Gracenote
May 3, 2018

Former MVP Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals may be starting to find their top form as they vie for a four-game sweep against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday afternoon. Harper has homered twice and knocked in six runs in his last two games while the Nationals have won four straight contests, outscoring their opponents 27-10 in that stretch, and can reach .500 for the first time since April 20 with a win.

Matt Adams also remained hot with his third homer in two days in Washington’s 9-3 triumph on Wednesday, and the first baseman has gone 11-for-20 with four blasts and 11 RBIs over a six-game span to raise his batting average to .316. Newcomer Jeremy Hellickson will try to extend the winning streak and earn his first victory for the Nationals while Pittsburgh counters with Trevor Williams, who is off to the best start of his career. The Pirates had won five straight games before visiting Washington, where they have been outscored 24-9 in the first three games of the series. Francisco Cervelli may get a day off with an afternoon game coming after a night contest, but the veteran catcher’s bat may be needed as he is 7-for-16 during a five-game hitting streak - including a solo homer on Wednesday.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Trevor Williams (4-1, 2.29 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Jeremy Hellickson (0-0, 4.11)

Williams has yielded fewer than three runs in all six trips to the mound this year - including the one on Saturday, when he limited St. Louis to two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings for his fourth win. The 26-year-old Arizona State product has worked exactly six frames in five of his starts and did not give up more than four hits in those outings. Williams, who owns a 1.50 ERA in three road starts in 2018, made a relief appearance against Washington in 2016 and gave up one run on a hit and two walks while retiring two batters.

Hellickson has given his team a chance to win in each of his first three starts, allowing a total of seven runs, but has not lasted more than 5 2/3 innings in any of them. The 31-year-old native of Iowa, who is 69-69 in 207 career appearances (200 starts), has permitted 15 hits - seven for extra bases - over 15 1/3 frames this season. Gregory Polanco is 4-for-11 with a homer versus Hellickson, who is 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA in five career games against the Pirates.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pittsburgh SS Jordy Mercer went 0-for-4 on Wednesday to end his eight-game hitting streak.

2. Washington INF Wilmer Difo is 8-for-14 with a homer and three RBIs during his five-game hitting streak.

3. Pirates OF Corey Dickerson recorded two RBIs in Wednesday’s loss and is 14-for-39 with three homers in his last 11 contests.

PREDICTION: Pirates 4, Nationals 3

May 2, 2018

The Atlanta Braves wrap up a 10-game road trip Thursday with the series finale at the New York Mets, and do so occupying a position in the standings where they have not been this late in the season since 2014: first place in the National League East. Facing the top of the New York rotation in the opening two games of the series did not faze the surprising Braves, who jumped all over the Mets in Wednesday’s 7-0 victory behind a combined six hits from Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis.

Ender Inciarte, Johan Camargo and Ryan Flaherty homered for the Braves, who got an outstanding start from Sean Newcomb one day after Mike Soroka dominated in his major-league debut. The Mets left Wednesday’s game with lots of concern for starting pitcher Jacob deGrom, who struck out six in four innings before exiting with a hyperextended right elbow. Yoenis Cespedes finished 1-for-4 and has seven hits in his past 11 at-bats. But the Mets have lost a second series to division rival Atlanta, and are just 6-10 since starting the season with 11 wins in their first 12 games.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Julio Teheran (1-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. Mets LH Jason Vargas (0-1, 22.09)

The Braves will watch Teheran closely considering he left Friday’s start at Philadelphia after just three innings with tightness in his trap (back) muscle, throwing only 43 pitches in allowing three runs. That shortened outing followed Teheran’s best effort of the season, an April 21 home game against the Mets where the 27-year-old gave up four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in seven innings. Teheran is holding opposing hitters to a .236 average, but has allowed six homers in 30 innings.

The 35-year-old Vargas hopes Thursday’s start - the 250th appearance in his major-league career - goes better than his Mets debut. Vargas threw 84 pitches in 3 2/3 innings, getting hammered for nine runs on nine hits (including two homers) with three walks and five strikeouts in a loss Saturday at San Diego. Vargas, an 18-game winner during an All-Star season last year in Kansas City, has two career appearances against the Braves - the last in 2006.

WALK-OFFS

1. Freeman collected his second three-hit game of the road trip and has hit safely in nine of his last 10 contests, while Markakis extended his hitting streak to nine games.

2. Atlanta SS Dansby Swanson, who is 6-for-35 with 12 strikeouts on the road trip, was removed in the sixth inning for precautionary reasons (wrist).

3. New York RF Jay Bruce went 0-for-3 Wednesday, snapping his hitting streak at eight games.

PREDICTION: Braves 5, Mets 2

May 2, 2018

Edwin Encarnacion is still batting below the Mendoza line, but he warmed up for a meeting against his former teammates by cranking out three home runs in the Cleveland Indians' 12-4 rout of the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Encarnacion and the Indians look to keep the offense percolating when they host the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday in a make-up doubleheader.

Encarnacion swatted 193 homers in five seasons with Toronto prior to belting 38 last year for Cleveland, which is only 4-5 entering the final day of its 11-game homestand. "We've all seen how hot he can get," said Indians manager Terry Francona of Encarnacion, "where he can kind of put you on his shoulders a little bit." Toronto came up short in a bid for a sweep in Minnesota, dropping the series finale to snap a three-game winning streak in which it scored seven runs in each of the victories. Kevin Pillar had a pair of hits in Wednesday's 4-0 loss and is 11-for-24 with three homers, five doubles, a triple and six RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Jaime García (2-2, 5.40 ERA) vs. Indians RH Carlos Carrasco (4-1, 3.08)

Garcia, who was scheduled to start one of the postponed games against the Indians, lost his second straight outing after giving up five runs on five hits over five innings versus Texas last time out. He has not pitched beyond 5 1/3 innings since his season debut and continues to struggle with the long ball, surrendering seven homers in five starts. Jose Ramirez is 3-for-6 against Garcia, who has lost both starts versus Cleveland.

Carrasco suffered his first loss last time out, lasting only three innings due to back tightness and permitting a pair of homers and five runs. That ended a string of four consecutive quality starts in which the 31-year-old Venezuelan allowed a combined four runs and 17 hits over 29 1/3 innings. Curtis Granderson is 5-for-12 against Carrasco, who blanked the Blue Jays on three hits over seven innings in his lone start against them in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays 3B Josh Donaldson (shoulder), on the disabled list since April 10, is expected to be activated Thursday.

2. Indians SS Francisco Lindor was 8-for-16 with a homer and six RBIs in three games versus Texas.

3. Granderson was 0-for-9 with seven strikeouts in the three-game set at Minnesota.

PREDICTION: Indians 6, Blue Jays 3

Preview: Yankees at Astros
Gracenote
May 3, 2018

The New York Yankees' pitching staff has been outstanding of late and hopes to continue the trend Thursday afternoon against the host Houston Astros in the finale of their four-game set. New York, which has won 11 of 12, has allowed a total of four runs in its last five contests and only two over the first three games of this series, both of which came in a loss in the opener.

The Yankees had six pitchers combine on a six-hit shutout on Tuesday before Luis Severino recorded 10 strikeouts while allowing five hits en route to his first career complete game, with both games being 4-0 victories. Giancarlo Stanton drove in all four runs on Wednesday, recording an RBI double in the eighth inning to complement his first two-homer performance since the season opener in Toronto. Houston looks to avoid losing three straight for the second time this year and break even on its 10-game homestand. Jose Altuve went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to seven games and give him at least one hit in 14 of his last 15 contests.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (4-2, 4.37 ERA) vs. Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (4-1, 3.71)

Tanaka appears to have recovered from a rough stretch in mid-April as he has allowed two runs and five hits over 12 2/3 innings in his last two starts - both victories. The 29-year-old native of Japan registered a season-high nine strikeouts over six frames at the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday, giving up just a solo homer and a single. Tanaka went 1-1 against Houston in last year's American League Championship Series but has yet to defeat them during the regular season, going 0-2 with a ghastly 10.38 ERA in four starts.

McCullers has been sensational since being tagged for eight runs on seven hits and six walks in 3 2/3 innings at Minnesota on April 11, allowing two runs and two walks with 21 strikeouts over 20 frames in his last three starts. The 24-year-old Floridian limited Oakland to two hits and fanned seven over seven scoreless innings in a victory on Saturday. McCullers did not record a decision in one start and one relief appearance versus the Yankees in the 2017 ALCS but is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three regular-season turns against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Yankees placed LHP Jordan Montgomery (elbow) - who will miss 6-8 weeks - on the 10-day disabled list, transferred OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) to the 60-day DL, activated OF Clint Frazier from the seven-day concussion DL and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and purchased the contract of RHP David Hale from the RailRiders.

2. Altuve has gone hitless in only four of his 32 games this season.

3. New York SS Didi Gregorius was named the AL Player of the Month for April after hitting .327 while leading the junior circuit in homers (10), RBIs (30) and slugging percentage (.735).

PREDICTION: Astros 7, Yankees 3

Gracenote
May 2, 2018

The Detroit Tigers escaped with a series victory following - of all things - a walk-off bunt down the first-base line while the Kansas City Royals effectively were done in by a trio of homers by the same player. The Tigers (13-16) vie for the third straight win on Thursday afternoon when they open a four-game series versus the American League Central-rival Royals (8-22) at Kauffman Stadium.

John Hicks' alert bunt caught both Tampa Bay infielders and Detroit's JaCoby Jones by surprise, but the latter was able to score from third base in Wednesday afternoon's 3-2 victory. The furious finish capped a three-hit performance for the 25-year-old Jones, who is 7-for-21 in his last five games overall and 5-for-15 with two homers and five RBIs in the season series versus Kansas City. The clubs have split six encounters thus far, with Royals third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert going a robust 7-for-22 with four runs scored in that span. The 25-year-old Nicaraguan went deep for the third time in four days with a solo homer in Wednesday's 5-4 setback to Boston, but Mookie Betts launched a trio of solo shots to send Kansas City to its seventh loss in 10 outings.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Mike Fiers (2-2, 3.91 ERA) vs. Royals LH Eric Skoglund (1-2, 6.23)

Fiers improved to 2-3 with a 4.55 ERA in his career against Kansas City despite allowing four runs (two earned) on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 12-4 win on April 21. The 32-year-old answered that performance six days later by surrendering two homers for the second time in three outings to take the loss in a 6-0 setback at Baltimore. Lucas Duda (5-for-10), Alcides Escobar (7-for-16) and Mike Moustakas (5-for-11) have enjoyed their fair share of success versus Fiers, who is allowing the current Royals roster to bat .333 against him.

Skoglund recorded career-best numbers in both strikeouts (nine) and innings pitched (seven) on Saturday as he picked up his first win in nearly a calendar year with a 5-2 triumph over the Chicago White Sox. The 25-year-old allowed just one run on two hits in that encounter, although he was taken deep for the third time in four outings. Skoglund, who has limited the Tigers' roster to a .171 batting average, has flummoxed left-handed batters this season (.167) while right-handers are a more respectable .257.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit 1B Miguel Cabrera could return to the lineup following a three-game absence due to a biceps strain.

2. Kansas City C Drew Butera has a double in back-to-back contests after going just 2-for-17 with seven strikeouts in his previous six games.

3. Tigers C James McCann has 17 hits over his last 13 contests after mustering five in his previous nine.

PREDICTION: Tigers 6, Royals 2

Preview: Dodgers at Diamondbacks
Gracenote
May 3, 2018

The Los Angeles Dodgers are just 2-7 in the season series but have an opportunity to salvage a split of their four-game set with the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon. Los Angeles lost the first two games of the matchup before recording a 2-1 victory on Wednesday.

Despite the setback, a triumph on Thursday would give Arizona 10 consecutive series wins to begin the season, which would be one shy of the major-league record held by the 1907 Chicago Cubs. Wednesday's victory halted a four-game slide for Los Angeles, which has won just two of its last nine contests. Cody Bellinger recorded two hits and an RBI for his fourth multi-hit performance in eight games. Arizona slugger Paul Goldschmidt is in the midst of a 15-game home run drought but has gone deep three times against scheduled Thursday starter Alex Wood, while teammate A.J. Pollock is 8-for-19 with two homers and three doubles versus Wood.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, Facebook Watch

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Alex Wood (0-3, 4.11 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (4-0, 2.25)

Wood remained winless on the season when he gave up four runs and six hits in a setback against San Francisco in his last turn. The 27-year-old has been superb with his control, walking just three and striking out 30 in 35 innings. Wood lost to the Diamondbacks on April 4, when he allowed three runs and six hits over six frames, and is 5-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 13 career appearances (nine starts) against Arizona.

Corbin did not factor in the decision against Washington in his last turn after allowing three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old has been flat-out dominant by holding opponents to a .165 average while striking out 55 against just seven walks in 40 frames. Corbin allowed just one hit and struck out 12 in 7 1/3 innings while beating Los Angeles on April 4 but is just 4-9 with a 4.05 ERA in 17 career appearances (15 starts) against the Dodgers.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers halted their eight-game regular-season losing streak at Chase Field with Wednesday's victory.

2. Pollock was named National League Player of the Month for March/April after batting .291 with nine homers and 24 RBIs.

3. Los Angeles LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (groin) departed Wednesday's game in the second inning.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 3

Kevin Pillar had a pair of hits in Wednesday's 4-0 loss and is 11-for-24 with three homers, five doubles a triple and six RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

TV: 4:40 p.m. ET, Sportsnet1 (Toronto), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Joe Biagini (0-0, 4.76 ERA) vs. Indians RH Adam Plutko (NR)

Biagino, who will be recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to make Thursday's start, also was summoned from the minors to pitch the nightcap of a doubleheader against Kansas City on April 17. He turned in a credible performance, working 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in a no-decision. Biagini posted a 3-13 record with a 5.34 ERA in 44 appearances last season, including 18 starts.

Plutko has made only two appearances in the majors, both in relief late in September 2016. He dealt with a hip injury that eventually required surgery last year but is coming off the best performance of his career, throwing 7 2/3 innings of perfect ball at Triple-A Columbus before he was removed. Plutko served up three homers in his previous outing and is 3-2 with a 2.35 ERA in five starts for the Clippers.

WALK-OFFS

2. Indians SS Francisco Lindor was 8-for-16 with a homer and six RBIs in three games versus Texas.

May 2, 2018

Mookie Betts returned from a brief absence and showed what a difference-maker he can be at the top of the Boston Red Sox's lineup, etching his name in the record books along the way. The Red Sox, who own the best record in the majors following Betts' three-homer eruption on Wednesday, begin a 10-game road trip with the first of four at the Texas Rangers on Thursday night.

Betts, out of the starting lineup the previous three days due to hamstring tightness, became the youngest player in history with four three-homer games while also eclipsing the franchise record held by the immortal Ted Williams. "Well, that was obviously a great performance," Boston manager Alex Cora said after Betts went 4-for-4 to raise his batting average to .365. "He's doing an outstanding job being ready to hit from the get-go and setting the tempo for the team." The Red Sox took two of three against one last-place club in Kansas City and face another in Texas, which was mauled at Cleveland 12-4 on Wednesday to finish 3-3 on a six-game road trip. The Rangers won the last meeting against Boston at home on July 5, ending a six-game winning streak in the series in which the Red Sox amassed 55 runs.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (2-3, 3.78 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Mike Minor (2-1, 4.33)

Price opened the season by tossing 14 scoreless innings in his first two starts, but he has been knocked around in losing each of his last two outings. He was reached for four runs on nine hits in a season-high 7 2/3 innings at Oakland on April 22 before Tampa Bay battered him for six runs over 5 2/3 innings last time out. Adrian Beltre (14-for-41) and Shin-Soo Choo have each homered twice off Price, who is 4-5 with a 5.11 ERA versus Texas.

Minor has been shaky on the road but solid at home, posting a 1-1 mark and allowing four runs in his three starts at Globe Life Park. The 30-year-old earned the win at Toronto last time out despite yielding four runs on nine hits over six innings, after pitching 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a no-decision in his previous turn versus Seattle. Minor has made six appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox, going 0-2 with a 3.63 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. Betts was only 5-for-26 in six games versus the Rangers last year but is batting .310 lifetime against them.

2. Rangers RF Nomar Mazara has homered in back-to-back games and has eight RBIs in his last seven contests.

3. Red Sox OF J.D. Martinez has multiple hits in five of the past seven games.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 6, Rangers 4

Preview: Twins at White Sox
Gracenote
May 2, 2018

One might understand the reluctance of the Minnesota Twins to pack a suitcase considering they have just three road wins to their credit and a fruitless seven-game stretch still fresh in their minds. The Twins (10-16) look to change the narrative as they begin a 10-game trek on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series versus the Chicago White Sox (8-20).

Eddie Rosario homered in his second straight game on Wednesday as Minnesota posted just its second win in 13 outings with a 4-0 victory over Toronto. The 26-year-old went 5-for-12 with four RBIs in the series to improve to 9-for-25 with six RBIs and six runs scored in his last six outings. Like the Twins, the White Sox aren't singing any tunes on the road as they ended what started as a promising seven-game trek with back-to-back 3-2 setbacks in St. Louis to extend their losing streak to four games. Yolmer Sanchez recorded his sixth multi-hit performance in his last 13 outings for Chicago, which has dropped 13 of 17 to fall a season-high 12 games under .500.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS North (Minnesota), CS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jake Odorizzi (2-2, 3.94 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Reynaldo Lopez (0-2, 1.78)

Odorizzi rebounded from a pair of turbulent outings to even his record on Saturday after allowing one run on five hits in six innings of a 3-1 triumph over Cincinnati. The 28-year-old emerged victorious despite serving up a solo homer to Scott Schebler in the first inning, marking the sixth time he's been taken deep in his last three outings. Avisail Garcia is the lone member of the White Sox to belt a homer off Odorizzi, with the right-hander limiting the current roster to just a 6-for-28 performance at the plate.

Lopez was able to walk away with his second straight no-decision on Friday after allowing season highs in both runs (four) and hits (10) at Kansas City. The 24-year-old Dominican can take a positive from that encounter as he did not walk a batter after issuing 13 free passes in his previous three outings. Lopez has yet to face Minnesota in his career, but Logan Morrison has a homer among two hits in three at-bats versus right-hander.

WALK-OFFS

1. Minnesota 1B Joe Mauer registered his 2,000th career hit in a 4-0 triumph over Chicago on April 12, although the final three contests of the four-game series were postponed due to inclement weather.

2. The White Sox are 3-9 in one-run contests heading into Thursday's opener of a six-game homestand.

3. Twins CF Byron Buxton will join the team on the upcoming trek, but he has yet to be cleared after being placed on the disabled list with migraine headaches.

PREDICTION: Twins 4, White Sox 3

Preview: Orioles at Angels
Gracenote
May 3, 2018

Albert Pujols is just two hits away from reaching 3,000 for his career as the Los Angeles Angels look to complete a three-game sweep against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Pujols went 2-for-4 with a homer in Wednesday's 10-7 victory to move closer to becoming the 32nd player to reach the milestone.

Wednesday's homer was the 620th of Pujols' career as he prepares to join Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez as the only players with at least 3,000 hits and 600 blasts. Angels star Mike Trout clubbed his 11th homer of the season on Wednesday and is tied with Boston's Mookie Betts for most in the majors. While Los Angeles is showing life after ending a 3-9 stretch, Baltimore has floundered all season and has lost eight of its last 10 games. Chris Davis recorded two hits on Wednesday in his first start since April 27, raising his average to a season-high .179.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Chris Tillman (1-4, 7.03 ERA) vs. Angels RH Jaime Barria (1-1, 3.86)

Tillman was superb while defeating Detroit in his last outing as he allowed just one hit over seven scoreless innings. The 30-year-old had dropped 11 consecutive decisions dating back to May 7 before breaking the skid in stellar fashion. Tillman is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in six career starts against the Angels and has enjoyed good success against Trout (2-for-12) while struggling with Ian Kinsler (8-for-26, two homers).

Barria will be recalled prior to Thursday's game to make his third start of the season. The 21-year-old gave up two runs and five hits in two-plus innings on April 22 against San Francisco in his last turn. Barria defeated Texas in his major-league debut on April 11, when he allowed one run and one hit - a homer by Ryan Rua - in five frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels RHP Shohei Ohtani (ankle) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday, but the team hasn't yet decided when he will make his next start.

2. Orioles C Chance Sisco (nose) sat out Wednesday but avoided a concussion in his collision with 3B Pedro Alvarez while pursuing a foul pop-up the previous night.

3. Los Angeles RHP Nick Tropeano (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list and INF Ryan Schimpf was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.

PREDICTION: Angels 7, Orioles 5

Preview: Athletics at Mariners
Gracenote
May 3, 2018

The Oakland Athletics used a late power surge to even the series and look to finish their road trip with a winning record when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Thursday for the finale of their three-game set. Oakland dropped the opener and was on its way to a fourth straight loss Wednesday until Jed Lowrie belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Mark Canha launched a solo shot in the ninth for a 3-2 victory.

Canha finished 3-for-4, giving him hits in 12 of his last 13 contests, as the Athletics improved to 4-4 on their nine-game trek. Dee Gordon continued swinging a hot bat on Wednesday, going 2-for-5 as Seattle squandered a 2-0 lead en route to having its three-game winning streak come to an end. Gordon has registered four consecutive multi-hit performances, going 13-for-19 in that span - including 7-for-10 in this series. The Mariners are seeking their second series win over Oakland this season after taking two of three at home from April 13-15.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Oakland), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics LH Sean Manaea (4-2, 1.03 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (0-0, 4.61)

Manaea, who was named the first American League Pitcher of the Month in 2018, hopes to continue his amazing season as he looks to win his fourth consecutive start and allow fewer than three runs for the seventh time in as many turns this year. The 26-year-old native of Indiana followed up his no-hitter against Boston on April 21 with a stellar effort at Houston on Friday in which he gave up an unearned run and four hits over seven innings. Manaea improved to 4-3 with a 3.88 ERA in eight career starts against the Mariners on April 15, when he yielded one run and two hits over seven frames in Seattle.

LeBlanc will start for the first time in 2018 after making five relief appearances as he fills in for the injured Erasmo Ramirez. The 33-year-old LeBlanc has not made a start in the major leagues since 2016, when he took eight turns for Seattle during his first stint with the team. The native of Louisiana, who went 5-2 for Pittsburgh out of the bullpen last year, is 2-0 with a 4.98 ERA in five career outings (three starts) against the Athletics.

WALK-OFFS

1. Lowrie has gone deep in each of the first two contests of the series, marking the third time this season he has homered in back-to-back games.

2. Seattle RHP Edwin Diaz was named The Hartford AL Reliever of the Month for March/April after posting a 0.63 ERA and holding opponents to a .043 batting average while converting all 11 of his save opportunities.

3. Oakland recalled LHP Brett Anderson from Triple-A Nashville prior to Wednesday's game and optioned RHP Emilio Pagan to the Sounds.

PREDICTION: Athletics 5, Mariners 2
