Miami Marlins vs. Washington Nationals Preview and Predictions 07-05-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 4th July 2018 by Gracenote
Marlins vs. Nationals Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/04/2018

The Washington Nationals were penciled in as heavy preseason favorites to run away with the National League East title, but that hardly has been the case a little more than halfway into the campaign. Losers of a season high-tying five in a row and 17 of their last 22, the Nationals hope to get back on track Thursday, when they open a four-game series against the visiting Miami Marlins.

"Let's get this thing going. I think we all know we're capable of playing better baseball. It's time we do it. It's do or die now," Trea Turner told reporters following Washington's players-only meeting after being unceremoniously swept by Boston with Wednesday's 3-0 setback. Turner recorded his second straight multi-hit performance in the defeat to improve to 13-for-32 with seven runs scored in his last seven contests for the Nationals, who reside seven full games behind division-leading Atlanta. Starlin Castro, who has recorded 19 hits in his last 10 games, erupted for eight singles and three runs as Miami improved to 4-2 in its last six after taking two of three from Sunshine State-rival Tampa Bay. The 28-year-old Dominican hasn't fared as well in his career versus Thursday starter Jeremy Hellickson, however, going 0-for-6.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Miami), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Pablo Lopez (1-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Jeremy Hellickson (2-1, 2.63)

Lopez fought off his nerves to win his major-league debut after allowing two solo homers in six innings of a 5-2 triumph over the New York Mets on Saturday. "As soon as I stepped out of the dugout, I just kept looking up in the stands, and they were so big, all the way up to the sky. This is where I wanted to be," the 22-year-old Venezuelan told reporters. Lopez has been on the fast track this season, posting a combined 1.44 ERA in stints with Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A New Orleans.

Hellickson tasted defeat for the first time this season on Saturday after allowing three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 3-2 setback at Philadelphia. The 31-year-old was making his first start since returning from a lengthy stint on the disabled list due to a right hamstring strain. Hellickson owns a 4-3 record and 2.88 ERA in 12 career starts versus Miami, highlighted by a pair of shutouts against the club in 2016 while pitching for the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami SS J.T. Riddle went 13-for-37 with four multi-hit performances during the team's 10-game homestand.

2. Washington begins a stretch of playing 21 of 27 contests against sub-.500 teams on Thursday.

3. Marlins LF Derek Dietrich has struck out eight times during a 3-for-25 slump over his last eight games.

PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Marlins 2

Texas Rangers vs. Detroit Tigers Preview and Predictions 07-05-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 4th July 2018 by Gracenote
Rangers vs. Tigers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/04/2018

After ending their 4-4 homestand with three consecutive losses, the Texas Rangers hope to right the ship on the road as they begin a 10-game trek that leads into the All-Star break on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series against the reeling Detroit Tigers. Texas squandered an early four-run lead Wednesday and dropped its eighth straight meeting with Houston, a 5-4 setback in 10 innings.

Shin-Soo Choo belted a solo homer for the Rangers in the third inning on Wednesday to extend his on-base streak to a major league-high 44 games. The 35-year-old South Korean is two contests shy of matching the franchise single-season record set in 1993 by Julio Franco. Detroit is in the midst of a funk that has seen it suffer 13 defeats over its last 15 contests, including a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday that concluded a 2-4 road trip. Jose Iglesias collected three of the nine hits recorded by the Tigers, who have dropped four in a row at home and go back on the road after this series for a six-game trek before the break.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Texas), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Yovani Gallardo (2-0, 9.00 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (4-6, 4.18)

Gallardo has gradually gotten better since joining the Rangers' rotation, reducing his runs allowed and walks by one in each of his last two starts after yielding five and three, respectively, in a no-decision in his team debut against Colorado on June 17. The 32-year-old native of Mexico, who parted ways with Cincinnati after making three relief appearances in early April, gave up three runs and four hits over 7 1/3 innings in a victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday. Gallardo, who recorded 13 wins for Texas in 2015, is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in three career starts versus Detroit.

Boyd's winless streak reached four starts on Saturday, when he allowed three runs and four hits over six innings in a no-decision at Toronto. It was the third consecutive road outing for the 27-year-old native of Washington, who was tagged for 11 runs on 14 hits and five walks over seven frames in his previous two. Boyd, who owns a 2.61 ERA at home as opposed to a 5.55 mark on the road, is 1-4 with a 5.53 ERA in five career starts against Texas.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre was scratched from Wednesday's starting lineup due to an infected tooth.

2. Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire is expected to be in the dugout for the series opener after leaving Wednesday's contest due to overheating and dehydration.

3. Texas placed Tony Barnette (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled fellow RHP Chris Martin from Triple-A Round Rock.

PREDICTION: Tigers 9, Rangers 4

Atlanta Braves vs. Milwaukee Brewers Preview and Predictions 07-05-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 4th July 2018 by Gracenote
Braves vs. Brewers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/04/2018

Two of the best teams in the National League square off Thursday when the Milwaukee Brewers - the first team in the league to reach 50 wins - open a four-game home series against the Atlanta Braves, who are one victory away from 50 on the season. The Brewers finished a three-game sweep of Minnesota on Wednesday and have won five of their past seven, while the Braves dropped two in a row to the Yankees after winning the first four games of a 10-game road trip.

A reason behind Milwaukee's surge in the standings is the strong season of first baseman Jesus Aguilar, who is hitting .356 with eight homers and 18 RBIs in his past 17 games. The Brewers slugged three homers in Wednesday's 3-2 victory, the 10th consecutive game a Milwaukee hitter has hit a homer and gives the Brewers 111 longballs on the season - second in the NL to Los Angeles. One concern for the Braves entering the series is the health of first baseman Freddie Freeman, a potential NL MVP candidate who left Wednesday's game with a right triceps contusion after being hit with a pitch and is considered day-to-day. Second baseman Ozzie Albies finished with three hits in Wednesday's 6-2 loss at New York, his eighth multi-hit performance in his last 11 games giving him 102 hits on the season.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Southeast (Atlanta), FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Max Fried (1-2, 2.55 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-3, 3.71)

Fried made the most of a spot start Saturday in St. Louis, holding the Cardinals to four hits across 6 2/3 scoreless innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts. The 24-year-old is 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA in two starts for the Braves in 2018 and in six career starts in the majors has posted a 2.40 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 30 innings. Fried made four relief appearances earlier this season, giving up four runs on five hits in six innings.

Chacin has followed up his 13-win season with San Diego in 2017 with a strong first half in his first season with the Brewers. The 30-year old has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 13 of his 18 starts, including three of his last four outings - surrendering one run on four hits in five innings Saturday against Cincinnati. Chacin, who went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in five starts with the Braves in 2016, is holding right-handed batters to a .211 average and has allowed only seven homers overall in 97 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta 3B Johan Camargo has a 10-game hitting and is hitting .357 in that stretch with a pair of homers.

2. The Brewers are 44-14 when hitting at least one homer this season and are 7-21 when going homerless.

3. Milwaukee's bullpen has been outstanding in posting a 3.03 ERA, while Atlanta relievers have a 4.21 ERA.

PREDICTION: Brewers 3, Braves 2

Baltimore Orioles vs. Minnesota Twins Preview and Predictions 07-05-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 4th July 2018 by Gracenote
Orioles vs. Twins Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/04/2018

The Minnesota Twins returned to Target Field with their tails between their legs after concluding a disastrous 1-8 road trip with six straight losses. The Twins look to get back on track Thursday, when they begin an 11-game homestand heading into the All-Star break with the opener of a four-game series against the beleaguered Baltimore Orioles, who have dropped nine of 10.

Eduardo Escobar belted a solo homer in Wednesday's 3-2 setback against Milwaukee as he bids to work his way out of a slump that has seen him go 4-for-29 with seven strikeouts over his last eight games. The 29-year-old Venezuelan also went deep among his two extra-base hits in the season-opening series against Baltimore. Tim Beckham continued his torrid stretch with two hits while scoring his team's lone run on Adam Jones' double in the third inning of Wednesday's 4-1 defeat at Philadelphia. Beckham is riding a seven-game hitting streak during which he is 10-for-27 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FS North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Andrew Cashner (2-8, 4.48 ERA) vs. Twins RH Aaron Slegers (0-0, 3.38)

Cashner saw his winless stretch extend to six starts after settling for his third straight no-decision on Saturday despite allowing one run and four hits in six innings against the Los Angeles Angels. A bullpen implosion was to blame as the 31-year-old was in line for the win after delivering his fourth quality start in his last five outings. Cashner owns an 0-2 record, 6.00 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in two career starts versus Minnesota.

Slegers is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to remain on normal rest for his fifth career appearance in the major leagues. The 25-year-old came on in long relief for the Twins on May 30 at Kansas City, against which he surrendered two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Slegers, who has posted a 5-6 record with a 3.55 ERA with the Red Wings, owns an 0-1 record and 5.66 ERA over 20 2/3 frames in three starts and two relief appearances in the majors.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore SS Manny Machado has reached base in each of his last seven games.

2. Minnesota RHP Ervin Santana (finger) is scheduled to make his next rehab start on Thursday for Single-A Fort Myers.

3. The Twins are just 5-11 against American League East representatives, while the Orioles' 12-32 road mark is easily the worst in the league.

PREDICTION: Twins 4, Orioles 2

White Sox vs. Astros Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/04/2018

Justin Verlander looks to break out of a mini-funk when the Houston Astros host the Chicago White Sox on Thursday for the opener of their four-game series. Houston's ace has dropped back-to-back starts, surrendering nine runs and 16 hits over 11 2/3 innings during the stretch.

Verlander posted a 1.60 ERA over his first 16 starts and allowed fewer than two runs on 11 occasions before the sudden rough patch. The Astros will be looking for their third consecutive victory after Josh Reddick and Yuli Gurriel homered in Wednesday's 5-4, 10-inning win at Texas. The White Sox have lost 14 of their last 20 games after falling 7-4 to Cincinnati on Wednesday. Jose Abreu (ankle) was back in the starting lineup and went 0-for-3 in the setback while being thrown out at the plate in the eighth inning.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCS Chicago, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (1-3, 4.55 ERA) vs. Astros RH Justin Verlander (9-4, 2.12)

Rodon lost to Texas in his last outing as he was tagged for five runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old was solid in his previous turn, when he allowed two runs and seven hits over eight frames en route to a victory against Oakland. Rodon is 1-0 with a 1.71 ERA in four career starts versus the Astros.

Verlander has served up two homers in two of his last four turns but hopes to settle back into his groove against the White Sox. The 35-year-old gave up two hits in six scoreless innings of a triumph over Chicago on April 20 to improve to 21-13 with a 3.74 ERA in 43 career starts versus the club. Verlander regularly has problems with Abreu (15-for-38, five homers) but has shut down Yolmer Sanchez (1-for-13).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros outscored the White Sox 27-2 while sweeping a three-game series in Chicago from April 20-22.

2. Chicago 2B Yoan Moncada went deep on Wednesday and is 6-for-15 with a homer, triple, two doubles and six RBIs over his last three games.

3. Houston C Max Stassi (wrist) could return for the series opener after sitting out Wednesday's contest.

PREDICTION: Astros 5, White Sox 1

by Gracenote on 07/05/2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks are suffering through an unsuccessful homestand and hope to change their fortunes when they open a four-game series against the San Diego Padres on Thursday. The Diamondbacks are just 1-5 on the 10-game stretch after losing 8-4 to St. Louis on Wednesday.

Diamondbacks star Paul Goldschmidt went 0-for-3 with two walks on Wednesday after being a scorching 7-for-11 with two homers and six RBIs over his previous three games. The Padres have lost three consecutive contests and 13 of their last 16 to fall 14 games below .500. Christian Villanueva has belted a team-best 17 homers after going deep to account for both runs during Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Oakland.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Eric Lauer (3-5, 5.08 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Shelby Miller (0-2, 11.42)

Lauer lost to Pittsburgh in his last turn as he was battered for six runs - three earned - and nine hits over five innings. The 25-year-old rookie was solid in June, going 2-2 with a 2.76 ERA over six starts after entering the month with a 7.67 ERA. Lauer is 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA in seven turns on the road.

Angels vs. Mariners Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/04/2018

The Los Angeles Angels halted Seattle's eight-game winning streak and aim to hand the host Mariners another setback on Thursday in the finale of their three-game series. Kole Calhoun went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs in Wednesday's 7-4 triumph as the Angels won for only the third time in their last 11 contests.

Los Angeles star Mike Trout is 1-for-6 with three walks in the series after terrorizing Seattle pitching by going 16-for-25 with five homers in the first six matchups of the campaign. Trout is tied for second in the majors with 24 blasts but has fallen into a power drought, going deep just once in his last 19 games. The Mariners received back-to-back homers from Kyle Seager and Ryon Healy on Wednesday but were just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Seager has recorded five multi-hit performances over his last eight contests and is 12-for-28 with three homers and nine RBIs during the stretch.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Jaime Barria (5-4, 3.40 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Marco Gonzales (8-5, 3.77)

Barria was selected to start the series finale after Tyler Skaggs (adductor strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Panamanian has gone 0-3 over his last four starts after winning five of his first six decisions. Barria lost to Seattle on June 12, when he served up two homers to Mitch Haniger while giving up three runs - two earned - and eight hits over five innings.

Gonzales tossed his first career complete game in his last turn as he allowed just one run and six hits during a 4-1 win over Kansas City. The 26-year-old served up four homers over his previous two outings - both losses - while surrendering 11 runs and 15 hits over 12 1/3 innings. Gonzales has posted a 5.73 ERA in two no-decisions against the Angels this season and owns a 4.66 mark in four career starts versus the club.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels DH Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-4 and scored twice on Wednesday in his second game back from an elbow injury that has curtailed him from pitching.

2. Haniger has gone 1-for-11 with five strikeouts over his last three games.

3. Los Angeles also placed OF Chris Young (hamstring) on the disabled list, activated RHP Garrett Richards (hamstring) from the DL, recalled OF Jabari Blash and RHP Deck McGuire from Triple-A Salt Lake and optioned INF Kaleb Cowart to the same affiliate.

PREDICTION: Mariners 5, Angels 4

Cardinals vs. Giants Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 07/05/2018

The San Francisco Giants hope to duplicate the success they enjoyed during their last homestand when they begin another 10-game stretch at AT&T Park with the opener of a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. The Giants went 7-3 on their last string of home contests but followed with a 3-3 road trip that concluded with three straight losses in Colorado, including a 1-0 setback on Wednesday.

San Francisco registered three runs and 14 hits during the series at Coors Field, managing only three singles in Wednesday's setback. Brandon Belt recorded one of the base hits and enters Thursday with a five-game streak during which he has gone 7-for-19. The Cardinals continue a nine-game road trip they began by winning two of three in Arizona, including an 8-4 triumph in Wednesday's rubber match. Yadier Molina belted a three-run homer during a five-run seventh inning and Tommy Pham also drove in three runs while joining Matt Carpenter with three hits, making him 9-for-16 with six RBIs over his last four games.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Luke Weaver (4-7, 5.16 ERA) vs. Giants RH Johnny Cueto (3-0, 0.84)

Weaver is coming off a rough showing against Atlanta on Saturday in which he was battered for eight runs and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings en route to his fifth loss in six decisions. The 24-year-old Floridian has failed to last six frames in each of his last seven turns, yielding at least four runs in five of those outings.
