Wednesday's Total Wagering
By Josh Jacobs

Talk about totals wagering in baseball has been buzzing of late. Attention to the science of wind at new Yankee Stadium and conversation about the large dimensions at Citi Field are topics that have taken center stage. In reaction to these developments it’s only right that Wednesday’s preview focuses on this high or low totals.

By the way, Monday opened up the week with the ‘under’ registering a 4-1 record on the ‘under’.

Oakland at N.Y. Yankees – 1:05 p.m. EST

Other then Cleveland, the Yankees have played more day games then any other team in the Majors. This begs the question, is New York’s 9-4 ‘over’ performance in response to games played while the sun is above the horizon? The answer is unequivocally, yes.

It’s obvious that Yankee Stadium has helped push the total ‘over’ its mark three times in four afternoon games played there, but what about the remaining five? Only three day games have dropped ‘under’ the set total as New York has averaged 5.2 runs per game during this time frame. And then there's the Pinstripes’ 6.84 ERA linked to a .285 BAA and a third high, 15 home runs allowed with the sun up.

The evidence so far proves that whether in Yankee Stadium or not, New York and its opponents have sent total players rushing to the window. In just the first four games a total of 20 homers were produced by both the Yanks and Indians.

The planets could be aligned on Wednesday afternoon as Oakland takes a visit to the new ballpark in the Bronx. The Athletics aren’t a stranger to the total phenomenon as their 8-4 tab on the ‘over’ indicates. But what we can’t fall back on is Oakland’s unconvincing 3-2 record on the ‘under’ during five day games played.

Of course with the convincing talk about the ‘over’ comes a 13-3 ‘under’ record in the last 16 head-to-head games played in New York between both clubs. The ‘under’ continues to roll on the board as a 4-0 run has been recorded in the last four meetings.

This mid-week matchup will have the Athletics starting lefty hurler, Brett Anderson (0-2, 4.85 ERA). Anderson has seen the ‘over’ cash in during the two starts he’s been a part of. While giving up two runs in the first game and five during the second, 19 total runs have been accounted for. Combine this with the fact that books have set totals of 8 ½ and eight, in that order, and we get the ‘over’ riding that 2-0 wave.

In nine games that southpaw pitchers have been a part of, the Yanks have accumulated a .320 BA. On top of the scorching batting average, New York has also posted 15 RBIs, a .389 on base percentage and a slugging percentage of .550. However, these numbers take a dive in Yankee Stadium as New York has scored just two runs per game. But in defense, we’re still early on in the season for this sample size to mean much.

The weather report is becoming something more to focus on in the Bronx these days and the latest forecast has cloudy daytime skies with an expected wind of 13 MPH coming out of the southwest. In relation to the new ballpark, a westward wind equates to one blowing out to right field. Stay tuned for daily updates when available. There’s a sense that climatologists, meteorologists and any other –ologists who can comment on the weather effects at Yankee Stadium will be at a premium in the foreseeable future.

L.A. Dodgers at Houston – 8:05 p.m. EST

We’re going from one extreme to the next. While Oakland and New York have been celebrated by gamblers for the ‘over’ success, Houston has been a polar opposite. There’s been no difference between the occurrence of these totals at night (1-7 ‘under’) versus day games (1-3 ‘under’).

There’s no secret to this total trend as the Astros have limped to the plate. We’re talking about a clubhouse who’s driving in only three runs per game (2.9 runs in the last eight) on a slouching, .250 seasonal batting average. This gives the pitching staff some room to make mistakes from the standpoint of hitting the ‘under’.

The rotation and pen has tacked on a lackluster, 4.42 ERA while a 1.47 WHIP is nothing to write home about. And then there’s Houston’s 2-5 record at home even though the pitching staff has responded with an improved 3.66 ERA versus its yearly average (all the much more for the ‘under’ to come calling).

Since we’re not talking about much of an offense let’s jump right to the expected starter. The ‘Stros are expected to send their ace, Roy Oswalt (0-2, 4.26 ERA) to the mound. The right-handed veteran has already been part of two ‘under’ games out of three starts. It was on Apr. 11 that Oswalt surrendered six runs in St. Louis that caused the ‘over’ to top the installed, 7 ½-runs.

Turning back the pages reveals that Oswalt is 5-3 with a 3.63 ERA in eight career starts versus the Dodgers. L.A. has struggled to make contact against the three-time All-Star, slacking in the box with a .257 BA. Twenty runs scored during this matchup trickles down to only 2.5 runs scored per game for the Dodgers. Something else to factor in come Wednesday.

L.A. is at risk to break Houston’s streak despite the above numbers. The Dodgers are 6-2-1 on the ‘over’ in their last nine as scoring 7.6 runs per game is good reason for pushing the total north of the set value.

L.A. is expected to insert lefty, Randy Wolf (1-1, 3.93 ERA) onto the rubber in this contest. Let’s just say that a .226 BA and eight runs produced by the Astros versus southpaws is another reason why the ‘under’ makes a whole lot of sense.

Quick Hitter

-- The White Sox and Orioles will get Game 2 started at 7:05 p.m. EST. Chicago is slated to return John Danks (1-0, 0.75 ERA) to the hill as Baltimore will counter with Jeremy Guthrie (2-0, 4.32 ERA).

-- Chicago is so far, 1-3 in Game 2 of series thus far. In a four-game series versus Tampa Bay, the total went 3-1 on the ‘over’ as the offense was responsible for tacking on seven runs per game. Totals were set by most books at a consistent, 8 ½ to nine runs.

-- The Orioles are a smoking, 7-1 on the ‘over’ in their last eight games. Scoring five runs per game has been only half of the story as the pitching game has done the rest. This is a group of arms responsible for the third worst ERA in the league, currently at 6.69. Mix in opponents hitting for a .324 BA with 24 balls that have found the stands and things become quite clear.

-- In 91 at bats versus southpaw pitchers (Chicago’s Danks is that lefty being referenced), Baltimore is batting .264 for 15 RBIs (14th ranked) and a low 38 total bases. But in-between these numbers is Orioles’ right-handed batters teeing off for a .340 BA with seven RBIs versus these same lefty pitchers.

-- The ‘over’ is 12-4-2 in the last 18 meetings in Baltimore. The ‘over’ is 6-21 in Guthrie’s last 10 home starts versus a team with a winning record.

-- Early lines being posted are Baltimore as a $1.25 home favorite. A total of nine runs has been installed.

Baseball Today

SCOREBOARD

Wednesday, April 22

Kansas City at Cleveland (7:05 p.m. EDT). Indians ace Cliff Lee (1-2) tries for his second straight strong start when the Indians visit the surprising Royals.

STARS

Tuesday

— Edgar Renteria, Giants, hit a grand slam off Jake Peavy and matched his career high with five RBIs, leading San Francisco to an 8-3 victory over San Diego.

— Grady Sizemore, Indians, hit a three-run homer in Cleveland’s 8-7 victory over Kansas City.

— Johnny Damon, Yankees, hit a solo drive for the only home run in the first night game at the new Yankee Stadium, leading New York to a 5-3 win over Oakland.

— Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz, Rangers, each hit a two-run homer in Texas’ 5-4 win over Toronto.

— Torii Hunter, Angels, homered to help Los Angeles edge Detroit 4-3.

— Rick Ankiel, Cardinals, hit a go-ahead RBI double among his three hits, and St. Louis rallied from four runs down for a 6-4 win over the New York Mets.

— Todd Helton, Rockies, broke out of a slump with three hits, including his first homer, and drove in three runs as Colorado rallied for a 9-6 victory over Arizona.

— Jarrod Washburn, Mariners, allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings as Seattle beat Tampa Bay 4-2.

— Aubrey Huff, Orioles, homered twice and drove in four runs in Baltimore’s 10-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

DOUBLE YOUR FUN

The Cleveland Indians turned double plays in six straight innings in an 8-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The six double plays tied a club record for the Indians and set a team mark for the Royals.

OUCH

Pittsburgh catcher Ryan Doumit needs an operation to repair a broken bone in his right wrist and will be out for at least eight to 10 weeks. Doumit, who led NL catchers with a .318 average last season, fractured the wrist bone while batting in Sunday’s 11-1 loss to Atlanta. … Plate umpire Kerwin Danley left the field on a stretcher after being hit in the head by a broken bat in the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s game between Texas and Toronto. Crew chief Dana DeMuth said Danley was taken to the hospital with a possible concussion but did not lose consciousness.

HELPING DUKES

When outfielder Elijah Dukes made a personal appearance at a Virginia Little League’s season-opening gathering for a little extra cash a few hours before a Washington Nationals game, he turned up late at his day job and was fined. Now the Great Falls, Va., Little League—already out the $500 Dukes was promised so he’d show up over the weekend—says it will raise another $500 to cover Dukes’ penalty for failing to arrive at Nationals Park on time.

GOOD COMPANY

Andy Pettitte pitched seven innings to get the win and Mariano Rivera got three outs to earn the save in the New York Yankees’ 5-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics. It was the 57th time Rivera has saved a win for Pettitte, tying Oakland Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley and starter Bob Welch for the highest total in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

SEEING BETTER

Catcher Brian McCann returned to Atlanta’s lineup against Washington after visiting an eye doctor and getting a new contact lens to correct blurred vision in his left eye. After batting fourth for the Braves and going 0-for-2 with two walks in a 4-3 loss, McCann said he probably would sit out Wednesday’s game at Washington. He is mired in a 1-for-22 slump.

HIT MAN

Freddy Sanchez homered and had three hits in the Pirates 3-2 win over Florida and is batting .476 (10-for-21) over his past five games.

BARGAIN

Bernard Madoff’s Mets season tickets, two seats in the Delta Club Gold section behind home plate, sold for $38,100 on eBay, well below the list price for the pair of about $56,000. The sale by lawyer Irving H. Picard, the trustee overseeing the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, covers 75 remaining games this season at Citi Field.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

Ryan Braun had a career-high five hits, including two homers, for the Brewers in an 11-4 loss to the Phillies.

SNAPPED

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ eight-game winning streak ended with an 8-5 loss at the Houston Astros.

LET’S TRY AGAIN TOMORROW

The Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox game was postponed because of rain. It was rescheduled as the first game of a day-night doubleheader Wednesday.

SPEAKING

“It was crushed. Those balls, line drives right at the outfielders, are probably the hardest ones to get a read on. It was unfortunate that he just lost his footing and the ball got behind him.”—Mets reliever J.J. Putz on teammate Daniel Murphy, whose misplay on Brendan Ryan’s fly to left wound up a triple in New York’s 6-4 loss to St. Louis.

Tips and Trends

New York Mets at St. Louis Cardinals

Mets: John Maine hasn't pitched well so far in 2009, and his offense hasn't been giving him much to work with. Maine was tagged for 6 runs and 7 hits with 3 walks over 5 innings Thursday in a 6-5 loss to San Diego. "He was just behind hitters a lot," said catcher Ramon Castro. "When you get behind the hitters, that's what happens." Maine has received just 4 runs of support so far. That's not been the case when he faces St. Louis - in 3 career starts, Maine is 2-1 with a 5.63 ERA and 16 runs of support. The Mets bullpen has pitched very well, with a 1.89 ERA and 1.18 WHIP on the season.

The Over is 6-0-1 in the last 7 meetings.
The Over is 11-3-3 in Maine's last 17 starts overall.

Key Injuries - C Brian Schneider (back) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

Cardinals (-110, O/U 9.5): Joel Pineiro (2-0, 5.40 ERA) pitched solidly at home to beat Houston on April 10, but struggled on the road in a 12-7 win over Arizona last Wednesday. The right-hander yielded 5 runs and 9 hits in 5 innings, and said he had trouble commanding his sinker. "It was a struggle from the first pitch to the last pitch," Pineiro said. "I couldn't put the ball wherever I wanted to most of the time." He limited the Mets to 3 hits in 8 innings en route to a 3-0 road win the first time he faced them in 2007. In two starts last year, he failed to record a decision while giving up 9 runs and 21 hits in 9 total innings.

The Cardinals are 12-2 in their last 14 home games.
The Over is 6-0 in the Cardinals' last 6 overall.

Key Injuries - 3B Troy Glaus (shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

American League Research
By Indiancowboy

Minnesota vs. Boston

Boston romped the Orioles in their last game 12-1. Baker had a horrendous start against the Bluejays at home as he accrued a 13.50 era on April 15th. I think the got the cobwebs out and is in for a better start here today. Wakefield looks for revenge from getting beat up by the Twins last year, call me nuts, but I would not be surprised to see an under 9.5 as I expect a strong performance from Baker as he looks to bounce-back and Wakefield will remember last year's start against this team, I just wish he wasn't coming off a CG for a potential let down here though.

Oakland vs. New York

Anderson had a strong effort against Boston in his last start going 7 inns and giving up just 2 runs on 5 hits. Sabathia gave up just 1 run in nearly 6 innings to the Indians as he did not pick up a decision against his former team, that's back to back quality starts for CC, do note though that he had a 6+ era against the As when he was with the Indians. I actually think Anderson will do a relatively decent job pitching against the Yankees today as he still seeks the first win and CC will try to look sharper in this outing than he did in 122 pitches in just under 6 innings against the Indians. Yankees beat this team 5-3 yesterday.

Chicago vs. Baltimore

Baltimore took it to the Sox yesterday winning 10-3. Of course, Baltimore was coming off a series of tough losses against the Sox. Danks is 2-0 with a 0.75era this year as he has pitched 3 straight quality starts. He went on the road to TB to pitch over 6 innings, give up 2 hits and 1 run as he helped his team pick up the win in Tropicana Field 3-2. Guthrie got rocked in his last start at Boston in 4 innings as he gave up 5 runs on 8 hits. I expect him to bounce-back today. Danks could be "due" for a rough start here, although he is pitching extremely well even dating back to last year, he has typically struggled at Camden though with a 9era. He is 1-2 with a 5.94era against the Os overall. So, I look for Guthrie to do well, and Danks is an unknown, a small lean on the under, but with the way Danks is pitching and the Sox coming off a 3-10 loss, I wouldn't be surprised to see an under with the line at 9.

Kansas City vs. Cleveland

Cleveland got the best of KC by 1 run again with Ponson/Laffey on the mound. The first time the Royals lost 4-5 in KC, this time they lost 7-8 in Cleveland. Bannister makes his first start of the year as the Royals are giving him a chance to re-enter the starting rotation. He has pitched 9 scoreless innings and has good numbers against the Tribe: 3-1, 1.91. With the Indians winning yesterday, the Royals should expect a good performance from Bannister. Lee had a great performance in the new Yankee stadium after having shaky performances against the Jays and Texas. It remains to be seen if he follows it up with another solid performance. He has just not looked that stellar this year but we'll see if returns to his Cy Young form in his 4th starter. To his credit, each of his 3 starts have gotten progressively better. Lee was 5-0 with a 2.63 against the Royals in 5 starts against them last year. The line is at 9.5 and frankly, I can see this game either way, so not bad value here on the Royals if you want to dabble on the ML. Remember, the Royals on a bounce-back and you have a pitcher in Bannister who is trying his pitch himself in the rotation with good lifetime numbers against the Tribe and at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Texas vs. Toronto

How about my Rangers picking up their 6th win on the seas as big +182 dogs at Toronto over Halladay. Tejas is 6-7 and I have a 6 unit Future on them for over 73.5 wins. Remember, this team can go soundly under .500 with the over 160 games and still cash the over on that number. How about that total going over yesterday as well? I'm telling you, Toronto is an over team for the first half of the year likely this year . Harrison has looked shaky this year. He has given up 10 runs in just under 11 innings. Purcey hasn't looked much better giving up 9 runs in slightly over 8 innings. Harrison has yet to start against the Jays. The total resides at 10 and with 2 inconsistent pitchers, the over seems to be a possibility again in a Toronto game. But, I will say this, once a pitcher has back to back nonquality starts, he usually comes back with a relatively decent performance in his next start, after all, if he continues to post up non-quality starts, he gets the hook and a farmhand gets the call. Both pitchers come off back to back nonquality starts. Just staying away from this game.

Minnesota vs. Boston

Second part of your double-header here. Liriano pitched well against Toronto giving up 1 just earned run in 6 innings. But, he did give up 7 hits in 6 innings which is a bit worrisome. Penny has won the last 6 games for the Redsox, do note though, he gave up 8 runs in 3 innings in the 10-8 over the Orioles at home which the Sox were fortunate to win. Penny looks to bounce-back from that game. Twins took a spanking yesterday though and they likely will put up some early runs on Penny, Liriano has not looked sharp either of late, a small lean on the over, but again, I just don't trust either of these teams or pitchers to do anything right now one way or the other. If I had to pick a side, I would actually take the Twins as they come off a loss, Liriano has showed improvement steadily in his starts while Penny has not, but again, no firm lean.

Detroit vs. L.A. Angels

Angels put up a run in the bottom of the 8th to win 4-3 yesterday. I've talked about Vertigo Verlander as I call him and wrote about him in the blog recently. He is due for a bounce-back today after 5 runs in over 7 inns at Seattle. Saunders pitched great in his last outing against Seattle helping his team 5-1 as he is 2-1 with a 2.18era. Saunders is 0-1 with a 6.35era against the Tigers in 2 starts. Verlander pitched much better against the Ms, but just had 1 bad inning. I would not be surprised if this was a pitchers duel again as the total sits at 8.5, as I lean on the Under. But, this could be a game that Saunders has a let down though and the Tigers could get to him given their success against him.

Tampa Bay vs. Seattle

Big Niemann is 0-2 with a 6.35era, as he gave up 9 hits in 6 innings against the Sox in his last start. TB comes off a 4-2 win over Seattle yesterday as they get a bounce-back start from their stud and Washburn pitches relatively well but TB wins. We were on the under in that game which worked out well. Chris J was solid in his first start giving up 2 runs in a little over 5 innings to the Angels as he picked up the loss. So, you have Niemann who still is continuing to give up plenty of hits, the Mariners off a bounce-back, Chris J is pitching relatively well, but the Rays likely will hit him up for several runs in the 4th inning, Niemann has pitched in two unders and Seattle is 7-7 on the under this year, but I lean slightly on the over with no lean on the side.
