Brewers' Suppan leaves in sixth after being hit on leg

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Brewers right-handed starter Jeff Suppan left Saturday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates two batters after being hit off the right leg with a sharp grounder in the sixth inning.
Suppan pitched five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth, giving up an RBI single to Adam LaRoche after putting two on with nobody out. Ryan Doumit's hard bouncer deflected off Suppan's leg and squirted nearly all the way to the Brewers' bullpen, where first baseman Prince Fielder fielded it and caught LaRoche between second and third base.
Jason Bay then broke for home in an effort to help LaRoche, and was tagged out by catcher Damian Miller for a 1-3-6-2 putout.
Suppan was visited by trainer Roger Caplinger and manager Ned Yost, but stayed in the game to face two more batters. He reached 98 pitches when he was pulled for left-hander Brian Shouse and appeared to show no ill-effects from the play while running from the mound to the dugout after being taken out of the game.
Carpenter to undergo elbow surgery

ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter, sidelined since opening day with an elbow injury, will undergo arthroscopic surgery early next week after suffering a setback in his rehab program.
Carpenter, a 15-game winner last year and the NL Cy Young award winner in 2005, will be out at least three months, the team said Saturday. An exam on Friday with Dr. George Paletta, the team's medical supervisor, revealed recurrent swelling, stiffness and loss of motion.
Carpenter threw about 60 pitches to teammates in a simulated game on Tuesday in Milwaukee, and said he felt fine afterward. He went on the 15-day disabled list on April 10 with swelling in the elbow that developed a few hours after he allowed five runs in six innings in a season-opening loss to the New York Mets on April 1.
The surgery was announced during the game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. The Cardinals had been hoping Carpenter would return to the rotation on Tuesday.
Rangers' Millwood goes on 15-day DL

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The Texas Rangers placed right-hander Kevin Millwood on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 29 on Saturday, prior to the game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Rangers' top starter, Millwood -- 2-3 with a 5.88 ERA in six starts -- strained his left hamstring last Wednesday while shagging fly balls in the outfield. He missed a scheduled start the next day against the New York Yankees.
Right-handed reliever Wes Littleton was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma to take Millwood's roster spot. Right-hander Mike Wood is the probable replacement for Millwood in the Rangers' rotation during their three-game series at New York starting next Tuesday.
If Wood has to pitch in long relief during the rest of the weekend series against Toronto, the Rangers might have to call up a starter from the minors for the Yankees series.
Millwood will miss at least one more start, but expects to be ready to take his turn in the rotation during a four-game home series next weekend against the Los Angeles Angels.
On Friday, Millwood said the hamstring was improving and he would not need to go on the disabled list. But Rangers management decided that a trip to the DL would prevent Millwood from trying to rush back onto the mound.
"That hamstring, it's still tender, he can't finish his pitches, so it's in his best interests," manager Ron Washington said. "If we don't put him on the DL, he'll be around here being a pest, trying to get in the lineup and pitch. This way, he can go at his own pace and get right."
Millwood wasn't pleased with the decision, but accepted it.
"I'd prefer not to (go on the DL) but it's not my choice," Millwood said. "I'm not really happy to go on the DL. But there is no lobbying. They made a decision and that's that. You just go with it."
Millwood threw off flat ground on Saturday and said he's progressing.
"It's feeling better every day but it hasn't gone away," Millwood said.
Mariners pitcher Mateo arrested in NYC attack on woman

NEW YORK (AP) -- Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Julio Mateo was arrested Saturday following a dispute at a Manhattan hotel that left his female companion needing five stitches to her mouth, police said.
Police initially identified the woman as Mateo's wife, but later said it was unclear whether that was true.
The 6-foot, 220-pound reliever was arrested on a charge of third-degree assault and was awaiting arraignment, police said.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, police said, shortly after the Mariners defeated the New York Yankees 15-11 in a game where Mateo did not pitch.
Mateo was not at the hotel when police arrived, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wysokowski said.

The 29-year-old Mateo voluntarily turned himself in at a Manhattan police station early Saturday evening. It was not immediately clear whether he had retained a lawyer, and an e-mail and phone message to his agent, Martin Arburua, were not immediately returned.
The woman was treated for her injuries at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan, according to Wysokowski.
"We've encouraged Julio to cooperate with the proper authorities and it's our understanding that's what he plans to do," Mariners spokesman Tim Hevly said. "Otherwise while this is in the legal system, we can't have any further comment."
Hevly said he was unsure of Mateo's whereabouts when New York played the Mariners on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. There was no sign of the Dominican Republic native in the Mariners' clubhouse before the game, and his jersey was hanging in his locker.
After Seattle's 8-1 loss, Mateo was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma. He was 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in nine games this season.
"It has nothing to do with what has gone on," Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said. "It has everything to do with the fact that we were playing a man short today and we don't know anything about the situation as far as how long it's going to take or last."
Mateo was in the final season of a $1,875,000, two-year contract. He and his wife, Aurea, had their second child, Julian, in March.
Last year, Mateo was leading all major league relievers with nine wins when an August weightlifting accident sidelined him with a broken left hand. The righty was 9-4 with a 4.19 ERA in 48 games last season.
Zumaya Injured In Warmup
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- While winning a wild ballgame, Detroit may have lost a valuable pitcher before he could even get onto the field.
Joel Zumaya, whose fastball can exceed 100 mph, was warming up in the bullpen during Saturday night's 7-5 victory over Kansas City when he "felt something pop" in the middle knuckle of his pitching hand. He was hurried to the hospital and later put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right finger.
"He threw a pitch in the bullpen, a fastball, and this joint, this [middle] knuckle, he felt something pop," manager Jim Leyland said. "He's being checked out at the hospital."
The Tigers recalled right-hander Aquilino Lopez, who made three appearances for Detroit last month before being sent back to Triple-A Toledo.
A key member of the bullpen, Zumaya is 1-1 with a 3.63 ERA in 17 1/3 innings for the defending AL champions.
"I don't want to make any comments yet because I don't want to be premature," Leyland said. "But I can tell you this, if it is a situation where we've lost Joel for a period of time, then that tests the character of your team and other guys have to step up."
In 6 1/3 innings with the Tigers, Zquilino had no record and a 5.69 ERA.
The Phillies placed Ryan Madson on the disabled list Saturday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He said a strained abdominal muscle had been bothering him since spring training, but it wasn't until Thursday that it began to affect his pitching. Madson hopes to return when eligible on May 20.
Clemens will pitch again for the Yankees

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Roger Clemens will pitch again in 2007 and will do so for the New York Yankees.
Clemens made the announcement by addressing the crowd at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon during the seventh-inning stretch of the game against the Seattle Mariners.
"Well, they got me out of Texas. I can tell you it's a privilege to be back. I'll be talking to you all soon," Clemens said from owner George Steinbrenner's box.
Cubs recall Guzman

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs recalled pitcher Angel Guzman from Triple-A Iowa, slating the right-hander for Sunday's start against Washington.
In a corresponding move, the Cubs optioned infielder Ronny Cedeno to Iowa.
This is Guzman's second stint with Chicago this season. He began the year with the club, posting no record with a 2.45 earned run average in four relief appearances before being optioned to Iowa on April 17.
In three starts at Iowa, Guzman was 0-2 with a 12.19 ERA.
Cedeno was hitting just .097 (3-for-31) with two homers and four RBI in 16 games this season.
Cardinals put Wilson on DL

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Preston Wilson on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with soreness in his right knee.
The Cardinals also purchased the contracts of outfielder Ryan Ludwick and pitcher Brian Falkenborg from Triple-A Memphis, while optioning right-handed hurler Dennis Dove to Memphis.
Wilson, who has been hampered by the knee pain for much of the season, is batting just .219 with one home run and five RBI.
Ludwick has been red-hot on the Triple-A circuit, hitting .340 with a .642 slugging percentage in 29 games. Falkenborg, meanwhile, compiled a 2.03 ERA with nine saves this season for Iowa.
Marlins place Ross on 15-day DL, recall Reed

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins placed outfielder Cody Ross on the 15-day disabled list today with a strained left hamstring.
Ross, who was injured while scoring on Miguel Olivo's double in the team's 7-6 loss to the San Diego Padres last night, is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday or Tuesday. He was hitting .302 with four home runs and 14 RBIs in 19 games this season.
To take Ross's roster spot, the Marlins recalled outfielder Eric Reed from Triple-A Albuquerque. Reed is only 1-for-9 with a .111 average.
Mariners suspend Mateo

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners have suspended pitcher Julio Mateo for 10 days, without pay, after he missed Saturday's game against the New York Yankees without permission.
The club did not release further details, but the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Mateo was arrested early Saturday morning on charges of third- degree assault in an incident with a female companion at the team's hotel.
Mateo, who the paper said turned himself in to authorities, did not show up for Saturday's game against the Yankees. The Mariners then sent him to Triple- A Tacoma after the game.
The 29-year-old right-hander was 1-0 with a 3.75 earned run average in nine games this season.
