Tips and Trends

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

Rays: Andy Sonnanstine was in danger of losing his spot in Tampa Bay’s starting pitching rotation and possibly being sent to the minors, but he responded well in his last start. He held Kansas City to two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings in a victory on Tuesday. Sonnanstine didn’t walk a batter, while inducing 11 groundball outs. Keeping the ball on the ground is a key at the new Yankee Stadium where the Yankees have homered in 16 consecutive games. The last time the Yankees failed to go deep at home was against Sonnanstine on May 6 during a 4-3 loss in 10 innings. It’s the only time the Yankees have not homered at home this season. Sonnanstine is 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in six career starts versus New York. Evan Longoria pinch-hit on Sunday. He had been out since leaving Tuesday’s game with a sore hamstring.

The Rays are 8-3 the past 11 times they’ve been an underdog.
The Over has cashed in 8 of Tampa Bay’s past 10 road games.

Key Injuries - Evan Longoria is day-to-day with a hamstring.
Jason Bartlett (ankle) is on the DL.
Akinori Iwamura (knee) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Yankees (-$1.55, O/U 11): The Yankees are convincing people they could be the best team in baseball winning 17 of their last 23 games. New York is 20-8 since Alex Rodriguez returned on May 8. The Yankees are 75-34 (68 percent) in Andy Pettitte’s last 109 home starts. New York is 15-6 in Pettitte’s past 21 starts versus Tampa Bay. The 15-year veteran, though, hasn’t been sharp in his last five home starts with a 6.53 ERA. The lefty has allowed at least four runs in each of those games. Pettitte has a 5.79 ERA in six home starts on the season. He is 15-4 with a 3.85 ERA in 26 career starts against the Rays, but is 2-3 with a 4.95 ERA during the last seven times he’s faced Tampa Bay. This season, Pettitte has two non-decisions against Tampa Bay. The Rays have gotten to Pettitte for eight runs in 13 1/3 innings.

The Under is 19-9-1 in Pettitte’s last 29 home starts.
The Over has cashed 9 of the past 12 times these two teams have met.

Key Injuries - Relief pitchers Brian Bruney (elbow) and Damaso Marte (shoulder) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

San Francisco Giants at Florida Marlins

Giants: Randy Johnson nailed down his 300th victory in his last start. Now he’s going for No. 301 on just three days rest after throwing 78 pitches in six innings during his historic 5-1 victory at Washington on Thursday. Johnson bruised his non-throwing shoulder in the win, but says he is fine to go. Both Johnson and the Giants are hot. Johnson is 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 14 strikeouts during his past three starts. San Francisco is 9-3 in its last 12 games, including 4-1 in its past five contests. Johnson has a strong history against the Marlins with an 8-1 mark and 1.78 ERA in 13 starts. The Giants are 8-3 in their last 11 road games against Florida. Outfielder Aaron Rowand has a 17-game hitting streak, longest active streak in the majors. Rowand is batting .411 during this period. He is a career .363 hitter versus Florida.

The Under is 8-1-1 in the Giants’ last 10 games as a road underdog.
The Under is 15-3-2 in San Francisco’s past 20 road games against a left-handed starter.

Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Marlins (-$1.25, O/U 8.5): The Marlins have shown resiliency going 6-0 in their last six games following a loss. They’ll try to bounce back from Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Tim Lincecum with rookie southpaw Sean West. This will be his fourth big-league start. West is striving to improve his command and pitch more consistently. But he’s considered a big-time talent. The oddsmakers think enough of him to make him a favorite. Florida has won five of the past six times it has been chalk. West has a 3.31 ERA and 1.22 ratio through three outings, but is looking to get his first win. The Brewers roughed him up in his last start on Wednesday. West couldn’t get out of the fifth inning, surrendering four runs in a 9-6 loss. He struck out two and walked three. The Marlins may be without team RBI leader, first baseman Jorge Cantu. He’s been bothered recently by dizziness.

The Under is 7-0-1 during the past eight games Fieldin Culbreth has been the home plate umpire.

Key Injuries - Jorge Cantu is day-to-day with dizziness.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)
