Preview: Giants at Nationals
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

Gio Gonzalez is unbeaten in his last seven starts since dropping a decision at San Francisco on April 23, a loss he will try to avenge when the Washington Nationals continue a three-game series against the visiting Giants on Saturday afternoon. Gonzalez allowed three runs over five innings in the previous meeting, one of only two starts in which he has yielded more than two earned runs.

Center fielder Adam Eaton could be activated off the disabled list Saturday for Washington, which could use a solid outing from Gonzalez after Stephen Strasburg lasted only two innings in the series opener due to shoulder inflammation. Gonzalez will have a tough act to follow -- the newly minted champion Washington Capitals will be at the game with the Stanley Cup in tow and captain Alex Ovechkin will throw out the ceremonial first pitch Saturday. Andrew McCutchen has hit safely in five straight games and is 9-for-24 with three homers and six RBIs in that span for the Giants, who pounded out 15 hits in the opener of a 10-game road trip. Gorkys Hernández belted a two-run homer and Hunter Pence had two hits and two RBIs as San Francisco rolled to a 9-5 victory in the series opener to improve to 7-1 in its last eight games.

TV: 12:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Dereck Rodríguez (1-0, 1.93 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (6-2, 2.27)

Rodriguez rebounded from a shaky performance in his major league debut to win his first career start in his second appearance, limiting Philadelphia to one run and five hits while striking out six over six innings. The son of Hall of Fame catcher Pudge Rodriguez gave up four runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings of relief at Colorado on May 29. Opponents are 3-for-15 against him with runners on base.

Gonzalez did not factor in the decision last time out at Atlanta despite striking out a season-high nine and allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings. He has five quality starts during his current unbeaten streak and has yet to permit more than three runs this season. Buster Posey (9-for-29) and McCutchen (7-for-23) have fared well against Gonzalez, who has split 10 decisions against the Giants.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants SS Brandon Crawford is riding an eight-game hitting streak, including six multiple-hit contests.

2. Nationals RH Justin Miller has retired 22 of 23 batters this season, including 14 strikeouts.

3. Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto (elbow) threw off a mound Friday for the first time since his last start on April 28.

PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Giants 4

Preview: Brewers at Phillies
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

Ryan Braun has flexed his muscles at Citizens Bank Park throughout his career and all it took was another visit there to break the former National League MVP out of a slump. Braun homered twice and drove in five runs in Friday's 12-4 romp for the visiting Milwaukee Brewers, who will try to make it two straight over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday afternoon.

In a 2-for-18 slide entering the series, Braun clubbed a three-run homer and a two-run shot as Milwaukee built an 11-run lead en route to snapping a three-game losing streak. Braun has put up staggering numbers in 32 games at Citizens Bank Park: 13 homers, 39 RBIs and a .400 batting average (52-for-130). Carlos Santana homered and had a sacrifice fly for Philadelphia, which has dropped three in a row and six of seven in June. Phillies right-hander Jake Arrieta will try to rebound from a rare clunker and takes a career 8-4 record and 2.74 ERA into Saturday's start against Milwaukee and lefty Brent Suter.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), NBCS Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers LH Brent Suter (5-4, 4.55 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jake Arrieta (5-3, 2.66)

Although he had a three-start winning streak halted at the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, Suter turned in another strong effort by allowing two runs and three hits over five innings. The 28-year-old has permitted only eight runs and 17 hits over 21 1/3 innings spanning his last four outings. Suter has been solid in six road starts with a 2-2 record and 3.77 ERA -- 1 1/2 runs lower than his home ERA (5.29).

Arrieta cruised through five scoreless innings at San Francisco last time out before he was battered for five runs in the sixth inning in a 6-1 setback to the Giants. The former Cy Young Award winner surrendered only three earned runs in five starts in May, including 14 scoreless innings in two outings at home. Arrieta is 3-0 with an 0.84 ERA in five home starts, holding opposing batters to a .182 average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers CF Lorenzo Cain has three straight multiple-hit games, going 6-for-13 in that span.

2. Phillies RF Dylan Cozens left Friday's game due to left quadriceps tightness.

3. Brewers SS Orlando Arcia and OF Christian Yelich each have hit safely in three straight games.

PREDICTION: Phillies 4, Brewers 3

Preview: Orioles at Blue Jays
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

Instead of relying on late offense to beat the Baltimore Orioles again, the Toronto Blue Jays turned to a rotation that has been more than holding its own of late. The Blue Jays eye their first three-game winning streak since April 29-May 1 on Saturday, when they try to secure a series victory against the visiting Orioles with a win in the third contest of their four-game set.

Despite winning three of the first four meetings with their American League East rival this season, the Blue Jays had scored 10 of their 18 runs against Baltimore after the eighth frame in those contests, including four in Thursday's 10-inning 5-4 victory. Russell Martin, Randal Grichuk and Kevin Pillar supplied plenty of offense before the final inning in Friday's 5-1 victory, as each player hit a solo home run to complement Toronto's fifth straight quality start - its longest such run since it posted seven in a row in September 2016. Backup outfielder Craig Gentry went 3-for-3 in what was another listless offensive performance by Baltimore, which owns the worst overall record in the major leagues (19-43) as well as the worst road mark (9-25). The Orioles have lost nine of 11 overall, scoring two runs or fewer in eight of those contests.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), Sportsnet, TVA (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (3-5, 4.63 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 4.48)

Gausman struck out nine but otherwise was hit hard Saturday in a loss to the New York Yankees, giving up six runs and nine hits - including a pair of homers - in 5 1/3 innings. The outing marked the third time in four tries the LSU product has surrendered at least five earned runs, dropping him to 0-3 with an 8.53 ERA over that span. Curtis Granderson has homered twice in seven at-bats versus Gausman, who defeated Toronto on April 11 after allowing three runs over six frames.

Sanchez stopped a three-game losing streak with a strong effort in Sunday's win at Detroit, yielding only two hits - including a solo homer - while walking three and striking out seven in six innings. The 25-year-old is fourth in the majors with 38 walks, issuing at least three in eight of his 12 turns this season. Sanchez overcame the first of his two five-walk starts this season in a win at Baltimore on April 10, permitting one run over a season-high eight frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Blue Jays' rotation has not allowed more than one earned run in any of the last five games and is holding opponents to a .155 average over that span.

2. Baltimore LHP Zach Britton (Achilles') is expected to come off the disabled list Monday to rejoin the team for its series opener against Boston.

3. Toronto ended its 33-day stretch without consecutive wins on Friday, halting the third-longest such streak in team history.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 6, Orioles 2

Preview: Angels at Twins
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

Just over a week into June, the Los Angeles Angels have endured a forgettable month in the injury department, but that hasn't kept them from playing some of their best baseball of the season. The Angels attempt to match their longest winning streak of the year on Saturday, when they continue a three-game series against the host Minnesota Twins.

Los Angeles announced early Friday that two-way rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani (elbow) would be sidelined at least three weeks, joining a growing list of teammates on the disabled list this month that includes Andrelton Simmons, Kole Calhoun and Kaleb Cowart. The Angels haven't missed their ailing comrades lately, however, winning five straight and six of seven overall in June following Friday's 4-2 triumph over Minnesota. The Twins began the month with four straight victories but dropped to 5-4 on their 11-game homestand following their third setback in four contests. Miguel Sano was awarded an RBI double on a high chopper that bounced over third baseman Luis Valbuena in the second inning Friday, but the struggling slugger still is batting only .189 with 24 strikeouts in 53 at-bats since coming off the disabled list on May 25.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), FS North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (4-4, 3.27 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (1-3, 3.54)

Skaggs ended a three-game losing streak with his third scoreless outing in 12 turns following Sunday's victory against Texas, giving up four hits and three walks while striking out six over as many innings. The 26-year-old has permitted fewer than three runs nine times this season, but all four of his wins have come during starts in which he has yielded a total of one run. Brian Dozier singled and homered against Skaggs on May 11, when he allowed two hits and struck out seven in a no-decision.

Gibson's unlucky campaign continued Sunday against Cleveland, as he settled for his eighth no-decision in 12 trips to the mound and remained winless since prevailing in his season debut on March 31. The native of Indiana surrendered two runs over 5 2/3 frames in the outing, marking the seventh time in eight turns he has given up three runs or fewer. Ian Kinsler is 14-for-44 with two homers and six walks versus Gibson, who did not factor in the decision despite allowing two runs over six innings against Los Angeles on May 12.

WALK-OFFS

1. After going hitless in 12 at-bats over his previous three games, Kinsler has recorded two hits - including a two-run homer - in each of his last two contests.

2. Minnesota SS-3B Eduardo Escobar is 11-for-22 with eight extra-base hits and eight RBIs during his six-game hitting streak.

3. Despite a 3-for-4 effort against Kansas City on Monday, Los Angeles OF Mike Trout is 4-for-18 during his team's winning streak.

PREDICTION: Angels 3, Twins 2

Preview: Pirates at Cubs
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

The Chicago Cubs battled an inconsistent offense and an underachieving starting rotation for most of the first two months of the season, but they’re starting to look like the World Series contender they were expected to be. The Cubs have won 10 of their last 12 games to move a season-best 12 games over .500, and they’ll try to continue that trend in the second of a three-game series with the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

Chicago won its third straight and seventh in eight contests with a 3-1 victory in Friday’s series opener, remaining a half-game back of National League Central leader Milwaukee. "We've been playing great," Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant told reporters. "It's something we've all known we can play like. We expected to go on a run here like this." Bryant batted leadoff for the first time in his career Friday and went 3-for-4 for his team-best eighth three-hit game of the season. The Pirates have lost five of their last six games and 15 of 20 to drop below .500 for the first time all season.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, ABC 7 (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Nick Kingham (2-2, 4.03 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (6-2, 2.44)

After winning his first two starts, the Pirates have dropped Kingham’s last three and he has taken the loss in two of them. The 26-year-old rookie gave up four runs (three earned) over five innings in a 5-0 defeat at St. Louis on Sunday. Kingham started against the Cubs on May 29 in Pittsburgh and gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision.

Lester has been the Cubs’ best starter and has been outstanding for an extended period, posting a 1.94 ERA over his last nine starts. The 34-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven outings, including Sunday when he held the New York Mets to two hits over seven scoreless innings in a road win. Lester improved to 6-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 14 starts against the Pirates with a win on May 29 in Pittsburgh.

Preview: White Sox at Red Sox
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

Without their top two sluggers, the Boston Red Sox have seen their offense grind to a halt. They'll try to get the bats going again when they continue a three-game series with the visiting Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

J.D. Martinez, who leads the majors in home runs with 20, left Boston's 7-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Thursday due to a back strain, joining fellow star Mookie Betts (abdominal strain) on the sidelines for the opener with the White Sox on Friday. A makeshift Red Sox lineup managed three hits and drew one walk against four Chicago pitchers in a 1-0 loss, dropping Boston into second place in the American League East. Martinez told reporters he expects to play Saturday and Betts is scheduled to hit outside, according to manager Alex Cora. The White Sox have won five of their last eight to crawl out of the basement in the AL Central and now turn to Carlos Rodon, who will be making his season debut Saturday after recovering from shoulder surgery in September when he opposes fellow lefty David Price.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCS Chicago, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (2017: 2-5, 4.15 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH David Price (6-4, 4.08)

Rodon was limited to 12 starts in his injury-plagued 2017 campaign, although he dominated the Red Sox in one of them with 11 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball. The former first-round pick made three rehab starts for Triple-A Charlotte and recorded 22 strikeouts in 12 2/3 frames while allowing two runs. Rodon is 0-1 with a 3.29 ERA in two career starts versus Boston.

Price gave up three runs in six innings with seven strikeouts to win at Houston his last time out. He has had some ups and downs at Fenway Park, where he is 2-2 with a 5.66 ERA over his last four outings and where he's issued 13 walks in 27 2/3 innings overall. Slugger Jose Abreu is just 2-for-18 with a home run against Price, who is 5-5 with a 3.41 mark versus Chicago.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox LF Andrew Benintendi boasts seven extra-base hits in his last six games.

2. The White Sox are 5-6 against the AL East and 16-34 against all other opponents.

3. Boston recalled RHP Justin Haley from Triple-A Pawtucket while optioning LHP Jalen Beeks, who made his major-league debut Thursday against Detroit.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 5, White Sox 3

Preview: Royals at Athletics
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

The Oakland Athletics have had their way with the struggling Kansas City Royals this month and hope to continue the trend when they host the third contest of their four-game series on Saturday. Oakland began June by winning two of three in Kansas City, outscoring the Royals 25-6 in the set, and have taken the first two games of this series by an 11-3 margin - including Friday's 7-2 triumph.

Khris Davis registered his 17th career multi-homer performance - and second this season - with a pair of solo shots and Jonathan Lucroy collected three RBIs as the Athletics improved to 2-0 on its 10-game homestand. Davis, who leads the team with 17 blasts, has gone deep four times over his last four contests. Mike Moustakas belted a two-run homer and Alex Gordon notched three of the seven hits recorded by the Royals, who have lost six straight and seven of eight this month. Moustakas leads Kansas City with 42 RBIs but posted just one over his previous seven contests.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FS Kansas City, NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (2-6, 5.81 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Chris Bassitt (2016: 0-2, 6.11)

Duffy escaped with a no-decision against the Angels in Los Angeles on Monday after yielding four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. The 29-year-old Californian had put together back-to-back strong outings prior to that, allowing one run and four hits in both a win at Texas (a season-high 7 2/3 innings) and a no-decision versus Minnesota (six frames). Duffy has yet to lose to Oakland in his career, going 3-0 with a 3.44 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance.

Bassitt is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Nashville to start in place of Trevor Cahill, who is nursing an Achilles injury. The 29-year-old Bassitt has not pitched in the majors since April 28, 2016 as he required Tommy John surgery after surrendering seven runs on 10 hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings in a loss at Detroit. Bassitt has made three career starts against Kansas City, posting a 4.60 ERA without recording a decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics SS Marcus Semien has gone 5-for-8 over the first two games of the series after registering just one hit in his first 19 at-bats this month.

2. Kansas City OF Jorge Soler exited Friday's contest with a bruised big toe on his left foot suffered while fouling off a pitch and is day-to-day.

3. Oakland activated Santiago Casilla (shoulder) from the 10-day disabled list and optioned fellow RHP Ryan Dull to Triple-A Nashville.

Gracenote
Jun 8, 2018

Jason Kipnis is slowly recovering from a rough start to the season and the Cleveland Indians’ second baseman comes into the second of a four-game road series against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday off one of his biggest hits of 2018. Kipnis, who has raised his average 29 points since May 25 to .206, launched a tiebreaking three-run homer in the ninth inning Friday for a 4-1 victory in the series opener.

Kipnis is 16-for-52 with three homers and eight RBIs over his last 13 games to add to an Indians’ offense that has averaged 5.6 runs during a 9-3 surge, giving them a comfortable lead atop the American League Central. Mike Clevinger looks to keep it going for Cleveland when he takes the mound Saturday against fellow right-hander Mike Fiers in a battle of Florida natives. The Tigers have cooled off with five losses in their last seven games after a promising 8-2 stretch, and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position during Friday’s setback - the third time in four games in which they scored one or zero runs. Center fielder Leonys Martin has been Detroit’s hottest hitter of late, going 7-for-18 with a pair of doubles, a triple and a homer in his last five contests.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Mike Clevinger (4-2, 3.36 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Mike Fiers (5-3, 4.33)

Clevinger is 1-2 with a 4.81 ERA in his last four starts after giving up four runs over six innings of a no-decision at Minnesota last Sunday. The 27-year-old Jacksonville, Fla., native owns a 2.38 ERA in five road starts this year, including a complete-game victory at Baltimore on April 21. Miguel Cabrera has a homer but is just 2-for-13 against Clevinger, who is 4-1 with a 2.28 ERA in six career games (five starts) versus the Tigers.

Fiers has struggled to go deep into games, but allowed two or fewer runs in four of his last six starts while going 3-1 during that stretch. The 32-year-old Hollywood, Fla., native completed at least six innings in just three of his 11 starts and has permitted 12 homers overall, including one or more in seven of the past eight outings. Jose Ramirez is 5-for-13 with a homer versus Fiers, who is 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA in five career starts against the Indians.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit RF Nicholas Castellanos has hit safely in 17 of his last 20 games - including the last four - to raise his average to .329.

2. Cleveland DH-1B Edwin Encarnacion boasts 15 RBIs in his last 12 games despite being held without one the past three.

3. Cabrera remains one RBI behind Ernie Banks (1,636) for 32nd on major league baseball’s all-time list.

Jun 9, 2018

Impressive rookie Brian Anderson looks to continue another hot streak as his Miami Marlins go for a fourth win in five contests when they host the San Diego Padres on Saturday for the middle contest of a three-game set. Anderson, who easily leads all major league rookies with 72 hits, had two singles and a double Friday to extend his hitting streak to six games as the Marlins recorded a 4-0 victory in the series opener.

Anderson is 12-for-24 with six RBIs during his current hitting streak and has hit safely in all five games against the Padres this season (10-for-22) to raise his batting average to a team-best .304 overall. Dan Straily looks to clinch a second straight series victory for Miami when he takes the ball Saturday against Tyson Ross in a rematch of the game on May 29, won 9-5 by San Diego. The Padres came in 7-2 in their previous nine games with three straight series victories, but managed six hits Friday and went 0-4 with runners in scoring position after scoring 22 times while winning three of four against the Marlins last month. San Diego first baseman Eric Hosmer registered a double and a single Friday for his team-high 24th multi-hit game, and is 17-for-37 over his last 10 contests.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Tyson Ross (5-3, 3.31 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (2-2, 3.50)

Ross is unbeaten in his last five starts, allowing nine runs and 26 hits across 29 innings during that stretch, earning three victories and receiving a no-decision against Miami along the way. The 31-year-old Californian beat Cincinnati last Sunday with five innings of two-run ball and owns a 2.97 ERA in six road starts. J.T. Realmuto and Justin Bour are both 3-for-6 versus Ross, who permitted three runs over 5 1/3 innings against Miami on May 29.

Straily walked five batters while giving up just one run and two hits over 4 1/3 innings of a 6-1 setback at Arizona last Sunday to post his second consecutive loss. The 29-year-old Marshall product gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and zero walks over 5 2/3 innings in a loss against Ross and San Diego last month. Hosmer is 3-for-4 with a double versus Straily, who is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three career starts against the Padres.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Diego INF-OF Jose Pirela has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and four straight (6-for-16).

2. Miami 2B Starlin Castro is 10-for-30 with four RBIs in seven games during June to raise his batting average to .292.

3. The Marlins (220) and the Padres (212) came into the series with the most games played by rookies in the majors this year.

Preview: Mariners at Rays
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

Blake Snell dominated Seattle and was just as impressive as childhood idol Felix Hernandez in his last outing and looks to do both again on Saturday when the Tampa Bay Rays host the Mariners in the third contest of a four-game set. Snell struck out 12 and allowed two hits in six scoreless innings last weekend in Seattle before the bullpen blew the lead in a 2-1 setback.

Snell matched the American League record by striking out the first seven batters he faced and finished one shy of his career best for strikeouts. The Seattle native hasn't allowed an earned run in his last three outings spanning 19 2/3 innings and he will attempt to halt a Tampa Bay losing streak that reached eight with Friday's 4-3 loss to the Mariners, who have won seven of their past eight games and 16 of their last 20. Hernandez put together his best start of the season on Sunday and ended a three-start winless stretch by allowing one run and five hits over a season-best eight innings. The veteran right-hander has usually fared well against Tampa Bay with a 9-2 mark and 1.89 ERA in 17 career starts, including a perfect game on Aug. 15, 2012.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (6-4, 5.33 ERA) vs. Rays LH Blake Snell (7-3, 2.36)

Hernandez flashed his former All-Star form in Sunday's matchup against Snell and also matched his season best of seven strikeouts. The 32-year-old was touched up for five runs in three of his previous five turns and possessed a 7.16 ERA during the stretch. Hernandez has struggled against Carlos Gomez (6-for-20, two homers) while shutting down C.J. Cron (2-for-20 with one homer and nine strikeouts).

Snell is 3-0 over his last four starts and has a stellar 0.74 ERA during the stretch. For the seaosn, the 25-year-old is limiting opposing batters to a .180 average and has fanned 88 in 76 1/3 innings. Snell is 1-1 with an 0.55 ERA in three career starts against Seattle and neither hot-hitting Jean Segura (0-for-6) nor slugger Kyle Seager (0-for-4) have a hit against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Mariners are 5-0 against the Rays this season and have won 11 of the past 12 meetings.

2. Tampa Bay SS Adeiny Hechavarria (hamstring) could begin a minor-league rehab stint as soon as Monday.

3. Seattle placed RHPs Juan Nicasio (knee) and Dan Altavilla (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled RHP Mike Morin and 1B Daniel Vogelbach - who had an RBI single on Friday - from Triple-A Tacoma.

Jun 9, 2018

The visiting St. Louis Cardinals continue to dominate the Cincinnati Reds and will try to extend multiple impressive streaks when the teams play the middle contest of a three-game series on Saturday. A 7-6 extra-inning victory in the opener Friday night gave the Cardinals 12 consecutive wins over their National League Central division rivals, tied for the second-longest streak against the Reds in franchise history.

St. Louis also picked up its 10th straight triumph at Great American Ball Park, which matches a 1930-31 streak as the club's longest on the road against Cincinnati. Jose Martinez slugged a pair of homers in Friday's win and is 11-for-22 with three home runs, three doubles and eight RBIs during his six-game hitting streak. The Reds forced extra innings with a two-run rally in the ninth but still wound up losing their 22nd home game, most in the majors, and they've dropped five of their last six overall. St. Louis right-hander Michael Wacha took a no-hitter into the ninth inning Sunday against Pittsburgh and seeks an encore performance when he opposes Luis Castillo on Saturday.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (7-1, 2.41 ERA) vs. Reds RH Luis Castillo (4-6, 5.64)

Wacha allowed a leadoff hit in the ninth inning against the Pirates before departing with a season-high 111 pitches, striking out eight and walking two. The dominant outing left him 5-0 with a 1.60 ERA over a span of nine starts, which started with 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball against Cincinnati on April 20. The 26-year-old is 10-1 with a 2.88 ERA in his career against the Reds despite having some troubles with Joey Votto (13-for-36 with six extra-base hits) and Scooter Gennett (10-for-31).

Castillo lasted six innings just once in his last four starts and was knocked out after 4 2/3 at San Diego on Sunday. Home runs remain a major issue for the Dominincan Republic native, who has allowed at least one in eight of his last nine outings. The 25-year-old allowed three runs in five innings to get the loss earlier in the year against the Cardinals and he is 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in two career meetings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds OF Scott Schebler went 4-for-6 on Friday to record his fourth straight multi-hit effort.

2. Cincinnati has a total of 23 runs while going 0-8 against St. Louis this year.

3. The Cardinals placed LHP Tyler Lyons (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled RHP Mike Mayers from Triple-A Memphis.

Jose Altuve looks for his third consecutive multi-hit outing in the series when the Houston Astros visit the Texas Rangers on Saturday in the third contest of a four-game set. The three-time American League batting champion had two hits, including a two-run homer, in Houston's 7-3 victory on Friday and is 5-for-9 in the series as the Astros won the first two contests.

Altuve is batting .362 in 47 at-bats against Texas this season and also sports an overall six-game hitting streak, going 10-for-23 during the stretch. Alex Bregman homered for the second straight contest and is 9-for-29 with three homers and seven RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak. Texas designated hitter Shin-Soo Choo is 4-for-7 with a homer and two walks in the series and has reached base in each of his past 24 games - the longest current streak in the majors. The Rangers are just 13-21 in their home ballpark after allowing 12 runs in the first two games of the series.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, Fox

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Charlie Morton (7-1, 2.84 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Mike Minor (4-4, 5.76)

Morton won his first seven decisions of the season before getting pummeled for six runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings while losing to Boston on Sunday. The 34-year-old has served up four homers in 11 1/3 innings over his last two turns while allowing nine runs and 17 hits. Morton is 1-0 with 26 strikeouts and only one walk in 13 innings against Texas this season and is 2-1 with a 3.03 ERA in five career starts against the Rangers while dominating Joey Gallo (0-for-12, 11 strikeouts).

Minor was 2-3 in May despite a porous 6.96 ERA and surrendered nine homers in six starts during the month. The 30-year-old lost to Seattle in his last outing on May 31 when he gave up five runs - four earned - and six hits over five innings. Jun 9, 2018

The New York Yankees took on the best their crosstown rivals could throw at them and still walked away victoriously. The Yankees will try to make it two straight in the Subway Series when they continue a three-game set at the stumbling New York Mets on Saturday.

A tiebreaking two-run homer by Brett Gardner in the top of the eighth inning lifted the Yankees to a 4-1 win over the Mets and ace Jacob deGrom in Friday's opener, giving the Bronx Bombers a 32-9 record since a 9-9 start and thrusting them back into first place in the American League East. The Yankees have won five straight over the Mets, who also set a season standard with their seventh consecutive loss overall - during which they've scored a total of eight runs - and extended their home skid to nine straight. To make matters worse, they placed closer Jeurys Familia (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list Friday and announced that Sunday's scheduled starter, Noah Syndergaard, would remain on the DL after he experienced swelling in his injured finger. The hosts will hope for some help from lefty Steven Matz, who gets the nod Saturday opposite Domingo German for the Yankees.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Domingo German (0-4, 5.44 ERA) vs. Mets LH Steven Matz (2-4, 3.42)

German is winless in 17 career appearances (five starts) and has lost each of his last three outings. He gave up four runs in a career-high 6 2/3 frames in a setback at Detroit on Monday. Opponents are hitting .231 against the 25-year-old - who will be making his debut in interleague play - and he has 44 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings overall.

Matz left a start two turns ago due to a finger issue but showed no effects while giving up two runs in a season-high seven innings against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. He struck out seven and yielded five hits in the outing, which left him with a 2.32 ERA since the end of April. The 27-year-old New York native has a 7.63 ERA in three career starts against the city rivals, and all that was before the Yankees added Giancarlo Stanton, who is 4-for-10 with two home runs versus Matz.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes (hip) went 0-for-2 in a rehab game with Double-A Binghamton on Friday.

2. The Yankees have 51 homers in 29 road games, counting the suspended contest with Washington.

3. Mets OF Brandon Nimmo hit a leadoff homer Friday and has six long balls over his last 16 games.
