Gracenote
Apr 30, 2018

The Cleveland Indians hope to get better pitching than they did in their last series when they host the last-place Texas Rangers on Monday for the opener of their three-game set. The Indians gave up 32 runs - 22 in the final two games - while losing three of four against Seattle and will send Trevor Bauer to the mound to try to turn around their fortunes.

Cleveland yielded five runs in the second inning en route to Sunday's 10-4 loss, and the bullpen surrendered 11 over the last two contests with All-Star Andrew Miller (hamstring) on the disabled list. Bauer, who owns the second-best ERA among Indians starters, will face Cole Hamels in the series opener as Texas seeks its fourth win in five games. The Rangers saw their season-high three-game winning streak come to an end Sunday with a 7-2 loss at Toronto but has been much better on the road (7-6) than at home (4-12) in the early going. Delino DeShields went 4-for-12 with two doubles and a walk in the series against the Blue Jays to raise his average to .229.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Texas), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (1-4, 4.41 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (2-2, 2.41)

Hamels is winless in his last four trips to the mound but has not had much offensive support all season (15 runs in six starts). The 34-year-old native of San Diego allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts across 6 1/3 innings in a loss to Oakland on Tuesday. Jose Ramirez is 5-for-11 with a double and Edwin Encarnacion has homered versus Hamels, who is 1-2 with a 6.11 ERA in six career games against the Indians.

Bauer goes after his fifth straight quality start and 50th career victory after yielding seven runs over 28 2/3 innings in his last four outings. The 27-year-old UCLA product gave up one run and four hits with a season-high eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 frames to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday. Bauer, who is 1-0 with a 3.67 ERA in four career games against Texas, has handled Nomar Mazara (0-for-6, one strikeout) in a small sample.

WALK-OFFS

1. Texas rookie INF Isiah Kiner-Falefa has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games after recording his third double on Sunday.

2. Cleveland LF Michael Brantley is 8-for-19 during his five-game hitting streak, raising his average to .348.

3. The Indians won six of their seven meetings with the Rangers last season, including three of four at home.

PREDICTION: Indians 5, Rangers 3

Apr 29, 2018

The Pittsburgh Pirates have answered a five-game losing skid with wins in five straight outings fueled on the steam of a few sterling performances on the mound. The National League Central-leading Pirates (17-11) aim to continue their torrid stretch on Monday when they begin a nine-game road trip with the first of four contests versus the Washington Nationals (12-16).

Nick Kingham carried a perfect game into the seventh inning as the Pirates posted their second shutout victory of their win streak with Sunday's 5-0 win over St. Louis. Batterymate Elias Diaz recorded his second three-hit performance in five days and his fifth multi-hit effort in eight outings for Pittsburgh, which carries a 7-6 road mark into the nation's capital to face a Washington club that is just 4-9 in front of its home fans. Michael A. Taylor joined Matt Wieters with a homer on Sunday as the Nationals collected just their second win in eight outings with a 3-1 triumph over Arizona. Taylor has ventured deep three times in his last seven outings, going 7-for-22 with five RBIs and seven runs scored in that stretch.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (2-2, 4.91 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Tanner Roark (1-2, 3.77)

Taillon has tumbled in each of his last two outings, surrendering a total of 12 runs on 14 hits - including three homers - over 5 1/3 innings in losses to Philadelphia and Detroit. The 26-year-old aims to get back on track versus Washington, against which he allowed one run on four hits in seven innings in his last encounter on Sept. 30. Ryan Zimmerman is 3-for-4 versus Taillon, but the right-hander has handcuffed the rest of the Nationals roster to the tune of limiting the bunch to 4-for-31 with seven strikeouts against him.

After a superb performance in his season opener, Roark fell to 0-2 in his last four outings on Tuesday after yielding four runs on six hits across six innings of a 4-3 setback at San Francisco. The 31-year-old permitted two homers in that clash and has been taken deep five times in his last four trips to the mound. Roark fell to 2-1 in his career versus Pittsburgh after getting blitzed for seven runs on eight hits - including two homers - in a 10-4 shellacking on May 18.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington SS Trea Turner has been successful in all 12 stolen base attempts this season.

2. Pittsburgh C Francisco Cervelli is 7-for-14 with two homers, eight RBIs and three runs scored in his last four outings.

3. Nationals OF Bryce Harper has just two hits - albeit with eight walks - in his last five games.

PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Pirates 2

Preview: Rockies at Cubs
Gracenote
Apr 30, 2018

After struggling at the plate over the weekend, the Colorado Rockies might be facing the wrong pitching staff in an attempt to turn things around when they begin their three-game road series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday. The Rockies were unable to score more than one run in any contest of their three-game series at Miami and now have to face a Cubs staff that gave up a total of two during a four-game sweep of Milwaukee.

Chicago has won four straight and six of its last seven to move a season-high five games above .500. The Cubs' rotation has posted six straight quality starts and hasn’t allowed an earned run in its last 28 innings – the club’s longest such streak since 1976. Veteran Jon Lester will try to extend the streak versus a Colorado lineup that managed only one extra-base hit in three games against the Marlins. The Rockies’ pitching staff also has been solid, allowing just nine runs over the last five contests.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (1-3, 4.33 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (2-1, 3.29)

Freeland was hit in the left heel by a line drive during his last start, but he still put together his best outing of the season. The 24-year-old struck out eight and limited the Padres to three hits over seven scoreless innings. Freeland faced the Cubs last season in Colorado and lost, allowing five runs - three earned - over six frames.

Lester was a hard-luck loser last time out, as he allowed only four hits over seven innings at Cleveland - three of which were solo homers. The 34-year-old has posted quality starts in three of his last four outings. Lester is 1-3 with a 2.73 ERA in four career turns against the Rockies.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs have won four straight games despite scoring fewer than four runs in each for the first time since at least 1908.

2. Rockies RF Carlos Gonzalez (hamstring) was eligible to return from the disabled list Sunday and is expected to be back at some point during the series.

3. Chicago 3B Kris Bryant and 1B Anthony Rizzo each have been hit by a pitch seven times, tying them for the major-league lead.

PREDICTION: Cubs 5, Rockies 3

Preview: Royals at Red Sox
Gracenote
Apr 29, 2018

The Kansas City Royals finally managed to put together a winning streak for the first time this season over the weekend, but their next challenge figures to be a bit more difficult. Two teams on the opposite end of the spectrum get together for the first time in 2018 when the Boston Red Sox host the opener of a three-game set Monday against the Royals.

Boston has cooled off since its 17-2 start with losses in five of its eight contests, but its 20-7 record is still the best in the majors after the club avoided its first sweep of the season with a 4-3 home win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. J.D. Martinez singled in all four of his at-bats and drove in a pair runs, while Sandy Leon broke open a tie game in the eighth inning with a run-scoring single of his own. American League-worst Kansas City (7-20) downed the Chicago White Sox in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday but still fell to 0-7-2 in series play because it was outscored 21-7 in the first three contests of the five-game set. Royals first baseman Cheslor Cuthbert ended a couple of dubious droughts in Sunday's 5-4 victory with his two-homer, four-RBI game, going deep for the first time since Aug. 20 while also driving in his first run since March 31.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS Kansas City, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Jason Hammel (0-2, 3.38 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (3-0, 3.63)

Hammel's winless streak reached nine starts dating back to last season following a loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday after he permitted four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks across 6 2/3 innings. The South Carolina native hasn't received much help from the AL's worst offense, however, as Kansas City has scored two runs or fewer in four of his five starts. Hanley Ramirez is 9-for-19 with a homer against Hammel, who went 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA in three starts versus the Red Sox last season.

Rodriguez has logged at least 100 pitches while producing three straight quality starts and has won each of them, including Wednesday in Toronto when he allowed three runs on six hits and a walk in 6 2/3 frames. The 25-year-old Venezuelan has been easier to hit at Fenway Park (.270 at home versus .188 on the road) but made up for it a bit by amassing 15 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings in those two turns. Rodriguez is 1-1 with a 4.98 ERA in four career starts against the Royals.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Red Sox-Royals all-time series is tied at 235-235.

2. Kansas City SS Alcides Escobar is day-to-day with a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch Sunday.

3. Boston OF Mookie Betts did not play Sunday due to a tight right hamstring, but manager Alex Cora called the two-time All-Star "day-to-day" in a postgame interview.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 7, Royals 3

Preview: Brewers at Reds
Gracenote
Apr 29, 2018

After beginning a nine-game road trip with a pair of victories in Kansas City that extended their overall winning streak to eight, the Milwaukee Brewers have seen their bats go into a deep freeze. Milwaukee looks to heat up offensively after totaling two runs during a four-game sweep in Chicago when it visits the Cincinnati Reds on Monday for the opener of their three-game series.

The Brewers were shut out in three of their four losses to the Cubs, including Sunday's 2-0 setback in which they produced just a pair of singles. Milwaukee registered a total of 14 hits in the four-game set and two in each of the final two contests, marking the first time since 1974 it has managed two or fewer in back-to-back games. Cincinnati hasn't won many contests this season, but it has poured on the offense in its last six triumphs. The Reds have scored at least seven runs in each of those victories, including Sunday's 8-2 romp at Minnesota in which Jose Peraza went 3-for-5 with an RBI during a 14-hit attack.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FS Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jhoulys Chacin (2-1, 3.99 ERA) vs. Reds LH Brandon Finnegan (0-2, 8.03)

Chacin appears to have overcome his early struggles as he has allowed three runs over 15 2/3 innings while going 2-0 in his last three starts. The 30-year-old Venezuelan is coming off a victory at Kansas City on Wednesday in which he yielded two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 frames. Chacin owns a 2-3 record with one complete game and a 3.64 ERA in six starts and two relief appearances against Cincinnati.

Finnegan is seeking his first win of 2018 as he makes his fourth start after beginning the season on the disabled list due to a biceps injury. The 25-year-old Texan settled for a no-decision against Atlanta on Wednesday after giving up three runs - two earned - and seven hits in five innings. Finnegan has made five starts and one relief appearance against Milwaukee in his career, going 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Brewers hosted a three-game set against the Reds earlier this month, losing the opener decisively before posting back-to-back 2-0 victories.

2. Cincinnati OF Jesse Winker and 1B Joey Votto have reached safely in 16 and 14 consecutive games, respectively.

3. Milwaukee LHP Brent Suter has been moved to the bullpen to make room in the rotation for LHP Wade Miley (groin), who will make his debut with the team when he starts the series finale on Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Brewers 5, Reds 3

Preview: Phillies at Marlins

Apr 29, 2018

Jake Arrieta didn't put his best foot forward in his first start of the 2018 season, exiting after four innings in a no-decision versus the Miami Marlins. Three starts and as many wins later, the 2015 National League Cy Young Award recipient aims for a better showing on Monday as the Philadelphia Phillies (16-11) open a three-game series against the host Marlins (9-18).

Aaron Altherr scored his team's lone run and collected three of his club's five hits in Sunday's 10-1 rout by Atlanta as the Phillies have dropped four of six overall after losing two of three to the Braves for the third time this season. Maikel Franco joined Altherr in belting a grand slam to highlight a 20-1 romp over Miami on April 7, with the former going 6-for-12 with two homers, 10 RBIs and four runs scored as Philadelphia won two of three in that series. Miguel Rojas homered in the finale of that set and went deep for the second time in four outings as the Marlins posted their fourth win in five games with Sunday's 3-0 triumph over Colorado. "Early in the season, we were finding a way to lose," manager Don Mattingly told reporters. "To put a couple of series in a row together, that's the only way we're going to ever get marching down the road toward respectability."

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jake Arrieta (3-0, 1.82 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (2017: 10-9, 4.26)

Signed to a three-year, $75 million deal, Arrieta allowed three runs on as many hits in four innings of a no-decision against Miami on April 8. The 32-year-old has flipped the switch over his last three outings, permitting three earned runs while scattering 12 hits and striking out 13 in 20 2/3 innings. J.T. Realmuto (3-for-8) and Justin Bour (2-for-6) have gotten their licks in against Arrieta, but the right-hander has limited the rest of current roster to going 3-for-36 with eight strikeouts.

Straily is expected to come off the disabled list and make his first start of 2018 after being sidelined with a right forearm inflammation. The 29-year-old struck out 12 over 13 innings during three rehab starts and looks to provide a workhorse presence for Miami after logging a team-high 181 2/3 innings last season. "You always feel good with Dan. We've taken our time with him to make sure he's fully ready," Mattingly said of Straily, who sports a 4-2 career mark versus Philadelphia despite a less-than-desirable 5.35 ERA and 1.78 WHIP while allowing the club to bat .338 against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera, who has reached base in a career-best 29 consecutive games, went 7-for-12 with five runs scored in the first series versus Miami.

2. Marlins OF Cameron Maybin is just 6-for-43 with 15 strikeouts since facing the Phillies earlier this month.

3. Philadelphia 2B Cesar Hernandez has reached base 12 times in his last six games overall and eight times versus Miami this season.

PREDICTION: Phillies 3, Marlins 1

Gracenote
Apr 29, 2018

The Tampa Bay Rays' eight-game winning streak might be over, but their surge over the last 1 1/2 weeks has allowed them to remove the stench of their 4-13 start. The Rays hope to continue what has been a successful road trip to this point when they complete the last leg of an eight-game trek with the first of three contests versus the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

"We needed it every bit (of the streak) and then some. A lot of good things kind of came about. We saw our offense take shape a little bit and get hot. Pitchers got into that better rhythm, and defensively kind of as advertised," Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash told reporters after Sunday's 4-3 loss in Boston. The Rays (12-14) didn't function at quite the same level offensively as they had become accustomed, however, after scoring at least eight runs in six of their previous seven games. The Tigers have dropped four of their last five while scoring 15 runs - nine coming in their lone win - since a 13-10 victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Detroit is coming off a 5-3 defeat at Baltimore and may not have 11-time All-Star first baseman Miguel Cabrera available for the opener after he left the game in the fifth inning during Sunday's loss.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Jake Faria (1-1, 6.33 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (1-0, 7.91)

Faria struggled for the second time in as many road starts Wednesday in Baltimore but came away with a no-decision despite yielding four runs on four hits and three walks in 4 1/3 frames. The outing came after two home turns in which the 24-year-old held Philadelphia and Texas to one run apiece over a combined 11 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .346 on the road against Faria, who beat the Tigers in his only start against them last June, allowing one run and striking out nine over seven innings.

Zimmermann remained without a quality start in five tries following Wednesday's no-decision at Pittsburgh, permitting six runs (three earned) - including two homers - on six hits while throwing 66 pitches across three innings. The two-time All-Star has nearly doubled his strikeouts per nine innings from last season (10.24 in 2018, 5.79 in 2017) but is allowing opponents to bat .333. Adeiny Hechavarria is 7-for-33 against Zimmermann, who is 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA in five career starts versus Tampa Bay.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays OF Denard Span is batting .333 with three doubles, three homers and 13 RBIs over his last 10 games.

2. Cabrera was diagnosed with a left biceps spasm but reported feeling much better after receiving treatment. He is expected to be re-evaluated on Monday.

3. Tampa Bay 1B C.J. Cron has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games.

PREDICTION: Rays 6, Tigers 5

Apr 30, 2018

The runaway train known as the New York Yankees attempt to push their winning streak to double digits when they visit the Houston Astros on Monday for the opener of their four-game series in a rematch of the 2017 American League Championship Series. New York completed a three-game road sweep with Sunday's 2-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Angels, which was its ninth consecutive victory.

Gary Sanchez's two-run homer in the fourth inning held up as CC Sabathia and two relievers limited the Angels to one run and six hits as the Yankees remained unbeaten since dropping an 8-5 decision to Toronto on April 20. Houston appears to have recovered from a stretch during which it lost three of four as it outscored Oakland 19-4 in a pair of victories. George Springer belted a two-run homer while reigning AL MVP Jose Altuve singled and drove in two runs in Sunday's 8-4 triumph as the Astros improved to 3-3 on their 10-game homestand. Altuve, who has won three batting titles in the last four years, has been held without a hit in only four of 29 games this season.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Sonny Gray (1-1, 7.71 ERA) vs. Astros RH Charlie Morton (3-0, 1.86)

Gray's struggles continued Wednesday as he yielded three runs on six hits and five walks while throwing 104 pitches in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision against Minnesota. It was the second-longest outing of the season for the 28-year-old native of Tennessee, who surrendered 11 runs over 6 1/3 frames in his previous two outings. Gray, who limited Houston to two runs and one hit over five innings in Game 4 of the ALCS last year, is 4-3 with one complete game and a 3.09 ERA in nine career regular-season starts versus the Astros.

Morton was brilliant in his first four starts of the season but had trouble against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, when he escaped with a no-decision after giving up four runs on five hits and five walks in four innings. The 34-year-old from New Jersey recorded only two strikeouts in that outing after registering 33 over 25 frames in his first four turns. Morton split his two career regular-season starts against New York and did the same in last year's postseason matchup, yielding seven runs over 3 2/3 frames in a Game 3 loss before tossing five scoreless innings en route to victory in Game 7.

WALK-OFFS

1. Sanchez, whose last eight hits have gone for extra bases, has scored at least one run in each of his last eight contests.

2. Houston SS Carlos Correa went 0-for-4 on Sunday, ending his 12-game hitting streak.

3. New York has outscored its opponents 64-18 during its winning streak.

PREDICTION: Astros 7, Yankees 3

Preview: Padres at Giants
Gracenote
Apr 30, 2018

Hunter Strickland quietly has emerged as a reliable closer for the San Francisco Giants, who begin a three-game series against the visiting San Diego Padres on Monday. Taking over for injured veteran Mark Melancon, the 29-year-old Strickland has converted five consecutive save opportunities for the Giants, who have won three straight series for the first time since May 2017.

The Giants took three of four from the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend but could be without Joe Panik for an extended period after the second baseman suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb on Friday. Kelby Tomlinson and Alen Hanson are expected to step in for Panik, who was hitting .267 with three home runs but could miss 6-8 weeks if surgery is required. San Diego has dropped six of its last eight games and placed Wil Myers on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday with a strained left oblique. The Padres received another lackluster pitching performance from Bryan Mitchell in Sunday’s 14-2 loss to the New York Mets, but Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 and has reached safely in eight of his last nine games.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS San Diego, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Eric Lauer (0-1, 18.00 ERA) vs. Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 6.23)

Lauer had an inauspicious major-league debut against Colorado on Tuesday, allowing seven runs - six earned - in three innings of an 8-0 loss. “We like a lot of things about him, and that doesn’t change on one cold night at Coors Field,” manager Andy Green told reporters. “He got the first outing out of the way. Now it’s, 'Go pitch and compete and show why we believe in you.'” The 22-year-old led the NCAA with a 0.69 ERA at Kent State in 2016 and posted a 3.00 ERA in 35 appearances (34 starts) in the minors.

After tossing five scoreless innings in his season debut on April 20, Samardzija gave up six runs over 3 2/3 frames against Washington on Wednesday. The 33-year-old still is rounding into form after missing the beginning of the season with a strained pectoral muscle. Manuel Margot is hitless in 10 at-bats against Samardzija, who owns an 8-3 record and 3.64 ERA in 16 career games (14 starts) versus San Diego.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Francisco is 11-3 when opening the scoring and 3-11 when its opponents gets on the board first.

2. The Padres recalled OF Travis Jankowski from Triple-A El Paso to replace Myers on the roster.

3. The Giants will recall RHP Andrew Suarez from Triple-A Sacramento to start Tuesday’s game.

PREDICTION: Giants 6, Padres 5
