Orioles put Mora on disabled list

BALTIMORE (AP) -Melvin Mora was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday by the Baltimore Orioles, who couldn't risk waiting a week or longer before the third baseman recovered from a sprained left foot.
The injury occurred during a play at the plate on July 1 against the Los Angeles Angels. Mora missed six straight games, then received one at-bat as a pinch-hitter the day before the All-Star break.
He started Thursday night but left after one inning. After undergoing an examination Friday, Mora said he would be out for at least a week. Instead of biding their time while he worked to return, the Orioles thought it best to place him on the DL.
``You don't want to play short-handed and it gives Melvin an opportunity to get right,'' interim manager Dave Trembley said.
Mora is batting .265 with a team-high 12 homers and 41 RBIs.
To fill the spot on the roster, the Orioles recalled outfielder Jon Knott from Triple-A Norfolk. Knott played in three games during two earlier stints with Baltimore this season, going 3-for-6 with three RBIs.
At Norfolk, Knott was batting .231, but he hit .333 in nine games in July. The Orioles had other options, but settled on Knott in part because he's on the 40-man roster.
``He's got some power. He's been up here before,'' Trembley said. ``Let's get him back up here and see if we can give him another chance.''
Knott was playing for the Tides in Ottawa when he got the word.
``I guess things happen when you least expect it, because we were all the way up in Ottawa and then the last time was right after a bus trip (to Buffalo),'' Knott said. ``I'm just glad to be back, that's for sure.''
Mariners recall LHP Jake Woods

SEATTLE (AP) -The Seattle Mariners recalled pitcher Jake Woods from Triple-A Tacoma and sent down pitcher Ryan Feierabend on Saturday.
It's the third time the left-handed Woods has been called up this season. He has a 5.19 ERA in 8 2-3 innings with the Mariners.
Feierabend, also a lefty, went 1-3 with a 9.31 ERA in seven big league games, including 6 starts. Over his last four starts, he was 0-2 with a 15.23 ERA.
Reds' Gonzalez placed on bereavement list

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds placed shortstop Alex Gonzalez on the bereavement list on Saturday.
In 83 games this season, Gonzalez is hitting .251 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI for the Reds.
This will be Gonzalez's second stint on the bereavement list this season as the 30-year-old was also on it in April and missed four games.
Angels place Kendrick on DL

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - The Angels placed second baseman Howie Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a fracture in his left index finger. The move is retroactive to July 8.
It is the second finger injury this season for Kendrick, who missed five weeks earlier this year after breaking a bone in the middle finger of his left hand April 17.
Kendrick is hitting .297 with four home runs and 18 RBI in 51 games this season for the Angels.
To take his spot, LA recalled infielder Brandon Wood from Triple-A Salt Lake.

BOSTON: DH David Ortiz hit his first homer at Fenway Park since April 24, a span of 34 games. Eleven of his 15 homers this season have come on the road. ... RHP Brendan Donnelly (strained right forearm) felt tightness in his injured arm while warming up for a Class-A rehab appearance on Friday night and was scratched. He's going to Anaheim, Calif., for a second opinion on Tuesday. ... J.D. Drew, who left Friday's game with a sore right hamstring, was not in the starting lineup. Manager Terry Francona said he did not expect a lengthy recovery.
KANSAS CITY: LHP John Bale was activated from the 60-day disabled list Saturday. He was placed on the DL in spring training because of tightness in his shoulder. Bale also strained his left gluteus while on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Omaha in early June. LHP Neal Musser was optioned to Omaha. To make room for Bale on the 40-man roster, the Royals placed RHP Roman Colon on the 60-day DL. Colon, acquired Friday from Detroit for a player to be named, has spent the entire season on the DL while recovering from offseason neck surgery. ... Manager Buddy Bell, who had surgery for a cancerous growth behind his left tonsil in September, got a checkup during the All-Star break. ``They said I was doing really good,'' Bell said. ... LHP Jimmy Gobble has made a team-leading 44 appearances. In a statistical oddity, he earned all three of his wins in a seven-day span (May 9-16) against one team, Oakland. ... RHP Scott Elarton (right foot sprain) allowed five runs and five hits in a rehab start at Triple-A Omaha on Friday.
CLEVELAND: LHP Aaron Fultz (strained right side) is scheduled to throw in the bullpen Monday. If he doesn't experience a problem, he will pitch a simulated game and then begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment. ... OF David Dellucci, who hasn't played since June 19 because of a torn left hamstring, has begun to jog on a treadmill. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff expects Dellucci, who had surgery on June 28, to return in mid-to-late August. ... RHP Fernando Cabrera had walked 16 in his last 15 2-3 innings. ... OF Shin-Soo Choo, on the disabled list at Triple-A Buffalo with a sprained elbow, will begin a throwing program next week. He's expected to return in August. ... RHP Cliff Politte, who has been pitching at Double-A Akron, is done for the season because of recurring pain in his shoulder. The Indians were hoping Politte, who had rotator cuff surgery last year, might be able to help them in the bullpen in the second half.
CHICAGO: RHP Jose Contreras continues to be concerned about his loss of velocity, but manager Ozzie Guillen says how hard Contreras is throwing isn't the issue. ``I don't think his problem is velocity,'' Guillen said. ``His problem is making pitches, throwing strikes.'' Contreras (5-10, 5.19 ERA) will start on Sunday. ... DH Jim Thome walked twice Friday night to move past Frank Robinson into 21st place on the career list with 1,421. ``I have always taken a lot of pride in walking because of my strikeouts,'' Thome said. ``By walking, you give your team a chance to score more runs.'' ... OF Darin Erstad (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Monday. ... INF Pablo Ozuna had the screw in his right ankle removed.

NEW YORK: CF Melky Cabrera was out of the starting lineup because of flulike symptoms. ``He's got an intestinal thing going on,'' manager Joe Torre said. Johnny Damon, who has been the primary designated hitter, started in center. LF Hideki Matsui was the DH. ... Torre made a special effort to watch Kei Igawa's bullpen session and came away impressed. The struggling left-hander (2-2, 7.14 ERA) will make his next start Monday against Toronto. ``Hopefully, that carries over to Monday,'' Torre said. ``I'm looking forward to Monday.'' ... RHP Darrell Rasner (broken right index finger) has resumed a throwing program. He threw at 75 feet in his third session.
TAMPA BAY: RHP Al Reyes, who converted 17 of 18 save opportunities before going on the 15-day disabled list with a mild rotator cuff strain, will throw one inning Monday in a minor league rehab appearance at Class-A Vero Beach. Barring a setback, he's expected to be activated on Wednesday. ... C Josh Paul (left elbow strain) took batting practice and is scheduled to play for Vero Beach on Monday. ... LHP Scott Kazmir struck out seven during Friday's 6-4 victory over the Yankees, becoming the 15th left-hander to fan at least 500 batters before his 24th birthday. Kazmir turns 24 on Jan. 24.
OAKLAND: Travis Buck was activated from the 15-day disabled list and infielder J.J. Furmaniak was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. On the DL since June 28 with a sprained right thumb, Buck started in left field in place of Shannon Stewart, whose 15-game hitting streak ended Friday. ``With Buck back in the outfield mix we'll give some guys a day off here and there. Shannon's been out there almost every day,'' manager Bob Geren said. ... Injured closer Huston Street was scheduled to play catch during his rehab assignment in Arizona. The plan is still for him to throw to hitters on Monday. ... DH Mike Piazza went 2-for-5 in his first rehabilitation game with Sacramento on Friday. He is penciled in for seven to 10 games at Triple-A. ... Kurt Suzuki started at catcher in place of Jason Kendall. Geren said it was just a breather for Kendall.
MINNESOTA: Garrett Jones started at first base, with Justin Morneau serving as the designated hitter. Since his recall Thursday, Jones has taken extra practice in the Metrodome outfield. ``He's a first baseman by trade and we've moved him to the outfield, mostly right, some left,'' manager Ron Gardenhire said. ... Morneau hasn't had a break due to his participation in Monday's Home Run Derby, Tuesday's All-Star game and his attendance at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday. ``We talked about a DH spot, so it's a good time, it's perfect,'' Gardenhire said. ``We've got a guy up here like (Jones) who can play first.'' ... Gardenhire said Juan Rincon, who allowed three earned runs in one-third of an inning Friday, has been inconsistent in his delivery and is overthrowing a little, which has led to him just missing his spots. ``The big thing is how to get his confidence back up,'' Gardenhire said. ... Long reliever Ramon Ortiz has not pitched since July 6, and Gardenhire said he needs to find a way to get the right-hander into a game, including the possibility of a short outing. ``It's about keeping him sharp. They're all one big group out there, and he's got his role along with the rest of them,'' Gardenhire said.
DETROIT: C Ivan Rodriguez appealed his one-game suspension that Major League Baseball issued Saturday after he made contact with an umpire during an argument Thursday. Rodriguez said the penalty, which also included an undisclosed fine, is ``just not right.'' ... 2B Placido Polanco was back in the lineup for the first time since getting one at-bat as the starter in Tuesday's All-Star game. Polanco has had a sore back for more than a week. Manager Jim Leyland said he will rest Polanco again on Sunday so he can have consecutive off days. The Tigers don't play Monday.
SEATTLE: 1B Richie Sexson entered Saturday in an 0-for-16 slump that had his average back down to .200. McLaren said Sexson's left thumb is still ``beat up pretty bad'' since he bruised it during a game July 2. McLaren said the Mariners thought they would have to place Sexson on the DL when he missed three of four games July 3-6, but then the slugger told them he was ready to play again. McLaren said he is certain Sexson will get hot soon, so he is not going to move him down in the lineup as predecessor Mike Hargrove did briefly last month. ... LHP Ryan Feierabend was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, but McLaren said the rookie will be back July 24 to start one of the games of a doubleheader at Texas. LHP Horacio Ramirez will return to from the DL he's been on since May 25 on Monday and start against Baltimore. LHP Jake Woods was recalled from Tacoma and put into the bullpen.
TEXAS: CF Kenny Lofton was brief and to the point when asked Saturday to respond to former Yankee teammate Gary Sheffield's negative comments about New York manager Joe Torre. During an interview scheduled to air Tuesday night on HBO's ``Real Sports,'' Sheffield claimed that black players were handled differently in the clubhouse than white players - specifically Lofton and Tony Womack. Sheffield also stated that black players would be ``called out'' in the clubhouse by Torre, while the white players would be called into Torre's office to discuss matters. ``All I can say is, Sheffield knows what he's talking about. That's all I'm going to say,'' Lofton told the AP in the Rangers' dugout just before the team took batting practice. ... Sunday will make two full weeks since RHP Akinori Otsuka was sidelined because of stiffness in his forearm, but he wasn't put on the DL. ``He's a commodity that you're willing to wait on,'' said manager Ron Washington, who is hoping to use him within the next day or so. ``He really hasn't hurt us by taking the time off. ``We've been able to get things done and we haven't been in a situation where we've overworked anyone with him down.''
LOS ANGELES: RHP Ervin Santana, the only member of the Angels' starting rotation with a losing record, had a bullpen session that he hopes will help turn things around. He is 5-10 with a 5.97 ERA, and entered Saturday having allowed the most home runs (23), runs (75) and earned runs (69) in the majors. But manager Mike Scioscia insisted that he is not going to be on a short leash, or that he should be looking over his shoulder at a possible demotion to the bullpen. ``We're not going to talk about stuff like that,'' Scioscia said. ``I mean, we'll always evaluate things. Obviously, with any player, if there's options that come up that are going to make you a better team, you consider them at that time. But our goal is to get Ervin where he needs to be.''

HOUSTON: The Astros struggled to score runs Friday with the wind blowing in when they were shut out. They had problems again Saturday with it blowing out, scoring two of their three runs in the ninth when they were already well behind. ``We should have scored some runs today. It was a good day to hit,'' Astros manager Phil Garner said. ``We should be hitters when the wind is blowing out, just like they should be. We just didn't hit the ball.'' ... Roy Oswalt has lost four straight to the Cubs, dating back to July 5, 2006. ... Carlos Lee went 0-for-3 to snap his nine-game hitting streak. Strangely enough with a 15 mph wind blowing out, a ball he hit well to center field didn't carry out. ... Chris Burke, who will get more playing time in the second half with Craig Biggio getting more time off, started at second and went 1-for-4. He got a triple leading off the game when Cubs right fielder Cliff Floyd missed a diving catch and hurt his shoulder.
CHICAGO: Cliff Floyd's left shoulder was hurting after the game. He missed a diving catch on the first ball hit in the game and had to leave after one inning because of a strain. He's not sure how long he will be out. ``The ground in the outfield over there is really hard and it cost me a day,'' Floyd said. Floyd had just gotten a cortisone shot Monday for a sore elbow. ``Right now it's not looking good. Hopefully I'll get a good night's sleep and with the medication I'll feel better tomorrow,'' he said. ... RHP Kerry Wood faced three batters in an Arizona Rookie League game Saturday and struck them all out in a 14-pitch outing. He's been on the DL all season because of a sore shoulder. ... Ted Lilly's strikeout of Hunter Pence in the third inning was the 900th of the left-hander's career. ... Alfonso Soriano hit his second three-run homer of the season and team-leading 16th overall. The other 14 have been solo shots.
WASHINGTON: CF Nook Logan came to Dolphin Stadium on Saturday with his legs feeling a little more worked than usual. Logan scored four times Friday, becoming just the third Nationals player ever to score four runs in a game. ``It's fun when you score runs,'' Logan said. ``I don't mind running a little more.'' ... LHP Matt Chico made his 19th career start Saturday, and is the only Nationals starter to begin 2007 in the rotation and not miss a turn. ... The 14 runs Washington scored Friday were the most by the team in a single game since the franchise relocated from Montreal. The previous high was 12, set twice: May 23 at Cincinnati and April 8, 2006, against Houston.
FLORIDA: LHP Taylor Tankersley rejoined the club Saturday after being sent down to Triple-A Albuquerque on June 30. Tankersley said his struggles this season have been due to a lack of confidence, not mechanics. ``Confidence is a huge, huge factor in this game,'' Tankersley said. ``The hitters, they smell it and they can tell if you don't have it.'' Tankersley went 2-1 with a 2.85 ERA in 49 games last season, but is 4-1 with a 6.65 ERA this year. ... INF Brett Boone will not do any physical activity for at least five days, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. The 34-year-old Boone injured his left knee during a cutoff play and was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 27. The injury flared up again while trying to field balls as part of a rehab assignment Friday.
ST. LOUIS: LHP Mike Maroth's RBI in the second inning was the third of his career and first since June 24, 2005. ... After ending a 22-game homerless skid on Friday, Albert Pujols went deep again on Saturday ... The Cardinals are on their longest road trip (10 games in 10 days) to open the second half of the season since an 11-game trip in 2001. The Cardinals went 4-7 on that trip.
PHILADELPHIA: SS Jimmy Rollins hit his 22nd career leadoff home run. It also was his fifth this season, setting a new team record. Juan Samuel (1989), Lenny Dykstra (1993) and Rollins (2004-06) all hit four in a season. ... Rollins also had his 10th three-hit game and 37th multi-hit game, the most among NL players. ... CF Aaron Rowand tied his career high with three doubles. ... The Phillies optioned RHP Anderson Garcia to Triple-A Ottawa. They also purchased the contract of RHP Clay Condrey from Ottawa and moved RHP Jon Lieber to the 60-day disabled list. ... Injured closer Brett Myers threw a bullpen session in Clearwater, Fla., and will throw to live batters on Tuesday.
PITTSBURGH: LHP Zach Duke was eligible to come off the disabled list on Saturday, but instead he remained shut down until he is free of pain caused by tendinitis in his left elbow. Duke is at the team's spring headquarters in Bradenton, Fla. ... C Ryan Doumit took batting practice and is expected to start on Sunday as he recovers from a strained left hamstring. ... RHP Salomon Torres, on the 15-day disabled list because of inflammation in his right elbow, gave up only one hit in 1 1-3 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday. Torres could be activated after making one more rehab appearance.
ATLANTA: Hitting coach Terry Pendleton had a scare with an irregular heartbeat on Friday. He was examined at Piedmont Hospital and was cleared to return to the stadium for Friday night's game. He supervised batting practice as normal on Saturday. Pendleton, who turns 47 on Monday, said ``It's something that happens at our age.'' ... Manager Bobby Cox said he hasn't seen the new ESPN miniseries ``The Bronx is Burning,'' which details the New York Yankees' 1977 season - when Cox was the team's first-base coach. When asked who should play him in the show, Cox said ``George Clooney.''
COLORADO: Rookie SS Troy Tulowitzki became the seventh player in Rockies history to hit at least 10 home runs in his first season in the Major Leagues. Todd Helton holds the franchise record with 25 home runs in his rookie season in 1998. Eight of Tulowitzki's home runs have come in the past five weeks. ... The Colorado bullpen pitched four shutout innings Friday, the third time in the past four games relievers have pitched at least four shutout innings. ... RHP Aaron Cook (5-6) will try to even his record when he starts the series finale Sunday against Milwaukee. Cook has lost five of his last eight starts during which he's gone 1-5 with a 5.47 ERA.
MILWAUKEE: With his home run Friday night in the 88th game of the season, 1B Prince Fielder became the fastest player in Brewers' history to reach 30 home runs in a season. The record was previously held by OF Greg Vaughn, who reached 30 home runs in the 101st game in 1996. ``Prince is having a great year,'' Brewers manager Ned Yost said. ``He started the second half just like he played the first half.'' ... Entering Saturday's game, the Brewers have gone 17 consecutive games without a save. The last save came from Francisco Cordero on June 20 against San Francisco. ... RHP Jeff Suppan will try to get his season turned around when he starts the series finale Sunday against Colorado. Suppan is 3-6 with 6.65 ERA in his last 12 games after starting the season 5-2 with a 2.63 ERA.
SAN DIEGO: RHP Jake Peavy threw a bullpen session on Saturday and is on schedule to start Tuesday night against the New York Mets in San Diego. Manager Bud Black said Peavy, who started the All-Star game, had come out of the break with a tired arm. ... Black gave OF Milton Bradley a day off Saturday but said he'll be back in the lineup against Brandon Webb on Sunday. ... Former University of Arizona baseball coach Jerry Kindall dropped in at Chase Field on Saturday to say hello to RHP Trevor Hoffman, a former Wildcat. Hoffman, the career saves leader, played shortstop for Kindall. ``I still get a lot of ribbing about that,'' Kindall said. ... With his loss Friday night at Arizona, RHP Greg Maddux fell to 1-10 with a 5.28 ERA in 16 career starts against the Diamondbacks.
ARIZONA: With OF Jeff Salazar making a strong first impression, the Diamondbacks aren't likely to rush OF Jeff DaVanon back from a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tucson. DaVanon has missed the entire season with a shoulder injury. ... RHP Brandon Webb faces the Padres on Sunday for the third time this season. Webb pitched eight innings in each of his first two starts, allowing one earned run once and two the other time. Webb is 3-5 with a 3.66 ERA lifetime against San Diego and has not beaten them in his last four starts.
CINCINNATI: Brandon Phillips hit another early homer off the Mets. His 19th led off the second inning, a night after he hit a first-inning grand slam. ... SS Alex Gonzalez was placed on the bereavement list. ... Manager Pete Mackanin said he wanted to rest Ken Griffey Jr. either Saturday or Sunday. Junior hit third and played RF Saturday night. ... Cincinnati is on an 11-game road trip to start the second half. The Reds have no off days during the trip, and won't get one until July 30.
NEW YORK: RHP Jorge Sosa will be ready to start Monday. He said his strained left hamstring is better. Mike Pelfrey, who made his first relief appearance on Friday night, would have started in his place. ... Ruben Gotay extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games with a single in the first. Cincinnati 2B Brandon Phillips was able to barehand the bouncing grounder, but was caught flat-footed and Gotay beat the throw. ... Paul Lo Duca ended a hitless stretch of 17 at bats with a single leading off the second. ... The Mets will give two tickets to an August home game to anyone who donates blood for the New York Blood Center at Shea Stadium on Thursday.
LOS ANGELES: LHP Mark Hendrickson pitched two innings of relief to get the win. Earlier in the game, Hendrickson threw a side session as he prepares for his scheduled start on Tuesday against Philadelphia. ``He's fine. He hadn't pitched since last Sunday,'' manager Grady Little said. ``He will be fine for the start on Tuesday.'' ... After converting 23 of his first 24 save chances, All-Star closer Takashi Saito has blown two in a row. ``My job as a closer is to come in and get outs,'' Saito said through an interpreter. ``When I'm on the mound that's all I care about.'' ... LHP Randy Wolf played catch before the game as he works his way back from a shoulder injury. ``It's feeling better every day,'' Wolf said.
SAN FRANCISCO: OF Randy Winn hopes to play Sunday despite bruising his right foot when he fouled off a pitch in the eighth inning. After being treated by the trainer, Winn hit the next pitch for a grand slam before leaving the game. ``There's a lot of ice in my future,'' Winn said. ... With the Giants in a stretch of playing 48 games in 48 days, manager Bruce Bochy said he'll have to monitor Barry Bonds' playing time. Bonds played all 12 innings Saturday, going 0-for-5 with a walk. ``He's going to need his days,'' Bochy said. ``I don't know how many. It's a rough schedule. We're going to be in some hot weather. We'll see where he's at as we go deeper into this.'' ... LHP Jonathan Sanchez (rib cage strain) was scheduled to pitch one inning in a rehab assignment Saturday night for Class-A San Jose.
Pirates shelve Bautista

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates placed infielder Jose Bautista on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a left hand laceration.
Bautista suffered the injury trying to swipe third base in the second inning of the team's game against Atlanta on Saturday. Bautista's hand was cut on the cleat of Braves third baseman Chipper Jones.
Bautista is hitting .258 with seven home runs and 33 runs batted in for the Pirates this season.
To replace Bautista on the roster, the Pirates recalled pitcher Salomon Torres from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis and reinstated him from the 15-day DL.
Torres was originally shelved on June 9 with right elbow inflammation. The reliever is 0-3 with a 5.14 earned run average and 12 saves this year.
The Pirates also purchased the contract of utilityman Dan Kelly from Indianapolis and designated pitcher John Wasdin for assignment. Wasdin was 1-1 with a 5.95 ERA this season.
Mets activate Perez from DL

NEW YORK (AP) -The Mets activated pitcher Oliver Perez from the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds.
The left-handed Perez, who had been on the DL since July 3 because of stiffness in his back, was the starting pitcher in the finale of New York's four-game series with Cincinnati.
Perez made one rehabilitation start for the Gulf Coast League Mets and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks with seven strikeouts. He is 7-6 with a 3.14 ERA in 15 starts for the Mets.
The Mets designated lefty Dave Williams for assignment to make room for Perez.
