Gracenote
Apr 4, 2018

The New York Mets are dominating on the mound early on and will try to spoil the Washington Nationals' home opener when the teams begin a three-game series in the nation's capital on Thursday. The Mets have allowed a total of 13 runs in their 4-1 start after Noah Syndergaard and four relievers combined to allow five hits in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at home.

The bullpen has given up three runs in 20 1/3 frames as New York has raced to its best five-game start since 2012. "Our bullpen has done a fantastic job so far this season and we have faith in them," Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters. "Everybody's doing the right things." The home opener features a fabulous pitching matchup between New York's Jacob deGrom and Washington's Stephen Strasburg, both of whom won their season debuts with solid outings. The Mets' lineup could be bolstered by the return of outfielder Michael Conforto (shoulder), who is expected to be activated from the disabled list.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SNY (New York), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (1-0, 1.59 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (1-0, 1.42)

DeGrom allowed a run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings to lead the Mets to a 6-2 win over St. Louis on Saturday, striking out seven against one walk. The 29-year-old boasts a 2.77 ERA in 12 career starts against the Nationals and is 4-1 in six starts at Washington. Bryce Harper is 9-for-24 with a homer against deGrom but Anthony Rendon and Michael Taylor are a combined 1-for-38 with 17 strikeouts.

Strasburg also recorded seven strikeouts and allowed three runs (one earned) while lasting into the seventh inning in his win over Cincinnati on Saturday, improving to 31-8 over his last three seasons. His personal winning streak is up to six dating to last season and he won each of his last four outings at home in 2017. The former No. 1 pick is 8-4 with a 2.64 ERA lifetime versus New York.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets LF Yoenis Cespedes homered Wednesday and has six RBIs through his first five games.

2. Harper has drawn eight walks over his past four games.

3. Washington took 13 of 19 meetings last season.

PREDICTION: Nationals 3, Mets 2

Preview: Rays at Red Sox
Gracenote
Apr 4, 2018

The Boston Red Sox are off to a 5-1 start as they play their home opener versus the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday with their pitching staff - especially the starters - mostly responsible. Boston lost its season opener 6-4 on March 29 when Tampa Bay stunningly scored six runs in the eighth inning but won its next three against the Rays before sweeping a pair of games at Miami, including a 4-2 victory in 13 innings Tuesday.

The Red Sox boast a 2.21 ERA - 1.03 from its starters to include Chris Sale, who hasn't earned a decision in two turns while allowing one run in 11 innings. “If all five of our starters can have, not even great years, just have good years, I think we can do something really special,” Boston's David Price, who will make his second start of the season Thursday, told reporters. The Red Sox hope to continue taking advantage of a soft early season schedule with its first nine games against teams who are in heavy rebuild mode before hosting the New York Yankees for three games beginning Tuesday. Tampa Bay, which is 1-5 after a 7-2 loss at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, gives the ball to reliever Yonny Chirinos on Thursday because of its apparent shortage of starters.

TV: 2:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network; FS Sun (Tampa Bay), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Yonny Chirinos (0-0, 0.00) vs. Red Sox LH David Price (1-0, 0.00)

Chris Archer started Tampa Bay's 11-4 loss at New York on Tuesday before Blake Snell took the mound Wednesday. With Jacob Faria scheduled to pitch Saturday, manager Kevin Cash will use his bullpen exclusively Thursday and Sunday since Nathan Eovaldi - his only other designated starter - is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his pitching elbow. Cash has Matt Andriese, who has made 44 starts in his 74 major-league appearances - 17 in 18 last season, in the bullpen and he yielded a two-run homer to Aaron Judge his 50 pitches over 2 2/3 innings Wednesday.

Price allowed four hits and struck out five while throwing 76 pitches in seven shutout innings of Friday's 1-0 victory in improving to 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) against his former team. "It felt good. That's what I know best," the 32-year-old Tennessee native told reporters after Friday's start. "I had success coming out of the pen, but this is what I want to do." Price, who is 17-5 with a 3.12 ERA in 35 games (32 starts) at Fenway Park, has fared well against Carlos Gomez (0-for-17) and Brad Miller (4-for-27).

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston DH-LF J.D. Martinez, who signed a five-year, $110 million contract during the offseason, makes his home debut after starting the season 4-for-20 with seven strikeouts and two RBIs.

2. The Rays are hitting .196 this season and scored nine runs in its last five games.

3. The Red Sox have split their last four home openers after winning nine straight, and are 2-0 against Tampa Bay in such games.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 3, Rays 2

Preview: Marlins at Phillies
Gracenote
Apr 4, 2018

It could have turned out worse for the Miami Marlins, facing two of baseball’s better teams in the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox to open the season. The Marlins begin their first road trip of the season Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies after winning twice in a six-game homestand that featured three extra-inning contests, a six-game hitting streak for new second baseman Starlin Castro and a bit of confidence from a Miami team picked to finish last in the National League East.

“We know we can stick with any team out there,” Miami outfielder Lewis Brinson told the media after Tuesday’s 4-2, 13-inning loss to the Red Sox - a game in which the Marlins had the winning run thrown out at the plate in the 11th. “Two of the best teams in the league, not just the American and National League, in all of baseball. We stuck right with them.” Philadelphia comes home having dropped four of its first five games and three in a row, losing 4-2 Wednesday to the New York Mets. The Phillies offense has struggled mightily during the losing streak, scoring just four runs on 14 hits in a loss to Atlanta and two against the Mets. One Philadelphia player off to a good start is left fielder Rhys Hoskins, who went 2-for-3 Wednesday to raise his average to .471 and his OPS to 1.374.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Miami), NBC 10 (Philadelphia)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Caleb Smith (0-0, 1.69 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (0-0, 6.75)

Acquired from the Yankees in the offseason, the 26-year-old Smith held the Cubs to one run on four hits with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings Friday. He made his major-league debut with New York last season, posting a 7.71 ERA in nine appearances (two starts). Smith allowed 11 earned runs in 19 innings this spring and will face the Phillies for the first time.

Pivetta lasted four innings in his season debut Friday at Atlanta, giving up three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The 25-year-old went 8-10 with a 6.02 ERA in 26 starts last season with Philadelphia, starting the year with a 4.73 ERA in the first half before that number ballooned to 7.05 across his final 15 starts. Pivetta made four starts against the Marlins last season, going 1-1 with an 8.66 ERA and 24 hits allowed in 17 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Phillies RHP Pat Neshek will miss at least the next two weeks with a right shoulder strain, but a MRI showed no significant damage.

2. Miami RF-1B Garrett Cooper missed both games against Boston after being hit in the right wrist with a pitch in the second game of the Cubs series.

3. Philadelphia won the season series 11-8 in 2017, averaging 5.6 runs per game.

PREDICTION: Phillies 5, Marlins 4

Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The Oakland Athletics look to post consecutive victories for the first time this season when they host the American League West-rival Texas Rangers on Thursday afternoon for the finale of their four-game set. Oakland hopes to win the series as it cruised to a 6-2 win on Wednesday after splitting the first two contests.

Jed Lowrie recorded two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Athletics, who embark on an eight-game road trip following Thursday's contest. Matt Chapman has gotten off to a fine start at the plate for Oakland as he brings a six-game hitting streak into Thursday's meeting and has posted three straight multi-hit performances. Texas managed only four hits on Wednesday - including two by Nomar Mazara, who has gone 5-for-10 over the first three games of the series. Elvis Andrus recorded a single in the setback after having his season-opening five-game hitting streak halted on Tuesday but has registered only two RBIs thus far.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Texas), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Martin Perez (2017: 13-12, 4.82 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (0-1, 7.94)

Two days after celebrating his 27th birthday, Perez will be activated from the disabled list to make his season debut. The Venezuelan left-hander, who went 8-2 with a 3.71 ERA over his final 11 turns of 2017, has been recovering from a broken radial bone in his right elbow. Perez has made 16 career starts against Oakland, going 7-7 with one shutout and a 5.24 ERA.

Mengden did not fare well in his season debut on Sunday as he was tagged for six runs - five earned - and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of a loss to the Los Angeles Angels. On the positive side, the 25-year-old Texan issued just one walk and registered five strikeouts without serving up a home run. Mengden, who is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in three career starts against Texas, has yet to win at home as he is 0-9 with a 6.57 ERA in 12 turns at Oakland Coliseum.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre played in his 2,821st career game on Wednesday, passing Reggie Jackson for 21st place on the all-time list.

2. Oakland OF Matt Joyce returned to the lineup Wednesday after receiving a day off to rest his sore left ankle and went 1-for-4 while scoring a run.

3. Texas RHP Tim Lincecum (finger) threw his third bullpen session in five days on Wednesday without any issues.

PREDICTION: Rangers 5, Athletics 2

Preview: Rockies at Padres
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The San Diego Padres are off to a 1-5 start and will be without their top outfielder for at least the next week as Wil Myers landed on the 10-day disabled list with right arm nerve irritation. Myers hopes to return when eligible but definitely will be missed by the struggling Padres, who host the Colorado Rockies on Thursday afternoon for the finale of their four-game series.

Colorado's Charlie Blackmon signed a six-year, $108 million contract on Wednesday and celebrated by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored in a 5-2 victory over the Padres, who trailed 5-0 after two innings. Ian Desmond continued his hot start for the Rockies by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jon Gray recorded seven strikeouts while tossing seven scoreless innings. The Padres were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position but received another strong performance from Cory Spangenberg, who started in left field and is batting .333 with two home runs. Spangenberg can play multiple positions - including third base, where the Padres are using him along with Chase Headley and Christian Villanueva, who homered three times in Tuesday’s 8-4 victory but went 0-for-3 the following night.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (0-0, 27.00 ERA) vs. Padres LH Joey Lucchesi (0-0, 5.79)

Anderson is looking to bounce back after giving up seven runs on five hits and four walks in 2 1/3 innings against Arizona on Friday. “That was uncharacteristic,” manager Bud Black told reporters. “I can't explain it. He might be able to explain it better than I can, but I saw a pitcher that couldn’t locate the fastball.” The 28-year-old native of Las Vegas has gone 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA in three career starts against San Diego.

Lucchesi had mixed results in his major-league debut on Friday against Milwaukee, allowing three runs over 4 2/3 innings while throwing 55 of his 75 pitches for strikes. “It was kind of surreal,” Lucchesi told reporters. “It was pretty cool to be out there, living my dream I've had since I was a boy.” A fourth-round draft pick out of Southeast Missouri State in 2016, the 24-year-old Lucchesi is filling in for Dinelson Lamet (elbow) but could stick in the rotation if he pitches well over the next month.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Diego C Austin Hedges returned Wednesday after missing two games due to back pain and went 0-for-3 while batting eighth.

2. Desmond has hit .363 with seven home runs in his last 19 games at Petco Park.

3. The Padres recalled RHP Phil Maton from Triple-A El Paso to take Myers’ spot on the roster.

PREDICTION: Rockies 7, Padres 4

Preview: Mariners at Twins
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The temperatures are expected to be in the low-to-mid 30s when the Minnesota Twins hold their home opener on Thursday against the Seattle Mariners. But that is just fine with the two starting pitchers - Seattle's James Paxton and Minnesota's Kyle Gibson - both of whom grew up dealing with cold.

Paxton is looking to bounce back from a tough opening start and the British Columbia native feels he will have an advantage over the hitters. "Everyone is playing in the same conditions," Paxton told reporters. "Don't go out there and make excuses. It is what it is and just go get 'em. I'll just try to stay warm between innings." Gibson, who grew up in Indiana, is excited about the occasion and wouldn't care if the temperature was minus-32. "Any chance you get to start a home opener, Minnesota fans won't care if it's 32 degrees or 22 degrees, they want to see a baseball game," Gibson told reporters prior to Wednesday's loss at Pittsburgh. "I'm excited to be headed home and start a good homestand."

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Sports Northwest (Seattle), FS North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (0-1, 11.57 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (1-0, 0.00)

Paxton served up two homers and gave up six runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings while losing to the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. The 29-year-old is looking to build on last season's breakthrough campaign when he went 12-5 with a 2.98 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 24 starts. Paxton is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in three career starts against the Twins and has struggled against Miguel Sano (3-for-6 with a triple and double).

Gibson tossed six hitless innings in his opening start against the Baltimore Orioles but walked five batters and struck out six and repeatedly worked out of trouble before being removed. "Even when it was 2-0, or 2-1, I had confidence with my fastball in the strike zone instead of getting them to chase it," said Gibson, who was 12-10 with a 5.07 ERA last season. "Hopefully, that's going to be the thing this year, that I can look back on it and say through all the struggles of 2017 that's what I learned and that's when I turned it around." Gibson is 4-2 with a 3.49 ERA in eight career starts against the Mariners and has experienced issues with Robinson Cano (8-for-27, five RBIs).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Mariners went 4-3 against Minnesota last season.

2. Twins 2B Brian Dozier has smacked four solo homers over the past three contests and scored eight runs in five games overall.

3. Seattle C Mike Zunino (oblique) could be activated from the disabled list on Saturday for the second of the three-game series.

PREDICTION: Mariners 5, Twins 3

Preview: Tigers at White Sox
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The Chicago White Sox hope to continue an early-season power surge when they open their home schedule with the first of three games against the Central Division-rival Detroit Tigers on Thursday afternoon. Chicago leads the major leagues with 14 home runs in five contests after belting two more and holding on for a 4-3 victory Wednesday at Toronto to salvage the finale of a three-game set.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria hopes his 3-2 team will find more ways to score, telling the Chicago Tribune: “Everybody knows you ultimately can’t just win on the long ball. That’s the big thing in the game today is long ball. But when you start to face good pitching, you have to be prepared to do all facets of the game.” Jose Abreu, along with Matt Davidson, went deep Wednesday for the White Sox and Jordan Zimmermann will try to keep the ball in the park when he takes the mound for the Tigers against Chicago’s veteran James Shields with cold conditions expected Thursday. Detroit started the season 1-4 at home before Wednesday’s game against Kansas City was postponed due to poor weather, and has managed just one home run in the early going - a solo blast by Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers have already been shut out twice, but Cabrera (team-high five RBIs) and Nicholas Castellanos (7-for-21, three RBIs) need to be contained.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, NBCS Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 6.00 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (1-0, 6.00)

Zimmermann kept his team in the game on Opening Day, allowing four runs on six hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking just one while throwing 81 pitches in a no-decision. It was a reasonably solid start for the 31-year-old Wisconsin native after a rough 2017 season when he went 8-13 with a career-worst 6.08 ERA. Abreu is 8-for-15 with a homer and five RBIs versus Zimmermann, who was 2-1 with a 6.19 ERA in three games against the White Sox last year.

Shields gave up four runs in the first inning last Thursday, but settled down to shut down Kansas City in the next five innings to earn the victory, yielding five hits and one walk overall. The 36-year-old California native recorded four of his five wins at home last season and went 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA versus the Tigers in 2017 to improve to 9-8 in his career with a 4.43 mark against them. Cabrera has owned Shields over the years, going 26-for-70 with 10 doubles, four homers and 12 RBIs.

WALK-OFFS

1. The White Sox won 10 of 19 games against the Tigers last year to win the season series for the first time since 2008.

2. Davidson, who belted three homers on Opening Day, has four blasts overall and a team-leading seven RBIs.

3. Detroit SS Jose Iglesias is off to a slow start with one hit in 16 at-bats and batted just .190 against Chicago in 2017.

PREDICTION: Tigers 6, White Sox 5

Preview: Orioles at Yankees
Gracenote
Apr 4, 2018

As anticipated, the New York Yankees' big bats are hammering the ball all over Yankee Stadium. The slugging Yankees will try to make it three wins in a row to begin their home schedule when they begin a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.

After Didi Gregorius smacked a pair of homers and drove in eight runs to lead New York to an 11-4 victory in its home opener against Tampa Bay on Tuesday, the formidable trio of Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez each went deep in Wednesday's 7-2 triumph. "Hopefully we'll put some back-to-back-to-backs in there," Stanton told reporters, "but it's good that we all got one today." The Orioles have lost five in a row since a season-opening victory and they've been outscored 32-11 in that span. "It's really tough, this schedule," second baseman Jonathan Schoop told reporters after his team was swept in Houston. "But it's tough for them, too, because they have to face us. We're good too. We've just got to go out there and grind and play hard and try to win."

TV: 6:35 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Andrew Cashner (0-1, 7.20 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 1.50)

Cashner took the loss in his debut with Baltimore after giving up five runs (four earned) over five innings against Minnesota on Saturday. He served up three home runs in the outing, the most the 31-year-old has allowed since July 8, 2016. Cashner has a 1.80 ERA in three career starts against New York but has never pitched in Yankee Stadium.

Tanaka was dominant in a victory at Toronto to begin his campaign, fanning eight Blue Jays and allowing one run in six innings. He was 9-5 with a 3.22 ERA in 15 starts at home in 2017, including seven innings of two-run ball in a win over Baltimore on Sept. 14. Schoop has just five hits in 23 at-bats in his career against the 29-year-old Tanaka, but three of them are home runs and one is a double.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles 1B Chris Davis is 1-for-21 with six strikeouts on the season.

2. Judge has four hits and five walks over the last three games.

3. New York won 12 of 19 meetings last season, including eight of 10 at Yankee Stadium.

PREDICTION: Yankees 7, Orioles 3

Apr 5, 2018

The Pittsburgh Pirates were the last team to suffer their first loss of the season, and they’ll try to resume their hot start when they host the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday for the opener of a four-game series. The Reds are starting a seven-game road trip following two consecutive days off.

The Pirates have seen their share of dramatic games in the first week of the season, following up a 13-inning victory on Opening Day with two one-run games. Their 7-3 loss on Wednesday was their most lopsided contest thus far. The Reds also have played a pair of one-run games along with a 2-0 loss on Opening Day. After a 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday, they were rained out in the finale of the two-game series and had a scheduled day off Wednesday.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Homer Bailey (0-1, 1.50 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Steven Brault (1-0, 0.00)

Opening Day went as well as could be expected for Bailey, who allowed one run and four hits over six innings but took the tough-luck loss against Washington. The 31-year-old typically doesn’t start the season on a good note – he’s 3-9 with a 4.63 ERA in March and April during his career. Bailey won both of his starts against the Pirates last year and is 10-6 with a 3.39 ERA in 21 career meetings.

Brault figures to be a valuable swingman for the Pirates, and he’s already being called upon to make a spot start. The 25-year-old threw three scoreless innings in relief on Opening Day, allowing two hits and one walk while notching the win. Primarily a starter in the minors, Brault is 1-3 with a 4.35 ERA in 11 big-league starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates 3B David Freese is 8-for-26 with two doubles and two homers against Bailey.

2. Reds speedsters Billy Hamilton and Jose Peraza have not yet attempted to steal a base after combining for 82 steals in 103 tries a year ago.

3. Pittsburgh SS Jordy Mercer sat out Wednesday with a jammed right pinky finger suffered diving back into first base Monday, but he expects to be back in the lineup Thursday.

Apr 5, 2018

After winning three of the final four contests of their season-opening six-game road trip, the St. Louis Cardinals will turn to a reliable arm when they play their home opener Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Adam Wainwright, who is beginning his 13th season with St. Louis, will be activated from the disabled list to make the start after the team concluded its trek with a 6-0 triumph in Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Yadier Molina belted his third homer of the young season and Carlos Martinez struck out 10 while coming within two outs of a complete-game shutout for the Cardinals, who have outscored their opponents 23-10 over their last four games. Arizona also is coming off a shutout victory as it completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday with a 3-0 triumph. Patrick Corbin, who retired the first 14 batters he faced, recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings and recorded two hits - one more than Los Angeles. Paul Goldschmidt drove in a run but was hitless in three at-bats and is just 1-for-17 on the season.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Arizona, FS Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (1-0, 10.80 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (2017: 12-5, 5.11)

Ray was aided by his offense in his season debut on Friday as he picked up the win despite surrendering seven runs - six earned - and seven hits over five innings. The 26-year-old Tennessean recorded eight strikeouts but issued three walks and served up three home runs. Ray has yet to defeat St. Louis in his career, going 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA in three starts.

Wainwright will be making his first appearance of the year after being sidelined with a strained left hamstring. The 36-year-old Georgian finished last season strong, going 5-0 with a 4.21 ERA over his final 10 games - nine starts and a two-inning relief stint at Pittsburgh on Sept. 23 in his final appearance of 2017. Wainwright has pitched well against Arizona during his career as he is 8-4 with one shutout and a 2.72 ERA in 14 games (11 starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals SS Paul DeJong has hit safely in all six games this season, going 10-for-22 with three homers and five RBIs after a two-hit performance on Wednesday.

2. Arizona OF Chris Owings is riding a five-game hitting streak during which he has gone 6-for-17 with a blast and four RBIs.

3. St. Louis optioned rookie RHP Jack Flaherty to Triple-A Memphis to make room on the roster for Wainwright.

Preview: Cubs at Brewers
Gracenote
Apr 5, 2018

The first team to score Thursday will breathe a sigh of relief when the Milwaukee Brewers host the Chicago Cubs. The National League Central rivals both are coming off shutout losses – two straight for the Cubs – heading into the four-game series.

The Brewers won four of their first five behind a strong offense, but they were blanked 6-0 on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game set against St. Louis. Milwaukee collected 19 extra-base hits in its first five games before managing just five singles in the shutout loss. The Cubs haven’t scored since Saturday, as they were blanked 6-0 at Miami on Sunday and 1-0 at Cincinnati the following day before being rained out on Tuesday. Chicago has scored 18 runs in its two wins and one in its three losses, including a 17-inning game.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (0-0, 8.10 ERA) vs. Brewers LH Brent Suter (1-0, 5.40)

Lester struggled on Opening Day against the Marlins, lasting only 3 1/3 innings after allowing four runs - three earned - and seven hits. The 34-year-old is a notoriously slow starter, as he’s 15-17 in March and April and has a winning record in every other month. Lester is 3-2 with a 2.77 ERA in six career starts against the Brewers.
