Tips and Trends

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants

Reds: The Reds have lost 14 of their last 16 games. They have dropped eight in a row on the road and have yet to win in California, having been swept in three-game series at San Diego and Los Angeles. The Reds are 9-26 in their last 33 away from home. They have dropped 13 of their last 16 against National League West Division clubs. It’s asking a lot of Homer Bailey to right Cincinnati’s sinking ship. Bailey (2-3, 7.06 ERA) has yet to come close to becoming the ace the Reds once envisioned him to be. Cincinnati is 5-17 in Bailey’s 22 starts. The right-hander gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings during his last start, a 6-2 loss to Colorado on Saturday. Bailey gave up one run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings during his previous visit to San Francisco two years ago.

The Reds are 1-10 in Bailey’s last 11 starts versus a team with a winning record.
The Under is 6-1 in Bailey’s last seven road starts.

Key Injuries - Jay Bruce (wrist) and Chris Dickerson (shoulder) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Giants (-$3.00 O/U 7.5 over -$1.25): This is the highest the Giants have been favored all season. Their previous high was when Tim Lincecum (12-3, 2.18 ERA) was -$2.45 at home against the Padres and Joshua Geer on July 9, in a game the Giants won, 9-3. Lincecum is 7-2 with a 1.39 ERA and 96 strikeouts in his last 10 starts, spanning 77 2/3 innings. He has struck out at least eight in each of his past 10 starts. The right-hander shut out the Phillies on Saturday in his last start going eight innings in a 2-0 victory. San Francisco has won eight of its last 10. Freddy Sanchez is 7-for-18 (.389) with four runs scored since coming to the Giants from the Pirates. The Giants are 19-7 in Lincecum’s last 26 starts as a home favorite. The Giants have the best home mark in baseball at 37-16.

The Under is 20-7-2 in the Giants last 29 games as a favorite.
The Under has cashed 7 of the last 10 times when Lincecum has been a home favorite.

Key Injuries - Nate Schieholtz (hip) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Tampa Bay Rays at Seattle Mariners

Rays: Jeff Niemann (10-5, 3.62 ERA) is a solid candidate for American League Rookie of the Year. The Rays right-hander is 8-2 with a 2.70 ERA since May 13. The Rays are 14-3 in Niemann’s last 17 starts. They are 9-2 in his last 11 road starts. Niemann’s road figures, though, are 6-3 with a 4.12 ERA compared to 4-2 with a 2.89 ERA at home. The Rays have lost eight of their last 11 away contests versus teams with a winning home record. However, Tampa Bay is 5-1 in its last six games. The Rays were idle on Thursday. That means they have a rested a bullpen. Their relief pitchers rank fourth in the majors in ERA. Tampa Bay starters have turned in eight quality starts in a row. The under has cashed 10 of the past 11 times the Rays have been ‘dogs.

The Under is 20-6 in the Rays’ past 26 road contests.

Key Injuries - Akinori Iwamura (knee) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mariners (-$1.35, O/U 8 under -$1.20): Seattle is 24-8 (75 percent) the past 32 times it has been chalk. A big reason is Felix Hernandez (12-4, 2.78 ERA). Seattle is 9-1 in his last 10 starts. The Mariners also are 17-8 the past 25 times Hernandez has started the opener of a series. The right-hander, though, has better numbers on the road than at pitcher-friendly Safeco Field. Hernandez is 8-1 on the road with a 1.96 ERA, while 4-3 with a 4.01 ERA at home. This is Hernandez’s first start against Tampa Bay this season. He held the Rays to one run in eight innings during his lone start against them last year. Hernandez has given up a combined nine earned runs, 17 hits, three home runs and five walks with four strikeouts in his last two starts spanning 12 2/3 innings facing Toronto at home and Texas on the road.

The Under is 44-22-2 in Seattle’s last 68 games.

Key Injuries - Endy Chavez (knee) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
