Afternoon Tip Sheet
By Brad Young

Thursday’s are travel days in Major League Baseball, meaning there is plenty of afternoon action before teams head to their next series. There are a couple of interesting matchups on tap in both the American and National Leagues, so let’s take a closer look at some key contests.

**Braves (Jurrjens) at Marlins (Sanchez)**

-Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed Atlanta as a $1.15 road ‘chalk’ over Florida, with the total set at 8 ½ ‘over’ (minus $1.30). This game is scheduled to begin at 12:10 p.m. ET.

-Atlanta right-hander Jair Jurrjens (2-2, 1.89 ERA) heads to the hill in search of his first victory in almost a month. The 23-year-old has gone 0-2 his last four starts after picking up Saturday’s no-decision against Houston.

-The Netherlands Antilles native lasted just two innings, allowing one run on four hits (one home run) with no walks and no strikeouts. The Braves ended up dropping that affair as a $1.20 home favorite, 5-1. The combined six runs failed to eclipse the 7 ½-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ cash his past four outings.

-Jurrjens went 1-1 against the Marlins last year in three games, going a combined 15 innings while surrendering 13 runs on 21 hits (two home runs) with seven walks and 10 strikeouts.

-The Braves prevailed as a $1.60 home ‘chalk,’ 7-5, and as a $1.45 home favorite, 10-9, while losing as a road ‘pick,’ 4-0. The ‘over’ went 2-1 during those three games.

-Florida’s Anibal Sanchez (1-3, 5.46 ERA) is currently mired in a three-game losing streak after Saturday’s setback to Chicago as a $1.25 road underdog, 6-1. The four-year veteran was reached for six runs on nine hits (two home runs) with four walks and five strikeouts over four innings.

-The combined seven runs failed to eclipse the 10-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ improve to 5-0 when he’s on the mound.

-Sanchez beat the Braves April 16 as a $1.15 road underdog, 6-2, tossing six innings while yielding two runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The combined eight runs slithered ‘under’ the 8 ½-run closing total.

**Giants (Cain) at Rockies (Marquis)**

-LVSC opened Colorado as a $1.25 home favorite over San Francisco, with the total listed at 9 ½ ‘over’ (minus $1.20). This game is slated to start at 3:10 p.m. ET.

-San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain (2-1, 3.09 ERA) gets another shot at Colorado after falling to the Rockies Saturday as a $1.25 home ‘chalk,’ 5-1. The veteran right-hander was tagged for five runs on seven hits (three home runs) with four walks and three strikeouts over six innings.

-The combined six runs went ‘under’ the eight-run closing total, ending a 3-0-1 ‘over’ streak for the 6-foot-3 hurler.

-Colorado’s Jason Marquis (4-1, 3.31 ERA) was the winning pitcher in that affair in a complete-game effort. The righty was reached for the lone run on five hits (one home run) with a walk and four strikeouts.

-The ‘under’ has cashed in two of his previous three starts.

**Mariners (Washburn) at Royals (Bannister)**

-LVSC lists Kansas City as a $1.20 home ‘chalk’ over Seattle, with the total set at nine. This American League contest is scheduled to begin at 2:10 p.m. ET.

-Seattle southpaw Jarrod Washburn (3-1, 2.97 ERA) is off a tough luck no-decision Saturday against Oakland, tossing seven solid innings while yielding one run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

-The Mariners eventually dropped that contest as a $1.35 home favorite, 3-2, while the combined five runs went ‘under’ the 8 ½-run closing total. The ‘under’ has gone 4-1 his five starts this season.

-Washburn went 0-1 against the Royals last year in two starts, going a combined 12 innings while allowing six runs (four earned) on 13 hits (two home runs) with a walk and seven strikeouts. The Mariners lost as a $1.18 home favorite, 5-1, and as a $1.20 road underdog, 5-4.

-Kansas City hurler Brian Bannister (2-0, 1.96 ERA) recorded a no-decision against Minnesota Saturday after winning his first two starts. The right-hander went 5 1/3 innings against the Twins, surrendering six runs (three earned) on eight hits (one home run) with two walks and four strikeouts.

-The Royals eventually won that matchup as a $1.35 road underdog, 10-7, while the combined 17 runs soared ‘over’ the 8 ½-run closing total. The ‘under’ had prevailed his first two starts of the season.

-The 28-year-old has not started against the Mariners the previous few seasons.

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Jair Jurrjens (Atlanta Braves)

The young righty’s name sounds more like a soccer player than a starting pitcher. He’s put in good work for the Braves to begin the year, posting a 2-2 record with a 1.89 ERA in six starts.

He would have a record more reflective of his efforts if Atlanta’s lineup would provide run support. The Braves have given Jurrjens an average of just 4.32 runs during his appearances, keeping him winless in his past four games.

"We can't keep wasting Jurrjens' good efforts," Chipper Jones told reporters. "The kid has pitched great and has nothing to show for it."

Jurrjens’ most recent start versus the Houston Astros was cut short due to rain. He pitched just over two innings, allowing a first-inning home run. In the start before that, he went six innings and gave up just two runs on six hits. He has allowed only seven earned runs in his six starts.

Dan Haren (Arizona Diamondbacks)

The D-backs right-handed starter has won three straight decisions heading into Thursday, most recently an eight-inning gem against the Milwaukee Brewers. Haren allowed just one run on four hits while striking out 11 batters.

Despite not having his best stuff, Haren has whiffed 21 batters in the past two games. He has 47 strikeouts on the year and posts a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.71.

"I was actually all over the place in the bullpen," Haren told the media following Saturday’s win. "I had a quick first inning. After that, I kind of locked it in. I had a good split and a good cut fastball. The breaking ball wasn't as good; I was trying to get a feel for it. Getting runs and being able to be real aggressive is nice."

Haren would have a better overall record if he got support from Arizona’s bats earlier in the schedule. But during this current winning streak, the Diamondbacks have gave their starter 13 total runs.

Slumping

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox)

The axe is hovering above Jose Contreras' spot in the rotation. After allowing seven run on seven hits in just over three innings of work against Texas Saturday, the White Sox are considering demoting the struggling righty.

"I don't want to give up on him," Ozzie Guillen told the press. "It's not my style, but I'd like to know what's going through my mind. I'm going crazy about it. It's driving his pitching coach (Don Cooper) crazy. The stuff is there. I've seen people get people out with less stuff, and that's a shame. Right now I don't have any answers about the next start. Right now I will pencil him in for the next start. We'll see if we change our mind the next couple days."

Contreras is 0-4 in five starts and lugs a chunky 8.31 ERA. He has given up 16 earned runs in his past three starts and has walked nine batters while striking out seven. Going back to 2008, Chicago is 1-7 in Contreras’ past eight starts.

Anibal Sanchez (Florida Marlins)

After a great start to the year, the Florida Marlins are coming back to earth. One of the reasons is the decline of starter Anibal Sanchez, who has lost three straight games heading into Thursday.

Sanchez began the year by giving up just two earned runs in his first two starts but has since allowed 19 earned runs during this current skid. In his most recent start, Sanchez served up six runs on nine hits including two home runs in four innings against the Chicago Cubs Saturday.

The damage is being done in the first inning, where Sanchez has allowed nine runs including three home runs in his past two starts. On the year, he has given up 14 hits in his first 15 pitches and has allowed opponents to hit .467 BA to begin games.

"The cold in particular makes me uncomfortable when it comes time to pitch," Sanchez told the Sun Sentinel. "That's not an excuse. I have to try to make some adjustments in that first inning, try to come in a little more aggressive and see what I can do. I'm expecting not to have that same problem [next time] in the first inning."

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Philadelphia (14-10) at N.Y. Mets (12-13)

The Mets and Phillies conclude a quick two-game series at new Citi Field, with Philadelphia’s Jamie Moyer (3-1, 5.65 ERA) set to oppose Mike Pelfrey (3-0, 6.00).

New York rode another Johan Santana pitching gem to Wednesday’s 1-0 win over the Phillies, giving the Mets their first three-game winning streak of the season. New York has also won four of its last five and is 9-3 in its last 12 Thursday contests, but it’s still 3-7 in its last 10 when facing opponents with a winning record.

The Phillies had their three-game overall and five-game road winning streaks halted with last night’s setback. Still, going back to last season’s run to the world championship, Philadelphia is on runs of 38-17 overall (8-3 in the last 11), 19-8 on the road and 16-6 as an underdog, and Charlie Manuel’s squad is also on upticks of 5-1 against right-handed starters and 6-3 against N.L. East foes.

Moyer gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings in Saturday’s home start against the Mets, but got bailed out as Philadelphia prevailed 6-5 at home in 10 innings. The 46-year-old southpaw has just one quality outing in his five starts this season, but he’s 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two road outings. Also, including Saturday’s outing, Moyer is 7-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 18 career starts against New York.

Pelfrey is coming off Friday’s 7-4 win at Philadelphia, as he surrendered three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He’s now 2-2 with a 4.28 ERA in five career starts against Philadelphia, giving up three earned runs or fewer in four of those contests but he’s lasted longer than 5 1/3 innings just once. The right-hander has made two starts at Citi Field this season, going 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA.

With Moyer pitching, Philadelphia is on stretches of 4-0 overall, 8-2 on the highway, 27-8 against the N.L. East, 6-2 on Thursday and 7-3 against New York, including 4-1 on the road. Meanwhile, the Mets are 17-8 in Pelfrey’s last 25 starts overall and 10-4 in his last 14 at home.

The Phillies carry “over” trends of 14-7-2 overall, 8-2-1 on the road, 6-2 as an underdog, 7-3-2 against the N.L. East and 4-0 with Moyer on the mound. However, the under is 11-5 in Moyer’s last 16 road starts, 13-4-1 in Moyer’s last 18 as an underdog, 8-3 in his last 11 starts against the Mets and 6-0 in his last six in New York. For New York, the under is on runs of 8-1-1 at home, 9-1-1 as a favorite and 11-4-2 against the N.L. East, but the over is 21-7-1 in their last 29 Thursday games and 6-2-1 in Pelfrey’s last nine home outings.

Finally, with last night’s one-run game, the under is now 12-5-1 in the last 18 head-to-head clashes in New York.

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tampa Bay (13-16) at N.Y. Yankees (13-14)

Andy Pettitte (2-1, 3.82) is scheduled to take the ball for the Yankees as they wrap up a two-game series against the Rays, who will counter with rookie Jeff Niemann (2-3, 1.66).

Tampa Bay got a 10th-inning home run from Carlos Pena to knock off New York 4-3 on Wednesday. The Rays have followed up a 4-11 slump by going 5-2 in their last seven, but they’re still in funks of 5-8 on the road, 5-17 against lefty starters and 35-74 on the road versus southpaws.

New York has lost four in a row (all at home) and eight of its last 12, scoring four runs or fewer in seven of those eight defeats. On the bright side, the Yanks are on hot streaks of 14-7 at home, 5-2 against losing teams and 17-9 as a favorite.

Going back to last year, New York is on an 8-4 roll in this rivalry. Also, Tampa Bay remains just 22-53 in its last 75 games in the Bronx.

New York is 5-1 in Pettitte’s last six starts overall, 5-0 in his last five as a favorite, 70-32 in his last 102 at home, 37-18 in his last 55 outings versus the A.L. East. Also, they’ve won 15 of his last 20 starts against the Rays, including seven of his last 10 in New York.

Pettitte’s string of four consecutive quality starts to being 2009 ended Friday against the Angels when he got tagged for five runs on nine hits and four walks in a season-low 5 2/3 innings. However, the Yankees rallied for a 10-9 victory, improving to 4-1 in Pettitte’s five outings this season, including 2-0 at home where the veteran lefty has a 4.97 ERA.

Pettitte is 15-4 with a 3.63 ERA in 26 career appearances (25 starts) versus the Rays, including a no-decision on April 15 in Tampa Bay when he allowed three runs in 7 1/3 innings, with New York eking out a 4-3 victory.

With Pettitte pitching, the under is on stretches of 37-14-1 overall, 17-7-1 at home, 19-7-1 against A.L. East foes, 6-0 when he faces the Rays and 8-2 when pitching against Tampa Bay in the Bronx.

Neiman gave up six runs (five earned) and lasted a season-low three innings in Saturday’s home effort against the Red Sox, losing 10-6. Prior to that, the rookie had posted two solid road starts, beating the Mariners 9-3 and the Twins 7-1 while yielding a combined three earned runs and six hits in 11 innings. The right-hander, who will face the Yankees for the first time tonight, is 2-1 with a 4.96 ERA in three starts on the highway.

The Rays are on “under” streaks of 5-1 on the road, 11-3 as an underdog, 8-3 when playing on grass and 18-6-1 on the highway against lefty starters. Conversely, the over for the Yankees is on streaks of 6-1-1 overall, 5-1-1 at home, 7-4-1 against divisional rivals, 6-0 on Thursday and 5-1 as a favorite. Finally, seven of the nine Rays-Yankees meetings in the Bronx have stayed low.

— Justin Upton(notes), Diamondbacks, hit two home runs, including a two-run shot off Jake Peavy(notes), to lead Arizona to a 3-1 win over San Diego.

STREAKING

The Los Angeles Dodgers broke the modern major league record for home winning streak to start a season with their 13th straight victory, 10-3 over the Washington Nationals. The Dodgers surpassed the 12-0 record of the 1911 Detroit Tigers.

SEE YOU IN COURT

The New York Yankees’ former scouting director in this baseball hotbed has filed a $3 million lawsuit against the team for firing him amid a probe of alleged bonus skimming from a top teenage prospect. Ramon Valdivia, one of two scouts fired last year during a Major League Baseball investigation of skimming from contracts with Latin American players, said he is seeking damages against the Yankees to restore his name and hopefully pave the way for his return to baseball.

SAVE THE ‘PEN

Cleveland’s beleaguered bullpen got a boost from its newest member, Aaron Laffey(notes). He had been scheduled to start Thursday night, but the Indians moved him to a relief role and he allowed two hits in three scoreless innings for his first career save in a 9-2 win over Boston. He is 2-0 this year and all 29 of his previous major league appearances were as a starter.

SIZZLING

Albert Pujols is batting .611 (11 for 18) with two homers and three RBIs against the Pirates in five games this season and .371 for his career with 37 homers and 109 RBIs in 490 at-bats.

STUNG

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo(notes) had one of the worst outings of his career. Coming off a stellar performance in his last start, Arroyo gave up nine runs in one inning in a 15-3 loss to Milwaukee. He faced 12 batters overall and retired only two of them. The right-hander gave up seven hits and walked three. The nine runs allowed were one shy of his career high.

GET WELL SOON

Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy is taking an indefinite leave of absence after having setbacks following cancer surgery. The 56-year-old Remy does color commentary for the New England Sports Network. Remy is a former smoker who had surgery for lung cancer late last year and later developed an infection and pneumonia. The former major league second baseman for California and Boston said he disclosed his illness to reinforce the dangers of smoking.

WET ONE

The Orioles beat the Twins 4-1 night in a rain-shortened game marred by four delays totaling 3 hours, 46 minutes. The teams played a total of 1 hour, 27 minutes before the final stoppage occurred with one out in the top of the sixth.

LACKING K’s

Randy Johnson(notes), who stands in second place all-time on the career strikeout list, didn’t have any against Colorado. It was only the fifth time since 1999 that Johnson failed to record a strikeout in a game. The last time was in 2006 when he was pitching for the Yankees.

SPEAKING

“Streaks are fine, but we have more important things in mind. Hopefully, it’s just a stepping stone on the way to something more important. The fact that we’re playing well takes precedence over anything else. The good part about this thing is that this is about winning games, which is what we try to do every day.”—Dodgers manager Joe Torre after his team won its 13th straight home game to start the season, breaking the major league record.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

Rays: Jeff Niemann (2-3, 5.68) hopes to pitch the Rays to their first three-game win streak. The second-year right-hander had his worst start of the season Saturday in a 10-6 loss to Boston, allowing six runs and seven hits in three innings, the shortest start of his career. Niemann had surrendered five earned runs in his previous three starts over 17 innings before getting hit hard by the Red Sox. This will be Niemann's first appearance against the Yankees. Carlos Pena, who hit his major league-leading 12th home run to win the game last night, is 10-for-30 (.333) with three homers lifetime vs. Andy Pettitte.

The Rays are 5-17 in their last 22 games vs. a left-handed starter.

Pettitte held the Rays to three runs through 7 1-3 innings April 15 at Tropicana Field. He is 15-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 25 starts against Tampa Bay.

Texas vs. Oakland

Texas comes off winning 3-2 yesterday as they are now a solid 15-12 for the year; in fact, they lead the AL West with the 15-12 record as our 6 unit future on them (over 72.5 wins) is going well. McCarthy comes off a stellar 3 hit performance against the Wsox at home helping his team win 9-6 and he has done what has been asked of him for a 3rd/4th best starter for this team. He is 3-0 with a 4.67era on the year. Cahill has pitched 4 of 5 quality starts this year as he is 0-2 with a 4.5era. It is misleading however as once again, he has only had 1 bad outing for 7 runs against TB at home. Besides that he has pitched stellar on the year (4 of 5 quality starts). I can see this game going either way as Oakland has the better pitcher on the mound today imo but Texas can easily put up some runs on the board as Oakland is 24th in the league in offense.

Minnesota vs. Baltimore

Minnesota comes off a loss yesterday as the game was halted short. Slowey got hit early and that did it in for him as the Os offense was able to get to him. Perkins has given up 9 runs over the last 11 innings. Bergessen has pitched well in his last start giving up about 3 runs in 6 innings, but the Twins look to bounce-back today and he could be in for a bit of a let down as I'm not sure if I trust him with back to back quality starts. Bergessen has typically not done well against the Os as he is 0-0 with nearly a 12 era in two apperances against them. A small lean on the Os as Perkins has been struggling this year.

Cleveland vs. Boston

Cleveland behind Pavano and being a +153 dog got it done big over the Redsox yesterday. Sowers makes his first start of the year, and I expect him to be a bit rusty but still effective. Wake had his first non-quality start of the year so I do expect him to bounce-back today. Boston also comes off an ugly loss so they look to bounce-back as well. Give Cleveland credit as they are slowly creeping towards being .500 after a rough start to start the year. A small lean on the Under today.

Detroit vs. Chicago Whitesox

Galarraga goes for the Tigers today after picking up his first loss of the year. These two teams were rained out yesterday. He is on a bounce-back so he should pitch well, although, bear in mind he shutout the Wsox in 6 inns in his last start so the Sox are looking for some revenge here. Buehrle has pitched 5 straight quality starts this year as he is 4-0 with a 3.30 era. A small lean on the Under but no thanks, just staying away from this game.

Toronto vs. LAA

Ray pitched decent on May 2nd as he did not pick up a win but helped his team win 5-4 in the ND. Weaver goes for the Angels today and after two consecutive strong starts he had a bit of a weak start against the Yanks on the road in his last go. Toronto absolutely spanked this team 13-1 in the last game so obviously the Angels look to rebound at home today.

Yankees vs. Rays

I expect Niemann to pitch better today as he comes off a rough start and Andy too comes off a relatively unimpressive start compared to his previous quality starts. I look for both pitchers to pitch better today and a lean on the Under, but it is tough to take an Under with both of these teams. Andy is 2-2 with a 4+ era against the Rays so I see this game going either way, but again, a small lean on the Under as the Yanks do come off a loss as well.
