Friday's Tip Sheet
By Brad Young

Friday games are usually the beginning of a three-game weekend series. There are two great rivalry games on the schedule, with the National League Central matchup between Chicago and St. Louis. Also on the bill is the first game of the season between bitter American League East rivals Boston and New York.

We will also take a closer look at the Los Angeles-Colorado contest and Seattle-Los Angeles game with today’s Tip Sheet.

**Cubs (Dempster) at Cardinals (Wainwright)**

-Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed St. Louis as a $1.25 home ‘chalk’ over Chicago, with the total listed at 8 ½ ‘over’ (minus $1.25). This National League Central contest is slated to start at 8:15 p.m. ET.

-Chicago hurler Ryan Dempster (1-0, 5.00 ERA) is coming off of Saturday’s no-decision against St. Louis. The veteran right-hander went six innings while yielding four runs on four hits (one home run) with four walks and four strikeouts.

-The Cubs eventually won that affair as a $1.30 home favorite, 7-5, while the combined 12 runs eclipsed the 10-run closing total. The ‘over’ has cashed his previous two outings.

-Dempster went 2-0 against the Cardinals last season in three starts, going a combined 18 innings while being reached for six runs on 19 hits (one home run) with five walks and 13 strikeouts. The Cubs prevailed as a $1.42 home ‘chalk,’ 6-2, and as a $1.00 home underdog, 5-1, while losing as a $1.08 road ‘dog, 4-3. The ‘under’ went 2-1 during those three outings.

-St. Louis right-hander Adam Wainwright (2-0, 3.31 ERA) has won his last two games after upending the Cubs April 16 as a $1.06 road underdog, 7-4. The 6-foot-7 hurler lasted six innings, allowing four runs on six hits (one home run) with four walks and six strikeouts.

-The combined 11 runs toppled the eight-run closing total, helping the ‘over’ improve to 3-0 when he’s on the mound.

-Wainwright went 1-0 against the Cubs last year in two starts, pitching a combined 11 1/3 innings while surrendering three runs on eight hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts. The Cardinals triumphed as a $1.12 home favorite, 5-3, and as a $1.60 road ‘dog, 12-6.

**Dodgers (Stults) at Rockies (Cook)**

-LVSC opened Colorado as a slight $1.10 home favorite over Los Angeles, with the total set at 10 ½. This NL West contest is scheduled to begin at 9:10 p.m. ET.

-Los Angeles southpaw Eric Stults (2-0, 2.61 ERA) upended San Francisco April 16 as a $1.70 home ‘chalk,’ 7-2. The Indiana native was reached for two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts over five innings.

-The combined nine runs landed directly on the closing total.

-The 29-year-old received a no-decision in his lone start against the Rockies last season, tossing 3 2/3 innings while allowing three runs on six hits (one home run) with three walks and four strikeouts. The Dodgers eventually prevailed as a $1.13 road underdog, 16-10, while the combined 26 runs soared ‘over’ the 10-run closing total.

-Colorado counters with Aaron Cook, hoping the right-hander can improve on his 0-1 record and 10.22 ERA. The eight-year veteran picked up no decisions his first two starts before Saturday’s setback to the Dodgers as a $1.55 road underdog, 9-5.

-The 6-foot-3 hurler lasted just four innings, yielding five runs on eight hits (three home runs) with two walks and two strikeouts. The combined 14 runs toppled the eight-run closing total, helping the ‘over’ improve to 3-0 when he’s pitching.

-Cook went 2-0 versus the Dodgers last season in three starts, going a combined 23 2/3 innings while allowing three runs on 23 hits (one home run) with one walk and 10 strikeouts. The Rockies won as a $1.25 home ‘chalk,’ 7-2, as a $1.25 road underdog, 2-1, and as a $1.17 home favorite, 1-0. The ‘under’ prevailed in all three matchups.

**Yankees (Chamberlain) at Red Sox (Lester)**

-LVSC lists Boston as a $1.25 home ‘chalk’ over New York, with the total set at nine ‘over’ (minus $1.20). This American League East affair is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. ET.

-New York’s Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 5.06 ERA) has recorded back-to-back no decisions to start the season.

-The 24-year-old went 4 2/3 innings against Cleveland last Friday, surrendering five runs on six hits (one home runs) with five walks and four strikeouts. The Yankees eventually won that affair as a decided $2.15 home favorite, 6-5. The combined 11 runs eclipsed the nine-run closing total, helping the ‘over’ improve to 2-0 when he’s pitching.

-Chamberlain went 1-0 versus the Red Sox last year in two starts, tossing a combined 13 innings while yielding three runs on seven hits with five walks and 14 strikeouts. The Yankees prevailed as a $1.70 home ‘chalk,’ 5-4, and as a $1.25 road underdog, 1-0.

-Boston hurler Jon Lester (1-2, 5.50 ERA) finally got on the winning track by knocking off Baltimore Sunday as a $2.00 home favorite, 2-1. The four-year veteran tossed seven scoreless innings on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

-The combined three runs never seriously threatened the 10-run closing total, ending back-to-back ‘over’ outings for the left-hander.

-Lester went 2-0 versus the Yankees last season in three starts, going a combined 22 2/3 innings while being reached for three runs on 19 hits with three walks and 24 strikeouts. The Red Sox triumphed as a $1.30 road underdog, 7-0, and as a $1.75 home ‘chalk,’ 9-2, while losing as a $1.20 road underdog, 3-2. The ‘under’ went 2-1 during those three outings.

**Mariners (Bedard) at Angels (Loux)**

-LVSC installed Seattle as a $1.15 road favorite over Los Angeles, with the total listed at 8 ½ ‘under’ (minus $1.25). This AL West matchup is slated to begin at 10:05 p.m. ET.

-Seattle southpaw Erik Bedard (1-1, 1.86 ERA) heads to the hill for the first time since suffering his first setback of the season.

-The 30-year-old Canadian fell to Detroit Saturday as a $1.48 home ‘chalk,’ 2-0, tossing six innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

-The two runs never seriously threatened the eight-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ cash his second straight start.

-Bedard escaped with a no-decision against the Angels last year in his lone start against them. The eight-year veteran surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout over 3 1/3 innings. The Mariners ended up dropping that contest as a $1.33 home favorite, 5-4, while the combined nine runs toppled the 7 ½-run closing total.

-Los Angeles pitcher Shane Loux (0-1, 3.65 ERA) is still gunning for his first victory of the season after Sunday’s setback to Minnesota as a $1.30 road underdog, 3-1. The 29-year-old right-hander went seven innings, yielding three runs on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

-The combined four runs failed to eclipse the nine-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ cash his second straight start.

-Loux received a no-decision against Seattle April 14 after pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The Angels eventually dropped that affair as a $1.08 road favorite, 3-2, while the combined five runs went ‘under’ the 9 ½-run closing total.

SCOREBOARD

Friday, April 24

New York Yankees at Boston (7:10 p.m.). The AL East rivals meet for the first time this season. Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 5.06 ERA) starts for the Yankees against Boston’s Jon Lester (1-2, 5.50) in the opener at Fenway Park.

STARS

Thursday

— Grady Sizemore, Indians, hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning and Cleveland beat Kansas City 5-2.

— Dave Bush, Brewers, held Philadelphia hitless for 7 1-3 innings in Milwaukee’s 6-1 victory.

— Albert Pujols, Cardinals, homered twice as St. Louis beat the New York Mets 12-8 to complete a three-game sweep.

— Joey Votto, Reds, homered, doubled twice and singled to match a career high for hits in Cincinnati’s 7-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

— Chad Billingsley, Dodgers, pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning, leading Los Angeles to a 2-0 win over Houston.

— Felix Hernandez, Mariners, allowed four hits over seven innings in Seattle’s 1-0 victory against Tampa Bay.

LEADOFF HOMER

Ichiro Suzuki lined James Shields’ second pitch of the game for a home run, the only run of Seattle’s 1-0 victory over the Rays. It was the 22nd time a leadoff homer was the deciding run in a game, and it was just the second time it happened for the Mariners. Greg Briley’s shot provided the lone run June 19, 1992, against Minnesota.

DANGER ZONE

Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels left the game against the Milwaukee Brewers after being struck in the shoulder by a line drive in the fourth inning. One pitch after giving up a two-run homer to Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder laced an infield single that hit Hamels in the front of his left shoulder. Trainers immediately tended to Hamels, who left the game with what the team called a left shoulder contusion.

TURNAROUND

The Orioles’ Adam Eaton allowed six hits, struck out nine and walked none in 7 1-3 innings of a 6-2 win over the White Sox. The right-hander left with runners at the corners in the eighth, and Jim Thome ruined the shutout bid with a two-out, two-run single off Jim Johnson. Signed in March after being released by Philadelphia, Eaton had an 11.25 ERA in his first two starts with the Orioles and failed to last more than four innings.

SEARCHING STARTER

Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang threw 70 of 91 pitches for strikes over seven innings in an extended spring training game. Wang, who is 0-3 with a 34.50 ERA, was sent to the Yankees’ minor league complex to work on pitching consistency. He allowed five runs—four earned—nine hits and struck out 11 against Phillies minor leaguers. The right-hander has not been told if he will make his next start in the majors or the minors.

BACK TO THE BENCH

After playing one game at far less than full speed, Milton Bradley is back on the Chicago Cubs’ bench, nursing a lingering groin injury. He had only one hit in the season’s first week before sustaining the groin injury April 12 at Milwaukee. After going hitless in two pinch-hitting appearances, he returned to right field Wednesday and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

SIDELINED

The Toronto Blue Jays put closer B.J. Ryan and starter Ricky Romero on the 15-day disabled list. The two left-handers joined four Toronto righties on the DL. Ryan was put on the DL with soreness between his shoulder and back, one day after he blew his second save chance of the season. Romero was put on the DL with a strained muscle in his right side, retroactive to April 20. … The Rangers put reliever Willie Eyre on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right groin. They recalled Luis Mendoza from the minors to take Eyre’s spot.

HOW SWEEP IT IS

St. Louis beat the Mets 12-8 en route to sweeping New York in a three-game series at home for the first time since Aug. 6-8, 2004.

OFFENSIVE HELP

Cincinnati’s Aaron Harang finally got some run support in a 7-1 victory over the Cubs. The Reds had scored one, two and zero runs in his first three starts

SPEAKING

“A couple of years ago I was stuck in Double-A and I was throwing well, but I was never getting a shot. I thought I’d retire and go into horticulture, which was my major. But my wife said, `No, stick with it. I feel that this is going to be your year.’ I got to Triple-A and did very well. The big leagues came after that, and everything just kind of rolled from there.”—Angels starter Matt Palmer after he got his first big league victory, a 10-5 win over Detroit.

Tips and Trends

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox

Yankees: New York outspent Boston for slugger Mark Teixeira. “I expect heavy boos,” Teixeira said. “I expect nothing less from those fans. This is one of the greatest rivalries in sports. It’s great for baseball and it will always be great for baseball. If anything, the energy that comes from the fans being into it locks you in.” Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 5.06) will be looking for a bounce-back effort after giving up five runs and walking five in 4 2-3 innings against Cleveland last Friday. Chamberlain is 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA in six career appearances - two starts - versus the Red Sox.

The Over is 21-7 in the last 28 meetings in Boston.

Key Injuries - 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Xavier Nady (elbow) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-125, O/U 9.5): After a tough start, Boston has already matched their longest winning streak from all of last season by notching their seventh straight victory. They have averaged nearly eight runs per game during the streak. “I think the key is going to be which offense is going to be able to take advantage of mistakes,” said Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell. Jon Lester (1-2, 5.50 ERA) will be confident after pitching seven shutout innings in a 2-1 win over Baltimore on Sunday. Lester was 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA and 24 strikeouts in three starts versus the Yankees last year.

The Over is 14-3-1 in the Red Sox's last 18 on grass.
The Over is 10-1 in the Red Sox's last 11 overall.

Key Injuries - SS Jed Lowrie (wrist) is on the 15-day DL.
SS Julio Lugo (knee) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Minnesota vs. Cleveland

Cleveland won 5-2 yesterday while Minnesota is coming off a frustrating series against Boston. Cleveland is back inching closer to .500 as they are 6-10 on the year. Blackburn is 0-1 with a 5.71era this year and each of his starts individually have resulted in around a 5.5era. He is giving up about 4 runs every 5-6 innings or so. Carmona has given up 8 runs in the last 11 innings. He did pick up his first win over the Yankees as his team won 22-4. He is 1-2 with a 7.88era this year. Blackburn has pitched well in Cleveland going 1-0 with a 2.08era in 2 career starts at Progressive Field. Carmona was brutalized by the Twins last year for 9 runs in his only start against them but has good lifetime numbers against them at 3-3 with a 3.83era, he looks to avenge that loss today. It's hard for me to trust either of these teams or pitchers.

Detroit vs. KC

Detroit continues their road swing as they took 2 of 3 from the Mariners and 1 of 3 from the Angels, losing 5-10 in their last game. Porcello struggled at Toronto in his first start, but was brilliant in his second start against the Mariners in Safeco giving up 5 hits, 1 run on 7 inns. He is 1-1 with a 3.75era. Greinke has still yielded 0 runs in 20 inns as he is 3-0 with a 0era this year. He will be making a strong bid for the Cy Young this year along with Danks as they both showed flashes of brilliance last year. The Royals are 8-7 this year along with the Tigers. This game depends a bit on Porcello seeing if he can duplicate his strong start from the last game, as Greinke should be in top form as usual, I think Porcello will pick his game up as he faces Grienke today, small lean on the Under.

Seattle vs. LAA

Bedard has been brilliant in the early going of 2009. He is 1-1 with a 1.86era. Despite giving up 1 run in 6 inns he picked up the loss against the Tigers at home losing 0-2. Seattle took 2 of 3 from TB including winning 1-0 at home in their last game. Loux gave up his fair share of hits at Seattle, giving up 10 hits in 7 innings as he lost 1-3. He is 0-1 with a 3.65era thus far this year. After getting swept by the Twins on the road in a 3 game series, the Halos took 2 of 3 from Detroit at home. LA is 6-9 on the year. A lean on the Under here as both pitchers did not pick up a win in their last start.

TB vs. Oakland

Kaz is on a bounce-back after he was roughed up against the Whitesox at home losing 3-8 giving up 6 runs in 4 inns. His 1 road start this year was against the Resox at Fenway which was brilliant as he went 6 inns and gave up 1 run as the Rays went on to win 7-2. The Rays come off a frustrating 0-1 loss at Seattle. Cahill still in his honeymoon period with the AL, has pitched 3 solid games. He is 0-1 with a 2.6era as he comes off giving up 2 runs to the Jays on the road. Oak town comes off being swept by the Yankees on the road to fall to 5-9 on the year.
