Preview: Brewers at Pirates
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

The Milwaukee Brewers' rally fell short in the finale of a homestand, sending them into Monday's opener of a three-game series at the Pittsburgh Pirates on a sour note. The Brewers took the opener of a three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies by a 13-2 margin before falling Saturday and then dropping a 10-9 decision in the last meeting.

The Brewers scored four times in the ninth and saw Christian Yelich's long drive caught for the final out, capping a 3-3 homestand. "We thought he went deep, the way it looked off the bat," first baseman Eric Thames - who slugged two homers in the loss - told reporters. "We were close to tying that game." The Pirates won three in a row before Sunday's 8-6 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. They will try to bounce back behind struggling right-hander Trevor Williams, who takes on Milwaukee's Jhoulys Chacin in the opener.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-1, 3.32 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Trevor Williams (5-4, 4.38)

Three of Chacin's last five outings have been of the scoreless variety, including a six-inning effort in a win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. He has won his last six decisions and opponents are hitting .227 overall against the 30-year-old. Chacin limited the Pirates to one run in six innings in their one encounter this season to improve to 2-3 with a 4.76 ERA in seven career matchups.

Williams lasted just three innings in each of his last two starts, giving up 12 runs (seven earned) and 10 hits with four walks in that span. That stretch extended his streak of outings without a quality start to five, during which the Arizona State product is 0-2 with an 8.57 ERA. Orlando Arcia and Domingo Santana are both 3-for-6 against Williams, who has a 3.29 ERA in three career games (two starts) against Milwaukee.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates RF Gregory Polanco was 3-for-28 over a span of 11 games before going 3-for-3 on Sunday.

2. Brewers 1B Jesus Aguilar was 4-for-9 with two homers and five RBIs in the series against the Phillies.

3. Pittsburgh C Francisco Cervelli is 0-for-13 over a five-game stretch.

PREDICTION: Brewers 6, Pirates 4

Jun 18, 2018

After wrapping a homestand with a victory to halt a season-high four-game slide, the St. Louis Cardinals take to the road as they begin a seven-game trek on Monday with the first of three contests against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals went 2-4 during their six-game stretch at Busch Stadium, beginning it with a win over San Diego and ending it with Sunday's 5-0 triumph over the Chicago Cubs.

Matt Carpenter, who has hit safely in nine of his last 11 contests, belted a solo homer and Tommy Pham scored twice while extending his hitting streak to 11 games with a single as St. Louis saw Yadier Molina tie the major-league record for games caught for one team (1,756), which was set by Hall-of-Famer Gabby Hartnett of the Cubs. Philadelphia aims for its first three-game winning streak since mid-May after withstanding a ninth-inning rally and hanging on for a 10-9 victory at Milwaukee on Sunday. Maikel Franco went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs for the Phillies, who have won consecutive series for the first time since going 8-1 against Miami, Cincinnati and Tampa Bay from April 5-15. Odubel Herrera collected three hits and scored three runs while Nick Williams delivered a two-run single to improve to 6-for-13 with four RBIs over his last five contests.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), NBCS Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Miles Mikolas (7-2, 2.43 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (4-6, 4.25)

After going 6-0 over the first two months of the season, Mikolas has lost two of his three starts in June - including a setback against San Diego on Tuesday in which he allowed three runs and six hits over six innings. The 29-year-old Floridian has yet to lose on the road this year, going 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA in six turns. Mikolas made his only career appearance against the Phillies in relief on May 11, 2012, when he yielded two runs on two hits and as many walks in one inning at Philadelphia while with San Diego.

Pivetta's losing streak reached four starts on Wednesday, when he was tagged for six runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings against Colorado. The 25-year-old Canadian has lost back-to-back turns at home after scattering four hits over seven scoreless frames versus Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park on May 21. Pivetta made two starts against St. Louis as a rookie last season, going 0-1 while giving up seven runs in 11 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Herrera has gone 7-for-18 with two homers and three RBIs over his last four games.

2. St. Louis 1B Jose Martinez is expected to return from paternity leave on Monday while RHP Greg Holland (hip) will accompany the team on its road trip and likely be activated from the disabled list during the trek.

3. Philadelphia on Saturday placed Luis Garcia (wrist) on the 10-day disabled list, optioned Mark Leiter Jr. to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled fellow RHPs Yacksel Rios and Jake Thompson from the IronPigs.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 6, Phillies 2

Preview: Yankees at Nationals
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

Washington Nationals rookie Juan Soto launched a titanic blast to highlight his two-homer performance in last week's encounter with the New York Yankees. The 19-year-old Soto will get another look at the visiting Yankees (46-21) on Monday when the clubs resume a suspended game from May 15 that was tied at 3 in the sixth inning before playing a full contest as a result of a postponement from May 16.

Soto, who was playing with Double-A Harrisburg during that May series, would love to recapture the form from prior to this past weekend's series sweep at the hands of Toronto, against which he went 2-for-13 with six strikeouts. Fellow outfielder Bryce Harper is mired in a 1-for-20 stretch with eight strikeouts in his last six games for the Nationals (37-31) and is 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his career versus Sonny Gray, who will start Monday's latter contest. Aaron Hicks belted his second homer of New York's four-game series versus Tampa Bay, but its bid for a four-game sweep was averted by Sunday's 3-1 loss. While neither team divulged the starting pitcher for the suspended game, Washington's Erick Fredde will oppose Gray in the rematch of Wednesday's tilt in the Bronx.

TV: 5:05 p.m. ET (suspended game), MLB Network, YES (New York), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Sonny Gray (4-4, 4.98 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Erick Fedde (0-1, 5.91)

Gray has yet to record a decision while posting a 4.74 ERA in three career encounters versus Washington, including his four-run, seven-hit performance in five innings in last week's meeting. The 28-year-old served up a three-run homer to Soto in the fourth inning and struck out just one batter, his lowest total since a 3 1/3-frame stint versus Toronto on April 20. Trea Turner (3-for-5) and Adam Eaton (4-for-11) have gotten their licks in on Gray, although Harper is 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Fedde will get his second straight look at the Yankees after surrendering two homers and four runs total over five innings on Wednesday. The 2014 first-round pick will make his sixth major-league start and third this season as he pitches in place of injured fireballer Stephen Strasburg. Fedde posted a 3-2 mark with a 4.76 ERA in 11 starts with Triple-A Syracuse before getting recalled last week prior to the last meeting with New York.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York SS Didi Gregorius, who had six hits versus Tampa Bay over the weekend, belted two homers against Washington in a 3-0 win on Tuesday.

2. Nationals CF Michael A. Taylor went 5-for-7 with four stolen bases and two runs scored in his last two games.

3. Yankees OF Giancarlo Stanton had three singles in Wednesday's loss to Washington and also had a hit and run scored in the suspended game.

PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Yankees 3 (suspended)
PREDICTION: Yankees 4, Nationals 2 (rescheduled)

Preview: White Sox at Indians

Jun 17, 2018

The Cleveland Indians avoided a sweep Sunday and will try to build off the much-needed victory when they open a three-game series with the visiting Chicago White Sox on Monday. The Indians had dropped five straight to the Minnesota Twins - including the first two in their weekend set - before picking up a 4-1 win in the finale Sunday afternoon.

Yan Gomes' three-run double was the difference for Cleveland, which has won eight of its last 11 at home. Yonder Alonso had four hits in a four-game split against the White Sox last week and is expected to return from the Family Medical Emergency List for the Indians. Beginning with a loss in the final game of last week's encounter with Cleveland, Chicago has dropped four in a row. It left eight runners on base in a 3-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago Plus, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Dylan Covey (3-1, 2.29 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (5-5, 2.69)

Covey is 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA since being recalled from the minors May 19, and he matched his longest start with seven strong innings in a win over the Indians on Wednesday. That allowed him to get some revenge for his shortest outing at Cleveland on May 28, when he let up five runs (two earned) in 4 1/3 frames. Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez are a combined 7-for-11 against the 26-year-old Covey.

Bauer has struck out at least 11 batters in each of his last four starts, including 12 in a tough loss at Chicago on Wednesday. He held the White Sox to three runs in 7 2/3 innings in the setback while yielding just four hits. Yolmer Sanchez is 1-for-22 with 11 strikeouts against the 27-year-old Bauer, who is 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA in his career against the White Sox.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox C Kevan Smith has three straight two-hit performances and is hitting .441 in nine games.

2. Gomes is 6-for-13 with six RBIs during a four-game hitting streak.

3. Cleveland is 19-13 against division opponents and 12-18 against all other AL opponents.

PREDICTION: Indians 4, White Sox 2

Preview: Dodgers at Cubs
Gracenote
Jun 18, 2018

The Los Angeles Dodgers hope to continue their ascent toward first place in the National League West when they open a six-game road trip Monday against the surging Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers suffered a 4-1 loss against San Francisco on Sunday to finish a 6-2 homestand but have posted 21 wins in their last 28 contests to pull within 1 1/2 games of Arizona for the top spot in the division.

Joc Pederson is among the major-league leaders with seven homers in June while going 13-for-30 and Kike Hernandez has hit safely in six consecutive games (7-for-19) for Los Angeles, which owns the best OPS (.899) in baseball this month. Kenta Maeda makes his second start since missing two weeks with a hip injury for the Dodgers, while the Cubs counter with Tyler Chatwood in the series opener between the two teams with the most regular-season wins since 2015. Chicago missed a chance to move into first place in the NL Central on Sunday, managing just four hits in a 5-0 loss at St. Louis to spoil its hopes for a sweep, but the team is 14-6 in in its last 20 contests. Chicago could be without infielder Javier Baez for the series opener after he was hit by a pitch in the setback and left with a left elbow contusion that will require X-rays.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (4-4, 3.61 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Tyler Chatwood (3-5, 4.12)

Maeda put together his two best starts of the season - allowing four hits and striking out 20 over 14 2/3 innings - in late May but is winless in his last two turns. The 30-year-old native of Japan, who recorded only three strikeouts on those two outings, gave up two runs on five hits and three walks over five frames in a no-decision versus Texas on Wednesday. Maeda, who will be facing the Cubs for the first time, has registered 69 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings this year and is limiting right-handed hitters to a .196 average.

Chatwood is winless in his last six outings after giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings in a loss at Milwaukee on Tuesday. The 28-year-old Californian has not completed more than 5 1/3 frames in any of his last eight starts and has posted a 5.19 ERA over the last two months after producing a 2.83 mark in April. Yasmani Grandal is 6-for-11 with a homer versus Chatwood, who is 5-9 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 career appearances (14 starts) against the Dodgers.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago OF Albert Almora Jr. recorded a pair of hits in Sunday's loss and is 18-for-50 with six RBIs this month.

2. Los Angeles 3B Justin Turner has hit safely in his last five contests, notching two doubles and a home run in that span.

3. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo has gone five games without an RBI after recording 23 in his previous 22 contests with an at-bat.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 5, Cubs 3

Preview: Rays at Astros
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

The red-hot Houston Astros look to surpass their top win streak from last season when they bid for their 12th consecutive victory on Monday in the opener of a three-game series versus the visiting Tampa Bay Rays (33-38). The Astros (48-25) completed a perfect 10-game road trip with sweeps against Texas, Oakland and Kansas City heading into the opener of their nine-game homestand.

Carlos Correa homered for the third time in six outings to highlight his fourth multi-hit performance in that span in Houston's 7-4 triumph over Kansas City on Sunday. The 23-year-old also has eight RBIs and as many runs scored in his last six games while hitting safely in eight of his last nine overall. While the Astros' sizzling stretch has them atop the American League West, the Rays snapped a three-game skid by scoring all of their runs in the second to post a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees. Matt Duffy's two-run single highlighted his eighth third-hit performance of the season heading into a tilt versus Monday starter Gerrit Cole, against whom he is just 1-for-6 in his career.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FS Sports Sun (Tampa Bay), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Ryne Stanek (1-1, 2.55 ERA) vs. Astros RH Gerrit Cole (8-1, 2.40)

Stanek will get the nod as the Rays dip into the bullpen for a spot start on Monday, per the Tampa Bay Times. The 26-year-old has fared well in his last six trips to the mound, scattering three hits and striking out 11 batters over eight innings in that stretch. Stanek subdued the New York Yankees on Saturday, permitting just one hit while fanning one in 1 1/3 frames of a no-decision.

Cole won his third straight start and improved to 6-0 in his last eight trips to the mound on Wednesday despite allowing four runs on six hits in as many innings of a 13-5 triumph at Oakland. The 27-year-old was taken deep on two occasions for the third time in his last six outings after yielding just three homers in his previous five starts. Carlos Gomez is 5-for-12 in his career versus Cole, but the right-hander has dominated Adeiny Hechavarria (0-for-14).

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay C Wilson Ramos has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.

2. Houston C Evan Gattis has 17 hits - including six homers -- 21 RBIs and nine runs scored in his last 11 contests.

3. Rays DH C.J. Cron is 0-for-18 with 15 strikeouts in his last six games.

PREDICTION: Astros 9, Rays 2

Preview: Rangers at Royals
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

The Kansas City Royals sit in last place in the American League Central and are not showing any sign that a turnaround might be in the works. The Royals will try to snap a six-game slide and win for just the second time in their last 14 contests when they host the Texas Rangers on Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

Kansas City had the misfortune of running into the defending champion Houston Astros over the weekend and were outscored 24-9 in the three-game series. The Royals pitching staff gave up at least seven runs in each of the last four games and leads the majors in runs allowed (398) while owning the worst team ERA (5.37). The Rangers are only slightly better on the mound and are fighting through their own rough stretch with losses in seven of the last nine games, but won the last two against Colorado at home. Texas will try to keep Kansas City in the loss column with ageless veteran Bartolo Colon while the Royals send fellow right-hander Ian Kennedy to the mound in search of a rare win.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Texas), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Bartolo Colon (3-4, 4.94 ERA) vs. Royals RH Ian Kennedy (1-6, 5.13)

Colon was hammered last time out at the Los Angeles Dodgers, serving up eight runs on nine hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings to suffer the loss. The 45-year-old was reached for at least six earned runs in three of his last five outings and has served up 19 home runs in 74 2/3 innings. Colon posted a quality start against the Royals on May 26, yielding three runs on five hits and a pair of walks across seven frames without factoring in the decision.

Kennedy posted his best start of the season on Tuesday against Cincinnati but could not get enough run support to earn the win and was left out of the decision despite scattering three hits across eight scoreless innings. The California native is winless in his last 12 starts but yielded just one run in his last two turns. Kennedy went up against Colon on May 26 and was also left out of the decision while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over five frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals 2B Whit Merrifield is day-to-day with a knee contusion after fouling a ball off his left knee on Sunday.

2. Texas SS Elvis Andrus (broken right elbow) is expected to come off the disabled list on Monday.

3. Kansas City SS Alcides Escobar is just 2-for-41 over his last 11 games.

Preview: Mets at Rockies
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

Two teams that have struggled mightily following promising starts meet Monday as the New York Mets visit the Colorado Rockies for the opener of their four-game series. The Rockies have lost 12 of their last 16 games and hit a new low Sunday, when closer Wade Davis gave up four runs in the ninth inning of a 13-12 interleague loss to Texas.

The Mets improved to 2-4 on their 10-game road trip with Sunday’s 5-3 win over Arizona after staging a four-run rally in the ninth, which was highlighted by Brandon Nimmo’s two-out homer and Asdrubal Cabrera’s solo blast. Nimmo continued to impress with three hits from the leadoff spot while right fielder Jay Bruce returned to the starting lineup after missing three games with a sore back and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Colorado dropped two of three to the Rangers over the weekend despite recording 15 hits in Sunday's loss - including three from Gerardo Parra, who doubled twice and collected four RBIs. The Rockies are 4-11 this month and need better results from a bullpen that was viewed as a strength early in the season but faltered again Sunday, allowing seven runs over 3 1/3 innings.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (4-2, 1.55 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (4-1, 4.48)

DeGrom leads the majors with a 0.87 ERA since April 21, registering 83 strikeouts against 17 walks in 10 starts during that stretch. The Floridian was a hard-luck loser on Wednesday, when he allowed one run with seven strikeouts and no walks over seven innings in a 2-0 setback against Atlanta. Nolan Arenado is 2-for-14 against deGrom, who turns 30 on Tuesday and owns a 3-0 record and 0.99 ERA in five career starts against Colorado.

Anderson matched his longest outing of the season on Wednesday, allowing one run while striking out six over seven innings in a 7-2 win over Philadelphia. The 28-year-old native of Las Vegas has gone 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA in five starts at Coors Field this season, compared to 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA in nine road outings. Anderson is making his first start against the Mets since settling for a no-decision on July 28, 2016, when he allowed one run over six frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Mets have scored a total of six runs over deGrom’s last five outings.

2. Colorado has lost eight consecutive home games.

3. The Mets activated Jeurys Familia, who picked up the win on Sunday, from the 10-day disabled list and optioned fellow RHP Jacob Rhame to Triple-A Las Vegas.

PREDICTION: Mets 8, Rockies 3

Preview: Diamondbacks at Angels
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

The Los Angeles Angels and Arizona Diamondbacks both thought they would end the weekend on high notes, only to watch late leads slip away. Both teams will try to bounce back from tough losses when the Angels host the Diamondbacks on Monday in the opener of their two-game interleague series.

Los Angeles is trying to find enough healthy arms to get within shouting distance of Houston and Seattle in the American League West, but the bullpen is showing signs of wear. The Angels' relief corps surrendered a lead in Saturday's 6-4 setback and faltered again the following day, wasting eight strong innings from starter Andrew Heaney as it allowed two runs in the ninth to tie it before falling 6-5 in 11 innings. The Diamondbacks had to settle for a split of a four-game series against the New York Mets this weekend when closer Brad Boxberger served up four runs and four hits - two homers - in the ninth inning of a 5-3 setback on Sunday. Arizona ace Zack Greinke will try to keep it out of Boxberger's hands on Monday, while Jaime Barria gets the call for the Angels.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Arizona, FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (5-5, 3.87 ERA) vs. Angels RH Jaime Barria (5-2, 2.61)

Greinke suffered a loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, when he surrendered five runs on as many hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings. The veteran has not completed seven frames in any of his last six outings and could not make it through six in either of the last two turns. Grienke is facing the Angels for the first time since Sept. 7, 2015, when he notched a win after allowing three runs in six innings.

Barria had a string of five straight starts without a loss come to an end at Seattle on Tuesday, when he was charged with three runs - two earned - and eight hits in five innings. The 21-year-old Panamanian kept Texas scoreless over six frames in his previous major-league outing on June 1. Barria is making his third career interleague start after picking up a win at Colorado on May 9 and losing to San Francisco on April 22.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt is 25-for-50 with six home runs over his last 12 games.

2. Angels CF Mike Trout is 13-for-19 with four homers over his last six contests.

3. Los Angeles LF Justin Upton (Back) returned to the lineup Sunday after missing one game and went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 5, Angels 4

Preview: Marlins at Giants
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

The Miami Marlins are winners of five of their last seven games, which includes a series victory over the San Francisco Giants at home. The Giants will try to get some revenge when they play host to the Marlins in the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

Miami began its nine-game road trip by taking two of three from the major league-worst Baltimore Orioles over the weekend but fly across the country with a sour taste after suffering a 10-4 loss on Sunday. The positive for the Marlins was an end to the power drought from first baseman Justin Bour, who homered twice after going 19 straight games without a blast. A pair of home runs could be all it takes to get the better of the Giants, who avoided a three-game sweep at the rival Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend with a 4-1 victory on Sunday but totaled seven runs in the series. San Francisco will try to get the bats going on Monday against Marlins lefty Caleb Smith while countering with rookie Andrew Suarez.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Miami), NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Caleb Smith (5-6, 3.75 ERA) vs. Giants LH Andrew Suarez (2-4, 4.92)

Smith is making his second consecutive start against San Francisco after allowing three runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings at home on Wednesday without factoring in the decision. The Texas native surrendered three or fewer earned runs in eight of his last 10 outings and is limiting opponents to a .213 batting average. Smith owns 83 strikeouts in 72 total innings while yielding just 56 hits.

Suarez went up against Smith on Wednesday and also did not factor in the decision while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks across five innings. The 25-year-old failed to complete six innings in four of his last five starts and is 1-1 in that span. Suarez is stronger at home, where he owns a 1-2 record with a 3.55 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Giants reportedly signed No. 2 overall draft pick C Joey Bart to a $7.03 million bonus.

2. Marlins INF Miguel Rojas (hand) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

3. San Francisco LHP Will Smith did not allow a run in any of his last nine appearances, spanning nine innings.

PREDICTION: Giants 5, Marlins 4
