes

Arizona at Miami

The presence of Jose Fernandez on the mound bodes well for Miami's chances. History shows Jose Fernandez loves pitching in front of the friendly crowd at Marlins Park. In the righthanders 28 starts at the venue he is 18-1 with Miami 24-4 in those games. The dominance is reflected by the fact he's allowed an average 1.91 runs/game over the span with a 214-49 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Fernandez will be trading pitches with Rubby DeLarosa carrying a 3-3 record, 4.18 ERA over four starts, three relief appearances tagged for 3 long-ball, 13 runs over 23 2/3 innings.

Texas at Toronto

The third matchup of a four game series between Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers this evening at Rogers Center should grab the attention of 'Under' gamblers. Blue Jays unable to find a consistent stroke at the plate crossing 3.9 runs/game have played 'Under' 64.3% of the time cashing 18 'Under', 8 'Over', 2 'Push'. Rangers following in that same vein are crossing 3.4 runs/game in enemy territory posting 9 'Under', 3 'Over'.

Matching that, 'Under' has been the correct betting option with Aaron Sanchez handed Jays' starting durites. Sanchez has shown that he can keep the score low. In his last ten starts the 'Under' has paid out eight times (2-8 O/U). Have the hurler toss in front of the friendy crowd at Rogers Center the 'Under' has paid out six times (2-6 O/U). Sanchez trades pitches with Colby Lewis off back-2-back quality starts allowing 3 runs with each game playing 'Under'. Lewis has also shown he can keep the score low tossing north of the border. In three career starts in Toronto the game has played 'Under' in each case.

Wednesday's Diamond Notes
By Kevin Rogers
VegasInsider.com

Hottest team: Marlins (8-1 last nine)

In spite of losing last season’s NL batting champion Dee Gordon to an 80-game suspension, Miami has continued to roll by winning eight of its past nine games. The Marlins pulled off a four-game sweep of the Dodgers and grabbed two of three at Milwaukee on their recent road trip to improve to 12-12. Miami returned home and rallied past Arizona on Tuesday, 7-4 to grab only their third home victory of the season. Tonight, the Marlins turn to ace Jose Fernandez to keep their winning ways going as Miami owns a 24-4 record when the right-hander takes the mound at home.

Coldest team: Yankees (0-7 last seven)

The Bronx Bombers aren’t producing much from an offensive standpoint, as New York is tied for last in the American League in run scored. New York fell to 3-9 on the highway after scoring just one run in Tuesday’s loss at Baltimore. The Yankees have lost 14 of their past 18 games, including a 1-7 mark in their last eight attempts as an underdog. CC Sabathia looks to end New York’s woes tonight, but the southpaw has allowed three earned runs in each of his first four outings, while the Yankees have dropped five straight meetings with the Orioles.

Hottest pitcher: Colby Lewis, Rangers (2-0, 3.19 ERA)

Texas has won three of Lewis’ last four outings, as the veteran right-hander has given up three earned runs in his last two starts. The Rangers beat the Angels as a home underdog in Lewis’ previous outing, 4-2, as he tossed seven innings for the first time this season. Texas owns a 7-4 record in Lewis’ last 11 starts in the road underdog role since last June, including a victory as a +155 ‘dog last month at Seattle.

Coldest pitcher: Phil Hughes, Twins (1-4, 4.45 ERA)

Minnesota fell to 2-11 away from Target Field following Tuesday’s 6-4 defeat at Houston. Hughes tries to turn around the Twins’ road luck as the right-hander has picked up only one win in five starts this season. The offense hasn’t offered much support for Hughes by scoring two runs or less in all four of his losses, resulting in three ‘unders.’ Minnesota has lost each of Hughes’ last five road starts since last season, but the only positive note for the Twins tonight is they face an Astros’ squad that hasn’t won consecutive games this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (6-0 last six)

Even though Toronto won on a walk-off homer to stun Texas on Tuesday, the Blue Jays produced their 18th ‘under’ in 26 games this season. One of the biggest mysteries with this Toronto club is the lack of production at home, as the Blue Jays have plated a total of five runs in the past four contests at Rogers Center. The Jays have knocked out 33 home runs, which ranks fourth in the American League, led by reigning MVP Josh Donaldson, who has hit nine, tied with Seattle’s Robinson Cano for the most in the AL.

Biggest OVER run: Brewers (6-0 last six)

Milwaukee owns the best ‘over’ record at home this season, by posting an 11-4 mark at Miller Park following Tuesday’s comeback victory over the Angels, 5-4. The Brewers have eclipsed the ‘over’ in seven of the last eight home contests, while scoring at least five runs six times in this span. Milwaukee has drawn a heavy interleague schedule so far, going 7-1-1 to the ‘over’ in nine games against American League foes, as the Brewers wrap up their series with the Angels this afternoon.

Matchup to watch: Tigers vs. Indians

Cleveland has owned Detroit this season by winning each of the first four meetings, including Tuesday’s 7-3 home victory as a -125 favorite. The Indians snapped a three-game losing streak, while ending Detroit’s five-game winning streak as the Tigers have scored just eight runs in the four losses to the Tribe. The Cy Young season that Corey Kluber put together in 2014 seems like a memory as the right-hander owns a 10-19 record in his last 29 decisions, including a 1-3 mark in 2016. However, Kluber’s only victory this season came against Detroit in his best outing, allowing two hits and one earned run in eight innings of work in a 10-1 victory on April 23.

Betcha didn’t know: The Phillies own an 8-8 record in Adam Morgan’s 16 career starts since June 2015. However, the southpaw beat the Cardinals in his Major League debut, 9-2 as a +170 home underdog, while seven of Philadelphia’s eight victories with Morgan on the mound have come as a ‘dog of +160 or higher.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-215) vs. Braves

Biggest public underdog: Dodgers (+145) at Rays

Biggest line move: Astros (-130 to -150) vs. Twins

Red Sox, White Sox clash
By Sportsbook.ag

BOSTON RED SOX (15-11) at CHICAGO WHITE SOX (19-8.)

Sportsbook.ag Line: Boston +105, Chicago -115, Total: 8.5

Carlos Rodon and the American League-best White Sox look to take the series from Clay Buchholz and the Red Sox in Chicago.

How about those White Sox (19-8.)? Robin Ventura’s team owns the best record in the American League—only the crosstown Cubs have a better mark—and holds a four-game lead over the second-place Tigers in the AL Central.

Chicago took the series opener from the Red Sox (15-11), 4-1, on Tuesday night and will look to take the three-game series on Wednesday. Pitching for the White Sox will be LHP Carlos Rodon (1-3, 4.33 ERA, 27 SO, 11 BB, 3 HR in 27 IP).

On the hill for John Farrell will be RHP Clay Buchholz (0-3, 6.51, 19 SO, 13 BB, 4 HR in 27 2/3 innings), who has allowed five earned runs in four of his five starts this season. Rodon is a bad matchup for the Red Sox, as Boston has gone 0-3 against left-handed starters this season, averaging just 1.3 runs in those games. Both Boston and Chicago have won five of their past seven games. The White Sox are 7-3 at U.S. Cellular Field, and the Red Sox are 7-4 away from Fenway Park.

The Red Sox have scored the most runs in the American League (135), and they do it without the long ball. Boston leads the AL in average (.280) and on-base percentage (.340), but is tied for second-to-last in the league with 22 home runs.

2B Dustin Pedroia (.321, 3 HR, 13 RBI, .367 OBP) has been Boston’s best hitter, and 3B Travis Shaw (.312, 3 HR, 17 RBI, .379 OBP), DH David Ortiz (.306, 5 HR, 19 RBI, .404 OBP) and SS Xander Bogaerts (.304, 1 HR, 11 RBI, .372 OBP) have been very solid as well. Rodon has never faced the White Sox, so these hitters will be seeing the 23-year-old for the first time.

Only LF Chris Young (.167, 0 HR, 1 RBI, .219 OBP)—a backup outfielder—has faced him before, going 2-for-5 with a double and a walk.

Buchholz has allowed 10 runs in his last 12 innings pitched, so he needs a bounce-back outing—badly. Unfortunately for the two-time All-Star, he has the difficult task of containing the best team in the AL. Despite their record, the White Sox haven’t hit a ton through the first 27 games (106 runs – 7th in AL).

No regulars are hitting over .300, as LF Melky Cabrera (.296, 2 HR, 8 RBI, .373 OBP) and RF Adam Eaton (.294, 1 HR, 6 RBI, .371 OBP) lead the club with .296 and .294 averages, respectively. 3B Todd Frazier (.214, 7 HR, 18 RBI, .293 OBP) hasn’t racked up the hits in his first season with the Sox, but he’s supplied the power. 2B Brett Lawrie (.284, 4 HR, 10 RBI, .382 OBP) is second on the club in long balls.

Cabrera has faced Buchholz 31 times, but only has seven hits off of him—although one of those hits was a homer. Austin Jackson (.224, 0 HR, 8 RBI, .275 OBP)—who is 5-for-19 with a homer and two doubles—and Lawrie (3-for-28) have struggled to hit the 2013 World Series champion.

C Dioner Navarro (.172, 2 HR, 9 RBI, .206 OBP) is 5-for-18 with a double and three RBIs against him. For his career, Buchholz is 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA against the White Sox in eight career starts. Chicago’s bullpen has been utterly brilliant thus far, posting a microscopic 1.58 ERA.
