The major league-worst Baltimore Orioles have lost nine in a row and are in danger of suffering their second straight three-game sweep at home when they host the Miami Marlins on Sunday in the finale of an interleague series. The disappointing Orioles are last in the majors in runs scored and became the first team to reach 50 losses with Saturday's 5-4 setback.

Baltimore did not score more than four runs in any of its last nine games and did not have enough offense to recover on Saturday after the Marlins built a 4-0 lead in the third inning. The Orioles benched struggling first baseman Chris Davis indefinitely before the start of the series, but he is not their only hole in the lineup with Trey Mancini (.223 batting average), Jonathan Schoop (.209), Joey Rickard (.184) and Mark Trumbo (.248) all having a tough time finding consistency at the plate. The Marlins are sitting in last place in the National League East but are looking toward the future and continue to watch the price in trade go up for catcher J.T. Realmuto, who homered twice and drove in four runs on Saturday. Baltimore will try to slow Realmuto and avoid the sweep behind ace Dylan Bundy while Miami counters with righty Trevor Richards.

TV: 1:05 p.m. FS Florida (Miami), MASN2 (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Trevor Richards (1-3, 4.41 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (4-7, 3.66)

Richards earned his first major league win on Tuesday against San Francisco, when he allowed one run on two hits and three walks in six innings. The 25-year-old is in his second stint in the majors this season and lost his first start after being recalled while surrendering three runs over five frames at St. Louis on June 7. Richards made his debut in interleague play against Boston on April 2 and earned a loss while allowing five runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 frames.

Bundy did not give up a run in either of his last two outings but was held out of the decision against Boston on Monday, when he scattered three hits across eight scoreless frames. The Oklahoma native surrendered a total of six hits in 15 innings over his last two turns. Bundy is seeing the Marlins for the first time in his career and is 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA in seven career interleague games - six starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles LHP Richard Bleier will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn left lat on Tuesday.

2. Miami INF Miguel Rojas (left hand) sat out Saturday and is day-to-day.

3. Baltimore CF Adam Jones is 8-for-19 over the last four games.

PREDICTION: Orioles 3, Marlins 2

Jun 17, 2018

The Toronto Blue Jays beat two of the best pitchers in the National League on Friday and Saturday and will try to pull off the three-game sweep when they host the Washington Nationals in the interleague series finale on Sunday. The Blue Jays got the better of Gio Gonzalez and Max Scherzer in the first two games of the series thanks to some strong pitching of their own and a few timely hits.

Toronto second baseman Devon Travis entered the series hitting .205 with two home runs but doubled that total with a blast in each of the first two games while going a combined 4-for-6 to raise his batting average to .229. Blue Jays right-hander Marco Estrada outdueled reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer on Saturday after Aaron Sanchez struck out eight in six solid frames on Friday. The Nationals are losers of four of their last five games and were shut out in three of those four, including a 2-0 setback on Saturday. Washington will try to avoid a sweep behind veteran Tanner Roark while Toronto counters with right-hander Sam Gaviglio.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), TVA, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Tanner Roark (3-7, 3.63 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Sam Gaviglio (2-2, 3.66)

Roark is having a tough time finding run support and suffered a loss at the New York Yankees on Tuesday despite allowing three runs in six solid innings. Washington scored three or fewer runs in eight of the Illinois native's last 10 starts. Roark is seeing Toronto for the first time and is 8-8 with a 3.03 ERA in 21 career interleague games - 18 starts.

Gaviglio struggled through his worst outing of the season at Tampa Bay on Monday, when he allowed five runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over 3 1/3 innings. The 28-year-old tossed seven scoreless innings against the New York Yankees in his previous turn. Gaviglio is seeing Washington for the first time this year and is 1-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three road starts in 2018.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals RF Bryce Harper is 1-for-15 with six strikeouts over his last five games.

2. Toronto LF Steve Pearce (oblique) went 1-for-3 with a walk in his first rehab game for Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday.

3. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy is 1-for-15 in four games since returning from a knee injury.

PREDICTION: Nationals 7, Orioles 3

Jun 16, 2018

The visiting Minnesota Twins look to extend their winning streak against the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians to six when they meet for the finale of a three-game set Sunday afternoon. All-Star candidate Eddie Rosario continued his assault on Cleveland pitching by going 4-for-4 with a homer in Saturday’s 9-3 victory as the Twins crept within four games of first place.

Rosario is 16-for-34 with six homers and 11 RBIs versus the Indians this season - including 6-for-8 in the series - and currently boasts a five-game hitting streak for Minnesota, which has won six of eight contests against Cleveland in 2018. Jake Odorizzi, who has struggled in two starts versus the Indians this year (12 runs, 8 2/3 innings), gets the start in the series finale for the Twins while Cleveland turns to rookie Shane Bieber after scheduled starter Adam Plutko pitched in relief Saturday. The Indians continue their up-and-down season with a four losses in the last five games after going 5-1 to take command of the division. Tyler Naquin, who came off the disabled list Friday, owns a career-best 10-game hitting streak (12-for-30) and Jose Ramirez homered Saturday and has hit safely in eight consecutive contests.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jake Odorizzi (3-3, 4.19 ERA) vs. Indians RH Shane Bieber (0-0, 6.35)

Odorizzi is winless in his last six starts, but allowed three or fewer runs in five of them, including last Tuesday when he yielded two over five innings at Detroit. The 28-year-old Illinois native has not completed more than six innings in any of his 14 outings this year and is averaging fewer than five frames in his last five appearances. Francisco Lindor is 5-for-9 with two doubles and two homers versus Odorizzi, who is 1-2 with a 6.33 ERA in six games against Cleveland.

Bieber, a 2016 fourth-round pick out of California, returns for his second major league start after putting up impressive numbers in the minor leagues. The 23-year-old faced Minnesota in his first big-league outing May 31 when he allowed four runs on eight hits - including homers by Logan Morrison and Eduardo Escobar - and a walk with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Bieber is 6-1 with a 1.29 ERA between Triple-A and Double-A this year with 72 strikeouts over 76 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland RHP Carlos Carrasco was hit by a line drive and suffered a right arm contusion before exiting Saturday’s contest.

2. Escobar, among the league leaders with 27 doubles, owns a six-game hitting streak and is 26-for-65 with 21 RBIs over his last 17 contests.

3. Indians 1B Yonder Alonso (11 homers, 37 RBIs) will miss his third straight game while on the Family Medical Emergency List.

Preview: Padres at Braves
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

One of the key elements of the Atlanta Braves' rise to the top of the National League East is the strength of their starting pitching, and they hope Julio Teheran can continue the rotation’s good work at home entering the finale of a four-game series Sunday against the San Diego Padres. The Braves beat San Diego for the second time in three games Saturday 1-0 as Sean Newcomb spun six scoreless innings, helping Atlanta extend its division lead to 2 1/2 games.

In its past 10 home games, Atlanta starters have posted a 1.09 ERA with eight earned runs allowed in 66 innings pitched with 10 walks, while first baseman Freddie Freeman continues to mash opposing pitchers – extending his hitting streak to 10 games while collecting a hit in 26 of his past 27 games. The Padres were held to four hits, the 11th time this season San Diego has been limited to four hits or fewer in a game. The San Diego bullpen continued its great work Saturday with a scoreless frame and has allowed just four earned runs in its past 26 innings. Catcher A.J. Ellis finished 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to five games and has reached base in 20 of his past 21 games.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, FS South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Matt Strahm (1-2, 2.55 ERA) vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (4-4, 4.31)

San Diego used a bullpen game to knock off the Braves 3-1 on June 6, as five relievers limited the Braves to four hits with 13 strikeouts. The North Dakota native gets the nod again after striking out four while firing three perfect innings in a start Tuesday against St. Louis, and he gave up one run on two hits in another turn against the Braves last week. The Padres' bullpen has allowed only one run on two hits in six innings so far in the series, as Jose Castillo - who got the win against Atlanta in San Diego - struck out three in two scoreless innings Friday.

Teheran comes off the disabled list to start the series finale after missing one turn through the rotation with a right thumb contusion. The 27-year-old has battled inconsistent fastball velocity through his 13 starts of 2018, allowing four or more earned runs five times but holding opponents to two earned runs or fewer on six occasions. Teheran, who is third in the NL with 14 homers allowed, surrendered four runs in a loss at San Diego on June 4, leaving with the thumb injury after four innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Braves LF Charlie Culberson finished with two hits, including a solo homer for the game’s only run Saturday.

2. San Diego 1B Eric Hosmer, who was hitting .303 with two homers in his previous eight games, finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Saturday.

3. Atlanta placed RHP Mike Foltynewicz on the disabled list Saturday with right triceps tightness, but the team is optimistic he will miss just one start.

PREDICTION: Braves 6, Padres 3

Jun 17, 2018

The Pittsburgh Pirates are taking advantage of the cellar-dwelling Cincinnati Reds to get back to .500 and start making some noise in the National League Central. The Pirates will try to continue their ascent up the standings and polish off a three-game sweep when they host the Reds for the finale on Sunday.

Saturday's win clinched a series victory for Pittsburgh, which dropped its previous eight sets. "If somebody would have told me you're going to lose eight series, you'd think you're going to be horrible," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told reporters. "We're not horrible. We're fighting. And we believe that our best baseball is in front of us. You've got to go play it, though." The Reds won three straight before heading to Pittsburgh and scoring a total of four runs in the first two games of the series. Cincinnati will try to provide more support on Sunday for Anthony DeSclafani who opposes fellow right-hander Joe Musgrove.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cincinnati), AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (1-1, 5.40 ERA) vs: Pirates RH Joe Musgrove (2-1, 2.16)

DeSclafani is making his third start this season and surrendered 16 hits along with three walks over 10 innings in his first two outings. The 28-year-old struck out six and earned a win last Sunday against St. Louis despite allowing three runs - two earned - and 10 hits across five innings. DeSclafani is making his seventh start against the Pirates and went 1-2 with a 3.41 ERA in the first six.

Musgrove turned in a quality start at Arizona on Monday but could not come away with a decision after allowing three runs - two earned - and five hits over six innings. The 25-year-old owns 23 strikeouts and five walks over 25 total innings in four starts. Musgrove, who came to the National League over the winter in a trade from the Houston Astros, is seeing the Reds for the first time.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds 1B Joey Votto is 1-for-12 over the last three games, dropping his batting average to .298.

2. Cincinnati is 0-for-19 with runners in scoring position in the series.

3. Pittsburgh 3B Colin Moran scored a run in each of his last four games.

Jun 16, 2018

Yankee Stadium continues to be a house of horrors for the Tampa Bay Rays, who will attempt to avoid a four-game sweep when they visit the New York Yankees on Sunday in the series finale. The slumping Rays have managed to score only four runs in the first three games of the series and have dropped 28 of their last 36 games in the Bronx.

Veteran left-hander CC Sabathia will look to continue a stellar string of pitching for New York, which boasts a major league-best 2.08 ERA while going 13-3 over the last 16 games. Although catcher Gary Sanchez is in a 5-for-58 rut, he is showing signs of emerging from the slumber, clubbing a three-run double in Friday's win before belting a solo homer in Saturday's 4-1 victory. Tampa Bay's only run Saturday came on a solo homer by Matt Duffy in the ninth, ending a scoreless drought of 20 innings. The Rays will try to salvage the series finale behind their bullpen, with right-hander Wilmer Font -- on his third team this season -- designated to make the start.

TV: 2:05 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Wilmer Font (0-3, 8.48 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (4-1, 3.27)

Font is coming off his second-longest outing of the season, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings against Toronto last time out. Austin Pruitt, scheduled to pitch second on Sunday, worked in relief Saturday so the Rays will be hoping that Font can give them some innings. After posting ERAs above 11 in stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland this year, he has a 2.31 ERA in six appearances with Tampa Bay.

Sabathia appears back on track after a rocky four-start stretch, winning back-to-back outings by blanking the Washington Nationals on four hits over 5 2/3 innings on Tuesday. The 37-year-old pitched seven innings of two-run ball at Toronto on June 5 after allowing 20 runs in his previous four turns. Sabathia has made seven starts at Yankee Stadium this season, posting a 2-0 mark and 2.57 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees RF Aaron Judge has gone 2-for-4 in each of the first three games of the series.

2. The Rays placed 3B Christian Arroyo (oblique strain) on the disabled list and will recall SS Adeiny Hechavarria from his rehab assignment.

3. New York is 10-0 when Sanchez homers and 22-0 at home when allowing four runs or fewer.

PREDICTION: Yankees 6, Rays 2

Jun 16, 2018

The Detroit Tigers can establish their longest winning streak of the season and move within a game of .500 for the first time since April 25 when they go for a three-game sweep of the host Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers have won all four games since losing slugger Miguel Cabrera to a season-ending biceps injury.

Nicholas Castellanos entered the series in a 1-for-23 slide but he busted out in a big way Saturday, hitting a three-run homer and a two-run blast in Detroit's 7-5 victory. Victor Martinez, who has hit safely in three straight games following a 4-for-31 tailspin, collected three hits Saturday at the Tigers improved to 6-1 against the White Sox this season. Rookie Charlie Tilson extended his hitting streak to seven games with a two-run single for Chicago, which lost its third in a row despite erasing a five-run deficit. The White Sox, who saw their four-series unbeaten streak snapped in Saturday's setback, send veteran James Shield to the mound to oppose Blaine Hardy in a pitching rematch from three weeks ago.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers Blaine Hardy (2-1, 3.55 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (2-7, 4.63)

This could be Hardy's final outing as a member of the starter rotation as he is scheduled to move back to the bullpen when Francisco Liriano returns from his rehab stint. He had another strong effort in a no-decision last time out versus Minnesota, giving up two runs on three hits while going at least six innings for the fourth straight time. Hardy beat Chicago with seven innings of one-run ball on May 27.

Shields ended a 2 1/2-month winless drought, earning his first victory since March 29 by limiting Cleveland to one run and four hits over seven innings on Tuesday. It marked the 10th straight start in which he pitched at least six innings, including a loss at Detroit on May 27 in which he gave up three runs in seven innings. Shields has pitched well at home, allowing 10 runs over his last five starts there.

WALK-OFFS

1. Castellanos is 12-for-35 against the White Sox this season.

2. Yolmer Sánchez had his majors-leading eighth triple, the first Chicago player with eight before the All-Star break since 1994 (Lance Johnson).

3. Tigers RHP Shane Greene has six strikeouts while recording saves in four straight days.

PREDICTION: Tigers 4, White Sox 3

Jun 16, 2018

Rhys Hoskins is starting to warm up again after a rough May, along with a stint on the disabled list, and hopes to keep it going as his Philadelphia Phillies visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon for the rubber match of a three-game set. Hoskins went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo homer Saturday as the Phillies recorded a 4-1 victory to even the series and improve to 4-2 in their last six outings.

The 25-year-old Hoskins batted .161 during May before missing nine games with a fractured jaw, but is 9-for-25 with three homers, two doubles and nine RBIs in seven contests since returning from the DL. Standout right-hander Aaron Nola will go for his team-leading ninth victory when he takes the mound in the series finale for Philadelphia while Milwaukee counters with Chase Anderson, who goes for back-to-back victories. The National League Central-leading Brewers saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday as they managed just four singles and a double after scoring 13 times in the series opener. Lorenzo Cain was 1-for-4 in the loss for Milwaukee, but has multiple hits in seven of his last 10 games, raising his batting average from .273 to .289.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (8-2, 2.27 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Chase Anderson (5-5, 4.13)

Nola has followed up his second loss of the season on May 20 with four consecutive quality starts while allowing six runs across 26 1/3 innings combined. The 25-year-old LSU product limited Colorado to one run on four hits over 6 2/3 innings last Tuesday, reaching double figures in strikeouts for the third time since May 8 with 10. Christian Yelich is 6-for-16 with a homer versus Nola, who is 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA in four career starts against Milwaukee.

Anderson held the Chicago Cubs to one hit and two walks over seven scoreless innings of a 4-0 victory last Tuesday after suffering two straight losses. The 30-year-old Texan has not given up a home run in his last three trips to the mound after serving up 13 in his first 10 appearances of 2018. Maikel Franco is 4-for-8 with a pair of homers against Anderson, who is 1-2 with a 5.85 ERA in four career contests versus the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yelich has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games and is batting .382 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in victories this year.

2. Philadelphia placed Luis Garcia on the 10-day DL, optioned fellow RHP Mark Leiter Jr. to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled RHPs Yacksel Rios and Jake Thompson.

3. Brewers INF-OF Hernan Perez is 4-for-6 the last two games with a solo home run after going 1-for-4 in the previous series against the Phillies.

The Houston Astros will try to complete a perfect road trip and extend their winning streak to 11 contests when they finish a three-game series at the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. Alex Bregman and Max Stassi hit three-run homers to lead the Astros to a 10-2 win in Saturday's matchup, which pushed Houston to within one victory of matching last season's longest streak.

"I'm really happy with how consistently the guys are showing up expecting to win, and then going out and doing it," Houston manager A.J. Hinch told reporters after his team improved to 10-0 on the trip. "We're a hard team to beat right now." The Astros' 11-game run last season came to an end in Kansas City, but the current Royals are a struggling bunch and have lost 11 of their last 12. Whit Merrifield remains one of Kansas City's few bright spots and he had two hits, a stolen base and an RBI in Saturday's loss. Houston seeks the 11th straight win behind Lance McCullers Jr., who will be opposed by rookie Brad Keller for the Royals.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (8-3, 3.83 ERA) vs. Royals RH Brad Keller (1-2, 2.31)

McCullers lasted seven innings for the fifth time in 2018 in a win at Oakland on Tuesday, limiting the Athletics to two runs and five hits. He kept the ball in the park for the eighth time in his last 10 starts while lowering his road ERA to 5.02. Salvador Perez is 2-for-6 with two home runs against McCullers, who boasts a 2.14 mark in three career starts versus the Royals.

Keller's transition to the rotation has been relatively smooth, although he surrendered five hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings at Oakland last Sunday. He was able to escape with a no-decision after yielding two runs and owns a 2.84 ERA in three starts. The 22-year-old, who is facing the Astros for the first time, allowed three runs in 13 innings at home in 2018.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston is an MLB-best 28-11 on the road.

2. Bregman is 3-for-8 with two homers and five RBIs in the series.

3. Perez is 0-for-4 in each of his last three games.

The Texas Rangers turn to old friend Yovani Gallardo as they take on the visiting Colorado Rockies in the rubber match of a three-game set Sunday afternoon. Gallardo, who won 13 games with the Rangers in 2015, is back with his former team after signing a free-agent deal in April and making 10 starts in the minors.

His new team produced 10 hits in a 5-2 win over the Rockies in Saturday's matchup, snapping a seven-game losing streak. Adrian Beltre broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run triple and the 39-year-old is 11-for-18 during a five-game hitting streak. He has never faced Colorado right-hander Jon Gray, who gets the nod in the series finale against Gallardo. The Rockies are losers of 11 of their last 15 and will hope for more from the top of their lineup, which saw the first four hitters combine to go 1-for-15 with four strikeouts in Saturday's loss.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (6-7, 5.68 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yovani Gallardo (0-0, 30.86)

Gray has struggled of late but showed signs of a turnaround Tuesday at Philadelphia, yielding three hits and striking out 10 over six innings while giving up four runs. He blanked the Los Angeles Angels over seven innings in his only interleague start this year. The 26-year-old, who has never faced the Rangers, is 4-1 with a 3.14 ERA in seven career starts versus American League opponents.

Gallardo had three relief appearances with the Cincinnati Reds earlier in the year - giving up eight runs and eight hits with four walks over just 2 1/3 innings - before he was let go. The 32-year-old, who spent 2017 with the Seattle Mariners, was 2-1 with a 3.81 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A Round Rock prior to his promotion. He is 0-6 with a 6.14 ERA in 12 career games (11 starts) against Colorado.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies 1B Ian Desmond is 4-for-8 with two homers, three runs scored and two RBIs in the series.

2. Rangers SS Jurickson Profar has scored 13 runs over his last 16 games.

3. Colorado is 57-111 on the road in interleague play since it began in 1997.

The Oakland Athletics finally kept an opponent under six runs on Saturday, ending a pair of losing streaks in the process. Oakland looks to break even on its 10-game homestand when it faces the Los Angeles Angels in the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday.

The Athletics, who allowed a total of 34 runs during a four-game overall slide, ended that skid - and a six-gamer against American League West rivals - with Saturday's 6-4 triumph. Chad Pinder went 3-for-3 with a homer and scored three times as Oakland remained the only team in the majors that is unbeaten when leading after seven innings, improving to 26-0 in such contests. Former Athletic Chris Young belted a three-run shot in the setback as Los Angeles fell to 3-5 on its nine-game road trip. Mike Trout was held without an RBI for the first time in five contests but went 1-for-3 and crossed the plate once as he improved to 11-for-17 with seven runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Andrew Heaney (3-5, 3.68 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (6-6, 3.90)

After tossing a one-hit shutout against Kansas City in his previous start, Heaney lasted only three innings at Seattle on Monday as he was tagged for five runs and seven hits - three homers - en route to his third loss in four decisions. The 27-year-old native of Oklahoma has pitched well this season at home, posting a 2.35 ERA as opposed to a 5.68 mark on the road. Heaney has made three career starts against Oakland, going 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA.

Mengden posted a stellar 1.51 ERA over six starts last month but has struggled mightily in June thus far, surrendering 12 runs over 8 2/3 innings in two outings - both losses. The 25-year-old Texan has issued seven walks in the setbacks after handing out a total of eight free passes in his first 12 turns of the year. Mengden has yielded 14 runs (13 earned) over 8 2/3 frames while losing both of his career starts against the Angels, including a setback in his season debut on March 31 in which he gave up six runs (five earned) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Athletics sent OF Boog Powell (knee) and LHP Ryan Buchter (shoulder) to Triple-A Nashville on Saturday to continue their rehab assignments.

2. Los Angeles activated SS Andrelton Simmons, who went 0-for-4 on Saturday, from the 10-day disabled list and purchased the contract of LHP John Lamb, who allowed two runs in five innings, from Triple-A Salt Lake while optioning SS Nolan Fontana to the Bees and designating RHP Oliver Drake for assignment.

3. Oakland placed 3B Matt Chapman (thumb) on the 10-day DL and optioned RHP Carlos Ramirez to Nashville while recalling 2B Franklin Barreto, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Saturday, and RHP Josh Lucas from the Sounds.

Preview: Red Sox at Mariners
Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

No team has played nearly as many one-run games as the Seattle Mariners have this season, and they have established time and again they are comfortable in tight spots. After notching consecutive one-run victories in the showdown between two of the American League's best teams, the Mariners eye their 23rd win in 29 outings Sunday, when they host the finale of their four-game series with the Boston Red Sox.

Wade LeBlanc worked 7 2/3 scoreless innings - retiring 22 batters in a row after allowing a single to begin the game - and Seattle got all the offense it needed when Nelson Cruz hit the last of three singles in the third inning to drive in the only run in Saturday's 1-0 triumph. In addition to remaining one-half game behind red-hot Houston in the AL West, the Mariners improved to 23-10 in one-run affairs. Boston began its 10-game road trip earlier this week with a three-game sweep of Baltimore before handing Seattle a taste of its own medicine with a one-run victory on Thursday, but back-to-back defeats have caused it to fall one game behind the New York Yankees in the AL East. Outside of a six-run third inning in Friday's 7-6 setback, the Red Sox's offense has been virtually nonexistent at Safeco Field, scoring a total of two runs - including none over the last 15 innings.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (8-1, 3.64 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Mike Leake (7-3, 4.26)

Rodriguez has yielded fewer than three runs while winning each of his last five turns but managed to produce only one quality start over that time as a result of going over the 100-pitch mark each time. Such was the case again for the 25-year-old Venezuelan in Tuesday's victory at Baltimore, where he permitted two runs on eight hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Jean Segura is 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles against Rodriguez, who is 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA in three career starts versus Seattle.

Leake has registered five consecutive quality starts and won for the third time during that stretch Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels, giving up only a solo homer among the four hits he allowed in six frames. After going 3-2 with a 6.48 ERA in April, the Arizona State product is 4-1 with a 2.87 mark in eight trips to the mound since. Xander Bogaerts is 4-for-9 versus Leake, who gave up 10 runs in two starts versus Boston last season and is 0-2 with a 6.56 ERA in four career outings against the Red Sox.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Mariners' 33 one-run games are five more than another team has played, while their 23 victories in such contests are seven more than second-place Milwaukee.

2. Regardless of Sunday's outcome, Boston will leave Safeco Field without a series win in its last five trips to the venue.

3. Seattle (46-25) is 21 games over .500 for the first time since the final game of the 2003 season.

Gracenote
Jun 17, 2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks were bound to come up with a lackluster performance after tearing up opposing pitchers for more than a week. Arizona looks to bounce back from such an outing when it hosts the New York Mets on Sunday for the finale of their four-game series.

The Diamondbacks won seven of eight contests, scoring at least six runs in each victory, before recording only six hits in Saturday's 5-1 setback. David Peralta and Paul Goldschmidt each went 0-for-4 to end their 11- and seven-game hitting streaks, respectively, although the latter drove in Arizona's lone run to give him 15 RBIs over his last 10 contests. Michael Conforto registered a double, a homer and four RBIs for the Mets as he matched his hits total from the previous nine games. Brandon Nimmo has hit safely in seven of his last nine contests for New York, which is 1-4 on its 10-game road trip that concludes with four games in Colorado.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Zack Wheeler (2-5, 4.98 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Clay Buchholz (1-1, 3.21)

Wheeler produced two strong outings and came away empty-handed before struggling in Atlanta on Tuesday. The 28-year-old native of Georgia was tagged by the Braves for six runs on eight hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings as he lost his fourth consecutive decision. Wheeler has made nine starts against Atlanta in his career, going 4-3 with a 3.62 ERA.

Buchholz is coming off the worst of his five starts this season, but escaped with a no-decision after surrendering six runs (five earned) and seven hits over four innings against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. The 33-year-old Texan walked two batters in the outing after issuing only three free passes over 24 frames in his first four turns. Buchholz has yet to defeat the Mets in his career, going 0-1 while yielding seven runs over 7 1/3 innings in two starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets OF Jay Bruce (back/hip) hopes to return Sunday after missing the last three games.

2. Arizona RHP Shelby Miller (shoulder) was sent to Class A Visalia on Saturday to continue his rehab assignment.

3. New York is expected to activate RHP Jeurys Familia (shoulder) from the disabled list prior to Sunday's contest.
