Preview: Yankees at Tigers (Game 1)
Gracenote
Jun 3, 2018

The New York Yankees have nearly been unstoppable since splitting their first 18 games this season, although Mother Nature has done her best to cool off the club. After being postponed for the seventh time in 2018, the Yankees (37-17) will visit the Detroit Tigers (28-31) on Monday for a doubleheader that came to pass after the teams had a game postponed on April 14 and again the following day.

Miguel Andujar, who has hit safely in 16 of his last 19 games, had a triple and a double while scoring twice in New York's 8-6 win over Detroit on April 13. Aaron Hicks had an inside-the-park homer to go along with a conventional one in that contest, and enters Monday's tilts after going 6-for-11 with three RBIs and as many runs scored in his last three games after an 0-for-13 stretch. While the Yankees have won 28 of 36 to keep the heat on Boston in the American League East, Detroit sustained its first loss since a Canada Goose became a beloved fixture at Comerica Park on Wednesday. Leonys Martin homered to extend his hitting streak to five games in Sunday's 8-4 setback versus Toronto and will bid to atone for his earlier miscue against the Yankees, when he missed a carom off the wall to allow Hicks to circle the bases.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Luis Severino (8-1, 2.31 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Drew VerHagen (0-1, 6.30)

Severino matched a season high with 11 strikeouts in Wednesday's 5-3 win versus Houston, improving to 6-0 with a slim 1.95 ERA since being tagged for his lone loss of the season. The 24-year-old Dominican has limited the opposition to three runs or fewer in each of his last nine starts, although he has been taken deep in each of his last two trips to the mound. Nicholas Castellanos is 4-for-8 against Severino, but the right-hander owns a 2-1 mark with a 2.70 ERA in three career appearances versus Detroit.

VerHagen is being summoned to start exactly five weeks after he was designated for assignment following his troubles while pitching out of the bullpen. The 27-year-old boasts a 2-0 mark with a 1.32 ERA while striking out 41 in six starts (27 1/3 innings) for Triple-A Toledo. "I've watched a couple of his games. He's actually throwing the ball really well," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire told MLive. "He's throwing strikes with all of his pitches. His curveball's been good. He's pretty much done exactly what we asked him to do: Go down there and figure out a way to throw the ball over the plate."

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit has recorded at least one two-base hit in 50 consecutive games, one shy of the 1999 Atlanta Braves for third place on the all-time list.

2. New York is sporting a scintillating 10-1 record against AL Central representatives this season.

3. Tigers 3B Jeimer Candelario has reached base in 28 straight games, tied for the 10th-longest streak in team history since 2001.

PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Tigers 2

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Domingo German (0-3, 5.45 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Mike Fiers (4-3, 4.45)

German fell to 0-2 with a 9.42 ERA in his last three starts (14 1/3 innings) after allowing four runs over 5 2/3 frames in Monday's 5-1 loss to Houston. The 25-year-old Dominican was taken deep for the fourth time in three outings against the Astros after keeping the ball in the park in four of his previous five trips to the mound. German was slated to start Sunday's game against Baltimore before the threat of rain resulted in a postponement, thus putting him in line for his first career outing versus Detroit.

Fiers is searching for his first win since May 14 despite allowing just one run in 5 2/3 innings before a rain delay led to his no-decision against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. The 32-year-old was blitzed for six runs on eight hits across 5 2/3 frames on April 13 versus New York, against which he is 0-1 with a 6.20 ERA in four career starts. Giancarlo Stanton (1-for-8, four strikeouts) and Brett Gardner (2-for-11) have struggled against Fiers, although Hicks (3-for-5, two homers) and Aaron Judge (3-for-8, homer) have gotten their licks in.

WALK-OFFS

Preview: Royals at Angels
Gracenote
Jun 3, 2018

The Los Angeles Angels are coming off a series in which a starting pitcher did not allow an earned run and will try to continue the surge when they host the light-hitting Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series on Monday. The Angels are second in the American League in starter's ERA at 3.61.

Tyler Skaggs posted six scoreless innings in Sunday's 3-1 victory over the Texas Rangers to follow stellar outings by Jaime Barria and Garrett Richards. "I just think we all want to one-up each other," Skaggs told reporters. "It's that quiet competitiveness. I think we're doing a good job of it right now." That good job by the starters is being aided by another hot streak from superstar Mike Trout, who is tied for the AL lead with 19 home runs and will be going up against a Royals staff that allowed a total of 25 runs while dropping two of three to the Oakland Athletics over the weekend. Kansas City will look for a strong effort on Monday from left-hander Danny Duffy while righty Nick Tropeano tries to keep up with the rest of the Los Angeles staff.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, FS Kansas City, FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (2-6, 5.71 ERA) vs. Angels RH Nick Tropeano (3-3, 3.80)

Duffy finished May strong with a pair of quality starts, allowing a total of two runs and eight hits over 13 2/3 innings against Texas and Minnesota. The 29-year-old issued four walks in six innings on Tuesday and has handed out 31 free passes in 64 2/3 total innings in 2018. Duffy is 2-1 with a 3.46 ERA in five career games - four starts - against Los Angeles.

Tropeano earned road wins in each of his last two starts while surrendering three runs and 11 hits in 12 2/3 innings against Toronto and Detroit. The 27-year-old yielded all three of those runs on solo homers and served up eight long balls in as many starts this season. Tropeano is 1-0 in two career starts against Kansas City with two runs allowed in 12 total innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels INF Zack Cozart (forearm) returned from a three-game absence on Sunday and went 1-for-3.

2. Royals CF Jon Jay snapped a string of 500 plate appearances without a home run with a solo blast on Sunday.

3. Kansas City RF Jorge Soler homered in three of the last six games.

PREDICTION: Angels 6, Royals 4

Preview: Braves at Padres
Gracenote
Jun 4, 2018

The Atlanta Braves took three of four from the Washington Nationals over the weekend to jump back into first place in the National League East and will try to keep up the momentum when they hit the west coast. The Braves begin a six-game road trip on Monday by visiting the San Diego Padres.

Atlanta fell in 14 innings on Saturday but came out on top Sunday when Charlie Culberson delivered his second walk-off homer of the homestand with a two-run, pinch-hit blast. "That's pretty cool. It really is," Culberson told reporters. "The fans were really into it. I heard them chanting my name. I was thinking this is a neat situation. To be in it again, I was like, 'just put a good swing on it, get a good pitch and try not to do too much. And it happened. I'm like, 'Wow.' It's pretty neat." The Padres haven't had as much to celebrate this season while sitting in last place in the NL West but did manage to pull off a series win by taking two of three from the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend. The Braves will try to keep rolling behind right-hander Julio Teheran on Monday while the Padres counter with lefty Clayton Richard.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Julio Teheran (4-3, 4.03 ERA) vs. Padres LH Clayton Richard (3-6, 4.74)

Teheran turned in quality starts in each of his last two outings but suffered a pair of losses thanks to lackluster run support. The Colombia native surrendered two runs over seven innings against the New York Mets on Wednesday in a game Atlanta went on to lose 4-1. Teheran is 4-2 with a 3.76 ERA in eight career starts against San Diego, including a win in his lone start against the Padres last season.

Richard is coming off a strong effort against Miami on Wednesday, when he allowed two runs and four hits over seven innings while striking out five but settled for a no-decision. The 34-year-old worked at least seven innings in four of his last five starts but is just 2-2 in that span. Richard is still looking for his first career win over the Braves and is 0-6 with a 6.75 ERA in nine career games - six starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres 3B Christian Villanueva left Sunday's game with an ankle injury and is day-to-day.

2. Atlanta 2B Ozzie Albies, who leads the team with 14 home runs, is homerless in his last 12 games.

3. San Diego OF Hunter Renfroe is 7-for-14 over his last six games after delivering a pinch-hit grand slam on Sunday.

PREDICTION: Braves 5, Padres 2

Preview: Diamondbacks at Giants
Gracenote
Jun 3, 2018

David Peralta has answered a disastrous May with a brilliant start to June by homering in each contest of the Arizona Diamondbacks' three-game sweep of Miami. Peralta hopes his sizzling bat doesn't cool off in his luggage on Monday when the Diamondbacks (31-27) begin a six-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants (29-30).

Peralta countered a .211 batting average last month by belting his 10th homer in Sunday's 6-1 romp to give him six hits, six RBIs and three runs scored during his four-game hitting streak for Arizona. The 30-year-old was not alone in his power surge, as the Diamondbacks homered nine times versus the Marlins en route to scoring 42 runs while winning five of six on the homestand. San Francisco has done just fine in its own right of late, pushing its home win streak to five games and overall victorious stretch to four after following up back-to-back shutouts with a 6-1 triumph over Philadelphia on Sunday. Andrew McCutchen launched a three-run homer to highlight his fourth multi-hit performance in eight games heading into a matchup with Monday starter Zack Godley, against whom he is 4-for-7 in his career.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Arizona, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (5-4, 4.38 ERA) vs. Giants LH Derek Holland (3-6, 4.94)

Godley recorded his best outing of the season on April 9 against San Francisco, as he scattered four hits and struck out a season-high nine batters over seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 triumph. The 28-year-old emerged victorious in two of his next three outings before snapping a five-start winless skid on Tuesday with a two-run, six-inning effort in a 5-2 triumph over Cincinnati. Hunter Pence is 4-for-7 while Buster Posey is 3-for-5 versus Godley, who owns a 2-1 mark in five career appearances against San Francisco while limiting the Giants to a .174 batting average.

Holland overcame surrendering four runs for the second time in three outings to escape with a win at Colorado on Wednesday. The 31-year-old pitched decidedly better in his April 9 start against Arizona, overcoming Paul Goldschmidt's triple in a two-run first inning before limiting the club to just those two runs on as many hits while striking out eight in six frames - albeit in a 2-1 setback. Ketel Marte had five hits and four runs scored versus the Marlins, but is just 3-for-13 in his career against Holland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Posey went deep on Sunday, giving him seven hits - including two homers - with five RBIs and four runs scored in his last five games.

2. Diamondbacks INF Daniel Descalsco is 6-for-16 with two homers, six RBIs and four runs scored in his last six contests, however he is just 2-for-12 against the Giants this season.

3. Giants RHP Jeff Samardzija (right shoulder tightness) will throw from flat ground on Monday, per manager Bruce Bochy.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 3, Giants 1
