Tips and Trends

Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Dodgers: It would be an understatement to say Brad Penny has pitched poorly in his previous four outings. In Penny's last 23.2 innings of work, he's given up an unfathomable 24 runs. That's not what Joe Torre is looking for from the ace of his staff. In large part due to Penny's struggles, seven of the 10 games he's started have gone over the total. Penny has been average on the road this season, going 2-2 with a 5.09 ERA in four starts away from home. He has been torched by the Mets in his career, going 5-12 with a 6.21 ERA in 20 starts. In his most recent outing against New York earlier this year, Penny was pulled in the fourth inning after he gave up 10 runs on 10 hits.

Key Injuries - NONE

Mets (-115, O/U 8.5): Claudio Vargas has pitched well in three starts for the Mets this year. Despite going 1-2, Vargas has a solid 3.93 ERA. In 18.1 innings pitched, Vargas has only allowed eight runs and has given the Mets a chance to win every time he's taken the mound. Vargas lost his one home start against the Nationals but pitched well, giving up just two runs in 6.1 innings of work. Two of Vargas' three starts in 2008 have gone under the total.

Key Injuries - NONE

Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Rays [7:10 PM ET]

White Sox: John Danks is 3-4 on the season but he could have a much more impressive record with some run support. Danks has a strong 3.00 ERA on the year but in three games where he didn't wind up on the winning side the White Sox only scored three runs. As a matter of fact, in his 10 starts this season, Danks has only given up over two runs twice and shut out opponents on three separate occasions. The UNDER is a goldmine with Danks on the hill, cashing in eight of his 10 starts this season.

Key Injuries - NONE

Rays (-130, O/U 8.5): The Rays have won three of Edwin Jackson's last four starts, although he's factored in only of the decisions. In those four outings, Jackson has only allowed four runs in 25.1 innings of work. Overall this year, Jackson has allowed one run or less a remarkable six times. Even though Jackson has dominated in his last four starts, two of those games went OVER the total thanks to the Rays offense scoring 19 runs.

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks [9:40 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Giants: For the first time this season, Barry Zito is coming off a win. After the Giants lost nine consecutive games Zito started, he finally broke the streak and got a win his last time out over Florida. Zito pitched well in that game, giving up only three hits and one run in 6.1 innings on the mound. That's really been the only bright spot for Zito in 2008. He's been awful on the road, going 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA. Amazingly, six of the games Zito has started this year have come in UNDER the total.

Key Injuries - NONE

Diamondbacks (-200, O/U 9): Randy Johnson had won three games in a row before dropping a tough decision to the Braves his last time out, despite giving up just one run in six innings pitched. As usual, the Big Unit has been strikeout machine, fanning 47 batters over 44.2 innings. Johnson is 3-1 at home but he's benefited from strong run support to offset his 5.86 ERA at Bank One Ballpark. Five of Johnson's eight starts have gone OVER the total but his last two easily went under with a combined 10 runs scored.
