Timlin placed on DL

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox placed relief pitcher Mike Timlin on the 15-day disabled list because of right shoulder tendinitis.
Timlin is 1-0 with a 6.23 earned run average in nine appearances this season with one save. He has not been able to shake the discomfort in his throwing arm that has been bothering him since spring training.
In a corresponding move, Boston recalled right-handed pitcher Devern Hansack from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Pirates' Wasdin placed on DL

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates placed pitcher John Wasdin on the 15-day disabled list due to a right thumb strain.
The 34-year-old right-hander is 1-1 with a 6.92 earned run average in nine appearances this season.
The Florida State product has a 39-39 career record with two complete games, seven saves and a 5.29 ERA in 325 games (65 starts).
To replace Wasdin on the roster, the Pirates recalled pitcher Marty McLeary from Triple-A Indianapolis. McLeary is 2-0 with a 4.22 ERA in eight games (two starts) with the Pirates this season.
Yankees' Hughes placed on DL

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - New York Yankees rookie pitcher Phil Hughes was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a strained left hamstring, becoming the seventh Yankees hurler to go on the DL this season.

Eight outs away from a no-hitter, Hughes left Tuesday's 10-1 victory over Texas in the seventh inning with a hamstring injury.
Despite the victory, the news after the game was not good for Hughes, who is expected to be out 4-to-6 weeks.
With New York holding a commanding 9-0 lead in the seventh, Hughes had Texas slugger Mark Teixeira in a 0-2 hole. Teixeira then fouled off a pitch and the young hurler came off the mound with discomfort in his left hamstring area. Huddled around manager Joe Torre, pitching coach Ron Guidry and a trainer, Hughes eventually headed for the dugout.
Hughes, who was replaced by Mike Myers, finished with six strikeouts and three walks in 6 1/3 innings, as he picked up his first major league victory.
The combined no-hitter attempt was broken up in the eighth as Hank Blalock doubled to right to lead off the frame.
Giants place Ortiz on DL

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants placed starting pitcher Russ Ortiz on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with right elbow neuritis.
Ortiz surrendered nine hits and eight runs in just 3 1/3 innings against Colorado on Tuesday as the Giants lost 9-7.
In five starts this season, Ortiz, who signed a one-year contract with San Francisco in the offseason, is 2-2 with a 6.44 ERA.
To take his spot on the roster, the Giants recalled infielder Kevin Frandsen from Triple-A Fresno.
Indians activate Lee from DL; Perez recalled from Triple-A Buffalo

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians have activated pitcher Cliff Lee from the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Rafael Perez from Triple-AAA Buffalo.
Lee will make his first start of the season Thursday night against Toronto.
The Arkansas product was placed on the disabled list April 1 after straining an abdominal muscle during a bullpen session in February. He was 14-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 33 starts last season.
Perez was 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance with Buffalo and will be used as a long reliever. Perez has allowed 21 hits and nine earned runs in 21 2/3 innings.
To allow room for Lee and Perez the Indians optioned outfielder Ben Francisco and outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to Triple-A Buffalo.
Choo, brought up from Buffalo on April 23, batted .294 (5-for-17) with five RBI in six games. Francisco was recalled from Buffalo on May 1 and made his major league debut that night.
D-backs activate Owings from 15-day DL

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks activated Micah Owings from the 15-day disabled list Thursday to start against the New York Mets.
Owings was sidelined April 17 with a hamstring injury, after posting a 1-1 record with a 2.93 ERA in his first three major league starts.
Arizona optioned infielder Brian Barden to Triple-A Tuscon to clear room for Owings.
Rasner and DeSalvo to start for Yankees

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Yankees will bring up right-handers Darrell Rasner and Matt DeSalvo to fill their depleted rotation for their weekend series against Seattle, putting them on track to become the first team in major league history to use 10 starters in its first 30 games.
Rasner is scheduled to make his fourth start Sunday, with DeSalvo making his major league debut in Monday's series finale. Manager Joe Torre said Thursday he scheduled DeSalvo for the later game with the idea of keeping him in the rotation.
DeSalvo cleared waivers in February and was sent outright to the minors. He was 1-6 with a 7.68 ERA at Triple-A last year, when he also spent time at Double-A, and is 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA this season in five starts with Triple-A Scranton.
''We feel that Matty, maybe this is his time,'' Torre said. ''We'll see. We're certainly testing a lot of kids right now.''
Before this year, three teams used nine starters in the first 30 games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau: the 1911 St. Louis Browns, 1946 New York Giants and 1955 Baltimore Orioles. This year's Yankees already have tied that mark, with Andy Pettitte (six starts); Kei Igawa (four); Mike Mussina and Rasner (three apiece); Phil Hughes, Jeff Karstens, Carl Pavano, Chien-Ming Wang and Chase Wright (two each).
Hughes was placed on the DL list Thursday, the seventh Yankees pitcher to go on the DL this season. New York recalled right-hander Chris Britton before its 4-3 win over Texas in the first game of a doubleheader, then optioned him to Scranton between games so the Yankees could activate Mussina for the second game. Mussina made his first start since he strained a hamstring April 11.
Hughes, a 20-year-old considered one of baseball's top prospects, pitched 6 1-3 hitless innings Tuesday night in his second major league start, then strained a hamstring. It marked the Yankees' fourth hamstring injury this season and led general manager Brian Cashman to fire strength and conditioning coach Marty Miller on Wednesday.
In a statement released through the Yankees on Thursday, Miller said he appreciated the chance New York gave him and said the result ''certainly wasn't for a lack of preparation or dedication on my part.''
''I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to work with the New York Yankees,'' Miller's statement said. ''Although many differing factors are at play when conditioning athletes at this level, I will never be one to skirt responsibility.''
Pavano, still sidelined by a stiff forearm. is trying to schedule an appointment with orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. Pavano, who has made two appearances with the Yankees since June 2005, cut short a bullpen session Wednesday because of discomfort. He hasn't pitched in a game since April 9.
Pavano said the pain has been consistent since he resumed throwing.
''We'll see what Dr. Andrews says since he's the professional,'' Pavano said. ''I just know what I feel.''
Pavano is 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA in two starts, his first appearances for the Yankees following 1 1/2 years of shoulder, back, buttocks, elbow and rib injuries that caused many to question his desire to pitch and some to ridicule him.
''You certainly need to find out how to help him along in this area,'' Torre said this week. ''Is it total rest? Maybe the mound a couple times is too much? I don't know.''

The St. Louis Cardinals were among an estimated 500 mourners for Josh Hancock, who died in an automobile accident early Sunday. The 29-year-old Hancock was driving a rented Ford Explorer early Sunday when it crashed into a flatbed tow truck on a highway in St. Louis. Hancock broke into the major leagues in 2002 and played for four teams. He was 3-3 with one save last season and led Cardinals relievers in innings with 77.

Injured veteran Sanders placed on DL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Royals outfielder Reggie Sanders has a torn left hamstring and will be put on the 15-day disabled list Friday.
The 39-year-old was injured running the bases against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. He had been platooning and his role figured to be diminished when rookie outfielder Billy Butler was called up from Triple-A Omaha.
Kansas City was expected to fill Sanders' spot by recalling outfielder Shane Costa from Omaha. On Thursday, Costa extended his hitting streak at Triple-A to 19 games.
Chris Capuano will not miss a start despite being hit in the right calf by a batted ball Wednesday, the Associated Press reports. Capuano left that game after three innings of work.
Ned Yost said that he was never worried about Capuano even though he took him out of the game. "Nah, not on something like that. It would really surprise me if he would miss a start with a contusion in that area," Yost said.
Twins RF Michael Cuddyer (back) is doubtful.
Angels CF Garret Anderson (hip) is listed as out overnight.
Phillies place Gordon on DL

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies placed closer Tom Gordon on the 15-day disabled list Friday with right rotator cuff inflammation. The move is retroactive to May 2.
On Wednesday, the Phillies announced that Gordon would not be traveling with the team on their current road trip because of discomfort in his right shoulder. He was examined by team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti on Thursday.
Gordon, who has three blown saves in eight chances this season, last pitched in Philadelphia's 6-4 win over the Braves on Tuesday.
Problems with Gordon's shoulder also landed him on the disabled list last season, and he left the team during spring training before this season started to have his shoulder re-examined.
In nine games this season, Gordon is 1-1 with five saves and a 4.82 earned run average.
To take Gordon's spot on the roster, the Phillies purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Yoel Hernandez from Triple-A Ottawa.
Former starter Brett Myers has stepped into the closer's role for Philadelphia. On Thursday, he notched his first-career save in a 9-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
The 39-year-old Gordon is eligible to come off the disabled list on May 17.
Marlins activate Julio, option Sanchez

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins activated reliever Jorge Julio from the 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned pitcher Anibal Sanchez to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Julio has been out since April 18 with a right calf strain. The right-hander was recently demoted from the closer role with the Marlins after a horrid start to the season. He has allowed an astonishing 12 earned runs on 15 hits with 11 walks in just 5 2/3 innings of work this season. He has posted an 0-2 mark with two blown saves in his only chances.
He was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to the start of the season in exchange for pitcher Yusmeiro Petit.
Sanchez is 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA in six starts with the Marlins this season. In 30 innings he has allowed 43 hits and walked 19.
Padres' Hensley placed on DL; Hampson recalled

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres placed right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right groin and recalled left-hander Justin Hampson from Triple-A Portland
The 27-year-old Hensley left Wednesday's game against Washington in the top of the third inning. He is 1-3 this season with a 7.62 ERA over his first six starts. The Lamar product has a career major league record of 13-16 with a 3.76 ERA in 67 games (36 starts) with San Diego stretching from 2005-07.
Hampson has made three appearances overall with the Padres this season, going 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA.
