Preview: Braves at Rockies
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

Freddie Freeman put together a strong opening six weeks in 2017 before a fractured wrist sidelined him for two months, and the first baseman again is off to a great start as the Atlanta Braves open a nine-game road trip Friday at the Colorado Rockies. Freeman hit .421 in helping the Braves win four of their first six games, and enters Friday leading or close to the major-league lead in runs scored (nine), RBIs (nine), walks (10) and on-base percentage (.621).

Part of the reason for Atlanta’s strong start is Freeman is getting help from some surprising sources, including left fielder Preston Tucker (two homers, eight RBIs in 21 at-bats) and third baseman Ryan Flaherty (10-for-23 with four doubles for a career .220 hitter). Colorado capped a 4-3 road trip to start the season with a 3-1 victory Thursday in San Diego, taking advantage of three walks and an error in a three-run ninth. Second baseman D.J. LeMahieu singled home two runs in the ninth and finished 2-for-4, raising his average to .320. Center fielder Charlie Blackmon also collected two hits and brings a slash line of .345/.406/.828 into the opener of the three-game series.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS South (Atlanta), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Brandon McCarthy (1-0, 3.38 ERA) vs. Rockies RH German Marquez (0-0, 0.00)

McCarthy benefited from a huge uprising by the Braves offense to win his Atlanta debut Saturday, a 15-2 thumping of the Philadelphia in which he gave up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. He pitched well for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season before a variety of injuries limited his availability in the second half, but McCarthy posted a 3.45 ERA in spring training. The 34-year-old logged a 12.60 ERA in two appearances against the Rockies last season.

Marquez struggled with his control in his first start Saturday against Arizona, walking four hitters and giving up four hits but no earned runs over five innings. The 23-year-old broke through last season in establishing himself as a key part of the Rockies rotation, going 11-7 with a 4.39 ERA in 29 starts. Marquez, who makes his first career appearance against the Braves, is 7-3 with a 4.29 ERA in 16 career appearances at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado relievers allowed one run on two hits in three innings Thursday, giving the bullpen a 5.33 ERA through seven games.

2. The Braves hope 3B Johan Camargo (oblique) and C Kurt Suzuki (hand bruise) will return at some point in the series.

3. Atlanta entered Thursday leading the majors in runs scored (48) and batting average (.297).

PREDICTION: Rockies 6, Braves 5

Preview: Royals at Indians
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The Cleveland Indians struggled to uncork their offense during the final two contests of a season-opening six-game road trip. After totaling four runs and eight hits in back-to-back losses, the Indians hope their bats are active Friday as they begin a 10-game homestand with the opener of a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals.

"We can definitely improve. It's just a matter of us continuing to work, continuing to take good at-bats the right way, continuing to do your pregame stuff the right way," said Francisco Lindor, who batted .307 with five homers, 13 RBIs and 10 runs scored versus Kansas City last season. Cleveland, which boasted an impressive 49-32 mark at Progressive Field in 2017, has limped out of the box with losses in four of six overall to start the season and failed to record a hit during all four extra innings of Wednesday's 3-2 setback to the Los Angeles Angels. Kansas City's early season offense isn't drawing rave reviews either as the club has mustered two runs in two games that were sandwiched around a pair of weather-related postponements. Mike Moustakas joins Cheslor Cuthbert and Jon Jay with a team-leading four hits, although he has batted .130 in 23 career at-bats versus Friday starter Carlos Carrasco.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network; FS Kansas City, STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (0-1, 11.25 ERA) vs. Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (1-0, 7.94)

Fears of a drop in Duffy's velocity were realized on Opening Day as his fastball averaged 91.2 mph - and the results weren't pretty, as he was taken deep three times during a five-run fourth inning in a 14-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The 29-year-old, who yielded 13 homers in 146 1/3 innings last season, was left to lament that performance as his scheduled start against Detroit on Wednesday was postponed because of inclement weather. Duffy posted an 0-3 mark with a 4.60 ERA in three meetings with Cleveland last season to drop to 2-6 lifetime against the club, although offseason acquisition Edwin Encarnacion is batting only .154 in 13 at-bats him.

Carrasco also struggled with the home-run ball as he was taken deep twice and permitted five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-5 triumph over Seattle. The 31-year-old Venezuelan only served up one homer in three appearances versus Kansas City last season, posting a 2-1 record to improve his career mark against the club to 9-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 22 games. Whit Merrifield is 6-for-12 versus Carrasco, but Alex Gordon (.152 in 33 at-bats) has struggled mightily against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland plans to activate two-time All-Star OF Michael Brantley (ankle) from the 10-day disabled list prior to Friday's game, manager Terry Francona said.

2. Kansas City RF Jorge Soler is hitless in 29 consecutive at-bats dating back to last season.

3. Indians RF Lonnie Chisenhall started the season with a four-game hitting streak and leads the team with a .235 batting average.

PREDICTION: Indians 5, Royals 2

Preview: Orioles at Yankees
Gracenote
Apr 6, 2018

The Baltimore Orioles attempt to win consecutive games for the first time this season when they visit the New York Yankees on Friday for the second contest of their four-game set. Baltimore, which hadn't won since its season opener, halted its five-game losing streak Thursday as it staged a five-run rally in the seventh inning en route to a 5-2 triumph.

Adam Jones ignited the uprising with a two-run homer and Trey Mancini ended it with a two-run single as the Orioles posted their first road win of 2018 after being on the wrong end of a three-game sweep in Houston early in the week. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge continued to terrorize Baltimore pitching as he hit his 12th career homer against the Orioles on Thursday - his highest total versus any club. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year, Judge has belted 58 shots in 189 career games - making him the fastest to reach that total in major-league history. New York was limited to two runs and four hits in Thursday's loss after totaling 18 of each in its two-game home sweep of Tampa Bay.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, MASN (Baltimore), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (0-1, 13.50 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (0-0, 1.80)

Gausman struggled in his first outing of the year as he was tagged for six runs and seven hits over four innings in a loss to Minnesota on Sunday. The 27-year-old native of Colorado, who allowed a career-high 29 home runs last season, served up three in the setback but managed to record five strikeouts. Gausman is 7-5 with a 3.53 ERA against New York in his career despite yielding 12 runs on 16 hits and eight walks over 9 1/3 frames in two starts at Yankee Stadium last campaign.

Sabathia pitched well in his season debut at Toronto on Saturday but settled for a no-decision. The 37-year-old Californian worked five innings, allowing two runs - one earned - and five hits with four strikeouts and two walks as he threw 54 of his 84 pitches for strikes. Sabathia is 19-10 with two shutouts and a 3.56 ERA in 41 career starts against Baltimore but surrendered 15 runs and 23 hits over 17 frames in three turns last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Judge is 6-for-12 with three homers and five RBIs against Gausman.

2. Jones has gone deep five times and driven in 15 runs versus Sabathia during his career.

3. New York OF Trayce Thompson was claimed off waivers by Oakland on Thursday - two days after being acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the same fashion.

PREDICTION: Yankees 8, Orioles 3

Preview: Reds at Pirates
Gracenote
Apr 6, 2018

Gregory Polanco has recorded just six hits in six games to open the season but is making them count, hitting five for extra bases while collecting nine RBIs to help the Pittsburgh Pirates to a rousing 5-1 start. The 26-year-old outfielder looks to record another productive performance when the Pirates host the struggling Cincinnati Reds on Friday for the second contest of the four-game series between the National League Central Division rivals.

Polanco forged a tie with a sacrifice fly and belted a go-ahead, two-run homer in his 500th major league game Thursday as Pittsburgh defeated the Reds 5-2 to rebound from its first loss of the season a day earlier against Minnesota. Luis Castillo will try to contain Polanco as he takes the mound for Cincinnati against Trevor Williams, who did not allow a hit in his first appearance of the season. The Reds have had two games postponed in the early going due to poor weather conditions and gave up 26 runs in their four losses, sandwiched around a 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Scooter Gennett is off to a strong start with the bat (9-for-21) and Adam Duvall belted his second homer Thursday to give him a team-leading six RBIs.

TV: 7.05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Luis Castillo (0-1, 10.80 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Trevor Williams (1-0, 0.00)

Castillo allowed six runs and six hits - two homers - with six strikeouts and one walk over five innings in his season debut against Washington on Saturday. The 25-year-old Dominican, who was acquired from Miami in January 2017 in the trade for Dan Straily, went 3-7 with a 3.12 ERA and 98 strikeouts over 89 1/3 innings last year. David Freese is 2-for-5 versus Castillo, who went 0-1 while yielding three runs and recording 14 strikeouts over 11 frames in two starts against Pittsburgh last season.

Williams did not give up a hit in six scoreless innings at Detroit on Sunday to record the victory, but he walked five and his pitch count rose to 85. The 25-year-old Arizona State product went 4-5 with a 3.35 ERA after the All-Star break last year as opposed to 3-4 with a 4.80 mark in the first half and was 3-3 with a 3.49 ERA at home overall. Gennett is 3-for-8 with a homer and Joey Votto 5-for-11 with three doubles against Williams, who was 1-0 with a 3.31 ERA in four appearances (two starts) versus the Reds in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Votto, who is just 3-for-19 without an RBI over his first five contests, is three walks away from becoming the second Red to reach 1,000 for his career.

2. Pittsburgh 1B Josh Bell has hit safely in all six games to start the season, going 9-for-24 with three runs, a homer and five RBIs.

3. Reds RF Scott Schebler (elbow), who is 4-for-12 with a home run in three games, could return Friday after missing the last two contests.

PREDICTION: Pirates 5, Reds 3

Preview: Blue Jays at Rangers
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The Toronto Blue Jays rebounded from a pair of franchise-worst offensive performances to start the season and put together a solid seven-game homestand. The Blue Jays will face a challenge to continue that momentum when they kick off a rugged nine-game road trip with the first of three against the Texas Rangers on Friday night at Globe Life Park.

After mustering only seven hits combined in their first two games, Toronto ripped off four consecutive victories, a streak that ended in Wednesday's 4-3 setback to the Chicago White Sox. "I think we're playing a pretty good brand of baseball," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "We've been swinging the bats. If a couple key guys in that lineup get some things going, we're going to be that much better." The Rangers dropped three of four to the Houston Astros to start the season before salvaging a split of a four-game set at Oakland as Shin-Soo Choo homered versus the Athletics for the second time in as many days. Adrian Beltre reached a pair of milestones in Thursday's 6-3 win, becoming the career hits leader among Latin-born players and moving into a tie for 24th place with Rickey Henderson (3,055) on the all-time list.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (0-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Matt Moore (0-1, 9.00)

Estrada had a strong season debut with seven innings of four-hit ball against the New York Yankees, but he was victimized for a pair of homers to account for the three runs against him. The long ball was an issue in 2017 for Estrada, who was taken deep a career-high 31 times. Estrada beat the Rangers with six innings of one-run ball on May 27 but was pounded for six runs over 3 2/3 innings a month later in Texas.

Moore had a forgettable performance in his debut with the Rangers, permitting four runs and seven hits over four innings against World Series champion Houston. Moore lost 15 games a year ago for the San Francisco Giants, but he has a solid track record against Toronto with a 5-2 record and 3.27 ERA in 10 starts. Russell Martin is 3-for-9 with two homers and six RBIs and Kendrys Morales is 3-for-5 with a home run versus Moore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers RF Nomar Mazara (.357) has multiple hits in half his eight games, including three in a row.

2. Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak, batting .385, was 10-for-25 with two homers against the Rangers in 2017.

3. Choo's homer Thursday was Texas' seventh of the season -- and first with a man on base.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 5, Rangers 4

Preview: Cubs at Brewers
Gracenote
Apr 6, 2018

Back-to-back shutouts are no reason for the Milwaukee Brewers to panic, as the Chicago Cubs showed them first-hand. The Brewers will try to follow the Cubs’ lead and break out of their offensive slump when the National League Central rivals continue their four-game series Friday in Milwaukee.

The Cubs had been blanked in two straight games before routing the Brewers 8-0 in the series opener. Every starting position player except slumping first baseman Anthony Rizzo recorded at least one hit for Chicago. Milwaukee continued its roller-coaster start, as Jesus Aguilar accounted for three of the team’s four hits a day after the Brewers were shut out on five hits in their series finale against St. Louis. Things went from bad to worse for the Brewers in the ninth inning Thursday as closer Corey Knebel allowed a two-run homer by Jason Heyward before suffering a left hamstring injury that will send him to the disabled list.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago Plus, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (0-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Brandon Woodruff (0-0, 5.40)

Hendricks was sharp in his season debut, holding Miami to one run and four hits with five strikeouts over six frames, but the Cubs lost in 17 innings. The 28-year-old has allowed three or fewer runs in 14 straight starts dating to July. Hendricks is 6-4 with a 2.77 ERA in 15 career turns against the Brewers, including a 4-1 mark and 2.31 ERA in eight outings at Miller Park.

Woodruff has made two relief appearances to stay sharp until the Brewers needed a fifth starter, allowing two runs and six hits over 3 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old went 2-3 with a 4.81 ERA in eight turns last season after being recalled from the minors in August. He faced the Cubs in his penultimate outing of 2017, allowing four runs and five hits over five frames in a no-decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs have scored 26 runs in their three wins and one in their three losses.

2. Brewers 3B Travis Shaw, who had hit safely in all six games before he went 0-for-3 and was ejected for arguing a called third strike on Thursday, is 4-for-12 with two homers versus Hendricks.

3. Milwaukee LF Christian Yelich sat out Thursday with a tight right oblique and remains day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Cubs 6, Brewers 3

Preview: Padres at Astros
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

Home cooking seems to be agreeing with Josh Reddick, who shook off a rough opening series on the road and appears to be every bit as comfortable at Minute Maid Park as he was last season. The red-hot outfielder looks to remain locked in at the plate a bit longer when his Houston Astros begin interleague play Friday with the first of three games against the visiting San Diego Padres.

Reddick, who batted .344 at home in his first season with Houston in 2017, went hitless in seven at-bats during the Astros' four-game road series with the Texas Rangers last weekend. The 31-year-old picked up where he left off upon his return to Minute Maid Park in the Astros' three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles, however, finishing the series 6-for-10 - including a two-homer, six-RBI explosion Tuesday and a three-hit performance in Wednesday's 3-2 victory. Such efforts have been few and far between for the Padres, who concluded their 1-6 season-opening homestand with a 3-1 setback versus the Colorado Rockies on Thursday. San Diego has hit a respectable nine homers and is hitting .302 with runners in scoring position, but a .220 team batting average overall is one of the reasons the Padres find themselves tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the worst record in the majors (1-6).

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Luis Perdomo (0-1, 11.25 ERA) vs. Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (1-0, 3.38)

Perdomo struck out seven but was otherwise ineffective over four innings Saturday, giving up five runs on seven hits and four walks versus the Milwaukee Brewers while recording only one groundball out after leading the National League in ground-ball rate in 2017. The 24-year-old is coming off a campaign during which he went 2-6 and sported a .299 batting average away from home in 13 turns. Perdomo has never opposed the Astros, but he has struggled against Reddick (4-for-5, home run) - the only Houston hitter he has faced.

McCullers remained in the game long enough to get the win Saturday against the Rangers after he was struck in the ankle by a comebacker, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 10 across 5 1/3 innings. The Florida native was equally dominant during exhibition play, going 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in six appearances (five starts), fanning 24 over 21 frames. McCullers has never faced San Diego, but he has baffled A.J. Ellis (1-for-6), Chase Headley (0-for-7, five strikeouts) and Eric Hosmer (1-for-6).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros' six wins through seven games matches the 1987 and 1988 teams for the best seven-game start in club history.

2. Hosmer is 1-for-11 with five strikeouts over his last three contests after stringing together three straight two-hit games.

3. Houston SS Carlos Correa (toe) rested Wednesday, but manager A.J. Hinch told reporters he expects the one-time All-Star to return to the lineup Friday.

PREDICTION: Astros 7, Padres 1

Preview: Athletics at Angels
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The Los Angeles Angels entered the season with the most intriguing player in the league in Japanese two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani and it's hardly a coincidence that the club is off to its best start in 11 years. Winners of five of their first seven, the Angels continue a six-game homestand when they host the Oakland Athletics in a rematch of the season-opening series.

Ohtani pitched six strong innings to beat Oakland in last Sunday's series finale as Los Angeles took three of four and followed that up by homering in back-to-back wins over Cleveland on Tuesday and Wednesday. “It’s really impressive if you think about it. All the pressure is on him. And he’s just thrown that out of the way and he’s just playing ball," said Angels infielder Zack Cozart, who hit a walk-off homer in Wednesday's win. "He’s a special talent. No doubt about it. We’re glad to have him.” The Athletics managed only three wins on their season-opening eight-game homestand and will hit the road for eight in a row - facing both Los Angeles teams before heading to Seattle. Jed Lowrie hit safely in three of four games versus the Angels before going 6-for-15 with three doubles and five RBIs in a four-game set against Texas.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Oakland), FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Daniel Gossett (0-1, 9.00 ERA) vs. Angels RH Parker Bridwell (2017: 10-3, 3.64)

Gossett's first start of the season was overshadowed by Ohtani's major-league pitching debut, but he allowed four runs on six hits, including three doubles, in four-plus innings. The 25-year-old gave up three runs in 6 2/3 innings in his lone start against the Angels last season, when he lost 11 of 15 decisions and was tagged for 21 homers in 91 1/3 innings. Opponents batted a healthy .306 against Gossett in 2017.

Expected to start the season at Triple-A Salt Lake City, Bridwell was summoned back to the majors to make Friday's start after Matt Shoemaker landed on the disabled list. Despite the impressive record last year, Bridwell was rocked in back-to-back starts in a six-day span against Oakland, lasting three innings in each and surrendering a combined 13 runs and 13 hits. Matt Olson homered twice in four at-bats versus Bridwell.

WALK-OFFS

1. Ohtani, who is scheduled to pitch Sunday, is 6-for-14 with two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored.

2. Athletics 3B Matt Chapman has hit safely in seven straight, including four multiple-hit games in a row.

3. Angels SS Andrelton Simmons has started two straight seasons with a seven-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Angels 6, Athletics 4

Preview: Dodgers at Giants
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The Los Angeles Dodgers' offense sputtered out of the blocks in the first series against the San Francisco Giants and is hitting the skids once again heading into Friday's opener of a three-game set at AT&T Park. The Dodgers mustered seven hits en route to dropping back-to-back 1-0 losses to the Giants, with Joe Panik belting a solo homer in both contests for San Francisco.

Panik, who has slugged a career-high 10 homers on two occasions, added his third of the young season in Tuesday's 6-5 setback to Seattle before seeing his five-game hitting streak come to a halt the following day as San Francisco ended a three-game skid with a 10-1 romp over the Mariners. The 27-year-old aims to get back on track versus Friday starter Kenta Maeda, against whom he is 5-for-12 with a homer and two RBIs. Los Angeles' offense is in need of a jolt after being shut out for the third time in seven outings, as Arizona capped a three-game series sweep with a 3-0 triumph on Wednesday. Matt Kemp's bloop double with two outs in the fifth inning accounted for the Dodgers' lone hit, and he's 1-for-5 in his career versus Friday starter Derek Holland.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), NBC Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Giants LH Derek Holland (0-1, 5.40)

Maeda ended the Dodgers' first skid of the season on the strength of his second double-digit strikeout performance of his career. The 29-year-old Japanese star noted the success of his four-seam fastball in fanning 10 batters and scattering five hits over five innings in a 5-0 victory over the Giants on Saturday. Former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen (10 at-bats) and Hunter Pence (13) have each struck out five times against Maeda, who owns a 4-1 record and 4.55 ERA in six career starts versus the Giants.

While Maeda was masterful, Holland endured significant problems as he permitted five runs (three earned) and walked three in five innings to take the loss. The 31-year-old has struggled in his last 11 outings dating back to last season with the Chicago White Sox, posting a 2-6 mark in that stretch. Justin Turner is 1-for-4 in limited appearances versus Holland, who has dropped both of his career encounters to the Dodgers -- albeit separated by nearly nine years.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles C Yasmani Grandal recorded multi-hit performances in two of the first three meetings with San Francisco, but is 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his last two games.

2. Giants C Buster Posey is 6-for-14 with two doubles and three runs scored during his four-game hitting streak.

3. The Dodgers claimed RHP Alec Asher from Baltimore on Thursday and promptly optioned the 26-year-old to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 3, Giants 2
